Interesting how men would curse the women for not being able to bare a son, when its actually the men’s sperm carrying the chromosome that decides the gender of the baby
And such hypocrisy to claim such faith and devotion to the will of their Christian god along with claiming god himself says the man is higher than the woman but yet it’s the woman’s fault ? And also if women had a choice for a male or female child I’m pretty sure the princess or queen would rather have a male duh. I would think god is punishing me with no heir not my wife even if she was unfaithful or has not been living right I would still see god doing it not her or me
Nice to copy comments and all the idiots liking it. Trying to be 'feminists' hahah. But the truth is..the problem lied in miscarriages and in adultery. Henry had a few sons, they all died as babies. But if this give your some spice girl power..,then go ahead take it. hahahah
I dont think that actually true. he ruled England very well, and he certainly wasn't hated like Bloody Mary. Its probably just a popular way to think of things now, when men are hated anyhow. @@poiyreadghmncxadho657 Did u mean that Anne would have no choice but to accept the King's pursue? Well then I agree! I do give that benefit of doubt to her, but I still dislike her cuz she celebrated someone's death..who did no harm to her. Yeah that's just as bad as murder for me. I don't think the celebration would be sth she has absolutely no control over, especially when it's the time King was obsessed with her. Anyway she is still a homewrecker in my opinion. Btw I've watched about her story after the comment above, now I know a bit more about her.
Henry was a such hypocrite. If he thinks he marriage to Catherine was incest because she’s Arthur’s widow, then his marriage to Anne was basically the same thing because her older sister, Mary Boleyn, was his former mistress.
Not really. The incest argument came from the fact that HIS brother was first married to his wife, which made the latter his sister-in-law. Having Mary Boleyn as his former mistress didn't make Anne his in-law. Thus, no "incest".
I loved how Henry used the Bible to justify invest when the Bible states "if a man's brother does and they are childless and he married his brothers widow but 'spilled his seed' then he is put to death in the eyes of God for failing to produce an heir on his brother's behalf"
@USCAN14 I love historical-fiction. The Other Boleyn Girl (I first read it in 2010/2011) is very entertaining & imaginative but it plays largely on the vilification of Anne. However, you're right. Mary was older. We just don't know exactly how much so.
@USCAN14 Exactly. The trend continued for Mary & Elizabeth. I'm also obsessed with the Tudors (And Jane Grey's story makes me cry)! Particularly, Anne. I love the Anne Boleyn: A New Life of England's Tragic Queen because it's an honest & captivating biography of Anne. 😍💔 And it provides real information about Mary (her sister), Mary & Elizabeth. I read it in 2013/2014.
He actually did have to seek a dispensation for the marriage to Anne because of his relationship with her sister Mary. I highly recommend the Alison Weir biography for more details on this. The mental gymnastics this man performed were dizzying!

@@paige-vu3ot she didn't. The myth of "Bloody Mary" was a collection fabricated stories based on the accounts of John Foxe - a protestant enemy of Mary who was AWAY from England during her reign. The only mistake Mary committed is dying TOO EARLY that her enemies outlived her. Did she burn people? Yes, but those people were mostly protestants who want her get killed and dethroned in the first place. As a matter of fact, she promised religious tolerance when she ascended to the throne, but in her short 5 year reign, she had to defeat 2 large scale protestant rebellions. She wasn't an angel or saint but she is far from the evil that English propaganda paints her.
It's a shame that Mary occupies a dark place in history. Could she have been seen in a more positive light if she lived longer? Maybe. One thing is for sure, Mary and Elizabeth have laid the foundations of modern England and Britain.

What's interesting is that Mary held many grudges against many people surrounding her father for destroying her life, but not against her father directly. In truth, he was the one solely responsible for her misery, yet he was the only one she seemed to hold no grudge against.
It could mean a death penalty to even think ill of the King. She couldn't allow her thinking to go there. At the very least, you could never speak of it.

What Philip did, marrying Mary, then trying to get Elizabeth to marry him. Before Mary was dead had to be the final heartbreak for Mary. Honestly, I can understand Mary's anger at this. She should have been angry at Philip not Elizabeth.
She was angry at Elizabeth because this was just another time, like all others, where Elizabeth got something that was intended for and should have been Mary’s.
@@ChrisW228 but the point is that it wasn't Elizabeth's fault, it was even Mary's fault for faking the pregnancy, I mean, that's what her reign was based on and she knew it and decided to do that? I think both Mary and Elizabeth were victims of mistreatment by men but in different ways, Elizabeth was abused by seymore and Mary was basically disowned by her father Elizabeth was too but not as harshly as Mary
No, Elizabeth had it worse. She was a little child when Henry declared her illegitimate, she never got to experience being his little girl like Mary did.

It's a bummer (but understandable) that history teachers in k-12 have to hit the "basics" on just a small amount of history! They really do have so much to cover in such a short amount of time not to mention what they cover has to be appropriate for the age they teach (which in this case, typically taught to older students- limiting the time and details even more about Tudor history!) It was nice when I was finally in college and the history classes I took were more detailed for more specific time frames to go into more depth!
In my opinion, Mary had actually been Elizabeth's teacher in the arts of statecraft and queenship. Not directly, perhaps, but still indirectly. She taught Elizabeth what a Queen must and must not do, and Elizabeth in turn had learned her lessons well. As someone who believes in an afterlife, I honestly hope that, in that other world, these two sisters had resolved their differences, and come to a true complete reconciliation. After all, at the end of the day, they are sisters, and have so much in common.
elizabeth owed EVERYTHING to mary, seeing as how she not only spared her life but also put down all the groundwork for her rule. i highly doubt that elizabeth would have fared so well if she had to start everything from scratch rather then just boast herself up like she did.
@@JT5555 well, I think that's overstating everything. Elizabeth was highly intelligent and emotionally stable. Apparently, Elizabeth had to overcome the terrible public opinion of female rulers after Mary's reign. I'm not sure how you think that Mary paved the way....
I'm guessing you've never heard of bloody mary which the name originates from her for a very specific reason. She was a tyrant. The only way she paved was to show Elizabeth what kind of queen not to be.
This illustrates the danger of theocratic monarchies and explains why the Amerrican colonies revolted and created a democracy free of religious bias. The co,onions had suffered under monarchies and knew they were undesirable. Religion had interfered in governmental processes for too long and was also discarded .the colonists knew what didn't work and developed a democracy ruled through e,lectionary. They wanted no inherited leaders.
Honestly it's down to Mary and the parade of stepmothers. Mary showed Elizabeth what not to do. Mary's foreign marriage was incredibly unpopular, which caused all manner of problems for her. Further, her insistence on changing the state religion caused all matter of contention. The parade of stepmothers further showed Elizabeth what could happen if she married PERIOD. She chose to be master of her own fate rather than subjugating herself to any man and risking her life in childbirth.
It is also worth mentioning that Mary's maternal grandmother was a queen in her own right, and having been raised by Catherine, she was sure to have heard a lot about it and had that normalized since a young age. She already had reigning queen's blood.
Yes, that was the famous Queen Isabella of Spain of Ferdinand and Isabella fame who supported christopher Columbus. She with her husband finally drove the moors from Spain. However, any jews and moors still in Spain had to convert to the Catholic Church or face imprisionment or death. I think the english people WOULD have been happy if Mary had married one of her english cousins, who also had a claim to the throne, not Phillip. Lady Jane Grey and her husband Guilford Dudley, were locked up in the tower. Now Mary didn't as I understand, really want to execute Lady Jane Grey, but then her father got stupid and joined Wyatt's rebellion So he too, along with his daughter lost her head.Elizabeth 1 didn't trust Jane's sisters, Catherine and Mary. And that's another story.
I still argue the point that Henry did not fall in love with Anne. He fell in "lust," especially since she successfully held him at bay for a number of years.
Henry figured that out too...and even concluded it was her witchcraft ( and may have been) why do you think he was so furious? Am waiting for Prince Harry to wake up from HIS lust spell....he will be furious too - but I doubt he will behead his villain.
The parallels between Mary and Elizabeth are interesting, but some of the historical facts are questionable. For instance, Mary had a second phantom pregnancy which wasn't mentioned and Elizabeth's secretary and right hand man was William Cecil, not Robert. Robert was William's son who replaced his father after his death many years later. A strange mistake to have made.
Was about to make a post on that, it was definitely WILLIAM Cecil that was Elizabeth's right hand man at the beginning of her reign. Such a basic mistake is shocking 😶
I love how it's very rarely mentioned that Jane died of childbed fever after their son was born. She gives him the one thing he's always wanted and doesn't get glorified for it. It's a damn shame.
Henry VIII is buried next to Jane Seymour... Jane is the wife he is portrayed in the famous painting with... She was the only wife Henry never said a bad word about. Also pure random chance governed the sex of her child.. why should she be glorified for that?
@@reneesaunders674 well in those times, nobody understood the science in it. @@steveb1164 Why do you say that? Queen Mary could have easily had Elizabeth killed if she wanted, yet she didn’t do so. And regarding your first comment… It was a matter of principle! Catherine and Henry were married for so long, and their daughter Mary was born legitimately. I can relate because my mother is Catholic as well, yet she divorced my father when I was a young teenager… When the church told her that she would not be able to receive communion anymore because of the divorce, she was about to take them up on their suggestion that she get the marriage “annulled,“ involving her giving them a ton of money, which was the church’s way of saying that her marriage to my father was never legitimate/never happened, and thus my brother and I were born illegitimately “out of wedlock!“ She was about to pay a good $600 at least, if memory serves me right, to declare my brother and I as bastard children! All just so that she could receive a tiny piece of bread every Sunday from the priest. 🙄 I was insulted by her even considering this as a valid option, and told her as such. She decided to not go through with it after I expressed my feelings, and decided to go to a Baptist church for many years after that instead. But her heart never left the Catholic Church, as she told me during that period of time that she wanted to be buried with the Catholic rights of sacraments… And sure enough, some years later she began going back to the Catholic church. I have a feeling that she ignored the whole “you can’t get communion anymore if you are divorced” at that point, and kept the divorce to herself so that she could receive it again. I never asked her about it though as I am an atheist and we butt heads about religion. She raised me as Catholic, but I really did not like the church from a very young age and fought with her to go to my best friend’s Baptist church with my friend’s family when I was in the third grade. I ended up leaving the church when I was 19 years old though, and became agnostic in my 20s, and then atheist in my early 30s. When my parents were married, my father would also go to Catholic church with us, but he obviously never liked it either, because he never bothered to get baptized (so he never went up to receive communion either). After he got remarried, he began going to a Protestant church as well with his new wife, and got super into it.
Actually, considering that his divorce from Catherine led to the Reformation and the Church of England and Anglicanism still stands to this day, I would argue that some of his legacy is still present very much to this day. Also, while the Royal Navy started building its success during Elizabeth I's reign, it was during Henry's reign that it emerged and gained the potential that it had. Sure, Henry was a horrible person (although it's also argued that he was quite pleasant until he fell off his horse in a jousting accident and suffered frontal lobe damage) but you can not objectively say that his legacy is destroyed when two of the things that England (and the UK) are identified with are inherited from him.
I wonder what Henry’s reaction was when God said “I didn’t give you a son for a reason, your daughters will become great queens.” After he died, I bet he face palmed so hard when he watched his daughters’ reigns. Lol
I really wish heaven and hell doesn't exist, but doesn't even know if they're real or not. Confused tho even im catholic I still don't believe but I'm scared doing sin ofc.
I do feel bad for Anne Boleyn, but she was also a ruthless social climber and I feel way worse for Catherine, she did nothing wrong and had her daughter stolen and was humiliated for years
Once the King had made his interest known in her, no one else would and could compete anymore. She was trapped as a mistress at that point - no one else would touch her at this point so why not go for broke?
I wish they would have walked through Elizabeth’s rule like they did Mary’s, rather than just say “then she became queen and did xyz.... time to wrap it up!”
Doris Slider they didn’t poison her. That idea comes from Catherine getting sick after drinking Welsh ale but the poison theory has no basis in reality. When she died, they found a black mass on her heart.
I've seen a LOT of Tudor documentaries, but the image of Elizabeth and Mary riding in to London together, is never one I've heard or seen before. *Continues watching, riveted*
That event was the culmination of Elizabeth's brilliance. She was able to avoid any verifiable plots. She used the Jane Grey conflict to convince Mary of her loyalty. It also solidified the position as the rightful successor to the Mary. Especially since Anne Boleyn was so unpopular.
I feel for both Mary and Elizabeth. They both had issues because of Henry. Mary was older and understood more that was going on when she was thrown to the side. And Elizabeth never got to know her mother, since she was so young. They both did what they were raised to do, regardless of how bad it may have been. Mary should have been married and things could have been better for her had Henry allowed for her to do so.
I watched the tv drama The Tudor, which largely focuses on Henry's life & rule more than the girls, I had thought that the writers took artistic liberty to make the story more interesting but it seems they had no need. Sometimes truth really is stranger than fiction.
Agreed. I liked The Tudors show, and I was entertained by it, but I liked how even the poetically licensed story was told in such a way to entertain an audience that wouldn't care about history otherwise.

We must reme be how little women were respected in this period. People truly believed that women determined the child's gender. The English had ax preference for males which was secured through its laws of progenitor. My ancestor was the disinherited second son who was given a one way ticket to America. Public education (especially in USA) was not designed to help people learn to think....and today, private education often falls short as well. Yes, the occasional well thought out historical efforts are precious and, regretfully, rare.
I think the cruelty Henry VIII demonstrated towards his first wife, a Spanish Princess, Catherine of Aragon, was especially on display when him and his Queen Anne Boleyn dressed in yellow and celebrated at court the death of Queen Catherine.
Henry ended up with the Strong heirs he wanted just not the gender he wished for. Even with all the crap that happened during his reign I do believe he loved all his children fiercely, I also believe Mary came to adore Elizabeth in their younger years and Vice Versa. So many people say how much Mary hated her younger sister but I believe they have that thought due to Mary having Elizabeth arrested and jailed. She was heavily counciled to sign Elizabeth's death warrant but didn't. I truly believe it wasn't just because she was her heir I believe it was because she loved sister very much. While she was forced to be one of Elizabeth's Lady's in waiting I believe to her it went from a humiliating punishment to a joyful relationship. Elizabeth I believe learned alot and inherited alot from her sister as well as her parents. The way she carried herself was much more reminicent of Mary rather then her parents. She got everything she needed to be a great Monarch from her mother, father and her sister Mary.
Mary was also kind to Elizabeth when Elizabeth lost her status as a child. Mary had a conscience to protect Elizabeth (not signing her execution) while Elizabeth could do that to Mary Queen of Scots.
Oh dang it. I _JUST_ wrote something similar in a thread one or two threads above yours lol. Didn’t see your comment until afterwards. P.S. I don’t know if this accurately depicted historical reality or not, but in an excellent movie about Queen Elizabeth, Elizabeth begrudgingly signed Mary Queen of Scots execution warrant, after the relentless urging and nagging of her advisors to do so (it took her a long time to work up the nerve to sign the warrant) - but then immediately after she hands the signed warrant to an advisor or servant of hers, she tells him to _NOT_ hand it over to the full group of advisors until/if she gives him permission to. She said she wanted to think on it more, at least for the night...She knew that she’d be inviting war on the shores of England if Mary Queen of Scots were to be executed, and Elizabeth was no war monger)... So she tells this advisor/servant to pretend as if she never signed it whilst he waits to hear back from her (for him to learn from her whether or not to pass it on and make the order for execution final, or to shred the document up and allow Mary Queen of Scots to live). This advisor/servant _DEFIED_ Elizabeth’s order, as he took it upon himself to make the decision for her, passing on the document to the group of advisors to force the execution to happen asap. Again, this was from a movie, so it would be cool to research this one day to see if the movie script writers were being accurate with how things really went down, or if it was only written to be dramatic. Anyone know?
Mary did not 'hate' Elizabeth!? She was suspicious....and could you blame her?? It's painful that she was dealt such hard cards in life and in death, she has been so misrepresented. Thank God that harsh account is being revised.
Men who are ignoble fall into a succubus persona. Women ashamed of humility trade heavenly grace for shoddier power. The identities of the genders, when confused, do not bear good fruit that lasts.
It is understood Sansa's character is partially based on Elizabeth I. Abused and mistreated as a child but ends up becoming a Queen hopefully ushering a new era like Elizabeth.
Fun Fact!!! Before Prince Philip of Spain married Mary, there was a Belgian Nobleman's daughter who was in love with Philip and wished to marry him. However, her stepmother and father forbid it (due to political influence). And the young girl died shortly after, of suspected poisoning. The rumor was her "evil" stepmother had done the girl in. The girls name was Margaret Von Waldeck. And she is believed to be the real life inspiration for The Snow White fairytale.
28:00 I am stunned by the exquisite amount of detail on this painting. That must’ve taken artist so long to be so intricate… I can imagine him thinking “do you really want to wear this outfit for this sitting, sir??”
Mary would have been a great Queen if King Henry would have let her marry when she was younger if he would have let her marry who she wanted to marry then everything would have been fine
But then she'd have been in another country likely married off young, and England might have been rolled into whatever country she had married into the dynasty of.....Spain, Germany, Austria?
@@cheriefrench6956 not Necessarily they already had A strong alliance with Spain/ Portugal because of not only her mother but I believe one of the aunts on henry side was married into The Portuguese court. She probably would've even taken her mother with her to spain. She probably would've had babies her first son would be heir to the English thrown raised in England. Or she wouldve even understood a little more that her father needed an heir so she wouldnt have put up such a fight because she her mother was old and couldnt have children anymore. Mary queen of Scotts wouldve been next for the english thrown anyway we know that she had a son so he would've been 👑.
This story just shows how plans you make may differ from real thing. Henry wanted son so Tudors would lead on. In the end Elisabeth ended it by no having married. Henry wanted son but his daughters ended up in lead. Non of children have their own children. And in a big picture the protestand faith was better choise anyway- at least people who had to sit through church every sunday could understand what was said.
At about 20 minutes in, it was said Mary and Edward had an explosive fight over religion during Christmas. Is there a place where I could read about this incident or learn more about it?
it's such an ridiculous amount of ads that for the first time I am actually seriously considering getting adblocker before watching another video from this channel
Mary didn't "hate" her sister Elizabeth. The catholic/protestant divide provided immense strain but I don't believe there is evidence to say she "hated" her.
in things Elisabeth hated Mary more. Given the fact that she visited her Brother and Elisabeth when they were children. they were given the same tutor and education meaning they where in the same place. and we do remember her as Bloody Mary, victors cast shadows to those they hate. and yet Elisabeth killed more people.
I just love watching your shows, they are just done so well. This particular edition is of even greater personal interest. I found out that Thomas Cranmer was my 15th or 16th grandfather. Henry goes through 6 women, supposedly searching for someone to give him a son- but we really know he was after young umm women- and it was thought that women would rule by emotion.... and men rule by their king stick 😒
6 is rather conservative for any powerful man....yikes, look at the historical Sheiks and their harems....am sure there was quite a bit of beheading there and poisonings - but they were not even pretending to live Gospel values....
Also, he already had a son by a lady in waiting (?) Before he tried going for Anne, if only he would've spent more time trying to get that kid into succession somehow instead of trying to conquer France while boinking the next girl in line
@@greyblueme9711 that son was with Mary Boleyn, Anne’s sister. I forget why Henry didn’t make him successor. Probably a mix of thing... illegitimate, Mary fought against it, he wanted Anne who was more worldly and played him.
@@ChrisW228 Mary Boleyn's son was Henry Carey. It's possible he was the King's son but it's not certain, Mary was married when he was conceived and some sources state that her relationship with Henry VIII had already ended. Henry VIII's first illegitimate son and the only one he recognized and considered as a possible heir was Henry FitzRoy, Elizabeth Blount's son. He died in 1536, aged 17.
Elizabeth was protestant.. It was assumed that instead of Elizabeth a Protestant, Northumberland jumped to his choice Lady Jane whom Northumberland could control. Mary was raised by a foreign mother, and never fully understood that England and it's subjects have always considered themselves separate from Europe. European monarch's could burn their subjects and persecute their subjects with no consequences. But England had the Magna Carta. English men considered themselves unequaled in their freedom. England had a parliament. the English did not wish to be ruled by a foreign ruler, be he a monarch or a pope. Mary never fully understood that, and as much as the people of England loved her as Henry's child, they still perceived her as part foreigner.
That's true now but not really at that time. Otherwise Mary wouldn't have gathered so much people around her to depose Lady Grey. Not only that, English people accepted another foreigner later (Scottish James Stuart) and many decades later the husband of Mary II (Dutch William of Orange) and later the Hannover (German). Of course all of them were somehow related but not strongly as Mary as she was a King's English child not a foreigner cousin or nephew/niece.
@@sabi2121 .. Oh you are so very right! While Catherine was living the English saw her as their rightful queen and Mary as their true heir (after Edward). When Mary came to the throne the English were truly happy. But historically countries did not like women monarchs and anytime they did anything wrong, everyone was quick to assign blame through the maternal line. Elizabeth was the bastard daughter of a Protestant Witch and Mary the daughter of a Catholic Foreigner.... When Mary became queen, she promptly made it known that she was more Spanish Catholic than English Protestant. They didn't nickname her "Bloody Mary" out of love.
ohoyohmrd interesting! I wonder though if the nickname Bloody Mary came after the fact and not during her reign. Another example of how women were demonized. I would have to look into it. I believe that at the time of Queen Anne's execution, there is no record of her being accused of being a witch. That came later.. It's all so fascinating. Edit: check out reading the past and Claire of the Tudor society here on youtube. They are great
@@guaycura Everything you have written is spot on. Maybe we are coming at it from different directions with the same result. Historically the issue for the English is religion first, legitimate lineage is second. Later even though James was the direct descendant of Henry VII he would not have been accepted as a Catholic. To ensure acceptance James was raised protestant. Your reference to James Stuart, Mary and William, and the Hanover's also match with my observation. Historically the English will always choose a barely royal protestant over a direct line Catholic. Catholics
Katherine of Aragon had red hair. A lot of her portraits were done after she was long gone. Everyone assumes because she's Spaniard, she must look Italian. It's one of my biggest pet peeves when people talk about her then show a portrait that's supposed to be of her and it's jet black hair with a unibrow.
You are right, Catalina de Aragón had red hair, blue eyes and was the most beautiful of all Henry VIII "wifes", whilst he was really ugly, very overweight and cruel.
Craziest Plot Twist in History! Henry craved for a son, not wanting his daughters and his son soon died and one of his daughters ruled the kingdom. That's just crazy!
You would think by the second decade of the 21st century, that they would give an accurate report of Queen Mary. I am so sick of her being called "Bloody Mary". She was certainly no worse than Elizabeth 1. Elizabeth killed many many people herself. Poor Mary had a horrible and tragic life. And it's little wonder she acted the way she did. Yes, that's no excuse. But the way Henry treated her and her mother was horrific! And to add insult to injury, she was not given the dignity to even be buried in a Catholic Church. Or now even reinterred in Westminster Cathedral. The only way to have the story properly told, is by a non-english program or Professor. The English have an inbred hate for Mary. And it exists to this day. Totally unfair and factually wrong.
Mary doesn't deserve to be recognized for anything, they both killed, justice is not taking away the title of "bloody" or praising her, justice is giving her sister the same title but nothing else, they were the same in everything
Both of them were evil but Mary was more evil TBH she messed up England's economy by the end of her reign and burned so many protestants during 300 years meanwhile Elizabeth burned 600 during a 45 year reign and her reign was known as the golden age. If Mary got reigb for 45 years imagine how many kills she would've had probably more than her father Henry VIII
Well I guess there was a reason they called her Bloody Mary. And she imprisoned Elizabeth on baseless suspicions of a plot. I don't remember Mary doing anything for the people.
@@glendabarton45barton48 Mary would have brought the Inquisition to England, if she could. If she had lived longer, she probably would have succeeded. She also burned Protestants because they wouldn't convert or stop preaching. Elizabeth didn't burn Catholics willy-nilly. Yes, she executed some, but only if they actively conspired against her, threatened her life, or raised an army against her.
she can blame her Mother for her fate. if they had followed the tenets of their religion they would never have married their cousins which BOTH Mary and her Mother and her Grandmother did. I have ZERO sympathy for anyone that thinks its acceptable to burn people who disagree with your religion and insist on marrying people you share multiple ancestors with.
when it comes to queens of england everyones talking about mary and elizabeth but no one talks about Jane Grey (who was queen for only 9 days before Mary took the throne), everyone seems to forget her.
Don't forget Mathilda who almost got there four centuries earlier and everybody forgets she was supposed to be the first Queen of England. I recently watched "The She-Wolves of England" where Jane Grey gets discussed too.
My favorite part of the story of King Henry was how we asked one woman if she would marry him and she said no my neck is not strong enough to marry you
That type of coincidence happens to me quite often! It's a little bit spooky at times (for me anyway)! I've also been very curious about royalty, whom is related to who, their family tree, if you will! Everybody, please stay safe!
And Mary blamed poor Elizabeth for all the mean things that Elizabeth's mother, Anne Boleyn, did to her, even though Elizabeth was only a baby and therefore would have had no idea what was going on!
Henry and Catherine actually did have a son, their first child was a son but after 50 days he ended up passing away which devastated his parents, he had been in a different castle with a bunch of wet nurses which makes me think that there could have been foul play with his death
@@meginmdYeah, foul play is not necessary in the death of a baby back then. Babes are very vulnerable and they didn’t understand how to keep them alive and healthy.
Hilariously from a biology point of few Henry was at fault for his lack of male heirs, as a women's egg can only give an X chromosome, and a man can give either a Y or an X chromosome. There for the biological sex of a child is determined by the mans contribution to the child.
Even though their reign (Elisabeth and Mary) wasn't of such a long duration, I can't help but be so happy that they went through all that and fought to show that women aren't less than men, that we are just as capable (and cruel, eg. Bloody Mary).
Those of us who have seen the movie Elizabeth are very well familiar with the Protestant-killing monster Queen Mary but, after watching this, you can't help but feel sympathetic towards her after knowing what her childhood was like, although being unable to forgive her for those killings. Thank you for uploading these kinds of videos & giving us both sides of her story.
They were killing catholics first. All they did was flip the table. Religion is power and the real victims were the poor people trying to figure out what to believe
Ann did give Henry a child that ruled England so well. Henry was not dumb if he would have opened his eyes he would have seen how remarkable Elizabeth was.
*Lady Jane Grey, Back🔥StaBBed Her Husband, & did NOT CROWN HIM KING, as PLanned!!!* *This Caused Lady Jane, to loose🔥SuPPort & Her HEAD ( & his too )!!!!*
The way you weave together the complexities of Mary and Elizabeth's relationship is absolutely captivating! I felt like I was right there in Tudor England
I wonder what would of happened if Mary decided to bring in a fake baby. Like she told someone to take someone elses newborn and pretend it was hers. Theres plenty of reasons why she didn't do this I assume, religious reasons or something maybe? But it's an interesting thought.
So, in large part, it's probably because it would have been seen as a "pollution" of the royal bloodline and, therefore, abhorrent to Mary, or, at the very least, her religious conscious couldn't stomach lying to both her people and husband. It would have been reasonably hard to do too, simply because of all the attendants around a royal birth for just this sort of reason---from midwifes, to ladies in waiting, and physicians. Still, I won't lie, this sounds like an awesome alternate history idea to try to make happen.
Back then, many, many people watched/ witnessed the births to make sure nothing like that happened. There was something like 200 people there when Marie Antoinette gave birth.
“Cursed” could also be explained via whoever he was related to murdered the Princes in the Tower. I’m not suggesting anyone actually practiced magic upon Henry’s family like The White Queen novel series suggests. “Cursed” in this context is the Christian European equivalent to karma.
Eh, he's more closely related to the Princes themselves (his uncles) than the person who probably had them murdered (his mother's uncle aka his great-uncle)
There's also a multitude of theories that Henry's jousting accident when he was married to Anne Boleyn caused a concussion, and that's why his personality changed so drastically
tbh i feel so bad for Mary, it wasn't her fault the fact that king Henry just decided to throw her away just because she was sick, and only favored Elizabeth a bit more is so sad, if i was Mary i would have done the same thing
The probable reason why Henry the 8th was so desperate for a son may have been the horrible memories of the war of the roses. A son would be a focal point around whom insurrection could be quickly English. What is interesting is the number of Queens position of principal monarch. Catherine de Medici and Mary Queen of Scots, are two of the best-known of that era. I think it would prove interesting if a video could be produced to answer this possibility.
12:12, and of course that's Elizabeth I as a preteen, though the sound bites make it seem like this is supposed to be a young Mary I (who would have been in her late twenties and well beyond tending to Elizabeth).
It's definitely ironic if not somehow funny in a sinister way that he stepped on so many people and beheaded two of his wives just so he could move onto the next in the hopes that one of them would eventually give him the son he so much desired as an heir, and yet he had *two* daughters ascend to the throne and the Tudor dynasty died with Elizabeth. Fun fact: British children's TV series called "Horrible Histories" covers historical events and facts in a fun way to make history more attractive to children and they often did songs for that. They have a song called "The Monarch Song" in which they present all of the English monarchs that have been since William I to Elizabeth II and Elizabeth I's introduction is "I'm Liz the first, I had no kids, so Tudors RIP". I find that very funny.
Elizabeth l looks like her great grandmother Elizabeth woodville. She was said to have this golden /red hair that was passed down to Elizabeth of York then Henry and Elizabeth I
Elizabeth I looked like her mother (dark eyes, same nose) and her father (red hair). It was Elizabeth of York who looked like her blonde mother. Elizabeth Woodville was a noted beauty. Neither Elizabeth I nor Anne Boleyn were thought of as highly. Elizabeth I's alleged beauty was a conceit, which was primarily in comparison to her unhandsome half-sister. Also, courtiers were blowing smoke in praising her, which Elizabeth encouraged because she was vain and probably also because she wanted to abase her subordinates and keep them off balance. Mary Stuart was considered better looking than Elizabeth I (even by Elizabeth herself).
As an expert when it comes to Philip II. of Spain, I've got to correct a small detail. As a matter of fact Philip wasn't Mary's first choice. She showed affection and love interest to Philip's father - Emperor Charles V., who wasn't enclined to marry again after his wife passed away (not to speak of marrying overseas!), so it was actually he who suggested for Mary to marry his son Philip.
Interesting history and biography of two sisters. Love ancient history, always have and can’t get enough about reading about it. Thank you for sharing this wonderful and educational video, it is awesome 👏 👏👏👏👍👍👍
Genuine question, because I’m too tired to look it up, but did Jane or Mathilda have a coronation? It might be a technicality, but it’s an important technicality.
I think the portrait talks more about of the painter's ability than the physical traits of his subjects. I don't remember any English records mentioning anything abnormal about Phillip's legs but they did mention him trying to walk so correctly that made him look stiff. Yes, very likely as he was always trying to have a kind of royal aloofness/seriousness that made him unpopular in certain places and popular in others.
@@mlss1229 Probably but I don't think so, look carefully at the portrait. Obviously the artist wanted to give the royal couple a kind of dignity but the result was the opposite: Big heads and small hands. The small dogs on the floor look almost cartoonish. Erin Shawk -Lady Jane Gray is basically just a unexepected heir since Edward VI chose her but Mary Tudor was the first properly crowned queen of england, idk about Matilda tho.
@@insertname1003 Matilda was never crowned. She made it to Westminster but her arrogance and the people's interest in the benefits of having Stephen as king prevented it.
Jane was proclaimed queen but was never actually crowned. Mary acted too quickly and gathered support/marched on London. Jane's supporters never had enough time to put together a coronation to make everything official.
Mary Tudor would be all, "Um, yeah, and she got deposed and thrown into the Tower. I'm sorry, she's queen of shit. Move over, I'm the first crowned queen."
Interesting how men would curse the women for not being able to bare a son, when its actually the men’s sperm carrying the chromosome that decides the gender of the baby
AG GG right?
And such hypocrisy to claim such faith and devotion to the will of their Christian god along with claiming god himself says the man is higher than the woman but yet it’s the woman’s fault ? And also if women had a choice for a male or female child I’m pretty sure the princess or queen would rather have a male duh. I would think god is punishing me with no heir not my wife even if she was unfaithful or has not been living right I would still see god doing it not her or me

He liked (male) children.
It's said that when he was with his second wife he fell from a horse, he apparently changed a lot after that and soon killed his wife.
I think that's why he stopped loving his children, obviously at the beginning he cared about his daughters education.
What's interesting is that Mary held many grudges against many people surrounding her father for destroying her life, but not against her father directly. In truth, he was the one solely responsible for her misery, yet he was the only one she seemed to hold no grudge against.
Sometimes the abused will defend the abusive parent. Mary certainly defended her father despite what he did to her and Elizabeth.
I doubt we know how she felt. Her position depended on Henry, even after his death. She could have never criticized him.

Ya that's a big one, Cecil was a key figurehead in Elizabethen England
Interesting that Elizabeth didn’t end up showing mercy to her cousin, Mary Queen of Scots, like Elizabeth was given mercy by her sister Mary Tudor. Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned for 19 years, and then was finally beheaded (all for the accusation that she was a part of a plot to murder Queen Elizabeth).
@@steveb1164
Why do you say that? Queen Mary could have easily had Elizabeth killed if she wanted, yet she didn’t do so.
And regarding your first comment…
It was a matter of principle! Catherine and Henry were married for so long, and their daughter Mary was born legitimately.
I can relate because my mother is Catholic as well, yet she divorced my father when I was a young teenager…
When the church told her that she would not be able to receive communion anymore because of the divorce, she was about to take them up on their suggestion that she get the marriage “annulled,“ involving her giving them a ton of money, which was the church’s way of saying that her marriage to my father was never legitimate/never happened, and thus my brother and I were born illegitimately “out of wedlock!“
She was about to pay a good $600 at least, if memory serves me right, to declare my brother and I as bastard children! All just so that she could receive a tiny piece of bread every Sunday from the priest. 🙄
I was insulted by her even considering this as a valid option, and told her as such.
@@steveb1164 why Catherine and Mary should give up their rights?
To sum it up: Henry was the absoulute worst and his legacy is destroyed haha
That’s true

For some reason I really love the posh, proper accents of the experts in this video. Quite soothing to listen to
I feel for both Mary and Elizabeth.

Yes! I agree!

She did hate her, she hated Anne Boleyne for replacing her mom and was glad she died, and she hated elizabeth for being her child.
For people saying women are more driven by emotions whereas men are driven by their brain , it depends on the person not the gender .
Men who are ignoble fall into a succubus persona. Women ashamed of humility trade heavenly grace for shoddier power. The identities of the genders, when confused, do not bear good fruit that lasts.

Given the fact that she visited her Brother and Elisabeth when they were children.
they were given the same tutor and education meaning they where in the same place.
and we do remember her as Bloody Mary, victors cast shadows to those they hate. and yet Elisabeth killed more people.
Some biographies say that Mary was actually very fond of her baby sister until they were pitted against each other.
I just love watching your shows, they are just done so well. This particular edition is of even greater personal interest. I found out that Thomas Cranmer was my 15th or 16th grandfather. I have learned very little about him yet. I do love learning more about the Tudors and my relative in particular. Thank you!
People here complaining of reuploading.....me here is glad cause I wouldn’t have found this. Been going through a lot of documentaries lately cause normal shows are too boring now
Henry goes through 6 women, supposedly searching for someone to give him a son- but we really know he was after young umm women- and it was thought that women would rule by emotion.... and men rule by their king stick 😒
@@vi6126 my mistake, but still confused. The current queen is a direct descendent of Mary Boleyn; how?
I really expect Henry be burning in hell with all his kids laughing in his face

Actually Catherine was loved by her English people and believed her to be the true queen. That's one of the reasons Mary had so many supporters
Catholics
In toxic, dysfunctional families, one child is designated the "golden child", and another is deemed the "scapegoat", and they are treated accordingly.
But how do you know she had red hair?
Craziest Plot Twist in History!
Henry craved for a son, not wanting his daughters and his son soon died and one of his daughters ruled the kingdom. That's just crazy!
Not only did they rule, but Elizabeth made England the richest and most successful country in the world at the time , they really underestimated her
You would think by the second decade of the 21st century, that they would give an accurate report of Queen Mary.
She was never Queen.
You cannot be appointed Queen, you have to have a Coronation.
Well it was only 9 days nothing to be recognized
@@coffeepandacat she was the first queen of england no matter what. Doesn't matter if it only was for 9 days, she was first.
Elizabeth also witnessed how wrong marriage can go by losing her own mother.
My favorite part of the story of King Henry was how we asked one woman if she would marry him and she said no my neck is not strong enough to marry you
What a coincidence! I was just reading about "Bloody Mary" and Queen Elizabeth I yesterday!

Henry and Catherine actually did have a son, their first child was a son but after 50 days he ended up passing away which devastated his parents, he had been in a different castle with a bunch of wet nurses which makes me think that there could have been foul play with his death
haha yeah because infant death in the 16th century was so unheard of.
@@meginmdYeah, foul play is not necessary in the death of a baby back then. Babes are very vulnerable and they didn’t understand how to keep them alive and healthy.
28:10 THEM LEGS BOI 😭😭😭
I thought the same thing!🤣🤣
HAHAHHAHAHAA
Hilariously from a biology point of few Henry was at fault for his lack of male heirs, as a women's egg can only give an X chromosome, and a man can give either a Y or an X chromosome. There for the biological sex of a child is determined by the mans contribution to the child.
That’s true
How raw power always works: blame & punish the victim.
Of course they had no clue the man determines the gender of the child back then
@@shaylatorch and where did they get the dumb and foolish clue that the woman determined the sex of the child back then
Even though their reign (Elisabeth and Mary) wasn't of such a long duration, I can't help but be so happy that they went through all that and fought to show that women aren't less than men, that we are just as capable (and cruel, eg.

Hello Nora😊
"One was reviled as Bloody Mary, the other the other was celebrated as GLORIANA THE VIRGIN QUEEN YAAAASSSS"
Written by the protestants lol
“Cursed” could also be explained via whoever he was related to murdered the Princes in the Tower.
I’m not suggesting anyone actually practiced magic upon Henry’s family like The White Queen novel series suggests. “Cursed” in this context is the Christian European equivalent to karma.
Eh, he's more closely related to the Princes themselves (his uncles) than the person who probably had them murdered (his mother's uncle aka his great-uncle)
If you seen a curse trust me you would know reaping and sowing vs a Curse
I wish I really knew how these people looked like in real life! Too bad 😭😤
3:32 FFS. That's not Mary I, that's Mary Queen of Scots.
11:44 and that's Catherine Parr. They got some decent historians for this, but whoever chose the illustrations is a blooming idiot.
12:12, and of course that's Elizabeth I as a preteen, though the sound bites make it seem like this is supposed to be a young Mary I (who would have been in her late twenties and well beyond tending to Elizabeth).
19:18 again, that's Catherine Parr on the left, pre-teen Elizabeth on the right.
23:15 Mary Queen of Scots
41:36 I've given up on keeping track of all the misused images, but dammit, this is ALSO Mary Queen of Scots
All the effort Henry went through to ensure his lineage would live on and it dies with all his children not bearing kids
Well said.💯
Absolutely subscribed. This entire channel.is fascinating!
Mary ran so Elizabeth could walk, let’s be honest here

"Many forget the fact that Mary was the first crowned queen of england"
Lady Jane Grey: 👁👄👁
Matilda 👁👄👁
Genuine question, because I’m too tired to look it up, but did Jane or Mathilda have a coronation? It might be a technicality, but it’s an important technicality.
I can see how the prince wasn’t a good husband, just look at his legs🤣 28:10
Mary is seating but she looks standing. No, we definitively need to look for better sources than this one.
The epic music legit makes this feel like a movie
Um....Lady Jane Gray was the first crowned queen of England in her own right. A very short reign, for sure, but she was crowned queen.
She wasn't properly crowned Queen and wasn't accepted by the Council or the public. She was a Queen in name only for those 9 days
Mary Tudor would be all, "Um, yeah, and she got deposed and thrown into the Tower. I'm sorry, she's queen of shit. Move over, I'm the first crowned queen."
