  • Welcome a series of episodes aimed at giving you a comprehensive understanding of how fats are produced and stored within your body. In this presentation I will be giving a brief introductory overview of the metabolic pathway known as lipogenesis which is responsible for fatty acid production. As part of the presentation I will be answering a number of key questions such as ….
    What is lipogenesis? Which foods (if eaten in excess) cause lipogenesis ? What is the role of the liver in the process ? What is the input and starting material for the process? Where does lipogenesis occur within liver cells? At the end of this series of episodes on lipogenesis I will be presenting a list of questions to help test your understanding of the subject matter with model answers provided.

      With lipogenesis (fatty acids synthesis) your body is stocking up on fat. You then burn more fat, simply because there is more fat available.
      However, in order to use fat, your body needs to the reverse, known as lipolysis.
      Lipogenesis = Net fat gain

      Lipolysis is stopped by insulin, insulin is raised to get the sugar out of the blood, the sugar in the blood is raised by eating carbohydrates. Simple, you eat carbs (sugar, bread, cereal, potatos, ice creams, bagels) -> you get fat! Eat Protein and Fat (yeah!) that is meat, poultry, fatty fish, eggs, butter, olive oil and some leafy greens for a little carbs and you will loose weight. Educate yourself on a low carb lifestyle and you will apprehend or reverse diabetes, cardivascular disease, high blood pressure etc. or alternatively melt yourself in the gym, eat "healthy full grains", get fat and sick and have your doctor prescribe you drugs.

      Fine, since we changed the subject to 'Ketogenic Diet', I'll educate myself :
      "While in the short term the ketogenic diet may help one lose weight, this is not sustained over the long run. In addition, countless studies show that the diet is associated with many complications that often lead to emergency room visits and admissions for dehydration, electrolyte disturbances, and hypoglycemia [3 studies to support this claim]"

      @@marclink0 Hi, if you could please site the studies? Of course if they are observational studies they are for the garbage bin, read only control trials (if possible double-blind randomized). You can refer these studies to the people who reversed their diabetes and got off any medication. Weight loss (or better fat loss) is a "happy" adverse effect of the keto diet. Instead of many words take a look at the Virta study and some blurb at www.virtahealth.com/reversediabetes.,

      Straight up taken from PubMed www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK499830/ Bottom line is : No diet is a panacea, all have risks and benefits and should be discussed with a dietician/nutritionnist before being undertaken.
      Also, I would like to point out that virtahealth has their own "definition of diabetes reversal". Diabetes can only be truly reversed from bariatric surgery (aka, the pancreas regaining its normal function). Having an HbA1C over 6.5% is a diagnostic criteria for diabetes, but going under only means that diabetes control is good. Not that diabetes is cured.
