Which is why Apple will never allow MacOS on the iPad. MacOS allows traditional software acquisition channels where Apple just provides the hardware and OS, possibly a licensed feature or API, , where IOS / iPadOS app store means Apple gets to steal a 30% cut of all app vendor revenue.
Ya'll are looking at this backwards. What's really going to happen is that Apple will eventually dump MacOS on the desktop / laptops and branch a desktop iPadOS which will then allow Apple to theive 30% of that software revenue as well.
Mark my words, Apple is determined to replicate their IOS app store model across every product line they have, finish walling off those gardens and ensure all software companies pay for the privilege of selling software, subscriptions or services to all Apple product users.

For years I would like to have the ability to do software development on the iPad as easily as I do on my Mac. There was a move towards it with Swift Playground having some of the capabilities of Xcode, but it just stalled and never matured to anything beyond playfulness. I still lack comprehensive editors and IDEs like Visual Studio Code and the JetBrains suite. I also think that some software development workflows lean a lot on switching between apps and having them side-by-side, which means that iPadOS needs to improve its multi-tasking capabilities to allow to do this more conveniently. I also use a lot of community tools which I think would mean that the barrier to create an app will need to be lowered for an iPad work-env to be as lively as a desktop one. I can't work without brew. This can either be sandboxed or managed system-wide somehow, but this needs to be solved. And I'm all for what you're saying with not having macOS on the iPad. It's just that iPadOS needs to improve to accommodate these very real requirements, or introduce software development workflow alternatives that solve the same basic needs. For instance the graphical flow editor of Unreal Engine can be amazing to work with on the iPad.

It doesn't have to be macOS but that would be ideal as there is so much already available for macOS. Or for a tablet, to be able to do that or run the UI on the tablet screen and connecting a bluetooth keyboard and mouse. Unfortunately, we all know the main reason they haven't done this is likely because they want to pressure people to have to buy more of their hardware. Their laptop and desktop sales would likely decline if people could run a desktop OS off their phones and tablets. It just really sucks that they may avoid doing this for as long as possible.

@@jackedup447 Sure. Though it seems a bit strange to me that this intended market doesn't include developing apps for the iPad itself, when they offer an M2 processor in a 13 inch tablet with a keyboard dock that surely could be perfectly suitable for that if they let you do it.
And then for the most part I can use Windows, macOS, or Linux for any professional or non-professional purpose. So the iPad is artificially limited and only suitable for certain things, it doesn't really make sense to talk about it as a replacement or alternative to a real computer in any general sense. Even if it's a useful tool for certain things.
But it also *could* be suitable for all of this. If the keyboard dock works well enough the 13 inch iPad pro could be a totally fine Laptop replacement with an unrestricted OS. Presumably the M2 chip should be able to drive dual external monitors (not sure if the iPad allows this currently) so it could be docked and work as a desktop. And performance should be good enough for most things. But Apple doesn't let you do that. Probably to ensure they can keep making revenue from the app store and in-app purchases more than any philosophical or design concern. So the iPad doesn't seem particularly useful to me personal, even though it *could* be if Apple *let* it be.

How lucky are we that in answering the prompt to “make a channel that appeals to Apple users,” LMG and Mac Address didn’t create a channel based on specs, leaks, news, and the latest Apple controversy wheel. Nor did they go for something that would vaguely appeal to “hipsters in coffee shops,” the status obsessed, fans of lifestyle brands, or those who buy the devices because they look nice. The HUGE shining star of the Mac IS it's full featured Office products. Having been a previous MS Office user since it's FIRST version and fed up with it's bugs, using Pages and Numbers was an instant pure joy for me. Numbers and Pages are HUGE advantages that Apple has over any other product, and it's included in the MacBook! But I don't like the fact that it's NOT the same full featured product under IOS. Apple missed the boat there, which is why IOS needs to be dumped.

Like he brought up file management which has been kinda improved and I like that you have access to your different cloud storage solutions. I would also like to see iPadOS treat video out differently. 90% of the time, it mirrors the screen the same way you mirror a screen on airplay. It’s full of compression, there’s some slight delay which makes it kinda nauseating if you want to hook it up to a big screen to work on a Google doc which is already painful enough on the iPad, or play some games. I don’t need a full desktop mode but maybe don’t leave it to app developers to support external display to make use of the video out capability of the very expensive tablet I just bought

I've used an iPad Pro for my work as a classical singer and stage actor for years, and I switched from Windows to MacOS a bit over one year ago because of the fantastic used prices the Mac Mini M1 was going for (Lockdowns weren't kind to stage artists' wallets), but I miss the touchscreen. On Windows I used the touchscreen all the time whether I was making demos or promotional material (videos, photos, flyers, etc.), creating music in my spare time or using Notion.
Storage and assets organisation is also horrific, because file explorer on Windows while not great is decades ahead of MacOS, and don't even get me started on Apple's complete lack of developer support!
iPadOS while theoretically more limited has almost never been a frustrating experience to me. It's logical and friendly and highly conducive to quick turnarounds and creative flow. If anything, I want a juiced-up iPadOS on the Mac.

Admittedly it's gotten a LOT better but still feels like there's too much hand holding for what amounts to a Pro device that can cost as much as a new Macbook Pro when kitted out. When they initially said Stage Manager and External Display support would be limited to the M series chips it made me slightly optimistic that they might start developing a "Pro" version of iPadOS strictly limited for the Pro models. I think Samsung's Dex would be a fantastic model to follow if this is where they choose to go for it in the future. Restricting a more mature desktop experience to docked would be a very fair compromise.

There's no reason that Apple couldn't expose developer APIs for the specific human interfaces that the iPad has; they already do this for touchpad gestures on MacBooks and the similar-but-different gestures on the Magic Mouse.

I will say Johnathan's needs are slightly more complicated than most: For quick edits and shiz, basic assemblies, I can see this working well for editors like me, especially when mostly working with 1080 and 4k content, in MOV and MPEG formats. In those cases, it's close to miraculous.

I don't know if this necessarily will add to the argument for the iPad to stay as an iPad but here goes. I think the trouble with the iPads, and probably tablets in general is that they try to be too many things at once. The laptop is designed to replace the desktop, smartphones are designed to replace the telephone, so I think the best thing for the iPad is that it needs to find something that only it could do very well, and I think that lies with media consumption. It's great for watching videos and movies on the go, playing some games, and reading books. It already has apple's M processors that are capable enough to run games like resident evil village (albeit not in its most detailed setting), so I think having it as a gaming machine that could also do some light productive work would be stellar. Another thing would be that iPad is a great substitute for a book in general. Anything that you can do on a book can be done on the iPad, like taking notes and drawing (on a professional level even). The pencil makes the digital arts use case for the iPad really a compelling point to consider.
I think the thing is that just because the iPad has computer-level hardware, people expect it to become a computer. When the tablet form factor came out I don't think anyone was expecting it to do any desktop-grade workloads on a portable slab like the iPad, people use it for better consumption of media by simply being a portable larger screen. I think that's the key, being a relatively large screen that you can bring anywhere, and that's why I think it's important that the iPad remains as an i-PAD. It shouldn't lose its main appeal.

I don't see why Apple doesn't implement something similar to the SteamDeck. You can have it in 'gaming' mode and 'desktop' mode by pushing a button in the power menu. iPad could easily toggle between what it is now, and a MacOS environment couldn't it? Also, I've recently been using my 11" 2018 iPad Pro in Sidecar and have even set it up as my primary monitor a few times. The screen resolution is certainly sharp enough to be used as an 11" macbook display. The only difficulty was using programs like Adobe Illustrator where I have a large amount of toolbars open on the right hand side of the screen. Otherwise, it was more than sufficient and obviously a fair trade-off for portability.

The issue I ran into is many of the apps or games I was using were not designed to take advantage of the touch features since those were considered secondary. And while the iPad Pro needs to justify its greedy little obsession with all that power, slapping Mac OS on an iPad would be more of a waste than anything else because its not built with touch screen use in mind.

That if I don't want one of the limited code editors on iPadOS, I'm going to have to remote into another system to do my work there.
Certainly, there are use cases like the slick video editing presented in here. But there are plenty of us who use our iPads for less creative work, and want the flexibility the hardware is capable of.
Sometimes it's nice having the rounded edges that are impossible to cut yourself with. I like when stuff just works. This is one of the things I love about macOS. iPad should just quick-boot to MacOS when you connect a keyboard and then have shared storage, shared settings, and some Handoff features. Then you'd get a bonus touchscreen and Pencil input when using MacOS. Disconnect the keyboard and it would go right back to being an iPad and save the MacOS state for when you reconnect the keyboard. They would slowly merge the two operating systems over time (like they're already doing) to make them one seamless OS but quick switching between iPadOS and MacOS is the way to go for the time being.

The iPad Pro needs to ship with three storage drives. A drive dedicated to iPadOS (32GB should be sufficient), a drive dedicated to macOS (32GB might be fine but let's give it 64GB to be safe), and a shared data drive (this would be the capacity you choose when buying the device, the other two cannot be accessed by the end user).
Now if you want to use the iPad as an iPad you do your normal stuff. If you need Mac functionality you restart into macOS and get full Mac capability. If you want to return to the iPad interface you restart into that mode. The dedicated storage drives for iPadOS and macOS would not be user accessable without terminal commands to unlock access, they would only be there for the system so there is always free space to be able to download and install an update to the OS and to prevent the device from being unable to boot up because of a completely full storage drive, something that happens more frequently with iPhones but I wouldn't be surprised if iPads and Macs have the same issue from time to time.

So I have a different take. I use my iPad for my main computing on the go. I am a student and use it for note taking and anything else that I could possibly use my PC for at home. I personally use the M1 iPad Air with the Magic Keyboard and its light form factor makes it easier for me when I’m already taking so many things to school. I can only imagine that if MacOS came to iPad, there’d be sacrifices that students like myself would make. True, the Surface exists as another alternative that we can use, but OneNote can’t upload full textbooks for editing like Notability can. The unique usage of Apple devices by university students and others in higher education should certainly be considered in Apple’s decision making because even though I’m in grad school now, in undergrad as well, I’d be hard pressed to not find at least half of my classmates using iPads in a similar capacity to how I use them. I think if Apple maybe had something similar to Samsung’s DeX on iPad, that might be a better solution. It may not have all the capability of MacOS, but it could potentially have more desktop capabilities that can be toggled on and off more freely.
