  • Catherine of Aragon was the first of Henry VIII’s 6 wives. She was a true companion and inspiration to the young king. She even rode into battle and won while heavily pregnant. But when she failed to give Henry a male heir he tried to set aside his strong-willed wife. And the results were the most dramatic and significant divorce in history.

    Catherine was so underrated. She literally won a battle WITHOUT Henry, and just because she didn't give birth to a living son (She actually bore a son but he died, he wasn't healthy), so HENRY didn't even have validation she couldn't birth sons. SHE COULD, they just didn't live to see it, because they died soon after. He didn't even help her see Mary on her deathbed, that's just savage, and Henry is terrible for that. King Henry literally insulted and violated Mary's freedom and her gender by saying "Oh, my wife was childless because I married her when she was my brother's widow" when he had a perfectly healthy daughter and forced her to sign the annulment papers. What a messed up, arcanely torturous man. I'd say that Queen Catherine was one of the best, if not THE best, of Henry's wives.

    Neither of Henry’s “healthy” sons lived past their teen years. Also The battle Katherine fought against Scotland likely caused her premature labor in that pregnancy. Henry’s parents were third cousins and Katherine’s parents were first cousins, so the inbreeding probably didn’t help. Henry himself was descended from three of Edward III’s sons and all six of his wives were descended from Henry III.

      Katherine's parents were SECOND cousins. ALL of Henry VIII's wives were descended from Edward I (Henry III's son); in fact 3 of his wives (Katherine of Aragon, Jane Seymour and Katherine Parr) were more closely related, they were descended from King Edward III (the two Katherine's via Prince John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster.)

      Anne of Cleves was descended from Beatrice of England, Edward I’s sister. The rest were directly descended from Edward I. She rode into battle while pregnant to protect her adopted country. She faced Henry's wrath until her death for the sake of her faith and her daughter's legitimacy. Thank you for this very lovely portrayal of Catherine of Aragon. A couple of notes:
    The first portrait you show of young Catherine is disputed; it is more likely one of Catherine's older sisters.
    Catherine did command the Battle of Flodden but did not actually ride into battle.
    Young Arthur's boast is not contemporary with Arthur. It was entered as testimony during the Annulment, more than 2 decades later, from biased and pressured witnesses and is therefore to be taken with a grain of salt.
    One of the main reasons that the death of Isabel was a disaster for Catherine is that Fernando's power was more than halved: he was king consort in Castile, and Isabel's death meant he lost all legal authority in Castile to Juana and Philip the Handsome. Fernando battled and schemed his way back to power, but this was not a foregone conclusion, and with Fernando king only of Aragon and parts of Italy, Catherine's stock as a bride was also much reduced.
    The portrait you show at the point of Henry preparing to propose to Catherine is actually of Juana.
    The pomegranate is also the symbol of Granada (which translates into "pomegranate") and therefore was of additional significance to Catherine.
    The wearing of yellow remains ambiguous; in Spain executioners did, at times, wear yellow, but it's worth noting that, in Spain, when someone of importance died, the colors of mourning most often referenced are white and black.
    Thank you again for this sympathetic and thoughtful portrait of Catherine.

Catherine was still one resilient & intelligent queen, regardless of her abstention from battlefields.

    Catherine of Aragon was the most beautiful, most intelligent and bravest of Henry VIII's queens. She could well have easily accepted Henry's offers, retired to houses, wealth, etc.and anonymity and quietly stepped out of the picture. Instead she openly fought and defied Henry, stayed true to herself and her religion and refused to stay silent. She also would not compromise her daughter's future. It's a great shame that despite her strong connections to other powerful European leaders they ultimately turned their backs on her. She strikes me as an incredibly strong woman of great moral character. Anne Boleyn on the other hand was a selfish, calculating, shrewish golddigger whose ambitions ultimately backfired on her. Catherine had to publically declare that she had not consummated her marriage with prince Arthur in order to keep her position while Henry was courting every woman in England and no one blinked an eye. Catherine of Aragon was definitely a wonderful queen both because of her noble status and her competences as king deputy. What happened to her is pure tragedy and unjust.

    One thing I've always wondered about, is if Catherine was so well educated, and learned to speak several languages, did she not learn to speak English while she was growing up. She was betrothed at 3 years old to the future king of England, and her parents knew she would spend her life in an English speaking country, yet they never had her tutored in English.

    • @phoenixriverton6975
      @phoenixriverton6975 2 роки тому +4

      In my opinion, England at that time wasn’t as powerful as France, Spain and Portugal. Importantly, it was Henry VII who had to rely on Spain’s power and dowry rather than Spain on England. We must keep in mind that the House of Tudors in the past wasn’t accepted by most European countries while the Trastámara, Catherine’s dynasty, was regarded as the most prestigious one in Europe. So, there wasn’t necessary much for her to learn that language.

    I love the videos about women in royal history. There’s so much that American schooling doesn’t teach us about history, and women’s history is one of those topics sadly
