  • INTERVIEW Child actor Dennis Holmes surprised loyal LARAMIE fans when he suddenly replaced young Robert Crawford as a series regular. What happened? How was he received by viewers and the well established cast? And, at the age of 11, during a wild night with LARAMIE star Robert Fuller and some out of town fans, he found himself in a tattoo parlor! Find out how he survived and the enduring, and endearing, friendships that were formed during his time as a young contract player at Universal.
Before joining Robert Fuller and John Smith for the final two, color seasons of the hit TV western, Dennis Holmes had been under contract at 20th Century Fox Studios appearing in dozens of movies, including one with Oscar winner Susan Hayward, WOMAN OBSESSED, directed by Henry Hathaway and HOUND-DOG MAN, with Stuart Whitman and pop star Fabian, directed by another Hollywood legend, Don Siegel. Catch up with Hollywood lore and what it was like working during the heyday of the TV western as Dennis shares his memories during a zoom conversation with Rob Word for A WORD ON WESTERNS.

You hit the nail on the head! His personality did show through & his eyes drew me in to every scene. Robert Fuller spoke with his eyes, even when he wasn’t speaking. His eyes created the feel of the scene! They just don’t have good westerns anymore which is a crying shame & actors are not the same either. Glad they still show Laramie though. Love it!! ♥️👍

Who didn’t love Jess and Slim as kids. Totally cool guys and good stories. Forgot all about Spring Byington before she starred in December bride. What a Golden Era for cowboy shows and to enjoy them all as a s kid thinking they would be on forever. His comments about Robert Fuller were so endearing. And the Woman who played Ms Daisy. Such a loving and caring lady on the show. In Europe it is/was the same with KID STARS. There is just a hand full growing older and getting a normal life like the Dutch boy HEINTJE ( Singer and actor in his childhood in the Sixties ( later on becomming a well known Horse breeder in the Netherlands. or Jan Fedder ( also a German kid star in the Sixties later growing up to a well known actor playing everywhere from Stages over TV series up to movies.

Robert Crawford Jr was a very talented actor and I hear that it was largely due to his performance in the pilot episode that sold the series to the network, A year earlier Robert had been nominated for an Emmy (one of the youngest nominees ever!) for his role in the tv production "Child of Our Time". His brother Johnny was nominated the same year for his role on "The Rifleman"! Robert was written out of "Laramie" because he had a growth spurt and the producers thought he looked too old for the role. They did a full season with no kid and then came back for season three with Dennis. That's the true story!

I was born in 1957 in the UK, but we had all the westerns shown on either BBC or ITV, our two TV channels. I used to watch Laramie even though I would have been only about 4, 5 and 6 at the time, and I recall the young child seen in the interview here. I think the theme tune in Laramie was the pick of the bunch for me. I've never forgotten the melody.

I'd heard about Dennis and Bob reuniting on Finders of Lost Loves. Thanks for sharing this and remembering an awesome show that really does not get its due in today's world.

The Virginian episode brought me here. As a kid who grew up in the 50s, I really envied all of the child actors in those TV westerns. I looked a little like Johnny Crawford, and I remember the time my grandfather (a real cowboy) had to convince a guy at the Post Office that I was not Johnny.
Thanks for this video interview. Really enjoyed it! Dennis, thanks for sharing some of your experiences and memories.

Laramie was the show that when I saw in reruns, brought me to the great world of westerns.
John Smith and Robert Fuller were cool.
None of the "angry moody" acting of the other shows from that era.

Hi, Odee. A lot of work goes into putting these shows together. It's a "hobby" but for the last 8 years, I've been spending between 25-35 hours each week to post new weekly episodes. It's explained a bit more in a recent Spaghetti Westerns podcast I was on. Here's the link. I think it will answer you question with more detail and that you'll enjoy it. ua-cam.com/video/7Am1gDaKeag/v-deo.html

Rob. You hit a home run with this interview. I consider you the curator of our nastalgic imagination and our soul connection to our past with these people and interviews. This show Laramie , was my favorite besides gun smoke. I love the intro black and white drawing of the western city. I lived in pioneer town california from 1983 to 1985 when pappy and harriett allen owned it. I was the guitarist in the house band. Harriett allen was janis joplin's back vocal and tour vocalist all of her short career. And the stars I met there during that time was awesome. Laramie is just a great great show. Thank you for posting this interview.. I watch this show a lot to this day. Best wishes. And like james drury my birthday is April-18-1960. I just turned 61. LoL.. wow. And I live in Virginia. LoL. Wow again .lol..
