Mary, Queen of Scots ascended the throne at just 6 days old. She became Queen Consort of France at 16 and was widowed at 17. After returning to Scotland she fell in lust with her handsome cousin. But the honeymoon ended abruptly when her new groom stabbed her friend 56 times in front of her. Mary probably had him strangled and then quickly married again, to her second husband’s murderer. But as they say, marry in haste, repent over the course of your 19 year imprisonment. Queen Mary then got herself entangled in a plot to overthrow her lifelong rival, Queen Elizabeth I. But instead of wearing the English crown, Mary’s head ended up on an English chopping block.

at this point, history is pretty much just a big big family feud.
Truly and God is Steve Harvey
Wonder if that's why they called it the "Feudalism" period of European history? 😉😆
Absolutely correct. WWI was a family fued writ large.
Unfortunately cuz inbreeding
Anna Costello Wisniewski Not just inbreeding.
Imagine all of your friends having the same name as you. That must have been so confusing.
I definitely agree.
Well, her own name probably never came up in that circle, since I assume they would all have been calling her 'my Queen' or 'your grace' or 'your majesty' (or some variation thereof). Mary's actual name (which she spelled Marie) would not have come up very often.
Good thing your name was not common on our days.
Jane? Wait, this can’t be right- IM JANE! You must be an impostor.
@@maryqueenofscots2511 hiya!!!
"The four Mary's" - no wonder Reign changed their names. No viewer would have been able to keep up lol
Oh.... not me watching this because of it but like damn
It was a good choice to change their names to avoid confusion, but they could have at least given them names that were actually common at the time. Give them names like Katherine, Jane, or Elizabeth, not modern names like Lola, Greer, and Kenna.
Making the names modern let’s the viewer know the names aren’t historical though. I can understand why they made that decision.
Loved it, have you seen the serpent queen?
Mary was nothing but a beautiful pawn in the game of life. She should've known better than to think she could just walk right into Scotland and nothing would've changed.
EXACTLY!!! I technically deserved both countries but it’s fine because the current queen of the UK is my descendant!
Yeah. You feel so bad for her. She never had a chance, but she sure damn tried her hardest!
I think as soon as she was sent to France, her fate was sealed. Scotland, from what I can read was a damn complicated political animal than those of France and England - there's a reason why her son, James, wanted to become King of England so badly - at least he knew that England was a bit bit easier to manage than the clusterfuck that was Scotland's political arena. Scotland requires someone astute and well versed with how all the many - MANY clans work in that country, a deft mind to handle the fickle and precarious nature of its nobility.
Unfortunately for Mary, she was raised in France, which had a different method of ruling and a different type of culture. The fact that she chose *poorly* for her second husband and was forced into a shit marriage to Bothwell scuttled whatever chances she got. What frustrates me was that some of her choices were baffling - what made her think Elizabeth would be inclined to help her when Mary spent her time in Scotland claiming she was THE ONLY LEGITIMATE HEIR TO ENGLAND and called Elizabeth was an bastard usurper many times after. I was just - gurl, GURL please think. Who were your advisors?????
@@Nixconvie I love LOVE this comment because it goes to the absolute heart of the matter. Mary is to be pitied because she was raised for one life and purpose and her mother-in-law truly was awful to her, throwing her back to Scotland, a country she didn't even know or understand. The French court had been child-centric and she'd been loved and secure all of her years there, and she relied on her charm to win her way through life. She'd have been just fine if her beloved French husband had lived.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16
"Mary was too young to rule the country"
She was too young to do anything🤣
True lol 😄😄
What do you expect? She was 6 DAYS old when she became queen of scots even me become emperor at 25 years old
She had 6 days experience.
Six DAYS of breathing, crying, eating, and being a baby or something 💀
😭😭
It always made me super sad to think that Mary's son James never trusted or even spoke to her in person. Being ripped away from your baby and imprisoned only to have him mistrust you and leave you locked up.. that's cold.
Yeah😔
Oh yes. Very sad. No doubt he was manipulated by those ruthless Protestant Scottish lords.
Agreed very toxic times
Outside of war I doubt he could’ve done anything
I mean she may or may not have killed his father too, so there’s that lol
I feel like her downfall was a combination of naïveté and rich life of becoming a queen at 6 days old and living in a French court where she had everything provided for as well as being so focused on claiming England. She returned to a country that didn’t know her and didn’t like her. But instead of focusing on them, she set her sights on England which caused her to marry Darnley to make the English claim even stronger. I think she had the potential to be a good if not great Queen had she focused on Scotland.... but her marriage essentially torpedoed any chance of English and even her own Scottish throne.
I wonder if anyone, male or female ,could have overcome the Lords of the Congregation. I often wonder, if Elizabeth and Mary’s positions were reversed, could Elizabeth have negotiated with the Lords?
Nothing but the truth here
@@gloriamontgomery6900 If she had the same life that she did before becoming Queen of England, yes, I think she could. Unlike Mary, Elizabeth got a crash course in reality, betrayal, independence and negotiation practically from birth. Mary had it rough too, but seemed to always have a cushion to support her and/or never had the opportunity to learn from her mistakes herself directly until it was too late.
Through Lord Darnley, there was a claim to the English throne. He was the son of Margret Douglas; she was the daughter of Margret Tudor Queen of Scotland. Margret Tudor was the daughter of Henry VII of England. Her marriage to Darnley didn't torpedoed any change of English or her own Scottish throne. What torpedoed her Scottish throne was the forced third marriage to the Earl of Bothwell. Mary was forced to abdicate in favor of her infant son James.
John Knox gave that poor girl hell.

Queen Mary of Scots will always be one of my favorite queens.
If you look deeper into the life of Mary, some of your assertions are inaccurate. Mary never ‘fell in love’ she was brutally raped by Bothwell and forced against her will to marry him because of his quest for power. Her half brother was primarily responsible for plotting the murder of Darnley she had no part in this. Dr Kate Williams book, is an excellent source of more accurate information about Mary and her tragic life.

Right! Mary was raped! She had to marry him after that. Can you imagine how terrible that had to be for her?!
Thanks for this information we didn't know that
I agree, alot of misleading information regarding the Tudors.
She mentioned all of this in the video, especially the part about the abduction
I deeply waited for it!! I do think she was a victim against historical rivalry...
Honestly, she should've known better than to think that her people would just instantly love and trust her the second she came back home. I mean, 14 years is a long time.
But you're right. She was used and manipulated by everyone around her. Even her own brother.
@@leeammorris1268 This was 16th century European court politics; *everybody* was trying to use & manipulate anyone else. Mary herself was not uncomplicit in such a system. I think she had a lot more agency than she's usually given credit for. She just used that agency to do stupid things that alienated her from everyone around her (mistakes which male monarchs were just as capable of repeating; her son James was just as much of an idiot as Mary was).
@@jeandehuit5385 James did not trust her. So even if he got England, I wonder if Mary won... Her son never had faith in her...
@@nazninsultanask James had no reason to want her alive: he had become King of Scots due to her deposition (& so her return would be... awkward for him to say the least. Would he be forced to step down?). James had been taught as a boy all of Mary's worst aspects (that she had murdered his father, for one, which was true).
The two had never met in person within his living memory, so James had no reason to think fondly on his mother. His lack-of-wit was due to other factors (his belief in his absolute authority despite the fact his Calvinist tutors tried to instill in him *very* early on that he had a duty to his ppl. not just to God; his belief that he was smarter than he really was; his promotion of men to government solely based on his (alleged) attraction to them; his drinking, his substantial personal debt, etc.)
I mean, his argument in Counterblast to Tabaco basically begins by saying 'yeah, the American Indians use this stuff, & *they're* savage & barbaric, so it must be dumb.' He also thought Gaelic (the 'native' language, such as it could be said, of his own ethnic group, the Scots) was a barbaric language & tried his best to suppress the speakers of Gaelic during his Scottish reign.
We're not talking about a smart, culturally attuned man here. He managed to be accidentally correct about some issues (at least he wasn't a warmonger, for ex.) & some decisions he made were understandable. But yeah, uh, no, *I'm* not going up-to-bat for his reputation...

Queen Elizabeth I: Signs Mary's death warrant
*Mary's executed*
Queen Elizabeth I: How dare they? THE DISRESPECT THE GALL THE NERVE THE AUDACITY 😤 I shall imprison them for carrying out my orders
Yeah...that wasn't Elizabeth actually being shocked though. She did that whole bit on purpose. She knew it would get used once she signed it, but she must have felt like they had her over a barrell: she had come to be convinced she had to execute Mary, but none of her old worries about the consequences had gone away. She signed it, then told her secretary not to use it specifically so that, when he did, as she knew he would, she could claim innocence and lay the whole thing at her councilors feet. Most of them were shocked and hurt as she signed the damn thing, what did she think that meant would happen? But William Cecil knew her better. In letters he tells acquaintances that he privately called her out on it.
Wasn't Mary similar to princess Diana at how she could mesmerize the people?
I guess so!
@@mikaylawilliams1651 Catherine! Your books were beautiful, you were a very talented writer!
@@stbart-uc6mo Aw thank you! Your presence always manages to make me smile:). You where truly a charming queen!
I don't think so. Mary was never very well-liked in Scotland, & she was even less liked in England (the feeling was mutual in both cases). Scotland was already Calvinist by the time she returned as an adult for her personal rule, & this set off alarm bells almost immediately; there was always the chance Mary could institute a counter-Reformation like Mary I of England did. Mary also had no direct experience of government, either.
Her reign in Scotland was mostly a non-event punctuated by stupid decisions Mary made to dig herself deeper. Anyone could have told her Darnley would have made a bad husband, but she didn't listen. When she finally learned that herself, she needed to ditch him, & murder was her chosen solution. But that still left the Queen a murder. To make matters worse, the marries one of the guys assumed to be a co-conspirator *in* said murder.
Darnley probably deserved it, but there were better & smarter ways of getting rid of him than the one she chose, & she was already on thin-ice due to being a Catholic anyway. Long story short she was run out of the kingdom & for the most part the Scots were happier for it; since the declaration of Arbroath they reserved the right to replace their king if they didn't like him, so there was nothing technically illegal going on regarding her deposition anyway.
Elizabeth executing her extralegally was a non-event in Scotland, since they already had a new monarch by then anyway, & James (being a Protestant male descended from Henry VII) was willing to let the murder of his mother slide if it meant becoming King of England (which worked out pretty well for him). Sure, *Catholics* were unhappy w/ how Mary was treated, but most Protestants in both kingdoms couldn't care less.
I think I was not as memorable and as well-liked by the people like Diana used to be. I know I have done some mistakes before, but those were incomparable to Diana's good deeds.
In reading so many comments, it amazes me at the amount of vitriol thrown in Elizabeth's direction. One needs to consider the amount of religious upheaval going on at this time, thanks in large part to Scotland's relationship with England.
Mary managed to alienate most of her most powerful lords - she was just not up to the task of pitting one against the other and keeping them guessing. Most of this can be a result of her pampered upbringing in France - Elizabeth had no such cherishing.
Then add in her poor skills at reading men and picking the absolute worst choice of a husband in Darnley.
I always felt badly for her, but she was not prepared for the world - and the reality - she found in Scotland.
It's a little dangerous to call Robert Dudley Elizabeth's "lover". Historians pretty much agree that it's highly unlikely and she'd never have been able to keep power and respect so strongly had she been up to such things (also, she was surrounded by people day and night - look what happened to Katherine Howard 🥺) It's just that people take that information and run with it and history gets muddled up! Thanks for the hard work even though it sounds pretty lame after a critique, I did enjoy it ☺️
You can be a lover or boyfriend without doing anything.

right
also...Loretta using Katherine Howard is a bad example
she was married to King Henry VIII and was executed for committing adultery
totally a different situation from a possibility of Elizabeth having lover while being single
have you heard of protestant propaganda? Many ambassadors agree that liz had lovers and wasn't a virgin. I've read documents and letters between them and also historical accounts--everyone knew she wasn't a virgin and thats why she was called a public whore in france. His rooms were connected to hers in every castle...people...think 1+1 is 2 not 3.
she wasn't a virgin and had not only Dudley but multiple lovers. She kept a close loyal circle after almost getting found out for plotting against MAry 1 in the wyatt rebellion. She was cunning and a good liar and had loyal councilers.
Alison Weir, in "Elizabeth I" makes a convincing arguement that while Dudley and Elizabeth probably did everything but, while she was young enough to be fertile it would have been too risky, but that after she reached menopause, the most likely person she fully gave herself to in intercourse was Christopher Hatton.
Long may she Reign !!!
!!
😏😏😏❤❤❤❤
When Elizabeth I said she would be heir if she married Robert Dudley was like how she named James VI heir
That was before mary decided to marry henry darnley
James the first has died. That is why all this craziness started. Elizabeth I still needed an heir/heiress
She never named an heir the English government chose James as he was her nearest relative though by the terms of Henry VIIIs will he was excluded but he was male and the next 2 closest in line were not and the sexist ministers of Elizabeth didn't want another female ruler

I noticed one error: even though I came across this as part of my academic studies years ago, I remember that it wasn't Mary who suggested to start negotiations concerning associating Mary to James's rule over Scotland. "My Heart is My Own" by Prof. John Guy (2004) is a must-read to understand the crux of Elizabethan politics shaped by the existence of Mary- Queen of Scots. The book investigated her whole story, digging deeper into archival documents (spread across 4 countries), which no historian had worked systematically since the 1890s.

One of my favourite books.
Mary QOS, raised in the frivolous French Court, was possibly the most ill-prepared Monarch of her age. When one considers Mary QOS, the word "light" comes to mind: she was light-hearted, light-minded, and certainly light in her morals. She wasn't a COMPLETE fool, however; her marriage to Darnley might very well have been romantically motivated; but there's little doubt Darnley's position in the Line of Succession played a big part in Mary's outright defiance of Elizabeth's legitimate command that she not wed Darnley.
Her life after her marriage to the "long lad" was a precipitous downhill slide until her execution many years later. In my opinion, Mary QOS deserved everything which happened to her. You dont simply covet another Queen's throne when you're too foolish to rule your own.
This. I'm so tired of everyone going on about how wonderful she was. Everything you said was spot on.
I would add though, that I think she couldn't rule because she had the disadvantages of a girl in the 1500s. No one is just magically a good ruler, you have to have the right education, training and life experiences to rule properly. If no one believes women are fit to rule on their own, no one will bother to train them yo do so. Why should you, when there will always be an uncle, a husband, a MALE to bear power in her name? It's the same pitfalls that befell Mary Tudor. They were put in positions where they had to lead and make decisions when no one had ever taught them the ins and outs of doing that, or even that they should do that. I see Elizabeth as this startlingly unique creature, who through a singular combination of education, life experience, psychology and the people she kept with, grew up to be a woman who, however inadvertently, had been trained to lead and make decisions. I don't believe that any amount of intellect and natural gifts, not even Elizabeth's and CERTAINLY not Mary's, could overcome a lifetime of "Don't worry your pretty head about it, a man will take care of it for you", then suddenly be thrust into "OK, now you need to worry and make a choice, and it better be the right one."
@@danaglabeman6919 Unsurprisingly...I couldnt agree more. I've read many historians' takes on the ability of a woman to rule well, and the concensus appears to be the same across the board: from Henry I's daughter, the Empress Matilda...the first of the "incapable" Queens Regnant, onward, I cannot find historical evidence that these female rulers received any of the traditional training so necessary for a competent Medieval monarch. They weren't even given training in military tactics. "Her generals will see to that." Gender, history has repeatedly shown, is no guarantee of ability in that quarter. I believe the Church's as well as Society's heavily misogynistic attitude toward females laid the groundwork for a rule which would at best be lackluster, at worst catastrophic.
The fate of such rulers may be summed-up in a few brief lines:
"Of all sad Words of Tongue and Pen...The saddest are these: " IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN."
I did research on my family tree and I found that me and Mary, queen of Scots are third cousins many times removed

The portrait of Marie Antoinette shown around the 1:00 timestamp has always intrigued me! When placed next to other likenesses of her as a very young woman, the details this artist managed to capture are really spectacular, and so lifelike. I have no idea who the artist is or if this is a contemporary portrait the young, soon-to-be, ill-fated queen the she actually sat for. The medium used seems unique as well--while most depictions of her are done with oil paints, this appears (to my un-trained eye) to be a watercolor...🤔🤔🤔

Queen at six days old?
Totally not problematic.
There was no minimum age as when a King/Queen dies it goes to a child. Since Mary was the only legitimate child of King James V, she was heir. She just had Regents rule for her.
@@janefelix3821
Regents ruling. Totally worked out great didn’t it 😁
@@brettlarch8050 Well, the regents did a better job than Mary herself did even *after* she came of age. So yeah, they worked out o-k.
Scotland was used to royal minority regencies at this point; James I, James II, James III, James V, Mary I, & James VI all became monarch as minors & all required a regency of some form or another.
This prevented royal centralization unlike in England, & so clan politics prevailed in Scottish politics. But decentralized governments *can* be effective in the right places, & Scotland (w/ its low population density, low agricultural yields, & comparatively poor wealth) was one of those place.
It was ironically Mary's *coming of age* that spelled political chaos, not her minority. The same could easily be said of Henry VI of England.

And that’s why monarchies suck.
Messy messy messy.
@@brettlarch8050 I agree, but I mean, you're not going to see too many representational systems in 16th century Europe. Even so, the Scottish monarch was hardly autocratic; the maximum amount of control Mary was pretty minimal compared to the governments of today (but still extensive compared to a commoner, of her time or any others).
Even then, we can still assess the states(wo)men in question for their ability & what they managed to accomplish. Neither Edward Longshanks nor Oliver Cromwell came to power democratically, but I can still blame Longshanks for exiling the Jews & I can still give Cromwell some credit for inviting the Jews back to England.

Your videos always brighten my day!
So true!
I love your videos so much I binge them when I'm doing hw or am procrastinating doing my homework. Really depends on my mood
I can't understand why they didn't use an experienced executioner.
Exactly
My goodness that is one brutal execution
So....her son...who refused to accept her abdication from any claim to the Scottish throne...Which would have possibly given Mary her freedom...laid her body to rest next to Elizabeth who also would not accept the denouncement of any of Marys' claim to the throne of England in exchange for Mary's freedom...So...Mary forever lays entombed next to Elizabeth who kept Mary prisoner for almost 20 years and had Mary beheaded.......What a crappy son.
I’m loving the new video and title!
A legal monarch executing another legal monarch was not unprecedented. In 1268 the King of Sicily, Charles of Anjou, had Conradin, King of Jerusalem and rightful King of Sicily executed. Whether it was legal or not is any historians guess.
It wasn't legal then either. I don't think Elizabeth's execution of Mary was any *more* legal (since Mary wasn't Elizabeth's subject & thus English law did not apply to her). However, at least in that case, Scotland itself was being ruled by James VI, so it was not as if Scotland's *actual* monarch was being executed, just a prior monarch who had been deposed.
James himself let it happened, as he was eager to stay in Elizabeth's good-graces in order to possibly become her successor one-day. Worked well for him, I guess...
@@jeandehuit5385 There's legal and the there's practical. Was Mary right that Elizabeth had no "right" to touch her, about being an anointed queen and not a subject? Absolutely. Practically, if you claim someone else's throne, come uninvited into their country asking for help, then spend a few decades plotting their death, trying to forment rebellion, asking other monarchs to invade, telling anyone who will listen that you're the true ruler, are you going to get executed? Ummm....yeah. In that situation, thinking "I'm a fellow queen, it's not legal for you to touch me" was going to protect her was so short-sighted as to border on idiocy. And this is the person so eager to take control of an enormously complex political situation from a woman who had successfully walked that tightrope for 25 years.
Who is better?
Me or Mary?
Mary, you are not very nice. Mary has always been very kind to those in the comments. I'm sorry, Elizabeth.
You're my dear daughter, so ofcourse I am going to say you, but Mary wasn't bad herself
You!
Mary made some ruthless descisions in her life so ill say.... You!
I think you are better
In all honestly, had Elizabeth not kept her locked up, albeit in castles, I don’t think Mary would have enrolled in those plots on her life. After nearly 20 years locked up, I would have been involved in some shady business too, were I her. Also she was right that, as a foreign queen, she couldn’t commit treason, for she was never an English subject. Even after being deposed as queen, she was not an english subject.
I feel sorry for her, she should have just stayed in France.
@@DarthDread-oh2ne ikr agree, but sadly, after Francis’ death (and being a Queen regnant) there wasn’t much else she could do
I feel like most people forget what Mary did to lady Jane Grey the 9 day queen ( I love lady Jane Grey)
What did she do
That was a different Mary
Wrong Mary
My Mother In Law finally got a video :D!!
I'm sorry if I laughed at the part where her head fell off, revealing a wig 😭
I'm going to hell, aren't I...
I guess you could say that she wasn’t thinking a-head.
@@gloriamontgomery6900 both y’all dancing in hrll
King James VI was too cruel towards his mother. He should have gained her freedom and taken her to Scotland respectfully. Instead he signed a treaty with Elizabeth. Elizabeth must have pardoned her. A strong queen was beheaded brutally. She would have died eventually due to health issues.
if he saved her she would live in captivity for the rest of her life
James had no reason to do it. He'd been told horror stories about his mother for years (some of which were true, some of which were false, & some of which were based on misleading premises). Even if he were inclined to think well of her in spite of that, he had 2 other very good reasons for letting sleeping dogs lie:
1) what would he do in the improbably event Mary were ever let free in Scotland? IIRC Mary insisted her abdication had been coerced; would she truly expect her son to 'step down' & allow her to rule for a second time until her natural death? James found this idea--even the *possibility* of this idea unacceptable. He'd been the king since he was a baby. He wasn't about to give that up.
2) James wanted to get in good with Elizabeth & lock down that English succession (mainly in the mistaken belief that the (in all actuality empty) English treasury could help pay off his substantial debts). He flattered her at every opportunity, & if throwing his own mother under the bus was what it took to become King of England, then by gum he was going to do it.
Now, Elizabeth was predisposed to James anyway (he was a Protestant King; not only would Elizabeth refuse to let herself be succeeded by anything other than a firm Protestant, but she had bought into Richard II's fiction about the special status of royalty. Her other cousins were descendants of kings; her cousin James *was* a king, Henry VIII's succession act be damned), so maybe James could have gotten away w/ rocking the boat a little. But he didn't feel like he could take that chance.
The netfilx series Reign, told a whole different story. Mary and Francis was together longer in the series.
Mary I am sorry for chopping your head off, we can always glue back together. Make sure to have the support of your people.
Please do Margaret Of Scotland
She covered her in Henry VIII's sisters.
how the fuck did people have lives like this😭 here i am crying that my sims crashed like jesus
And that's why the quote "I was born in the wrong time" {referring to the tudor era} is just absurd
Such a sad and unfortunate story. She was a political pawn since birth.
I love all your videos I'm always the first one to watch I think sometime I love you guys
Watched Reign on Netflix.
Reign
Queen Mary is my 11th generation great grandmother. Her grandson King James II had an illegitimate daughter named Katherine who married a Sheffield. The Sheffield son, Edward cousin of Bonnie prince Charles, made his way to America through the Virginia company.
James II was her great grandson
