To those that doubt it, the story of seasons 1 & 2 being offered back to the BBC in the late 90's is absolutely true and has been verified. The employee told the Nigerian station that "they were all out on video" and to destroy the material. Why? Sheer and total ineptitude. The more you read into missing episodes the more you understand what a total shambles of an organisation the BBC truly is. Just remember we care, these people don't. Their just doing a job and probably quite half assed too. There's the story of the employee in the 80's who deliberately ignored the instructions to save the material and continued to destroy returned prints for years. Just because he was an asshole. That's all it takes for these things to be lost forever. Just think if that BBC worldwide employee had just bothered to make a phone call or even attempt to do his job properly we could have been watching Marco Polo, The Reign of Terror & The Crusade back in 1998 and re-watching them for the dozenth time now. As I've just mentioned on another post, worse than that, the BBC were still routinely WIPING stuff well into the early 1990s, as much as they try to play it down! Shocking.
One takes place in China, and then France, and then Palestine The fact that all of it, is in a way, a historical event, that actually happen, makes me want to watch it so much, So I can't choose between these three. I just hope it will be found! :D
Having actually worked for the BBC and at TV Centre. I heard a story that the last episode of the tenth planet William Hartnell's regeneration scene was being used By the Blue Peter production team. The tape a 2 inch quad was in their production office in East tower, it was left there over night waiting to be returned to the BBC archive then at Windmill Road. The next morning tape had gone. This most likely in the 1980's. Josh you do a fantastic Job, such high quality both in production and contents. Australia and the Dr Who community should be proud of you.
The problem with videotape back then was just the cost of the media ($200 a cassette or more) and the cameras (thousands of dollars for BOTH camera recorders and set-top players). That's the reason it didn't take off until the early 1980s, really. They had to come up with more economical consumer formats. They had home players as early as 1963 but they were just too expensive and over the years more companies came and went with their own machines and tape formats. The economical standardization didn't come until VHS and Beta arrived. They had videotape in the 1950s and there are number of TV specials recorded in the late 1950s on videotape that still survive. They were eventually digitized or transferred to film like the surviving color clips of the 1960s Carson Tonight Show episodes were. The thing is what they had (videotape-wise) for the original Doctor Who was BETTER than what we got for VHS. Way-higher resolution, at least two times VHS quality. VHS is crap, guys. It wears out and the quality is at best inconsistent. I never liked the format that much, TBH. I grew up with it and besides the color issues (NTSC = "NEver The Same Color TWICE!") the audio recording was often bad in store-bought tapes. I don't know how many tapes I bought of movies and TV shows (had half the original Star Trek on VHS!) that had that horrible humming on them and it wasn't the play -- it was the stupid tape and poor processing of it! I never bought that much on VHS. I've watched a few Troughton serials on DVD and now the last storyarc Hartnell appeared in as the regular lead. What survived is in pretty good condition considering they viewed this as disposable entertainment! Ah, if they only knew--! The only way we'll get the missing episodes this point is if they DO more animated reconstructions with the surviving audio. I don't think they'll find much else. Maybe 3-4 more missing episodes on 16mm transfers but I think they've found pretty much all they ever will of what survived the great BBC tape wiping.
Yeah that's true about home video being so costly. There was a copy made of The Ice Warriors in the 1960s by a university lecturer who had access to the equipment. He made them so his sick son could watch them while he recuperated from whatever he had wrong with him. Then of course as he didn't own the tapes and they were needed for their proper purpose they were reused. Including the 2 still missing episodes.

Maybe it’s like that for every missing episode. Just imagine, we have all of “The Daleks Master Plan” and “The Abominable Snowmen” but the BBC is waiting for a few more episodes to be found to announce the news to the public
@@TheDigitalApple It would be strange but if they’re waiting for a certain episode from a story that’s complete now that they have found I could see that happening at one point
That could be true, not only is the anniversary of dr who starting in 2023 but that happened to the web of fear in 2013, Philip Morris tried to find the web of fear ep 3 so the bbc did not announce the recovery until 2013.
I always look at this situation and think why they haven't taken this opportunity to do a remake of all the arcs that have missing episodes, and use the actors from An Adventure in Time and Space (David Bradley, etc etc) because if some of these episodes are most likely never going to reappear, why not honor it and use the same old techniques but with the docudrama cast, would be a fun project to see in my opinion.
I just noticed an editing error (or something else). At 8:46, the map thing said that Episode 1 of The Crusade was recovered from New Zealand in 1998, but at 9:04, you said it was returned to the BBC in 1999.
I have always wanted to see the episodes of William Hartnell from the beginning on. Is it greedy to want every single episode that was ever created!? 😍
I'd love to see Marco Polo be returned, although failing that, an animated reconstruction in colour as well as black and white. The coloured photographs make it look so beautiful, and I'd love to be able to experience that
Marco Polo was a tremendous production and I daresay a historical achievement. I had the pleasure of seeing the color telesnap reconstruction, which was marvelous. Maybe someone will be able to do a 3D animation one of these days.
By the way, second comment, but I can't understand how the BBC had The Invasion Ep. 4 and then suddenly it's missing. I was looking at the list and the episodes for The Invasion listed '2, 3, *4* , 5, 6, 7, 8', and then the episode goes missing along with the already missing Ep. 1. It's just so confusing.
Hell no. At least the missing episodes still have audio, they could be recreated (mission to the unknown), animated etc, all that and have endless doctor who in the future.
Marco Polo was re-released on March 7 2019 in the newly re-released 'The Lost TV Episodes Collection 1' with new Dr Who logo. LOVE all your parts in this series!
We have just submitted 2 reel to reel tapes with complete audio for many 1960's episodes. These have proved to be the highest quality audio found. They may be used in any future endeavours to reconstruct missing episodes. Kaleidoscope are working with the tapes right now and any statement of theirs may be found on their Facebook page.
Wow! Excellent work Josh! If I didn't know it was a fan production I'd believe it was an official video created by the BBC! Very informative and probably the best fan video I've seen talking about the missing episodes. I very much look forward to Part 2 and all future parts of this series.
Sadly, the highest quality ones that are available on Dailymotion, but I'm fairly sure higher quality encodes exist out there. Wouldn't have a clue how to find them, myself! Thanks for watching :)
Very well made and very well done! And great timing what with the recent discovery of the higher quality audio recordings. As for which one, it'd have to be Marco Polo. Waris Hussein's second time directing deserves to be seen in full. And the set designs look pretty lavish, at least from what the promotional photos show. If nothing else, I'd like to see the sword fight between Marco and Tegana.
Excellent work, Josh, a very professional feel! As to which story I'd like to see returned, well, since I'm content with the imaginative reconstruction of The Reign of Terror in 2013, I'd have to go with either Marco Polo or The Crusade.
Hi josh... Yes, they are the "Randolph" tapes. They where in my possession for years until I recently passed them on to my son who then loaned them to kaleidoscope for investigation. They apparently informed him that they are the most complete with beginning and end soundtracks, with narrative and superb audio quality.
@@JoshSnares yes, who knew that these old reel to reel tapes would cause a stir. I'm glad I have them to Rob, I actually suggested that he put them on eBay to see if he could make a few quid!
At 01'59" you mention there were eight photos taken off air by a fan in Australia. One of these images (the single shot of Hartnell) has since been identified as coming from an episode of The Aztecs. Otherwise I'm seriously impressed by the production values of this. You've done a great job.
The fact Nigeria wanted to give all of season 1 AND 2 to the BBC and they turned it down, absolutely baffles me. I mean, if this had happened in the 60's, alright. But in the mid-90's!!??!
As per usual, amazing work. I think the only constructive criticism I have would be to discuss more not just how you can watch each lost episode but what you really think is best. Obviously that might just stretch your time far too much and take away from the more objective/documentary style of the videos. Either way, please keep this series up, amazing to see a fan put this much care into the wonderful 1960s years of who.
What an amazingly produced video!! This is such a well done documentary type series! I look forward to seeing your future parts! Very impressive dude 👍🏾
i would save Marco Polo 100% although i really loved The Reign of Terror my favourite period setting their are only 2 missing episodes and the animation i thought wasn't to bad, i also enjoyed The Crusade which we also have half the story of.

Was hoping you were going to explain what happend in said missing episodes. Where can I find that? Just went through the jarring gap after season 2 into three and I wanna know what happened =(
Quite honestly, I would love The Crusade to either be found or animated for a Blu-Ray release of Season 2. I would love at least one episode of Marco Polo found though. Great video, can't wait for the Mission to the Unknown backstory!
@@JoshSnares I'm surprised that the BBC hasn't done that yet. Especially with all the news about the Classic Series being on Blu-Ray, Season 2 should really be up there alongside Tom's first, last and Peter's first.
A scary idea was how foolishly things were managed by BBC, a relative worked there in the 90's. They were could borrow anything that was in the archive, no charge! It didn't matter what it was if it was there they could take it out. At a time when it became easy to copy It's odd it wasn't stoped sooner, but sadly it also made it easy to loose things.
Derren Nesbitt is a family member of mine, and has some great stories about the production.
David Dumbell oh wow! Derren is a brilliant actor.
I just noticed an editing error (or something else). At 8:46, the map thing said that Episode 1 of The Crusade was recovered from New Zealand in 1998, but at 9:04, you said it was returned to the BBC in 1999.
Marco `polo needs ro return
Ya they need to animate it
I have always wanted to see the episodes of William Hartnell from the beginning on. Is it greedy to want every single episode that was ever created!? 😍
Great video, Josh! Looking forward to more :)
Lewis thank you!!
I'd love to see Marco Polo be returned, although failing that, an animated reconstruction in colour as well as black and white. The coloured photographs make it look so beautiful, and I'd love to be able to experience that
This is sooo good! I love this keep up the great work:)
Marco Polo of course. But would love to see the Crusade complete.
You ARE the best way to watch them (when possible). Your recons are the best I've ever seen. Totally seamless.
10:26
Either Marco Polo or The Crusade
Brilliant video. Well made, well explained. Thank you. :)
How wonderful it would have been to see Zienia Merton in Doctor Who. The Space: 1999 actress was in Marco Polo.
Wow! I was going to do a video like this, but you did it way better! I can't wait for the rest of the series! :D
Fantastic stuff. Cannot wait for the next part!
Thank you! I hope you enjoy the rest of the series :)
God, Marco Polo please come back to meeeee
This is amazingly well done. Your format, explanations, animations, and content are exceedingly well researched and presented. Thank you!
Brilliant video, well produced. Very impressive.
Would you push the button?
Every missing episode of the 60s are returned in perfect quality. But the show will be canceled after 1 or 2 final seasons.
Released two months after I published this video 😂😂
Terrific work, you've a very calming tone of voice the way you deliver, perfect to watch with a cup off tea!
Good Documentary friend. Keep mining those Doctor Who gems.
Absolutely brillaint video can’t believe I’ve not found this channel as of now it’s brilliant
The sets from Marco Polo are IN-CREDIBLE. Which makes the whole thing even sadder.
metalmugen they are so good!!
You know, for an amateur production, this was decidedly professional. Well done, man.
This is some high quality stuff.
We have just submitted 2 reel to reel tapes with complete audio for many 1960's episodes. These have proved to be the highest quality audio found.
They may be used in any future endeavours to reconstruct missing episodes.
Kaleidoscope are working with the tapes right now and any statement of theirs may be found on their Facebook page.
proudtobeated are these the Randolph Tapes? I discuss them in Part 2 :)
I would honestly like to see “The Crusade” returned, if only so that Season 2 would have no missing episodes!
Wow! Excellent work Josh! If I didn't know it was a fan production I'd believe it was an official video created by the BBC! Very informative and probably the best fan video I've seen talking about the missing episodes. I very much look forward to Part 2 and all future parts of this series.
Thank you! Next episode out very soon!
Really well made! Can someone tell me where the best place to view the more recent Loose Canon recons is? Jut UA-cam & Dailymotion?
Sadly, the highest quality ones that are available on Dailymotion, but I'm fairly sure higher quality encodes exist out there. Wouldn't have a clue how to find them, myself! Thanks for watching :)
Would like to see the myth makers restored as the story was good. Also less problematic should we say then the others.
6:36 Not a civil war, an invasion! Reign of Terror Episodes 4 and 6 were destroyed during the Turkish Invasion of Cyprus in 1974 🇨🇾
This absolutely fantastic!
Where can I find the older versions recons of Reign and Crusade?
TigerMan1995 they’re hidden in the depths of Dailymotion, sorry I didn’t keep links!
This will be a good reference. Thirty three parts?, cool!
I'll be doing three serials an episode, so only a 9-part series! 33 might make everyone a bit tired haha!
Lovely production! thanks for putting the time into making these
Thank you for sharing this 💜
Very well made and very well done! And great timing what with the recent discovery of the higher quality audio recordings.
As for which one, it'd have to be Marco Polo. Waris Hussein's second time directing deserves to be seen in full. And the set designs look pretty lavish, at least from what the promotional photos show.
If nothing else, I'd like to see the sword fight between Marco and Tegana.
conanfan1412 great choice!
They apparently informed him that they are the most complete with beginning and end soundtracks, with narrative and superb audio quality.
proudtobeated very exciting!
Brad Phipps that’s interesting, didn’t know that :)
very good job Josh!
Holy Shit! This is amazing. Too good to exist.
The fact Nigeria wanted to give all of season 1 AND 2 to the BBC and they turned it down, absolutely baffles me. I mean, if this had happened in the 60's, alright. But in the mid-90's!!??!
Learned something new from your video...and I'm old... so thank you...🐴
Alan Brown happy you enjoyed it!
James Crosse yeah I like to keep it subjective! I generally prefer animations, but many don’t. I like it to be up to the viewer!
What an amazingly produced video!! This is such a well done documentary type series! I look forward to seeing your future parts! Very impressive dude 👍🏾
The Who Collection thank you!
I'd love to actually know how popular Doctor Who is in countries like Nigeria nowadays.
Really enjoyed this. Well done.
JPR Guy thank you!
i would save Marco Polo 100% although i really loved The Reign of Terror my favourite period setting their are only 2 missing episodes and the animation i thought wasn't to bad, i also enjoyed The Crusade which we also have half the story of.
I want marco polo to come back the most
I have to be honest, I never much cared for most of the historical stories, I always preferred the science fiction ones. I would love all the Dalek and Cyberman stories to be found, and any with Wendy Padbury in them.
Interesting video, thanks.
I really didn't want to make an account that’s a good point, it’d be nice to have a “complete” season for Hartnell!
@@JoshSnares I'm surprised that the BBC hasn't done that yet. Especially with all the news about the Classic Series being on Blu-Ray, Season 2 should really be up there alongside Tom's first, last and Peter's first.
Great video - very informative and put together in a really interesting way. Subscribed and looking forward to the next one - thanks!
camdenguy thank you!
"So, how can you experience "the crusade" today.....
Please no...
I would love to see all of these, but my number one choice would be both Marco Polo and The Reign of Terror.
They could borrow clothes too- It just shows how little was understood about the value of what was made there. Most was sold of, as the building I went to was but it seems crazy now to realise what a waste of tax payers money it was.
I do like your review of how to see these old episodes as I've seen most of what is available already. Especially as new Who hasn't the spark of the old, it been fun watching the old & seeing how each Doctor brought something new.
Just finished the edge of destruction and went to purchase Marco polo only to find it missing. Disappointed as I love this original tardis crew.
Tyranniod it’s always sad when an episode is missing 😩
Brilliant video documentary :)
OMG.... this is fantastic..... well done.
Damian Karras SJ thank you!
Marco Polo, obviously. :)
Very good! Very informative
A lot of Ethiopian TV production centres were demolished in 80s
Like lots of African TV centres were
blown up I just wish That rumoured five episodes Did exist
