Great video. As someone who is an iPad only (for the most part) user, it’s refreshing to see a tech UA-camr who isn’t constantly dogging on the iPad for clicks. I’m someone who with my illustration/design work, I find myself only needing a Mac to do something once every few months. Granted, my 2013 MacBook Pro can’t really handle the sparse amount of tasks that I need a Mac for anymore, so I’d eventually will need a Mac for those tasks soon. Part of my is thinking a Mac Mini, but I love the mobility of an iPad so I’ll eventually have to invest in a MacBook Air
You could buy the Mac mini and use the iPad as a monitor that way you have both. The new Mac mini is gonna be even smaller.. i Think for people that Want an iPad and a Mac thats the best combo for now.
While I don’t think the IPad needs Mac OS, there is still major problems with IPad OS (mainly with the App Store and Apples unwillingness to allow different web engines). iPadOS needs to be rebuilt from the ground up to be its own system (NOT based on IOS). The whole point of the iPad is to be versatile and it’s not at this point
Agreed. There's a reason why the Surface Pro is still considered a poor tablet experience these days despite providing a decent laptop experience. You could realistically only excel in one or the other. Heck even Google still couldn't figure out given that Android and ChromeOS are treated distinctly from each other. Simply shoehorning a desktop OS into a touch UI (and vice versa) is a sure fire way to ruin a product experience.
You don’t get why the debate is going on? You can’t imagine that some people can afford just one device? You can’t imagine that carrying MacBook and iPad is not practical? You don’t see how powerful the device is and yet you can’t really use its power? In that case, you’re just a delusional Apple ultra fan, bro…
Obviously because if it's powerful enough to run full apps designed for desktop, it should be allowed to do that. That's the entire point of the progress. It's a no brainer to implement some sort of cross over. Especially when is so expensive.
I don't want macOS to come to iPad. But I want iPadOS to be able to do all the basic things macOS can do, and take advantage of the touch-form-factor to even do some OS things better than macOS.
100% agree! Compared to usability on the ipad, laptop/MacOS just seems unnecessarily cumbersome. iPad cuts all the fat, it’s truly amazing! And personally, i truly believe MacBooks/laptops are a sinking ship and the ipad is on the rise. Once people wake up to whats possible on the ipad, it’ll be desktop and ipad left standing. I give it 7-10 years
I agree, but I think if Stage Manager was more like Mac OS and would turn on when connected to a display and keyboard/mouse. It's really Stage Manager that sucks. Samsung's DEX is a great example of how it should work.
It's stuck in a macOS-worldview without letting itself be macOS. It needs to get out of "macOS-thinking." What I mean is how it's thinking of windows, docks, stages, and all of this the same as if it's macOS when it's not. What are the main advantages of tablet? Touch and gestures. You need to be doing gestures and taps like a furious deaf person doing sign language to be instantly making all kinds of things happen, switching, selecting, closing, splitting, and so on. Right now, it's like squinting your eyes to touch some tiny "..." to get into split screen, carefully finding some other thing to split with it, and so on. Ought to be like a whirlwind of touchy magic just like watching a fast typist on a keyboard, but watching a fast gesture maniac play it like a piano.
Faiz - Great Video. I tried the 13” M4 and thought it was too big and honestly went back to the 11” Pro. But YOU Are right! The IPAD fits right between. For portability it works get and gives me “some” functionality that I would need on the road - and if I need more …. I use my MacBook Air, it is as simple as that. A few minor tweaks (maybe IPAD OS 19 ? 😅 and it should be close to perfect….
These are my exact thoughts too. I wanted something versatile that wouldn’t be a hassle to carry around like my MacBook and the cellular sealed the deal for me. Ever since I got this new thin iPad Pro I’ve used it infinitely more than I ever did with my MacBook Pro. I only heard about this push for MacOS on iPad since I got it and started getting recommended.
I couldn’t agree more. Thanks Faiz. It shows that you also did your research about this love your boldness to speak this out for iPad users. I myself use an iPad 10th gen as my main computer. Love the versatility of an iPad
I think you made some pretty solid points. I think, as a long time iPad Pro user, that with the extremely high costs, and the obvious capabilities, there should at the very least be the ability to run full programs like on Mac OS. The very fact that developers need to make an entirely different app is the actual problem. There should be soem version of a “Rosetta” type of program that can port in dmg programs to run on iPad. I think that’s the only real valid complaint. But I don’t know enough about programming to understand why something like that isn’t possible or hasn’t been done.
I think you are right in the way that iPad should do things in a “iPad way” but I also think that if iPad should be more powerful (and I think that we all agree with this) it should take more and more things from macOS (so it should become much closer to Mac): see StageManager for example, or keyboard and mouse support, resolution rescaling when connected to external monitor and so on.
Faiz, I have just subscribed to your channel. You make excellent points. The iPad is a tablet first. Period. Bringing MacOS to it will defeat the purpose of a Tablet. I just recently purchased an M3 Pro MacBook Pro and only use it in the office connected to a Docking station. When I’m home, I have no need for the Mac as the iPad with iPadOS is perfectly adequate to deal with email, web browsing, Movie watching, Music Listening, and I don’t have to deal with a full fledged desktop OS. I like it and there are a bunch of other UA-cam Channels attesting to the same. In fact, if Apple were to add a “Clamshell” mode to iPadOS, I would GLADLY move to iPadOS completely.
To answer you’re question why plug-in aren’t allowed on the iPad is because of sandboxing restrictions. On macOS we can make a framework a place it in a certain folder where other developers can access. This helps make plug-in capable on macOS and not iPadOS. That is the sort answer to that question but the limitations of iPadOS. Nice video through.
I agree with you, the iPad don‘t need MacOS. But there are times, i wish iPad os is a bit more like macOS. I use my ipad for personal use. I still have my old MacBook Air 2013 for the task, that my ipad can’t do. Like formation my digicams sd card. Or configure my router. Or installing the firemware update to my printer, so i could configure it with my ipad. I already was on an nearly ipad Only workflow, after my old MacBook no longer received updates. I couldn’t justify buying a new Mac for the few times i use it. Could i buy a new Router instead using the provider provided one? Yes, but why. Should company’s make there Produkts compatible? Also yes. But Apple could also just allow other browser engines, not just WebKit. Same as the SD Card formatting. Also, why can we use external drives (usb, ssd, datacards) but have no option to safely remove/unmount them? That’s apple. Another Point i wish apple would change is the hardware selection. You can use other webcams or an external Microfone. But you can‘t really select which one you use. For mics, it’s always the last conneted audio device. For Webcams in my opinion it is luck. So why don’t they allow a selection? Because if it would be possible, there would be app that offers these features, and theses would be selling points for this app. Another example, i have an external mic with a trrs plug that came with my digicam. If I use it in combination with an original Aoole dongle, The mic allways recogniced as a headset, so I can’t hear should from the ipad speakers, because ipad os sends the sound to the „headset“. There is no option to change this. While i use my ipad mostly as an handheld device, i do have a bluetooth keyboard and mouse for the few administrative task that requires more text typing. Yes the mouse works, but why could we have a mouse arrow? In my personal opinion, it would make things in desktop mode so much easier. It could be a switch option. Dot or arrow.
You are so right they should not bring macOS to iPad because you’re gonna throw away the desktop or the laptop and then the only thing you’re gonna be using your iPad. It doesn’t make sense and desktop laptop operating system like you said so why would they bring that to an iPad, you’re gonna throw away the laptop and now you’re gonna have your iPad to be able to do everything it doesn’t make sense ❤😊
it is basically the same you are asking for.. you are asking the capability of a laptop of a pc for a tablet.. they are two different gadgets to do their different task.. a tablet is a tablet & that's it.. a laptop is a different gadget..
I love ipados for some issues and macos for others. However, I think there should be a hybrid option as there are still not things that iPad can do. I would LOVE to be able to bring JUST an iPad on trips than cart along my MacBook too. I don't want iPad to be replaced with macos. But just like mac used to allow multiple operating systems in BootCamp I would love to see this happen to the mac. It would make it so much easier to cart around one device rather than 2 when traveling. if this happened I would max out the storage and apple still makes a TON of money on my upgrades instead of buying a second machine.
I just want iOS to be better and for apple to release their iron grip on the appstore. We can’t get apps like godot or blender because of the App Store policy. Even though the iPad Pro is more than capable of running them
nice video, but IMO, Apple doesn't make a touch screen Mac because they would destroy iPad sales. They don't add the MacOS to iPad because no one would buy Macs. As you pointed out, we saw this happen with Windows - tablets failed miserably. But 2-in-1's were born. Apple could come out with a 2-in-1 device, but their products would be consolidated into a single device.
This is untrue, iPads that could run Mac OS overall more expensive than a MacBook Air as they require a keyboard and the MacBooks have them built in. That and the iPad only has one USBC port making it necessary to buy a dongle or something. Basically to get the same experience as you would get on a Mac. It’d be significantly more expensive, which is why the MacBook Air could still be successful alongside it. It’s like the surface pro vs the surface laptop
I agree. People don't want MacOS on iPad, people want MacOS APPS on the iPad. The full power professional software like Photoshop, not the scuffed versions we have now.
The point of haters is the ability of iPad OS to have option to switch to Mac OS if it's connected to a mouse. Imagine your problem before...what if you're far from home without your macbook. If your iPad can switch to MacOS where most apps have all the features, you can solve you problem. You can then switch back to iPad OS for fun and ease of use for most activities

Not agreeing one bit. According to your logic, having a pro iPad has no place in the Apple lineup since everything SJ envisioned a decade ago can be done perfectly on the entree level iPad. Also blaming app developers for not bringing all the features from the macOS while dealing with the limitations of iPadOS is shortsighted at best.
