  • Being a "fly on the wall" is what it's like to be a child actor remembers Michael McGreevey. He ought to know, his resume reads like a Who's Who of Hollywood and his behind-the-scenes revelations are both eye opening and very, very funny. Among his credits are several feature films with the likes of Kurt Russell, Richard Widmark and his "screen brother," Bill Mumy. Find out about McGreevey's summer vacation marrying Sally Field witnessing Robert Mitchum's amazing memory in a look back at the all star western, THE WAY WEST (1967), correcting a mistake made by Walt Disney, discovering that he could cry on cue while working on his Emmy Award winning Father's series, BLACK SADDLE (1959), and watching young Burt Reynolds get fired for an incident in their TV series RIVERBOAT (1959-61). All this and more from the talented actor/writer/producer McGreevey as he joins Rob Word and a look back for a special A WORD ON WESTERNS extended edit, from a September 18, 2018 interview at The Autry Museum.

So fantastic to hear this man talk about Richard Widmark who was one of my favourites and who is now all but forgotten. They don’t make them like that anymore.

    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:
Matthew Adam Garber (25 March 1956 - 13 June 1977) was a British child actor who played Michael Banks in the 1964 film Mary Poppins. He appeared in only two other films, The Three Lives of Thomasina and The Gnome-Mobile, all three times appearing alongside actress Karen Dotrice. All three appearances were in movies by Walt Disney Pictures.
Ten years after his retirement, Garber contracted hepatitis, which later affected his pancreas. He died of pancreatitis at the age of 21.

My Uncle Dale went to high school with Darren McGavin in Galt, Calif. My junior year in high school I started working weekends at Pollardville Ghost Town, a tourist attraction between Lodi & Stockton, Calif., as a cowboy/gunslinger/stunt-teen in the old west shows/gunfights we put on every hour on Main St.. Couldn't really call it work. It was way too much fun getting shot off the hotel balcony, stagecoach , or horse...plus getting paid a whopping $1.25 an hour. Absolutely instilled my deep love of westerns I still have to this day. Worked at the Ghost Town til joining the military in 1970. Earlier in 1970 landed a night job as food server & dishwasher on the set of the Moonshine War directed by Robert Altman (M*A*S*H the movie). Met Richard Widmark, Alan Alda, Patrick McGoohan, Will Geer (Grandpa Walton), and Lee Hazelwood in his first movie. Lee had several hit songs out with Nancy Sinatra (Some Velvet Mornin, Jackson ect). Great guy, but here he is a millionaire with hit records and he kept bumming cigarettes off me. He smoked like a chimney, we smoked the same brand, and every time he ran out of smokes he'd come looking for me...an 18 year old dish washer. Got to the point I tried to avoid the mooch.

I always liked Reynolds and consider him one of the most effective actors, whether in drama or comedy!
Also, a great talk-show guest; He and Don Rickles, btw, were the Tonight Show's best substitute hosts, always maintaining a balance of tact (yes, Rickles, too!!), intelligence, and well-chosen questions during interviews.

Some television shows were filmed in color as live short subjects for movies in foreign countries, but were broadcast on American television in black and white. There are color episodes of "The Cisco Kid" and "The Adventures of Superman" that were filmed in color for that reason.

Oh my goodness! Did he mention “Tombstone Territory”!? That’s my favorite TV Western & no one ever talks about it. I had no idea his father wrote some episodes. Very cool!
I would love a “Tombstone Territory” episode whenever you’re up & running again, Rob! I can’t wait to hear some stories about Pat Conway/Richard Eastham.
Has Jan Shepard ever mentioned being on it? She was fantastic as usual! Thanks again for another great episode! ❤️

Hi, MsCG. Good idea. It is such a fabulous western series. I just hung up with Jan Shepard checking up on her and her thoughts about TOMBSTONE TERRITORY. She didn't remember much about it (which is unusual) but did ask about Pat Conway who she enjoyed working with. Jan's credit list is amazing. She's been taking care of her husband Ray Boyle/Dirk London (of TV's WYATT EARP) and still has lots of stories to share with us when we're able to resume production.

@@AWordonWesterns thank you for asking her! She is a legend & so talented. I hope she is still doing well. I know her husband recently passed. Very sad.
I hope you can still do a Tombstone Territory episode some time in the future. I know a few guest stars are still with us like Angie Dickinson, Jan, Jack Hogan, Joyce Meadows, Jack Grinnage, Kathleen Nolan, Dyan Cannon, James Hong, Norma Moore, Jean Allison, Michael Forest & Scotty Morrow.
Thanks for keeping these westerns alive, Rob! We appreciate you!

Michael McGreevey will always be Richard Schuyler from the Disney trilogy of films he did with Kurt Russell. I love those films. I had seen Michael talk about Kurt Russell and he is still good friends with him. I believe he worked for him and Goldie in the past. He may still work for him.

Thanks but this combined three old episodes from when the shows were shorter. I wanted to re-edit and make it longer and to also include footage not previously shown, which I did. We had a last minute replacement running audio and he neglected to turn on my microphone during this interview!!!! I looped myself using my iPhone during editing. Then we shot 4 more interviews that day with other child actors, including a one on one with Mr Bill Mumy. Pretty exciting!

Great episode, Rob! I remember Michael appeared in a lot of scenes with Jack Lambert on Riverboat. Jack had a mustache on that show, but I saw him later without it, and he looked very menacing and was usually the bad guy. I enjoyed seeing Billy, as well as Michael, and used to have a bit of a crush on his Lost in Space sister (Angela Cartwright).

Lambert played Dum Dum in the original "The Killers", Burt Lancaster's first film. A classic Noir with Ava Gardner and Edmund O'Brien. Another guy like Lee Van Cleef whom he sorta resembled (same squinty eyes) and so was similarly type cast in similar villain roles.
