I have a Troy Bilt 3 stage, 24 inch, but mine has a 377 cc engine(?).
Purchased from Canadian Tire, about 8 years ago.
I really wish I'd found this video before undertaking simultaneous replacing of both belts.
To avoid any possible damage to the belts, I removed, (albeit successfully, reinstalled it), the drive plate mechanism.
I can't recall which of the new propell belt or the auger drive belt.
Which I was concerned about possibly damaging were I to have forced into place, better to error o the side of caution.
In hindsight, and again, a very
    encouraging video for us DIYer's!

Hi Donyboy73, As a customer/user, I found that if the snow blower is left outside after snow blowing, I will keep the blower engine on and auger still engaged to get any remaining snow out of the high speed end of the auger before shutting down. Because if I don't, it will freeze and seize up and it will not spin when engaged the next time that I use it ( the belt will fail if I keep it engaged, like your customer's ).
But if this does happen, I use an old broom handle and shove it into the chute, tap the high speed auger blade (with the blower shut off of course) and free up the high speed auger before use. This works for me all of the time, saving my auger drive belt.

Thank you so much. My husband was supposed to replace the belt on ours but has just been too busy and we got a bunch of snow so I took the project on myself and with the help of your video and one other gentlemen's on UA-cam I was able to do it myself! I will say my belt did not come off near as easy as yours but I don't have the best hands either but I got creative and got it off. Thank you again so much saved me a nice chunk of money from having to pay to have it picked up repaired and delivered back home

Great video! Went to pull my snowblower out today and it started fine and drove fine, but augurs would not work. Suspect I have a bad or broken belt. I"ll be checking shortly. Unit has sat for over a year and is about 10-12 yrs. old. UPDATE: Opened up my MTD Snowblower today and the old belt was very loose and the cause of the auger not working. Replaced it and all's well. I also adjusted the Auger control cable (cable that runs from the handle to tensioner pulley). The hardest part of installing the cable was getting it over the Drive Wheel nut. Took some extra work to get it over the drive wheel which didn't seem to move as much as the one in this UA-cam video.

WOW - thanks for this video. I bought this exact snowblower used. I have been knocking my head as to why the new auger belt is flapping/vibrating very bad when dis-engaged - idling... In your video I see that there is a belt guard (7:30 of video) - which seems to be missing on my machine. Pretty sure that is my issue.....Thanks!!!

Been sub'd to your channel for a while now big D! Always good direction & info. With your vids, last season, I was able to change my carb on my 20yo Huskee 8hp/26" blower. Inside of carb was spotless, all jets were clean. I've used Seafoam continually for all those years, & avoided Ethanol. But...still had surging the last couple years!!! WTH!? Got a tip from a mechanic friend to check the top of carb-body where throttle-plate shaft comes through. Sprayed wd-40 on that point when running, & sure enough, bubbled like crazy! The BODY of the carb itself was getting worn into, not just the throttle-shaft. No fix for THAT, so that's why new carb had to go on! The cause??? 20yrs of vibration takes it's toll, even if perfect gas-practices are used!
    Thanks again D!!!!

Excellent video. If I had seen this earlier I could have done it myself instead of having a local dealer pick it up, change the belt and oil and grease the gears all for the price of the belt instead of whatever the bill will be when it comes in the mail. This is my first snowblower since I moved to Brockville Ontario so I was a little intimidated by the unknown. Mind you I became fairly handy with my Simplicity Conquest garden tractor after the first few years.

I appreciated this video, it made the repair easier. However, a couple of comments. 1) It's not always true that the smaller engine machines take the 954-04050 belt. Mine has a smaller engine than the one shown, but still took the 954-04195 belt. The old belt has the part number printed on it, if it's not too damaged to read. 2) To get the belt past the bolt heads on the pulley and drive disc, it helps to twist it sideways rather than trying to just push it straight past. 3) You can get a belt at an auto parts store and save money. I got a Gates AX35 V-belt at O'Reilly Auto Parts for $13.95, which appears to be the same belt as OEM, right down to the patent numbers printed on it. Saved $7.

Great video! Glad i subscribed long time ago because i might need to change the belt. Do you know why my center auger rotates when the lever is not engaged? I remember checking in the past to see if the shear pins snapped off, and the augers would have a little play but would not fully rotate. Yesterday i checked for a broken shear oin and noticed the central auger (it's a 3 stage blower) rotates if i turn it. I believe it's the belt... Or gear box. Any thoughts?

    @SvenTSchixe 5 років тому

    Hey Dony,
Great video, I really appreciate it.
Do you have any videos on how to remove the front propeller piece of these 3 stages?
I broke a shear pin on the front propeller, had a hell of a time getting it out but eventually, gently got it out with banging things up, however I noticed that there is no play in the front propeller like the other augers and there is no remaining shear pin that can be holding it in place, this is why I ask if you have or could do a video on removing the front propeller on a 3 stage Troy-Bilt.
Thanks in advance and cheers from Niagara Falls, Aaron :)

Wow, that center auger/impeller of that 3 stage system really looks like it spins fast, at least on video. Is it spinning at the full (1200rpm-ish) rate that the typical last-stage impeller would be? Or do they have it geared down to something between that and the 120-ish I'm used to for the first stage auger?

Bought a 3-stage blower for this winter and it crapped out when I used it for the first time. Admittedly I hit a good size branch that was hidden under the snow (but I've chewed through much bigger stuff without any issue using my other 10 year old snow blower). The engine almost stalls and the augers don't move at all when I try to engage the auger, and I can also smell burning rubber. I'm really hoping it's just a belt issue and not some mechanical issue. Guess I'll find out when I dig into it tomorrow.
My old thrower is a Troy Bilt Storm XP 30" and the new one is a Vortex 28". They're nearly identical in every way except the new one is 2 inches smaller in width and is a 3-stage instead of a 2-stage. It's crazy how inferior the new one is, the controls feel cheaper and clunkier and the 3-stage doesn't throw the snow nearly as well. Would have bought another of the same model but of course they stopped making them and after 10 years the build quality has apparently dropped so much it would probably be just as crappy. Not impressed at all.
Anyway, now that I've vented a bit, thanks for posting the video! I've already done this on my old unit but needed a refresher.

make sure the impeller is not frozen, doublecheck nothing behind impeller is jamming it up. sounds like u need a new belt. I have noticed how the 3 stage works good to blow snow bank from plow though

@@donyboy73 Three years later and I finally got around to looking at it. There was a piece of wood stuck way in the back that I removed. Now it just vibrates really bad when the augers are engaged. I split the machine in half so I can work with the whole auger system, but I can't really tell what is bent. The axle going across the front for the impellers seems straight but the gearbox and accelerators really vibrate. I'm guessing the input shaft is bent. Would have been nice if the sheer pins actually did their job. Instead they only partially sheered and let something get bent instead.

Donyboy73 , That Bolt you removed , on the left what is that for ??/ I dont see it holding anything or is it for the belt to not come off ?

Good vid. With an MTD there is no need to split the machine to change a belt as you would have to do on an Ariens or some other brands. MTD's are relatively easy to maintain, cheaper to buy and will last with proper maintenance. I have read that breaking shear pins are now an issue with them. I had an MTD model 640F from 1995 that served me well for nearly 20 years, granted I don't live in a snow belt, but they are pretty good machines for the money but often get little respect.

I find the front auger on the 3 stage breaks more pins

I did belt work on one of these this past year. It had never been serviced before. I couldn't believe how dry everything was. I don't think they bother with any lube from the factory on these.
