  • Pancho Villa and his guerrillas retreated into Northern Mexico after a brutal defeat while raiding Columbus N.M. Intent on pillaging Colonia Juarez they approached the cowering community under the cover of darkness. A story of miraculous deliverance that should be a movie. A modern version of Gadianton robbers in northern Mexico. Pancho's vision of Juarez burning spared the town and its inhabitants. Great bedtime Stories. fall to sleep with Brother Merrill's soothing voice, while you feel the Lord's love for you.

Thanks bro Merrill! My wife’s 2nd great grandfather lived in the Gila Valley late 1800’s /early 1900’s. Pancho Villa & company stole his prized white horse In one of his raids and grandpa tried everything he could to get the government to go to war with Villa so he could get his hose back! Didn’t happen of course !

And Pancho Villa joined the Church after that experience. He was one of 8 politicians killed in the Mexican Revolution trying to unseat Diaz’s successor after that dictator was booted. The Church leaders gave Pancho Villa a Book of Mormon after that experience. He was baptized a member of the Church. He was killed by those he was fighting when he was ambushed in his car and shot multiple times. After he was dead, there were two major revolutionary politicians left before the Revolution ended.

@@lancemerrill6390 I was wondering if you knew. Since your story telling didn’t go beyond the vision he had.
My comment is to add to your testimony of the power of the Lord in the protection of the Saints when they prayed for it to the Lord. His matchless power aided the Saints to obtain a meeting with Villa and give him a Book of Mormon.
The real irony is that a major break off of the Church operated down there with polygamy down there in recent years. But Mexico is second to the US in Church membership followed closely by Brazil. I believe the 3 Nephites are working to help bring their descendants into the Church.
In speaking of visions, that colony is not far from the Zone of Silence, an area of Northern Mexico where radio communication doesn’t work.
What irony, since prayer is a form of communication that always works.
I testify that what I added to this story is true and that faith and prayer does work.
Elder Mariner W Merrill would have testified of what I said here. He was an amazing apostle of the Lord.
By the way, I was born in Logan, like my mother was. Same hospital, same room. The hospital has since been torn down.
So your story of him opposing Satan in the Logan Temple was familiar to me.
My Stake President is the fifth great grandson of the Prophet Joseph’s personal doctor, John Bernheisel.
Thank you for your faithful dedication to the gospel. I love these stories you tell. Even the original comment on this thread is something I’ve heard about Pancho Villa before. My great great grandmother lived in Arizona and knew Geronimo. She lived until just after I was born.

I found this story very interesting because my mother was one of the little children who had to leave everything that wasn't absolutely necessary and come to the USA in 1912 when she was 6 years old. I had never heard this story. My mother told how she always believed that it was Poncho Via's men that were unruly and that Poncho Via actually liked the "Mormons". She even told of how she road her "stick" horse down the road along side of Poncho Via one time.

My grandmother was pregnant with my dad when they left. Grandfather was with the men driving cattle. They settled in Pima, AZ. When Dad was 3 yrs old, they went back to Juarez, where they remained for another 15 years or so. In the late 1930s they came back out, destitute & worn.
Burt Whetten later had a dream in which Villa came to him, pleading to have his temple ordinances performed. After approval from Church leaders, he was able to facilitate those ordinances for Villa & his wife.

My mother in law was born in Chuichupa. When her dad died after being struck by lightning, they moved to Colonia Juarez, where her widowed mother had a general store. Her name was Damiana Perez viuda de Burgos.

@@ChapinaUSA my grandmother was Georgeanna Maude Sevey b. 1902 in Col. Chuichupa. The following accounts were unforgettable to her as a young girl and are from her autobiography, “My many mansions“… In summer the electric storms were really terrific. One day while father was sitting at his desk, the lightning struck the telephone wires just outside. The phone was on the wall by his desk and when that lightning struck, a long tongue of flame was shot out into the room from the transmitter, just above father’s head; the noise was awful, like a loud, crackling gunshot. It was amazing he wasn’t killed. I was sitting in a chair and was very frightened.
Another time I was walking barefoot along the path (sidewalk) from Uncle Tom and Aunt Belle’s place. Their fence was barbed wire and very close to the path. A storm was about to break, but I wasn’t worried. I was just a little way to our house. Suddenly for some reason I left the sidewalk and went to the middle of the dusty street to walk. I loved the feel of the deep, powdery dust squishing between my bare toes. Almost the moment I got into the street, the lightning struck that fence, and a thick twisting rope of flame swept along that barbed wire fence like a giant snake, hissing and crackling. It was a sight I have never forgotten. Thanks to my guardian angel, I had moved just in time.

My Great Grandma had an interesting, and scary encounter with Ol’ Pancho and friends, while living in Colonial Juarez. They came to her home while her husband was out buying train tickets to send her and their children back to the states. He would follow with the wagon and their supplies. But he wanted to get his family safely out of Mexico, and away from the war. So while Great Grandpa was gone, Pancho Vila and his men came to the house. He had a brand new gun, which he was shooting in the air. My brave great grandmother told her children to stay inside, then she went out to meet Ol’ Pancho . She told him he had a nice gun. Then she asked him if she could shoot it. She made him a wager that she could shoot any target. So Pancho took her up on the wager. He picked a target, handed her the gun, she aimed, fired, and hit the target. Pancho laughed with glee, as she handed the gun back to him. He then turned his horse, motioned to his men to leave, and rode away, leaving her and their home alone. Great Grandpa put her and the children on the train, and he followed with no trouble from the Mexicans. They never went back, but rather, settled in Arizona. My Great Grandparents were not practicing polygamy.

That is a neat story and reminds of Ute Chief Walkara and the settlers of Manti. How he was told in a vision or by an angel to not attack the settlers at Manti.
If I remember right, I believe church leaders told those at Colonia Diaz to evacuate to Arizona, and all that stayed behind were killed by Pancho Villa's army.

And Pancho Villa joined the Church because of this experience. After being given a Book of Mormon while with the leaders of the government. He was later one of over a half a dozen revolutionary politicians killed during the Mexican revolution starting in 1910. The US invaded Mexico from Columbus New Mexico trying to capture him but failed in 1916. The next year, the US declared war on Germany after learning from British decoders and spies that they were offering Mexico US land if they joined the Central Powers. That occurred on April 6, on the anniversary of the battle of Shiloh won by US.Grant.
Another great story in Church history.
