the fact that she was intelligent and educated and a talented writer, she gave generously to the poor and charitable causes and supported education and also extended an olive branch to Mary shows how badly her image is spun in history. I also believe that Anne and Henry wearing yellow each had different motivations. Henry was probably doing it to piss people off and cause a stir wheres i now feel Anne was genuinely doing it as a sign of respect to show that she did not see any ill feelings towards Catherine. I feel Anne was a pawn in the game of men from the start. her father pushed her to marry Henry because why be a Countess when you can be a queen. and then Henry felt like he needed an excuse to get rid of Catherine and Anna was the perfect excuse. More should be written and taught about her and more perspectives about her experience should be written about.
Oh, I don’t believe for one SECOND she had any respect for Catherine. People haven’t changed. No woman NOW would have respect for a woman who kept her from her heart’s desire for 7 years. No way. She felt the same way we do now. And she actually told a nursemaid to “box that bastard’s ears (Mary)”. Now, if she may have have some sympathy after she HERSELF was in the same position, though granted she didn’t have much time to repent, herself being a mother, is up for conjecture.
Flibbertigibbet6 That May be true, but I doubt very seriously they wore it to honor Catherine. I’ve never, in any of the books I’ve read, had anyone say that. Certainly nobody at the time said it. They wore yellow, a happy color, and went to rejoice that they were really free now. They were pretty hard hearted about it.

@@coeuyu I'm sorry, Your Majesty, but you really did have a problem. And your wives did indeed have the last laugh. Word amongst us common folk is their spirits have returned to this world to tell their tales in the form of a musical.
I will add that Anne’s fall and execution were caused by a few more factors, beyond her miscarriage in January 1536 (of a fetus believed to be male) and her dislike of Henry’s continuous infidelity. Anne also disagreed with Henry on how the profits seized from the dissolution of the monasteries should have been used. Anne believed that the seized goods should fund educational and charitable ventures that would contribute to the Reform movement, while Henry fully believed that all contents seized from the monasteries were forfeited to, and thus direct property of the crown (as in, Henry should’ve been able to keep all the seized wealth for himself). This disagreement led to a Chaplain affiliated with Anne giving a sermon which compared Henry to king Ahasuerus being led astray by Haman (symbolic of Henry’s advisors who supported him keeping the seized wealth, and who did not support the educational endeavors Anne promoted), in which Anne was compared to Esther. I.E. In order for Henry to walk the path of righteousness once more, he needed to listen to Anne and not his advisors. Henry did NOT appreciate this sermon (as you might have guessed), and this hastened his resolve to make Anne fall. Combine that with Thomas Cromwell’s vendetta against his once ally Anne (now, if he wished to gain power, Anne had to lose power), and Henry’s increasing paranoia and we see how a Anne could fall in such a relatively short period of time. I recommend everyone check out Claire Ridgeway’s work on Anne Boleyn, and especially “The Fall of Anne Boleyn : A Countdown” if you want to learn more about the reasons behind Anne’s fall.
Xenon Fae I love Claire Ridgeway’s UA-cam channel! I love Anne Boleyn so much. She is one of my historical heroines, the other Anne Frank. I honestly think she was probably the most influential queen consort of English history. She was able to change the country’s religion based off of one book she introduced to him, and of course his love for her contributed also. Such a shame it ended so terribly, and everyone around the world knew the charges were lies and trumped up. A video suggestion, could you do one on Catherine Parr she is just as iconic.
Just commenting to say I really love that you said, “within days of Anne’s murder.” Because it was absolutely without a doubt, just that. She was an incredible woman who I wish I could have met.
Anne is definitely one of the most interesting of Henry's wives, primarily because she used the leverage of marriage as a way to gain power. Gaining power for a woman was different than getting power for a man, as for a woman it meant possible security and stability in a time when she had no guarenteed of safety, from dying in childbirth to being legally beat to death by her husband. Women were disadvantaged economically and socially, and you can't blame Anne for wanting to try and find a way out. She very nearly did, save for Henry being a lecherous creep. I really love a lot of the modern portrayals of Anne in media from grade-A actresses - Natalie Portman and Natalie Dormer are the most well-known. My favorite has to be Genevieve Bujold from Anne of a Thousand Days, who to me seems most like how Anne would have been in real life.
Natalie Portman's performance in "the other Boleyn girl" was shit, but yeah Natalie Dormer in "The Tudors" did a fantastic job. Never seen someone embody a historical figure so perfectly.
I love Anne Boleyn. She really seemed like a woman ahead of her time. Thank you for doing her history justice! Part of me wishes she had just married someone else and never became queen, but who knows how history would have changed if that were the case. This was a wonderful video on the life of a fascinating Queen! As someone who greatly admires Anne, I’m always hesitant in watching videos that cover her life, as so much of what we know of her has been sensationalized and falsified over the centuries to paint her as some scheming, ruthless harlot, and I hate having to watch content that unjustly perpetuates this mythical image of her. This video thankfully did NOT do that, and (although there are errors in this video) I feel that Lindsay did a stellar job (as she usually does) of portraying the complex, tenacious, caring, and intelligent woman Queen Anne Boleyn was! To the Eternal Queen and Mother of Gloriana, here’s to Anna Regina!
As UA-camr TheBullen1 says in his Anne Boleyn series - "Anne Boleyn is undoubtedly the most published, the most beloved, the most revered and certainly the most misunderstood of Henry's wives" and he's right - even 484 years after her death, she still has the power to fascinate and provoke strong emotions
I think she was an overbearing and spiteful stepmom though. Ironic that she supported children’s causes while helping to torture the ones around her, JMO. There’s a lot I undoubtedly don’t know….
Anne also ordered her stepdaughter be a servant to Elizabeth, it was designed to humiliate the princess Mary and show her that she was now no longer royal, so a bit disingenuous to say that Mary rejected Anne's overtures of friendship. She really didn't endear herself to the Catholics of the country, so she found very quickly that she didn't have any support or protection when her downfall came, she tried desperately to forge a relationship with the Spanish ambassador towards the end, most historians agree that it was because she realised that whilst she had pushed for French interests, the French would not help her.
To be fair, a lot of that came from Henry since Anne's political clout was reduced after Elizabeth's birth. Since Elizabeth was the kings only legitimate heir at the time, the people she was surrounded with and learned from were carefully selected and though anne may have had some input it was mostly Henry's say, especially when it came to Mary's appointment there since Mary was the kings other child and placing her in a serving position was controversial. One popular theory is that Henry wanted Mary there so that she would be humiliated into declaring herself a bastard, preventing a succession crisis down the road. I feel really bad for Mary, Anne was not a good stepmom and Henry may have actually have been a worse father

Someone mentioned that Anne was in the end, the winner! Very true. Her royal offspring became one of England's greatest rulers. Catherine's child, on the other hand, was deemed as bloodthirsty, whom no one speaks of w love and admiration! Anne left an admirable legacy to her memory! What more can be asked for or desired?
Elisabeth gave her sister bloody mary and destroyed her Reputation. Mary was as poor as any women near Henry. Also Elisabeth mudered another Queen just like her father did. She executed Mary Queen of Scots.
I realize we’ll never know what actually happened and historians debate this point but I think it’s far more likely that Henry asked Cromwell to think up a way to get rid of Anne rather than Cromwell just doing it on his own. There’s a documentary on this, the last days of Anne Boleyn if anyone is interested
I feel bad for Anne. I feel like she definitely didn’t want to be Henry’s mistress and said the only way he can have her is if they were married and totally didn’t expect Henry to do all that.
Excellent video! The only small correction is that the photo used for Anne's mother is actually a portrait of Margaret Pole, one of the last living Plantagenets who was sadly executed at 67 (well into Henry's reign when his paranoia hit crazy levels). She lived quite an amazing life and would be a great subject for a future video! She lived through the wars of the roses (cousin of Elizabeth of York, Henry's mother), saw her brother executed, was a peeress in her own right, lived on to have many children including the infamous Archbishop of Canterbury Reginald Pole, and was cruelly executed at 67. I highly recommend checking her out if you haven't! :)
I always admired Anne; she’s one of my favourite wives of Henry and like Katherine Howard and Katherine of Aragon, she was misunderstood for false gossip and (maybe) jealousy. I never knew some parts of her life like giving charity for example; she was certainly intelligent, kind and caring - though her temper did lead her down a dark road but who can blame a person if you find them in a bad mood? Apart from that, she was a woman ahead of her time; and if she hadn’t been born, then the UK would still be Catholic, there’ll be no influence and education for women; there would have not church services that would be inclusive for everyone by changing the original language for every one to understand and (I think) there would be no female monarchs who would be allowed to rule in their own right (including Elizabeth 1). So generally, Anne was one of a few women who changed the inclusion of women and the world without realising it; I know not everyone would agree but tbh, that’s my own opinion. I cannot wait for next week’s video on Elizabeth. 😁
I have always been interested in Ann Boleyn! She is so fascinating and not at all the husband-stealing flirt people would paint her as! She was an intelligent woman and was very cunning! 😊
Dear Lindsay, this is by far my favourite UA-cam Channel, very entertaining, your voice is professional, soothing and full of nuance. I was wondering if you ever considered producing a video about Queen Elizabeth the Second?
Thought I would watch and listen to the story of Queen Anne Boleyn since it's the anniversary of her execution. She may be a rather complex and controversial woman, but she is incredibly fascinating! It's very sad that King Henry VIII had poor Queen Anne killed on trumped up charges, but she got the final triumph and the last laugh, when her daughter Queen Elizabeth became England's greatest queen! ❤👑❤
Can you even imagine being such a young girl, shipped away to a giant castle to live, then being the object of the king's lust?? Wow, it's crazy to even fathom...
I Loved the history of Anne Boleyn as a child in History class and still love it to this day. That poor woman was robbed and even still is accused of things that are untrue. I am a London tour Host and always make sure to tell her true story when I go past the Tower of London. She was an amazing woman of British History who gave birth to an amazing woman of British History! Love Her! Thank you for telling her story! :). (Also, she was beheaded within the walls of the Tower, not on Tower Hill, like the others. Person’s of high status like her were given a little better treatment ... if you can call it that. )
Anne Boleyn Is my aunt. Her sister Mary is my grandmother. My other grandmother, Mary's daughter, was in charge of Anne's bedchamber. It's said she was the daughter of Henry VIII because they looked so much alike.
This might be off topic but I hate how Anne is stereotyped as being sexually promiscuous and somewhat of an “evil” woman. Anne wasn’t sexually promiscuous or versed in love affairs, if I’m going to be blunt she was probably a virgin until she met long Henry and Anne was a clever women but she wasn’t the conniving woman that she is mad out to be in mythos.
Queen Anne of Cleves was a German Princess and Queen Katherine of Aragon is a daughter of one of the most powerful kingdom in Europe at that time her mother is Queen Isabela I of Castille and her father is King Ferdinand of Aragon. Her nephew is the Holy Roman Emperor. king Henry VIII did not beheaded these two royal queens
her poor parents , to have their daughter ,and son , killed in such in a horrible fashion , must have been devastating as parents , whether they'd believed in the accusations or not . At the end of the day Both Anne and George were still their kids , and to know that their offspring had to die in such a way is so sad .
Very impressed with the presentation.. well explained and clear. I understand the history better. Always wanted to know this, despite reading, going back n forth with the pages to match..this doc finally explained all. Cant wait to watch the rest.. 👍
Is it true that whilst Anne was being beheaded Henry was playing tennis? I saw it on Horrible Histories once but it's another one of those things that sounds crazy. Like we know Henry was awful and treated people like shit but to literally play a game while your wife is being beheaded is just so cold and unfeeling and heartless. Like historians thought he was a psychopath or a sociopath and in all honesty I don't think it's a stretch to believe that. playing tennis whilst your wife dies is like another level of wrong.
Probably because finding correct portraits are extremely hard with how similar most look and how online sources also get a lot wrong regarding pictures
Anne actually didn't popularize the french hood in England. There are portraits of Katherine of Aragon wearing one, and it was already known among the fashionable ladies of the court.
You should do a video on Margaret Beaufort. Talk about a women who could work something to her advantage and make her son a king even though he had no legitimate claim to the throne... Queen mother is still a queen of England.

@@mediocremaiden8883 Thank you, Poirot is one of my heroes, it is a shame he wasn't real!!

@@Fransisca_Athanasia lol his videos are pretty good
@@purple_rxin heck yeah^^
OmgI love all the oversimplified quotes
Someone mentioned that Anne was in the end, the winner! Very true. Her royal offspring became one of England's greatest rulers. Catherine's child, on the other hand, was deemed as bloodthirsty, whom no one speaks of w love and admiration! Anne left an admirable legacy to her memory! What more can be asked for or desired?
Elisabeth gave her sister bloody mary and destroyed her Reputation. Mary was as poor as any women near Henry. Also Elisabeth mudered another Queen just like her father did. She executed Mary Queen of Scots.
last time i was this early jane seymour was still alive
Wrong portrait at 1:14 - that is Margaret Pole
I thought that.
WTF? Holy Shite! You're right...
I thought the same
I realize we’ll never know what actually happened and historians debate this point but I think it’s far more likely that Henry asked Cromwell to think up a way to get rid of Anne rather than Cromwell just doing it on his own.
Loving the 'Queens of the World' series so far ❤️
Only if Henry knew that Anne did give him the heir he wanted so much

Fitting you upload this around Queen Elizabeth I's birthday

Can you even imagine being such a young girl, shipped away to a giant castle to live, then being the object of the king's lust?? Wow, it's crazy to even fathom...
I been watching The Tudors, it's really good, too bad her life ended so soon, so sad
There is a beautiful new music album: "Music for Anne Boleyn - Court music from her rise and reign". For those who are interested. :)
"Now... Did you get my letter about the 'duckies'?" 😂 I can only imagine Anne's face when she saw that on the letter 😂
One of the first European queens I learned about and this video came out on my 25th birthday! What a great gift 😊
Lindsay: your medieval royal family videos are my favorite. Love your sass as well. ❤️
I just love love loooove your videos, they are fantastic, i am ever so fascinated by the English medieval history and royalty.
Yay I get to watch one just as its uploaded
I Loved the history of Anne Boleyn as a child in History class and still love it to this day. That poor woman was robbed and even still is accused of things that are untrue. I am a London tour Host and always make sure to tell her true story when I go past the Tower of London. She was an amazing woman of British History who gave birth to an amazing woman of British History! Love Her!
Thank you for telling her story! :). (Also, she was beheaded within the walls of the Tower, not on Tower Hill, like the others. Person’s of high status like her were given a little better treatment ... if you can call it that. )
Thank you Lindsay!💕keep em coming!💕
Anne Boleyn Is my aunt. Her sister Mary is my grandmother. My other grandmother, Mary's daughter, was in charge of Anne's bedchamber. It's said she was the daughter of Henry VIII because they looked so much alike.

I love this series!
Thank god it's been so long since you posted a video about queens of Europe I thought the series ended
Never been so early... love ur work!
You used a painting of Margaret pole for Anne’s mother
Simple mistake. They happen.
her poor parents , to have their daughter ,and son , killed in such in a horrible fashion , must have been devastating as parents , whether they'd believed in the accusations or not . At the end of the day Both Anne and George were still their kids , and to know that their offspring had to die in such a way is so sad .
Anne Boleyn a strong woman
She was taken 485 years today
May she Rest In Peace
Thank you so much .... I love Queen Elizabeth I soo much.. i actually watched a movie "Elizabeth" Kate Blanchet was the protagonist in it😍😍
Anne Boleyn is My Fave Of Henry VIII's Wives!!! History ROCKS!!!!💯🥰💖💕🤣
Very impressed with the presentation.. well explained and clear. I understand the history better. Always wanted to know this, despite reading, going back n forth with the pages to match..this doc finally explained all. Cant wait to watch the rest.. 👍
Can you do one on Jane Seymour? I haven't seen a lot of info on her.
Thank God for Anne Boleyn, she gave us the greatest Monarch in history, Queen Elizebeth! Great work Lindsay!
Yeah and what about me..?
@@cara-cw2re I've never heard of Queen Cara but I'm open to adjust my ranking if needed....
Why is the picture used to represent Anne’s mother, Elizabeth Howard, actually a picture of Margaret Pole, Countess of Salisbury?
Probably because finding correct portraits are extremely hard with how similar most look and how online sources also get a lot wrong regarding pictures
Idiotwhotalks toomuch - fair point. But that particular portrait has been identified as Margaret Pole for a very long time.
Anne actually didn't popularize the french hood in England. There are portraits of Katherine of Aragon wearing one, and it was already known among the fashionable ladies of the court.
It’s the zooming in on the codpiece for me.
I'm unsure about Anne's attempts to befriend Princess Mary. Most everywhere says she turned her into a Maid for Elizabeth
I agree!
Lindsay, would love to hear any history on Scottish rulers. My partner just found out he as Scottish heritage and likes your videos.
Mary Queen of Scots is a fascinating monarch! Her story is so sad to be honest xoxo
You should do a video on Margaret Beaufort. Talk about a women who could work something to her advantage and make her son a king even though he had no legitimate claim to the throne... Queen mother is still a queen of England.
I agree
Anne had such an amazing life before Henry! What a shame this happened to her! I’m glad she got the last laugh!
