Truly. The other ones just feel lazy. Borderline hot takes. Smart sounding Hot Takes based of research using only first party sources (i.e. from the company....) isn't "news" nor unique.
Ive seen a dozen reviews like "can I live a week using only the iPad." They all say no it didn't work and I switched back to a Mac but they never give good reasons why. They complain about the files app but never tell why it sucks. Not one that I have seen has been this in depth about the real issues. I was planning on getting rid of my M1 MacBook Air and my 2018 iPad Pro for one of these. But after this review I don't think I will. Great review.
Apple used to be the king of UI/UX. But over the last 5 or so years they’ve been missing the mark… a LOT. They seem to be taking 5 steps forward, then another 4.9 steps back. Craig Federighi needs to clamp down on the quality of life aspects of the OSes he’s responsible for. I like Craig, but I truly miss Bertrand Serlet who truly understands human/machine interactions through software.
We need people working at apple to try their entire workflow using the iPad. They don't even have to be software engineers or anything. Even people working in accounting will have headaches. Then we'll see.
Truly. iPad and Apple watch have seen this on spades. You can tell they’re having trouble when they attempt to reinvent the paradigm, only for it to not be better, and not be worse. That’s evidence of not having a real vision for the UI. Apple watch is the best interface for smart watches, but genuinely I find it strange, and convoluted at times. With both the iPad and Watch, as long as you’re doing something simple it’s magical. But you try to do much more and the warts start showing.
@@shableepGod yes, I mean 3D Touch was a fantastic idea, I loved it on my iPhone but on the Apple Watch it made perfect sense and worked really well, but they dumped it no doubt due to cost and increase profits under Cook, now a lot of what they do seems to follow that ideology. iPad Pro is an incredible device, but it’s designed to never overtake a Mac as Apple wants you to own both, and thus it’s been designed as such. Apple is the only reason the iPad Pro isn’t a much more capable machine, hardware doesn’t need anything changed it’s entirely software driven.
MacOS new system settings is a mess. i can't imagine how they found it a good idea to implement. and on IPadOS the file manager is terrible. Norton commander released 38 years ago was even better.
I’m not sure there is a UI that could solve all of these problems, it’s difficult. Maybe something force tough based…but needs a complete overhaul similar to how iOS 7 rebuilt the full OS for iPhones.
The FCP export issue blows my mind, so frustrating. Better yet, if you get all the way through a long export, and your iPad goes to sleep with the selection dialog open, you've lost your export.
It's been a long-standing issue since iOS got an App Store. "Minimize kills the active app" is a non-negotiable part of the platform and Apple is evidently unwilling to add API surface for long-running background tasks *even if it means making their own apps significantly harder to use*. Yes, I know you can ask the OS for background processing time. It's not guaranteed your app will get it and you only get a few minutes max. It's good enough for making sure a social media post finishes uploading and that's it. What pro apps need is a complete exemption from normal iOS power and memory management policy, so they can keep parts of themselves running *until the battery dies*. What really kills me though is that Apple couldn't even implement suspend and resume functionality within FCP to work around their own stubbornness. Serializing UI state to disk is table stakes for any mobile app. It makes all the iPad ports of their apps feel like two people worked on them, max.
I've given the iPad lots of tries over the years. Doing mundane stuff with it feels like a breeze so I often thought to myself "okay, you beautiful device, let's get to work!" only to find myself frustrated shortly after.
yeah, that was my problem too. Now I'm returning to Surface Pro instead (now with ARM). My old Surface Pro was more useful, but the battery wasn't that great. So switched to iPad pro and ended up disappointed.
@GarrusVakarian-to2uhif you're a power user a MacOS device isn't as limited as perhaps you think. I'm a developer/power user, MacOS has plenty of power. You may need to go to Terminal to use it, but it exists.
I was an early adopter. I had the OG iPad, then owned an iPad 3 after that. They were great content consumption devices. But yeah, anytime you'd buckle down to do any serious business, it was frustrating. A lot has changed to iPadOS since, but also a lot hasn't. To me they're still content consumption devices with some pro features bootstrapped on almost as an afterthought. I switched to a Surface Pro 5 in 2017 (which I'm using right now). I have a love-hate relationship with it. They have the opposite problem of what the iPad has, in that the touch interface sucks. But they also lack a lot of the limitations.
It's always been just another tablet. I just gave mine away a few years ago. Constantly struggling with the OS to do anything other than watch a video or send a message made me tired.
Agree. Most Apple videos I have watched are just glazing on their products and tells you to buy their latest and greatest. Maybe they are afraid of getting dislikes but I have stopped watching them for obvious reasons.
by far and not even close. I was expecting marques to go through some of this in his review but nope. dont get me started with 99% of the rest with their same "oh look at this spec" "oh look at this cool hardware" "oh look at this oled" ffs
So glad to see someone else complain about how non-simple iPadOS is. I got rid of my 2015 MBP for a 2020 iPad Pro to be one of those guys that can accomplish everything on an iPad. Boy was I wrong. I dealt with it for about 6 months before building a PC so that I could get more productive things done. Then a couple years after that purchased a 14” MBP and have since relegated my iPad to just a media machine. I can grab my MacBook and get anything done in a fraction of the time with infinitely less frustration compared to iPadOS.
The M4 iPad Pro can be used as a laptop for some people…but an M1 iPad Pro can also do the same thing. The OLED display is nice but not a dealbreaker not to have. iPadOS needs to be improved to justify an iPad Pro’s price tag
You’re 100% right. I currently own the M1 and M4 iPad Pro both at 1TB, and the larger screens of both. The M1 still feels like a better product, im not big on the thin “pro” device. I would’ve gotten the Air if I wanted the thin and light version. Honestly, the M4 might be going back. I just cant justify it, the M1 feels just as snappy and it has an extra camera. I do love the center camera on the new M4, but otherwise I really don’t notice a difference.
You can use it as a laptop if you use Microsoft’s Remote Desktop app to access a Windows machine from it. That actually works pretty well, and graphics has better performance than on a Windows laptop.
I am a professional, full time artist. I am pretty much the exact target audience for an iPad. I've held off for years. and year-over-year Apple has given me more reasons NOT to get one. Here's just a few. Do you really think I'm going to pay ANY amount of money to use the Files app? I am not. You couldn't pay ME to use the Files app. I can barely stand using it on my iPhone. I can't even open webm/mkv or 50 other formats. It's literally trash. With all the file formats I open daily, there's no way I can use the Files app with any regularity. The Pros start at $999 now. Why? Why would I buy an iPad Pro at $999 STARTING price when i can get an M1 Macbook with 16GB RAM/512GB of storage on ebay for +/- $749? I can install the full, ACTUAL adobe suite on that. I'm not limited in file type and I can run 100x the software on it. I don't have to buy a $349 keyboard for it - amazingly, the price of a macbook includes the keyboard and mouse. Why is the keyboard for these iPads $349? I can buy an entire laptop for $349. Do they do something special I'm missing? why is the new Pro more poorly weighted on the keyboard than a macbook from 2010? I could go on and on. $999 base price for one of these is a very, very incredibly fast slab of underwhelming software and missed opportunity. The base model iPad. Why? It still starts at 64GB. But that's not even the worst part. I have to use that godawful $10 dongle to charge the 1st gen Apple Pencil because, while Apple is able to stack two OLEDs on top of each other for the new Pro, making an iPad that can wirelessly charge a pencil was just too hard. I don't care who the target demographic is for this iPad, no one should have to charge an accessory in such a stupid, asinine way. The iPad Air. This is the most compelling iPad to me (ignoring the fact that, despite being refreshed at the same time as the iPad Pro, the Pro is THINNER and LIGHTER than a product called, the iPad AIR) It just got a storage bump up to 128GB of storage (still not great for something that starts at $599) and can't go past 256GB. Still the best iPad IMO, but I'd rather pick up a 5th gen on clearance for $549 for the 256GB version (a price i've seen regularly and running for multiple days, from multiple retailers) The iPad Mini. Cool iPhone Pro Max++, I guess? Someone out there has found a use case for theirs, I can't fathom one. Glad they figured out how to charge a pencil off it without a dongle, though. I hope they figure it out, but i'm not holding my breath. Maybe, MAYBE when the M1 trickles down to the base iPad and they figure out the magic of sticking a pencil to the side of it, I'll get one for +/- $349. But right now, it's all somehow too bloated and too stripped down, too overcomplicated and too simplified, all at the same time. I like Apple products, a lot, I love my iPhone. But this current iPad lineup isn't it.
@@imaginationcreation8005first off all, dont speak for all artist. 3D is simply garbage for example, if you just do Illustration its a nice addition to your daily work but as a main device simply because of the terrible files app its a bad device.
@@imaginationcreation8005 artist as "use procreate" to do fun stuff or you use blender/Maya/3ds max or Toon Boom Harmony/Animate or Illustrator? Like any industry standard program. Most really pro software does not exist on iPad or their versions are limited in many ways (PS, AI etc.). Procreate is great, but lack of desktop app makes it almost unusable in a professional environment.
The dongle issues were fixed because they released a pencil with the same port as the iPad it’s sold with, and I cannot believe I just wrote that about Apple in 2024.
One small correction at 11:15 and it’s that you have to really fling your cursor mouse down to get the dock to show up when hidden. The problem is that the flinging down is borderline impossible when the iPad monitor is set to below the external monitor…very poor UX
I wish there were more people that were critical of the iPad like you are. At that price point with that kind of tech inside it should be capable of so much more than it is. It should be a legit editing, powerhouse of a tablet.
True but to play devils advocate, they can change that with future software updates . But they won’t let you run Mac apps on an iPad as it would cannibalise MacBook sales
hehe I've seen this video have three different titles as Snazzy was changing his mind, approximately these - I can't review the new iPad Pro - iPad Pro (2024) is great. iPadOS is terrible. - The M4 iPad Pro let me down
Honestly, I gave up on iPad Pro for pro work. Quinn said it best; iPadOS is actually convoluted. MacBook Pro offers so much comfort. That's why I love iOS and macOS they're really breezy to use. I no longer see my Mac when I do things, it just disappears.
Having had to do something trivial as copy some video files over to my friend's iphone 15 from my linux system, I can't believe how cursed the whole file system is in ios. The man's regretting it now lol, I can't believe anyone would prefer to work in an environment where you have to individually share each file to each of your apps, and live without being able to sanely structure and classify your files. For the sake of simplicity is apple completely throwing away good software user practices? Like taking some responsibility for how you manage your files?
M1 iPad Air is on sale at Walmart for $400. If I was buying an iPad right now, that's the one I'd get. The new models have only functioned to make the old stuff an easier pill to swallow.
@@DonaldPiperEar I don't think the camera angle is worth $150 (+ a little more storage and performance). It will still do all the same stuff you'd likely ever want to do.
Quoting the Bourne Supremacy: like Jason, Apple doesn’t “do random.” iPadOS is limited specifically so you’ll continue to buy a separate laptop. If every frustrating limitation in iPadOS were fixed, Apple’s laptop sales would suffer. They can’t afford that outcome, thus iPad will be just useful enough but never a replacement for the laptop experience, no matter how much we complain.
Agreed 100%. Also, you‘re one of the few UA-camrs who acknowledge that „pro work“ isn‘t only about video editing and music making (on one of three apps available for these tasks).
just returned mine today. The screen is absolutely beautiful and i loved watching content on it while traveling, but that's been literally it's only use case other than acting as a mobile second monitor for my Macbook (albeit limited to 60hz over screen sharing which kinda removes a lot of the appeal). I purposely tried to do everything I normally do on it, and there were multiple instances where i just had to pull out my Macbook. Again, incredible display and if they eventually stop gimping iPadOS I may get another one, but as of now an $1,800 travel content consumption machine just isn't worth it. If they put the same OLED panel in the upcoming Macbook Pro, that will be the ultimate device
I’ve used an IPad Pro for 2+ years for my daily work. Overall it’s great and the new hardware is a noticeable improvement. What’s holding the iPad back is Safari and developers not testing their websites against it. Especially web apps for business. I routinely need to Remote Desktop to a “real laptop” to get some work done.
11:45 3D-Touch made the devices thicker and more expensive to produce. Problem with 3D-Touch was that there was no good support in (visual feedback from) de UI, so users had to guess were its functionality was hidden.
Appreciate the video. Think there’s a couple of things you missed with Stage Manager. You can see all of your stages by going into the app launcher (still can’t manage a stage here, but can at lease see them all). Also, you can add an app to your current stage (from the dock) by shift+clicking. Needs more work, but couple of things that others could find helpful.
9:19 - You can drag an open window to any “stage” without having to click the three dots and selecting a new app window manually. You can also set up shortcuts to turn on stage manager and open the 4 apps you need to start your workflow.
Man, this is the single best video on the new iPad. You highlighted everything wrong with the iPad while proving that you understand both its purpose and its potential, while avoiding parroting the same talking points that I've been hearing over and over in every video since the iPad's release. Kudos. You, and whoever else worked on this video (I'm not familiar with your team here) did a stellar job. You seemed interested in the viewers' take on the iPad, so here's mine: For me, even after seeing all the reviews, both negative and positive, I will be purchasing the new iPad Pro. That is because I understand the device for what it is (I don't drink the Apple kool-aid. I've been an Apple hater for years, this device is an exception in my eyes), and I do not need to replace a laptop or other device. I just want a good, comfortable device for taking notes in my college classes, has good battery life, and has an exceptional and color accurate screen for editing my photos (I'm a photographer). I'm well aware of all the limitations of an iPad (I've experienced MacOS, Windows, Linux, Android, iOS, etc.) and do not need it to replace any of my devices, but I see that this device may fulfill some needs/tasks that my other devices will not.
I’ve been trying to use the M4 iPad Pro for marking up PDFs with the Pencil. The PDF viewer in Files frequently crashes or fails to save. This is a pretty basic ‘Pro’ workflow that uses 100% Apple software and hardware. Yet it frequently results in lost work.
Wild how trash the baked-in PDF viewer is. I open up basically every PDF in GoodNotes (my iPad is a notebook replacement that I also get to use for entertainment) and it's more than fine, but kinda weird to get paid software for something so simple. Wonder if Apple notes has that kind of functionality.
@@kennetha6594 Well, right now their macbook air sales are for sure cannibalizing ipad pro+ magic keyboard sales, because why bother with an incompetent machine when you cane have a fully functioning laptop with keyboard and desktop OS for cheaper :)
I want to use my shiny new iPad Pro M4 as a laptop replacement, but I just can’t sadly. It’s NOT a Pro device, but I’m going to venture out to say that the word Pro from Apple is just highest tier offered. But this display is so easy to see in direct sunlight, it’s the perfect travel device. And when you do a lot of traveling you need it so I’m happy with my purchase.
I'm usually not commenting, but I just have to: This. You are so right. I've been using an iPad as my first ever Apple device (my school forced us to use some kind of apple device as they airdrop and airplay everything) and the consulted and overly complicated way of doing things is sooo bad. First: I could have never dreamed of editing a complicated video Fred on the same device I take my handwritten notes on. The performance and hardware is amazing, but when I do something on my real pc, it's just Soo much faster. A few examples: importing photos from the web into davinci: I have to "save to photos" then go into the photos app, then "save unmodified original" navigate to my external hard drive, as it doesn't save nor recommend the folder I'm working in and then go back to davinci to import it. And all the "iPad" like features it does have I can't mostly make use of: the holding on an image to only get e.g. a person is a cool feature, but not really reliable, and it saves it only in hevc which makes it unusable in many application. Navigating the OS is also so unintuitive, as having multiple windows of a browser is hard, and some things are hidden behind some random sub menus you first have to search for.
@@edcipriani8873 ... yes, coincidentally I am using the Files management at this very moment when I saw your reply notification, and it's ironic because I was just trying to navigate through the various files and it takes much more effort to do even a simple task, navigation interface and functionality is clumsy and poorly thought out, nothing is streamlined. It needs a major overhaul.
thanks for speaking out Quinn, i’ve been a dedicated iPad Pro user since the 2020 model and this year i upgraded to the M4 model with a keyboard and been loving it, but i feel like the Stage Manager and many of the basic features need some love, since it kinda works but as soon as you try to do something slightly more complex it tumbles down.
While stage manger is far from perfect, a number of the actions discussed can be done with keyboard shortcuts. For example, the show/hide dock shortcut is: opt + cmd + D, windows can be moved from display to display with: fn + ctrl + \ and windows can be added with: fn + ctrl + up arrow. fn + M brings up a list of shortcuts for multitasking and stage manager. Hopefully someone found this useful...
Does MacOS (well iPadOS here) have that keyboard shortcut like ChromeOS that will tell you all available keyboard shortcuts? It's such a great feature, and would be such a shame if Apple can't implement it.
12:37 OMG! Thank you! macOS on iPad is what people who don’t actually like iPads say. Content creators who love the Mac are reminded with each new iPad launch that iPads aren’t Macs and they poorly rate it because of that. I think your criticisms are valid though. Adding a trackpad and mouse support opened a Pandora’s box of new UX questions they have not shown they were ready to answer.
Have to massively disagree with both you and Quinn there. I want macOS on my iPad because it would allow me to fully utilise my iPad. I love iPad and have since the beginning (I even went out of the way to get the first iPad imported when they were initially US-only). But Apple has shown it doesn’t love the iPad enough to fix the fundamental issues with the OS. It works well for a lot of stuff, but for many other things it just falls short. Thats why I want Apple to provide an escape hatch and let me virtualise macOS. The hardware is capable of it. Hell, just make it allowable on the App Store so a 3rd party can do it, that way you could virtualise Linux and Windows too. Wouldn’t be as integrated as Apple could make it if they built it in, but would still provide 95% of what people would need. And it would give them the runway to finally get round to properly fixing iPadOS without continuing the handicap the amazing hardware
It doesn't need macOS to run on it, but at the very least, iPadOS needs to have a desktop-like experience with windows and multitasking, a way to connect apps together like the menu bar in macOS, a better files app with much more support, and extra things like a terminal, Xcode, etc. At least for the Pro models when they cost so much and have such powerful silicon in them.
@@pilkycrc Agreed. This weird push back to keep the iPad operating uniquely makes zeros sense. Like "OMG you want the iPad to have MORE functionality that macOS has which iPadOS doesn't? You must hate ipad." What a dumb ass take.
@@HimothyOHooliganyeah I fucking hate this take people have. Why would you be stupid enough to fight for having LESS features? If you don’t want to use the macos functionality just don’t use it. But Apple needs to make this an actual “pro” device. As it stands it works for people with inflated egos who think their work is “pro” when really they’re just sending emails on a 2 thousand dollar device. Let actual pros use all the power it has.
I love how you actually break Stage Manager down point by point to show why it doesn’t work. I’ve experienced so many of those frustrations myself trying to push myself to use Stage Manager on the iPad (I have very few issues using it on the Mac, but the iPad is a nightmare). People keep asking for some overhaul of iPadOS, but the thing they should focus on first is fixing the absurd amount of bugs with Stage Manager and getting it up to the quality Apple software usually is at.
Thanks for the highest-quality product reviews I’ve found recently. I really appreciated your Vision Pro review, which was the only one that actually talked about the issues I ran into while using it daily!
4:11 you mean the U2 chip right? With the advent of the new U2 i don’t think most of their products would be using the U1 with the exception of airtags as it came out much earlier in their product lifecycle
I think each major app is great on iPad. iPad OS system-wise however, it's a mess. The Files app needs to be a major update for sure. It's been years since the files app came out.
I use both a MacBook and iPad and what I've learned from each platform is the MacBook is the "true portable workstation' while the iPad is a nice lay back type of product. I like the iPad for not doing professional anything, but for turning my brain off once in a while. When I'm on Mac, I can have 10 things going on easily. with iPad, the limitations forces me to one thing at a time, and for a person like me, I kinda like that. Though if Files and AirDrop can be actually useful, that would be kinda nice.
That's true about iPadOS being a focusOS but you can run remote desktop or cloud pc and use it as a thin client to override it's limitations and run full desktop. Best go for a cheap model and ignore the over-priced pro models for this as you don't need the top end hardware due to iPadOS limitations.
I’m convinced that it’s just what you’re used to. I’m a professional artist and I ditched my macbook pro for an iPad Pro back in 2018 and haven’t looked back. Sure it was a bumpy transition at first, but now I have totally transitioned to an iOS only workflow. Being an artist made the transition easier cause the iPad is the best digital sketchbook ever created. But i have come to enjoy doing everything on my iPad more than I ever did on my macbook. For me, It’s better at surfing the web, for writing on, for photo & video editing and for media consumption. Plus it’s lighter and thinner than a macbook pro. I could never go back to using a laptop.
I bought one (11 inches M4 Pro) and I´m really happy with the power it has (coming from an iPad Air 3), but there´s no way they can keep pushing it back with iPadOS. We don´t need MacOS on the iPad, we just need iPadOS to be GOOD.
so with stage manager you've got to use the left panel (just drag the mouse towards it, but make sure you have it turned on in settings). you can drag any window from a stage over there to your current stage, or tuck it back in. if you want to send a window from one display for the other it's command-shift-\. you can find the global hotkeys for it by holding the globe key just like you bring up an app's hotkeys by holding the command key. that said i *do* agree with your thesis, working with my m1 air as my main device is really inconvenient for some things, for instance just now i had to unplug my external display and restart youtube because on my setup if i try to type a comment in youtube with an external monitor plugged in it often puts the comment entry interface on the external monitor then freezes that monitor's display. workarounds workarounds workarounds. but keyboard shortcuts are not absent even though it doesn't really signpost that you can hold the globe key or the command key to learn keyboard shortcuts, and stage manager is at least a little better with them and if you never use the 'add another window' and use the recent apps interface by dragging the cursor agains the left side of the screen (with the setting for recent apps turned on in multitasking->stage manager). do i kinda wish i had bought a mac mini? well yes, but it feels like the ipad gets more out of the same 8gb of ram the mac mini i'd have had the budget for would have had. this thing is never slow it's just insipid in how it acts sometimes
7:05 i agree, the files app is such a menace for me to deal with. I largely use Documents for file operations. from time to time it'll freeze and be blank, only with a few out of all the pinned locations showing on the left. it'll even freeze up select other apps like Status, i wish for a safely eject drive button as well. Also i do have a file transfer progress indicator outside of the wheel on top the file, it's usually near the create folder button on the top right for me.
As someone who only uses the iPad with a Pencil and nothing else it’s insane that after all these years there’s not an option to use both the on screen keyboard and handwriting using the pencil. It’s supposed to automatically switch between them but using the pencil often means every following text input is expecting it, even after it’s been snapped back on the side to charge.
There are MacOS issues that haven't been fixed and have been here for years. For me, each new version of Mac OS gets worse and worse. Even though I'm using MacOS and not PadOS I feel your pain. I still use an Intel MacBook Pro.
Finally! some one who isn't just saying make the iPad a Mac. You took the time to explain what is wrong with the OS . You just didn't just copy what every other reviewer said! Well done I ordered the 11inch iPad Pro from Verizon. I have the older iPad m1 12inch but it was too big. so I understand the frustration !
I was using an iPad Pro for years and finally switched to a Macbook Air M2 last month. The thing that drove me over the edge was the fact that the website editor that I use was seemingly incompatible with iPad OS even though it can run the "desktop version" of websites. Even though that was probably a very niche personal issue, I felt like it was indicative of a larger problem which is that most professional work that can possibly be done on an iPad can be definitely be done faster and easier on a laptop.
I traded in my 11" M1 iPad Pro a few weeks ago because i knew new iPads were in the works and because my iPad needed a new battery. I was hoping something new would make it worth the upgrade but after the announcement, i was underwhelmed. As a photographer, the iPad Pro is definitely pro enough for me and my workflow. The only thing I wish for is Apple bringing back Aperture so i can finally stop paying for Adobe. In the mean time, I'm gonna go back to the M1 iPad Pro, maybe upgrade to the. bigger screen.
Gosh, if iPad had a terminal. As a coder, remote work would be a blast. For me files app is missing two things: toggle for hidden files and marking certain iCloud files and folers as not unloadable (always downloaded) - I had an issue that when my car broke down and I wanted to call for help files unloaded a document where I had an insurance number and for some bizarre reason I couldn't download it. Same went for obsidian and iCloud sync. I was on a tech event that took place in some basement pub with no signal I couldn't make notes because all the files were unloaded
I’m so sick of UA-camrs assuming every person who uses a computer is a video editor, like that’s the only reason anyone would use a device other than a phone.
Fantastic information and reasoning. I love the iPad and wanted to want to buy the new one but... things are not working on the level needed. I got a new MacBook Pro and didn't use my old one for about two weeks and turned it back on. Once it connected to the internet my iCloud reminders specifically started disappearing. I use it for work with multiple businesses even having TimeMachine setup, using iCloud+ synced to all devices, and I then tried to restore from iCloud on the web which didn't work. I talked to an Apple Support Engineer (supposedly) but they confirmed I had done everything I could've but once it's gone from iCloud there's no way for anyone to get it back. In this case it was important reminders and I'll survive, but I no longer trust them with my mission critical data sadly I will have to make sure I have the data locally. It was a surprisingly grounding experience to have.
@@TalesOfWar Not the best comparison when Windows hasn't been updated since windows 7. Whereas MacOS is modern and capable. There are so many missing features from iPad OS that to get feature parody with MacOS its probably a better investment to add a new Tablet UI. MacOS already runs iOS apps. Its just a settings and desktop UI that they need to build...
Just wanted to point out that you can open a second window of the same app by selecting the same app you’re currently using from your App Library. You’re not limited to just what’s already open on other stages. Not the smoothest implementation but it works. And if you hold Shift while selecting another app to add to a stage it will add the app to the current stage rather than creating a new one. Also you are able to see all open windows for a single app, you just long press the app’s icon and select ‘Show All Windows.’ And there’s one last thing you missed. To move a window between the display and iPad there is a hotkey. It’s Globe+Control+Forward Slash
I decided to call it quits on iPad and pre ordered one of those Microsoft Pro tablets. The truth is, I really need a Windows laptop that I can draw on in one device. I originally bought an iPad in 2020 to draw on, and I absolutely loved it. But then as I got into more travel over recent years I've found myself needing a laptop more and more. And while it's true, you can probably force an iPad to do a lot of things a laptop can -- I just don't want to stress about it too much while travelling. Furthermore, my home base computer is a hefty PC rig, so I've already got 30 years of experience with Windows. Ipad will always be a beloved drawing tablet though. And I'll always have my 2020 model.
As someone who uses Stage Manager all the time on my iPad Pro 12.9" M2, I can confirm with you about the limitations of iPadOS in general, especially in Stage Manager. I really like the concept of it, but it still frustrating for me to use it. Sure, I can get job done with my iPad as a laptop, but there are a TON of things to be improved to be able to use as a laptop. Before you ask, yes, I absolutely love iPad Pro, but I won't recommend it to you if you want to use it as a laptop. Also, it is a bummer for not supporting the new Apple Pencil Pro...
The reason why iPad can never replace a desktop for me is it will never let me be messy. Let me explain. My usual computing environment runs 20+ chrome tabs, 10+ Excel sheets, 4-5 PowerPoint windows, Teams and Tableau. I am usually working on multiple different types of project at any given time requiring me to switch between these windows fairly quickly and without reloading(no aggressive memory management). Both of which can be easily done on a Windows or Mac computer but I can’t even comprehend running this workflow on an iPad.
I came here for this rant because I had the same rant yesterday and decided I can't be the only one. I hope so much that apple starts listening to this stuff!!
If the iPad isn't supposed to be a Mac and be simpler and different, why make it so powerful? Why is it the first device to have the M4 and not a MacBook? Apple clearly want you to think it can be used in place of a desktop like a Mac.
As to why make it so powerful: test case for the new M4 chip? To ramp up the production for the upcoming Macs. And testing in a constrained environment like a thin iPad can be helpful.
I just got an M4 iPad Pro as my first ever iPad with iPadOS and while I love this thing and don't really plan on doing any crazy workflow intensive things on it, I was really disappointed in the multitasking functionality. Stage Manager seemed super cool when I first enabled it. But oh man, the learning curve was nuts. I had no idea why when I closed all the app windows open it would randomly send me to another app I had open prior. Turns out, I was opening apps one by one each into their own Stage without knowing it (because this is never explained to you) and when you close all the apps in one stage, it goes to the next most recent one automatically even if there's only one app window open on it. I hate this. When I close all the apps on my screen, I want to go back to my home screen. I want the default behavior to be when I touch to open an app it gets added to the current stage, not a new one by itself. I had to watch YT videos to figure out how this even all worked. Not user friendly at all and even though I know how it works now, it's still clunky and not how I'd like it to work. I'm really hoping Stage Manager gets major updates with iPadOS 18 or they ditch it and give us a real desktop-like environment with the ability to move app icons anywhere and windows over the home screen.
I thought the M4 would be a good upgrade for myself as a digital artist. But what I was met with was huge headaches and migraines due to the display's utilisation of PWM. And to top this, nothing has really changed. I could probably even get away with the A12X let alone the M1.
You can say nothing’s changed on the Mac either or any other computer not made by Apple. What exactly do you expect to change? Computers are fairly mature and all move incrementally. An M1 is overkill for most users on the Macs as well as iPads. 99% of people could get by with an MBA and a base iPad. Those could be catagorized as need items. Things like iPad Pros and MacBook Pros can be thought of as want items.
I bought an iPad mini to do some basic UA-cam work and it's been pretty disappointing. Use case 1: backup files from my GoPro to external drive using a small hub. It seemed like a good idea until I realized there is no copy progress dialog so I have no idea what it's doing. Use case 2: quick YT short story while I'm having a coffee. Connect the GoPro to the iPad expecting to be able to select a file in YT Studio... nope, I don't get access to the full editor, which is a software limitation I know. For other things like just watching YT or viewing channel analytics it works great. My luggage is limited on my bike so it's nice not having a device with a big footprint. But if I get serious and need to do some typing... most 60% keyboards are still pretty big, and higher profile than my 14" MPB so even though I don't need a big bag, I'm still taking up more space. I can make it work for short trips, but if I actually want to produce a video I go for the laptop. Sure I could use my 12.9" Pro... but I might as well just bring my laptop.
Actually, I just noticed that if I copy files, there IS a progress indicator on the file(s) and one in the title bar. I don't know why I didn't notice before!
I’m so over this absurd obsession UA-camrs have with using the iPad to replace their laptop. You all get that 95% of us will never be able to use an iPad for work, right? And it has nothing to do with the OS. It’s because most work uses proprietary software. If employers want to rewrite all of their software for iPad, I’m sure they could, but to what end? I have 3 huge monitors at work, I don’t want to use an iPad. I get the iPad workflow can work for people editing video or photos, it’s just not the primary use case for almost everyone that uses an iPad. LOL we are using it to watch movies and TV on a portable, bright OLED screen 12 inches from our eyeballs, and using the M4 to keep our games snappy! We are carrying around almost the entirety of human knowledge in a slab of metal and glass that is less than an inch thick and weighs a pound. We should celebrate what makes things great and stop tearing things down for clicks.
It’s not because they necessarily want the iPad to do that kind of work. It’s because as it stands, there should be nothing stopping an iPad to fulfill desktop OS function. It’s almost like how like some EV car manufacturers software lock performance that already exists in the hardware. The iPad can do the tasks, and with its amazing screen or Apple Pencil, it might even do some desktop software things better. If the iPad had full blown Mac OS, I literally wouldn’t buy another MacBook, and Apple knows this. This is the reason why reviewers are frustrated. It’s capable of a lot, but it’s being handicapped so that we can never utilize that potential should we want to. It doesn’t matter if most people won’t need/use it, why not give yourself the choice if the need comes up?
@@WillBiavati based on the fact that almost every tech UA-camr has created multiple videos around using the iPad to replace their laptops, I think I feel safe in my assumption that UA-camrs are obsessed with it. Obviously not ALL of them, but a lot of them that do relevant content. "There should be nothing stopping an iPad to fulfill desktop OS function." How about it's not a desktop? The processor in my Apple Watch could probably mimic some desktop processes but that doesn't make it a good idea. And I'll say it again, the OS is not the limiting factor FCP didn't work on an iPad until Apple made an app for it. FCP functionality didn't come from an OS update, it came from the app. The only way you are going to get desktop functionality is to get the developer to rewrite their app for iPad. The only things I see most UA-camrs talking about that concerns the OS are basically just multitasking and file managing and you can multitask and manage files just fine, it's just a matter of adjusting your workflow which some people will only do kicking and screaming. "It doesn't matter if most people won't need/use it." LOL spoken like someone that doesn't make billions of $2k tablets. I think when you spend billions making something, you tend to want to focus on the things that matter to the most amount of people.
A tech reviewer should be someone challenging the claims of a manufacturer so that customers are aware of its pitfalls before purchasing the device. Clearly, Apple thinks this iPad is a "Pro" device and markets the device that way. For this reason I can understand the obsession. If as a customer you are aware you are paying extra for the "Pro" features because you want to binge your TV shows on an OLED screen, then this type of content is not for you indeed.
What’s the point of spending $1300 on something when aside from the screen the $500 one can do all of it? And why would Apple be selling this Magic Keyboard and make ads like “what’s a computer” and try to include all these video editing apps if they didn’t want these types of professionals to use the iPad as replacements? I don’t think anyone’s really deluding themselves into thinking the iPad can work for replacing most people’s laptop jobs. I work at a hospital and our EHR obviously doesn’t work on iPads, for example. But it can’t even replace the job of laptops for the careers it seems meant for
I agree with the placement of the do not disturb key. It can be annoying. I don’t notice the tilting on a flat surface unless I aggressively poke the screen though.
Yeah... despite the priase, for it's price and it's hardware, the iPad Pro M4 is literally POINTLESS given it's current software. And that won't change since Tim needs you to keep buying Macs as well....
Full disclosure - I clicked on this expecting it to be a click-bait style rant. Which was unfair of me. This is one of the best reviews that I’ve seen of an Apple product, and so thank you. I too love the iPad. I work on the go and so it tends to be my primary machine - most of the time. I can complete 90% of my workflow on the iPad (falling back on a desktop for the remaining 10%). Your review forensically nails the many limitations and issues with iPadOS. As you say, it’s not that you can’t get serious work done on the iPad - you can. It’s that the OS makes many seemingly basic tasks incredibly convoluted. The failure to support true multitasking (as evidenced by the compiling issue with Final Cut Pro) is perhaps the most egregious of the many omissions and limitations. At this stage it is both unacceptable and truly baffling. What I’m not able to resolve is whether these limitations are a deliberate strategy on Apple’s part (to keep us buying Macs), a lack of understanding as to what Pros actually required, or just plain ol’ neglect. I strongly suspect it’s a little of all three.
I bit the bullet and purchased the new 13" iPad Pro with 1tb after selling my M1 iPad Pro a few years ago for similar reasons to your complaints... it just lacks basic features and I stupidly made a mistake again. I'm holding out hope for WWDC, otherwise I may just sell it. Right now its a sketch book, media consuming device, and secondary monitor.. I really want more from it.
You can bring up the dock on the external monitor by pushing your cursor against the bottom edge of the screen. If you have your iPad display arranged “below”, you need to do it to the left or right of where your cursor passes to the iPad screen. Compressing and uncompressing works in the Files app. That said, very valid points! Cheers :)
Typing on a 13” M4 iPad, used it for a week. Thanks for one of the most comprehensive agreeable, original and confirming reviews. No repeated stuff from most other reviews. A lot of resistance in the flow of thoughts and actions just cause the ui isn’t optimised for logical workflows. Oddly since it’s an iPad it SHOULD be the most flowy integrated experience especially since they themselves release a keyboard of their own. Of course it isn’t easy to implement functionality both touched based and keyboard and trackpad based but it really has been far too long.
I just did today! I’ve owned two. The IPad 2 and the IPad Air 2. Battery was shot on mine also! Went to Best Buy today and got my son a new laptop for the start of his freshman year of college this fall and decided it was time for a new iPad for me! I got the Pro 512GB in silver. Go for it! You deserve it!
I am one of those you mention who want MacOS on the iPad Pros. I love the iPad for certain tasks like CAD in Shapr3D, drawing in Procreate, casual internet browsing, watching shows while cooking, and taking hand written notes during meetings, but I am sick of carrying two devices and needing to jump between two UIs. I can’t 3D print, use the terminal, do any real coding, or extensively use the Google Suite of apps (needed for work). I’m a long time Mac user, but my next purchase will either be an iPad w/MacOS or an ARM Surfacebook.
That lack of progress bar for moving files is so annoying on iPhone as well. Connecting a USB C card reader to my iPhone or iPad and then copying some very large 4K video files from my action camera…. I tried to save multiple videos to my normal photos app the other day and had no idea until it finished if it was even doing it!
Coming from windows and android I gotta say this baby is powerful for cranking out my videos and photos but I still can't get the hang of the file system. Is there any 3rd party app that makes it less wonky ?
iPad OS is really what's holding me back from buying the M4 iPad. Also I don't like Apple "exclusivity" which makes the pen backward incompatible. I'm 100% sure they'll do the same thing once M4 iPad is not the newest model. If only Apple is an open company, it'll be perfect. Customer will be very loyal. Sales guaranteed to be good
I am not a pro. I am a guy that needed a laptop that would work for a long time and not give me a migraine to use. I am a novelist that needed something to do research, edit manuscripts, occasionally do graphic design, and other than that just be a portable laptop. It works fine for my, admittedly average, workload. Not really sure what is so difficult with stage manager. Editing video, photographs, these are not the only way to be a “Pro”. I feel like you made a base assumption because IPAD OS is limiting for you. Those people that need more or different capability than I do should probably buy a MacBook over the IPAD. All I am saying is that different people require different tools. Just because you need a hammer doesn’t make a screwdriver irrelevant.
Some other things I'd love to see them improve in iPadOS: - “desktop class” Safari still doesn't work like MacOS Safari for many sites even with a mouse attached. E.g. it doesn't support drag/drop API or custom right click menus - Add virtual trackpad so we can control cursor and use "desktop class" websites (e.g. ones that use hover events) even without a mouse attached - Add missing escape button on virtual keyboard - Add ability to run VMs of other OSes (Mac and Linux) for specific apps and dev use cases
Squandered by the terrain! Absolutely wonderful analogy! Awesome wordplay. That alone makes this the most well done video you have ever produced, and I like, well, almost every one. Keep up the great work and Thank you for your brilliance! ❤
I've been using the M1 iPad 2021 since its release and initially got excited with each iPad OS update. However, I ended up disappointed with the poor implementation, which made the overall experience frustrating and unreliable. Now, my iPad mostly sits in a drawer, and I occasionally use it to watch Netflix or do some administrative work on Safari. I've never felt the need to upgrade the device. Kudos to you for addressing all the frustrating issues that iPad users have been facing over the years. Great video-your work stands out from other tech UA-camrs!
I’m on new iPad Pro 11”. So much better than my other iPad airs and iPad Pro. Screen and speed amazing. Love the thinness. Keyboard is awesome. Even at $300. Super happy so far with who,e package. But for me it’s a tablet. I use Mac Studio and MacBook Pro for desktop 🖥️
One huge problem is that the print interface one the iPad is missing many of the key features of macOS such as changing what direction the text faces when flipping the page over.
Quinn...THANK YOU!!! This is exactly the kind of content I love to see you make. I truly hope that Craig and others at Apple watch this and take action. Your criticisms are bang-on and cannot be refuted. You didn't provide an opinion piece on how you dislike aspects of iPad OS; instead you provided an objective spotlight on many of its shortcomings that reviewers overlook but users experience on the daily. If I were on the iPad OS team at Apple and watched this I'd be thoroughly embarrassed right now. Obviously they've gotten complacent due to lack of competition in the tablet space, but I'd argue that Apple has historically pushed themselves to do better, regardless of what the industry was up to. It's time for them to get serious about the iPad software. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
I have a M2 iPad pro 11" which I use for art and media consumption. I never use stage manager. It doesn't use all of the screen real estate and leaves big unused portions of the screen on every side, which is frustrating.
I bought both and the MacBook Air is such a beautifully sleek and portable device with full macOS. Still love the iPad Pro in touchscreen mode, but the keyboard setup is an abomination compared to the MacBook Air. I’m a very pro user and the Air keeps up with 99% of what I do without closing things regularly.
This is the first video that is actually properly shows basic workflows hindered by by iPadOS. I used mine just fine as my everyday for music recording, finance, light video editing, and artwork. I even updated some of my other peripherals (printer, router, etc.) firmware as well as transferring my Switch’s SD card from one card to the other with the lackluster file manager. But I also had to rethink how a computer is used and that’s not very intuitive. I for one had a blast figuring this out but a professional that needs to get things done for deadlines cannot go through this learning curve. IPadOS is good for me but I see it’s not for everyone.
Most other tech youtubers have basically released the same video for each ipad review since 2018. I appreciate Quinn actually reviewing each one
Truly. The other ones just feel lazy. Borderline hot takes. Smart sounding Hot Takes based of research using only first party sources (i.e. from the company....) isn't "news" nor unique.

Finally a proper review! Not one where I’m being read back all the specs that Apple already talked about in the Keynote.
All of them are in the same format. WOW wow wow the hardware blah blah blah than iPadOS blah blah blah done. Ahhh and run some benchmarks.
Most reviewers were just quoting whole marketing bs including "oh it's so thin" while it's only thin on 13".
@@jackyharuhiko This is so true its exhausting

Yep! Which is insane.
And don't you dare send it to the background. It's so annoying
Also, don’t try to export to photos if you don’t have enough space available, silent failure and re-export to follow.
Lol. When I’m uploading files to onedrive, I have to change settings to enable longer unlock screen time, then change back later
Oops, looks like I accidentally enabled DND eight hours ago. *That sure is a bummer.*

To be honest Ive tried both and found the iPad to be far superior to the Surface
It's always been just another tablet. I just gave mine away a few years ago. Constantly struggling with the OS to do anything other than watch a video or send a message made me tired.
This is by far the best review.
Thanks!!

Still the best iPad IMO, but I'd rather pick up a 5th gen on clearance for $549 for the 256GB version (a price i've seen regularly and running for multiple days, from multiple retailers)
The iPad Mini.

This should be a pinned comment. With that processing power, I wonder why they don't make it easier to multitask 😮

@@aravindpallippara1577I wholeheartedly agree. I don’t know how engineers will go about this pal. Time will tell.
Thanks for the in-depth and comprehensive reviews!
M1 iPad Air is on sale at Walmart for $400. If I was buying an iPad right now, that's the one I'd get. The new models have only functioned to make the old stuff an easier pill to swallow.
Still I will prefer iPad Air with M2 for landscape camera.
@@DonaldPiperEar I don't think the camera angle is worth $150 (+ a little more storage and performance). It will still do all the same stuff you'd likely ever want to do.
Wtf? Only $400? I should buy it if I were you.
Nah I'd get an OLED screen and never have to worry about buying an ipad again
Still blows my mind why there isn’t a plug and play ipad monitor feature yet..
@@npcimknot958but there is… it’s called Sidecar and OP references it when he said “use it as a secondary monitor”. It even works wirelessly!

Returned mine as well. OLED was just an okay upgrade IMO compared to the M1 Pro.
All of your concerns with the Files app are my same concerns. It’s the main reason I keep looking at a new MacBook Air instead of an iPad Air or Pro.
1:42 What would it take to make this a Das Keyboard Cherry MX brown? Those 3 dots still there for connectivity? Did anyone document this connection?
The worst part is that Samsung Dex is around for years already, and would be great for the iPad.

I'm usually not commenting, but I just have to:
This.
I agree about the terrible Files lack of function, it's just embarrassing for Apple.
I am asking this because I wasn't sure - are you referring to the file management on the iPad?
@@mlindholm yes hold down the globe key to show all system shortcuts, hold down the command key to show all in app shortcuts for the highlighted app

macOS on iPad is what people who don’t actually like iPads say.
Quinn isn’t a true Scotsman.

Yes but I don’t want to say it and summon Bono.
I just want to be able to code on one natively
The first real review I have seen of the iPad. Nicely done!
Waiting for that review was such a pain. Thank good it happened now.
That is true, there is a bug for my language settings which haven’t been fixed for 7-8 years.
Finally! some one who isn't just saying make the iPad a Mac. You took the time to explain what is wrong with the OS . You just didn't just copy what every other reviewer said! Well done I ordered the 11inch iPad Pro from Verizon. I have the older iPad m1 12inch but it was too big. so I understand the frustration !
Was waiting on video, even commented on your insta post! Great to finally watch it!
Holy @#^% this is 100% spot on. I don’t want MacOS on the iPad! I just want iPadOS to be good!! I hope they take your input.
In the mean time, I'm gonna go back to the M1 iPad Pro, maybe upgrade to the. bigger screen.
lol I miss 3D Touch
At this point they just need to make a Touch (iPad) view for MacOS. Wouldn't be that difficult to

2:56 Is this how a baby iPad mini is made? 👀
Wondering what Steve would think about this netbook+stylus you're talking about
I came here for this rant because I had the same rant yesterday and decided I can't be the only one.
A Ferrari and a van could have the same horsepower but would you say they need to do the same thing because of that?
As to why make it so powerful: test case for the new M4 chip? To ramp up the production for the upcoming Macs. And testing in a constrained environment like a thin iPad can be helpful.
Also the iPad was always going to receive the M4 which is just A18X
And for the power there’s plenty of use cases that require that power. 2/3d art and design, music, photography/video, gaming etc
I would say get the Air then. Any M series iPad is going to be significantly faster and allow for more layers due to more ram and a faster soc
I saw M1 iPad Airs for sale at Walmart for like $400. If I was buying an iPad right now, that's the one I'd get.
PWM? Pulse width modulation...?
@@derkaiser9881 yeah if you won’t need the better pencil and extra storage it’s a better deal
I don’t notice the tilting on a flat surface unless I aggressively poke the screen though.
but Mr. Snazzy Labs, I like the iPad Pro
This is the only honest review of the iPad and iPad os as a platform to this day 👌🏻
Yeah... despite the priase, for it's price and it's hardware, the iPad Pro M4 is literally POINTLESS given it's current software.
7:19 Atleast for microsoft office apps this is not true. If i klick / tap on for example a xlsx file, it will open in the excel app.
I'm loving mine. But not as a main computer. Use to make thumbnails and manage my youtube channel. 11 pro
Should I upgrade if I have the IPad Pro 10.5 (2017)? My battery is a goner.
@@1pineapplecrush Thanks for sharing! How does the new IPad Pro experience compare to your previous older one?
This is the only review I’ve seen on the new iPad that doesn’t sugarcoat or use evasive language to describe it. Good job!
iPad OS is really what's holding me back from buying the M4 iPad.
Some other things I'd love to see them improve in iPadOS:
- “desktop class” Safari still doesn't work like MacOS Safari for many sites even with a mouse attached. E.g. it doesn't support drag/drop API or custom right click menus
- Add virtual trackpad so we can control cursor and use "desktop class" websites (e.g. ones that use hover events) even without a mouse attached
- Add missing escape button on virtual keyboard
- Add ability to run VMs of other OSes (Mac and Linux) for specific apps and dev use cases
Squandered by the terrain! Absolutely wonderful analogy! Awesome wordplay. That alone makes this the most well done video you have ever produced, and I like, well, almost every one. Keep up the great work and Thank you for your brilliance! ❤
Totally agree that "squandered by the terrain" is an excellent analogy here. But: could you explain the wordplay you're seeing?
Never mentioned the lack of updated
FCP.
Truly do not understand why anyone would spend the same amount of money on this when they could just get a MacBook Air that does its job way better.
