- Happy New Year!
Can you believe it's already 2021? We can't, and we still feel like it was just yesterday that we were getting Freedom ready for her upcoming holiday travels and winter cruising plans still yet to come. Time flies when you're having fun and living on a boat, that's for SURE!
In this video, we do a few "chores" so we can leave the dock and enjoy the first days of winter at anchor in one of our newest favorite places...Port Gamble, WA. Despite Mother Nature changing course from her previously forecasted calm days, we enjoyed a day stuck on the boat before heading into town to do our annual His & Hers Christmas shopping. Be sure to subscribe and turn on your notifications so you don't miss our upcoming travels down the Hood Canal and north into the Islands to ring in the new year!
Enjoy!

Y'all got Freedom in good running order......and Mr. Sully had a good bowel movement. Life must be good!
You should put a flapper on your exhaust stack. It will stop the water from getting in and you wont have to put the cap you made on and off all the time...
You need to setup a beach anchor. Fasten the anchor to the boat with 15-20 ft of line and chain. Shackle a hundred feet of line with a snap to the front of the anchor for the beachline. put the anchor at the bow of the boat and push it out as far as you can in the water Let The Hundred-Foot beachline follow out the boat when it gets as far out as it is going to go jerk the beach line and pull the anchor into the water anchoring the boat. Tie off the beach line when you return pull in the beach line Which is attached to the front of the anchor for easy pulling and bringing the boat in.
Oh dear! I have a feeling it's a tease, but for all that is holy and boat'ary: Why not let us see the fix on the genny??
we went with 2, 12 volt battle born, 200 AH to replace our 4, 6 volt lead acid.
no more acid, no more corrosion,.
If you are still on the Canal, stop by to Broad Spit (the old submarine target location) - a large sanding peninsula back in Dabob Bay. Oyster farm in the bay - I believe it is still there.
We’ll have to check that out next trip!
Working on your Spanish...getting ready for a cruise South of the border. Shawn wedged into that engine room really shows you how the marine mechanics earn their paycheck. Nice work on the gift wrapping sequence. I have had some good luck with time-lapse on my iPhone for those kind of scenes. Great video once again!!!
You guys are so appreciated on so many levels. Thank you so much for all the work you put in behind the scenes ...ever thought of going to the cutting room floor and sharing some funny bloopers? Have a healthy and prosperous 2021...on land, there's a saying if you pray for rain don't be surprised to run into some mud... what would be the nautical equivalent to that?
Yes hopefully I can remember to save the bloopers to make something funny during 2021 😉
I want to see Shawn put the exhaust cover back on!
We’ll show during next week’s Q&A since a ton of folks have asked!
In the 80s the trawler Sundown had an emergency generator attached and running from a V-Belt to the main engine ... because we did not have enough space for another full size generator.
Your dinghy needs more air. When you stepped on the tube it totally collapsed.
I agree with your approach to electrical energy storage and recharging. Lithium and high output charging checks all the boxes. Solar is great on sailboats without generators but not trawlers. They ruin the looks of the boat in a lot of cases also.
Also, in the PNW, BC, and SE AK, solar is not as effective (esp. in winter). Their priorities in that regard seem really sensible.
Yes, they would be lucky to get 20% of rated solar capacity up there in the winter. With all the rain might be closer to 10%.
Prettiest cone head I ever saw🎊😉
2 weeks and your itching to go. Never lose that. You can tell liveaboards start to slow down when the houseplants show up. Go go go....small business yeah!!!..
I enjoy watching all of you adventures , great channel. It would be nice to see more of the daily, weekly and monthly maintenance requirements to keep such a boat seaworthy. I mean, the real deal...what does it really take to be a boat owner? Believe it or not, I'm learning a lot, being influenced! NORDHAVN!!!:)
Elizabeth, my wife and I use the married definition of "we" all the time. There's He\we ( my projects), She\we ( her projects) and We\we, (our projects)! Thanks for the great videos as a!ways. Looking forward to maybe seeing you guys this cruising season in the San Juans! Happy New year
Many happy new years to you... Thank you ..
Watta fun couple you two make and these videos are quite entertaining. Love your channel and the views you share of my home port waters. Enjoy your passages and Happy New Years...stay well stay safe!
Happy New Year! Cheers!
Solar in the PNW is only good for about two months when the sun does shines there. Great videos. Outstanding B-roll, audio is clear and I enjoy it all.
Compared to leads, you will REALLY like Lithium. I converted the trailer 18 months ago. Our system is small - 800ah battery and 5kw Victron PSW Quattro 48/5000/70 (48volt/5kw/70a charge) with a 48vdc to 13.8vdc, 40a brick. It has a NEMA 2000 converter so everything is glass bridge. Charge topping up is quick, gen time (when off grid) is greatly reduced, (maybe too short of runs on your genny, mine gets by on 3kw) (auto gen start when batts get low, etc) - best upgrade I've done in a while.
And a Happy New Year to you folks. Thanks for the inviting us along with you. A great start to the new cruising season. Well done to Mr. Sully, too!
Happy New year our friends
Good episode!
Nailed the music.
Thanks for sharing.
Life is good~
Happy New Years !
I like that Christmas shopping idea! 💡
Always enjoy your videos... music is PERFECT !!!
That is so funny.....we put the roaring fire on the TV as well....maybe it’s just in my mind, but I think it makes the boat warmer....I also use an RV in line water filter when we put water (agua) into the tank. It catches calcium sediment that clogs sink faucets, and puts filtered water into the tank....Even though city water where you are at is probably good, it just gives some added protection for only a couple of bucks.
We usually use our water softener but got lazy this time. And yes, the fire on the wall with the crackle coming through the speakers definitely makes the boat feel warmer 😉
I love the hat. It's warm. Happy New Year folks.
Happy new year guys.
Happy New Year - looking forward to following the winter cruising journey.
Thanks for the video. It was great. Thanks for all the drone footage. It is nice to see Freedom on the water. It give a great perspective.
Thanks for shopping at Port Gamble!
Very cute tradition guys! Love those pink shades by the way!
Happy New year swabs ! Hope you have a great one with not to many problems.
Having S on board reminds me of my dad who always knew how to do things like could on gensets engines
Happy and healthy New Year . Greetings from the Netherlands.
great post as usual Happy New Year and safe boating G
I enjoyed your video. I was a liveaboard for 10 years in Tacoma. I loved cruising the south sound during the winter because it was always like I was the only one around. You are lucky to have each other to cruise with because there just isn't anything better than living on a boat.
Agreed!
Happy New Year from OZ. Have a great Holiday. Kindest regards Noel
I just wanted to say that I’m new to y’all’s channel and really enjoyed it. Also wanted to compliment y’all on how clean and in order the boat is. Definitely can tell how much pride y’all take in your boat. Happy New Year😎
Lucky you've got a OCD mechanic onboard, Shawn is meticulous, Happy new year to all three of you and happy boating!
I’ll have to say thats one of the cleanest engine rooms I have ever seen👍
Can't wait to see what you two have planned for groundhogs day! Happy new year, keep doing fun things. Our plan is to be live aboards by summer and cruising from Maine to texas.
"Shipshape and FREEDOM Fashion" you both always keep the Boat in such great condition. Shawn is truly a genius, he can service the gen-set And wrap Christmas gifts. Your videos are always a joy to watch, informative, entertaining, and relaxing. Thank you for sharing. V/R Glenn L.
Don Hill Vernon B.C. Happy New Year! Your Vlogs makes my week! I use to live near the ocean in Richmond B.C. I miss the water but your Vlogs help me enjoy the feeling of being on the water again. Thank-you
thanks for another interesting episode. always impressed with shawn's technical abilities. took my bb gun apart when i was a kid and still trying to get it back together. best for the new year. JDR
Happy new year guys, from the UK.
excellent video visit to port gamble thank you for sharing happy new year Shawn Elizabeth mr sully
Happy New Year Shawn & Elizabeth & mr . Sully
You make cruising look so fun. Also, your really great at filming and editing and music selection. Great production value.
Happy New Year guys! Shawn, I would have to say I’d rather change the generator water pump than the one on my car. Much easier to get to the one on Freedom- at least it appeared so. Plus you weren’t bent over replacing it!
I went easy way with gift wrapping this year, I bought the nice boxes with the beautiful pictures on the lids and threw the gifts in them.
Bonne Année! To the 3 of you or could it be 4 ... Happy cruising in 2021.
Wow another great episode
Happy New Year guys.....and Mr Sully
Sully’s the Man!!!
Happy new year from Hamilton Scotland 🍾🍾🍾🏴
It's so nasty out there this week and we always think of you guys.....don't know how you do it. Be safe and thanks for another great video!!
Being at the dock is like heaven, but being on the hook during the days we’ve had lately isn’t great 😏
I’ve been watching your show for about two months. Yours is one of the best on UA-cam. I enjoy your scenery I was in the San Juan‘s in the early 70s on a vacation from Canada driving south always enjoyed that area. My wife and I would love to live in the Seattle area or on the San Juan‘s I don’t think it’s gonna happenBut one can wish. I love your boat and how are you guys take care of it.
Happy New Year to you all
First thing that came to mind watching Shawn change out the water pump was, "where is he going to dispose of all the old coolant?"
Modern diesel coolant is good for 3000 hours, 5000 hours with enhancer at 3000. No need to pitch it, pour it back in and reuse if not contaminated.
Shawn is a lucky guy, to have a gal that actually is a " participant " no a complainer, fun sabatager, or just plain lazy... lol take stock Shawn you are one lucky dog.
Mr Sully, the best dressed boat dog in the whole NW. Would love to see how Shawn put the stack cover back on.
Merry Xmas you two we love the channel
OMG cone heads lol. Laughing because I have the same style knit hat but mine is white 🤣. Happy New Year!
Happy New Year! Thanks to your boater Christmas recommendations, The Misses got me a DJI Mini 2! Thanks guys!
How exciting, have fun with it!
Typical PacNW winter garb - down jacket and flip flops (or bare feet!). Happy New Year!
Lucky burgers have a great new year .you are both something to look forward to in these bad times Malc Tbay RNLI
Middle of winter, bare feet, brave man!!!
Thanks for that guy’s!
Love it, all beautiful, thank you.
So jelly, great job ppl
Happy New Year, from Lilliwaup Wa.
show the water pump replacement , would be Very interesting!!!!!!
Of all the vids i just now caught that uve got family in wisc. Originally from watertown myself i now have a boat in the pnw. Lived aboard for 2 years and cannot wait to go full time. Having been all over the usa the pnw is one of the only places that really feels like home.
Minus the tweakers defecating on main street that is.
Yes! Il Terrazzo! Maybe if its summer the Rooftop patio at the Strathcona Hotel get a ton of sun.
Good call, maybe that’ll have to be our first stop next time we’re able to go to Victoria!
Hilarious Baldwin approves your Spanish.....
Love the hat and matching rain boots 👍
Merci beaucoup les Amis !
Happy New Year. Another great video. We live in Vaughn Wa.
Who’s “we”?
Me and my wife.
@@karlmueller9768 how is Mrs Mueller?
I never see you fishing, crabbing or prawning, living in the northwest I would think you would take advantage of these wonderful resources!
Love your channel. Can’t believe you haven’t had Geoducks.
I am so jealous of your generator access. I have to channel my inner contortionist to change my impeller. My engine room is so cramped.
Geoduck makes good home made clam chowder! And have you ever looked into a stainless tractor exhaust stack flapper?
That probably makes more sense!
The Navy is quite protective of their "assets" on Puget Sound. I was once heading south from Port Townsend through Portage Canal when I came upon a Trident sub stopped on the SW side of Marrowstone Is. It was over a mile from me and I was on a course heading away from them. They still sent a big, black Zodiak filled with guys dressed in black right up to me, all the while pointing a .50 caliber at me. Yikes!
The Navy is super protective of their nuclear assets. Nuke power and nuke warheads make a Trident sub a prime target when it’s on the surface.
Gorgeous Conehead !!!!!!!!!
Surprised to hear my town of Janesville mentioned!
Hi there I understand that solar panels are not the best solution for you but, what about a windmill? I had one on my sailing boat while cruising the Mediterranean. Thanks for your great videos and the time you take for the Q&A's.
Great movie, beautiful boat and gorgeous female crew what more could your ask for
Can you talk about the trade offs of land based water vs that from the water maker.
Since we don’t anchor for very long periods in the winter we pickled the water maker to avoid having to worry about its routine maintenance every week. But by Spring it’ll be back making better water than land based 👍
Shawn...... also check out mg batteries......... and have a watch of Sailing Biotrek, where Pierre talks about batteries/ systems
Not 10 rolls of wrapping paper like you keep in a land based house 😁. Like the lights are still up!
С новым годом симпатичные ребята!!!!!
What are your thoughts towards a diesel heater whether hydronic or not. Thanks
I hope you slow down and show how the hood canel bridge works that has always ben a wonder to me Houle makahiki ho
One of my permanently implanted impressions of Winter Boating was visiting my Uncle’s Bud, Doc Strong, the local Dentist in St Helens. (Columbia River) His blow boat was around the corner from my Uncle’s boat house. Went to visit him on a cold March afternoon as he was puttering about... My Uncle says “Hey Doc, when you getting out to blow some wind?” Doc Strong steps into the cabin.... reaches into the head and holds up a paint brush with a big glob of brown ice on it and says... “as soon as the POS thaws out”...I was only 7 or 8 at the time... always wonder why he had a paint brush in the head. Don’t know why I’m remembering that now... Pandemic related I guess... 😎 Great Winter Boating Vid... Sean... you carry paint brushes for emergencies?
Question. Are there alternators on the two engines to charge batteries while cruising as a backup to your main generator?
Lekker man lekker
Ok i have 2 questions.......1) what would u reccomend for SAFELY and economically parking a vehicle within reasonable access to a homeport. I was based in Everett for the 2 years and even permanent slip holders could not stay in one place more than 24hrs and crime was an issue.
2) i gave up trying to explore solo as docking, ect is quite difficult alone but a dock neighbor/buddy boat got me started in a few small tourist towns. Ie: langley and laconnor......so being new to the pnw is there a must see list of towns like this you would reccomend ?
You need a tender of Iguana Yachts... 😁
Good Morning Guys, Its a little cold here in Bay Minette, Al. I`m at work but live in Fairhope,Al. 38 this morning, but should warm up to 60 today, but cloudy so more rain, and cold. Yall don`t seem to ever be dressed for cold. While yall are out traveling, would you say you see more people traveling on Sail Yachts, or Motor Yachts? I don`t see a lot of young people on Motor Yachts, maybe its just because of the cost, fuel? so what is next for you guys, Feb-March? Take care be safe.
Did you get a razor for Christmas. Love the Chanel and posts.
