    PSA: Gen 1 does not have experience share. All it has is experience all, a nearly useless item that requires you catch 50 Pokemon before you can get it
    Having it in your inventory spreads your experience across your whole team, something I don't want to do because we had 2 dead weight Pokemon on the team
    Experience share would have been worth it for sure because I could keep Rapidash's level up. Experience all would spread the experience 4 ways, including giving half the experience to teammates we never had any reason to use
    Basically, if I used experience all then this challenge would have taken an entire week longer with no benefit

    13:56 - Clarification for the comments: There *IS* an EXP Share in Gen 1, it's just the worst. No held items in Gen 1 meant no way to focus who gets XP, so it's divided among all Pokemon in the party equally. That's *DIVIDED,* as in, when you have the item while using a full team all mons only get 1/6th the XP of the fainted opposing Pokemon. Thus making it 3 times less efficient than just switch training, especially since some Pokemon using HMs might need to be present.

    • @SuperZergMan
      @SuperZergMan 2 роки тому +11

      Slight correction: Exp All gives 50% to the participating pokemon and 50% divided among the remaining pokemon.
      (Assuming you only use one pokemon per KO, and none of your pokemon are fainted, because Exp All is a Gen 1 mechanic and therefore incredibly bugged.)

    • @jakerockznoodles
      @jakerockznoodles 2 роки тому +9

      The most irritating part is how long the text takes, as it tells you how much _every_ Pokémon gets _every_ time you faint anything, so in a full team it becomes utterly obnoxious. That reason alone is why I never used it after my first playthrough with it as a kid.

    I don't mean to be rude but it's hard to differentiate this from an Arcanine solo run since none of the other team members got any chance to be used. 13:55 - There is an EXP Share in Gen 1, however it's only obtainable from one of Professor Oak's Aides by Fuchsia City if you have data of at least 50 pokémon in your pokédex - meaning you have to have owned 50 different species.
    In Gen 1, the EXP Share is an "EXP All". It works by splitting the experience in half and then sharing it. One half is shared between all the pokémon that took part in that battle, and the other half is shared between your entire party.

    Gen 1 DOES have an Experience Share. You get it from an Aide for getting enough pokemon, and it sits in your bag distributing the Exp to everyone, like in later generations at the end of the fight. Looking at Bulbapedia, it's the Route 15 Aide in a Gate, as a reward for catching 50 Pokemon. And is apparently called EXP.ALL instead of EXP.SHARE.
    ...of course, it's also bugged, so you lose EXP if you switch pokemon, but it does still exist.

    • @stardf29
      @stardf29 2 роки тому +1

      The problem with the EXP ALL is that it cuts the EXP earned by the participating EXP in half, and then splits the other half of the EXP to the rest of the team. This means that in a full team, an individual Pokemon that doesn't participate gets 8.33% of the EXP of the fight, so it's very slow in general. It's not really like later generations at all, where the participating Pokemon get 100% of the EXP from the fight and others get 50%. And if you have HM users in your party (like most of these runs do), a good amount of EXP is "wasted" on them. Add on the aforementioned issue with switching Pokemon and it's just not very helpful.

Can't blame you, Arcanine is arguably the best fire type in the game and one of the strongest Pokemon all around in Gen 1. I'm actually surprised you didn't end up using Rapidash more. Between its high speed and Stomp combining for a deadly crit machine and Fire Spin in Gen I having the potential to basically lock and bleed your opponents to fainting (though I will admit that tactic can be tedious and unreliable), Rapidash has the ability to be an absolute beast when properly leveled. Still, one of the biggest things that works against it is that you get it so late in the game when you generally have an already established team and are running out of trainers to fight. This didn't go how I expected it to, but your vids are always a treat to watch and I look forward to them!
    P.S. EXP Share does exist in Gen 1. It's called 'EXP All' and you get it from Professor Oak's aide in that building between Fuschia and Route 15 if I remember right. You have to have Pokedex data for at least 50 Pokemon (which doesn't do you any good in your challenges) to get it, though.

    Between Blaine and Blue both having roar on their Arcanine, I wonder if Gamefreak intended for it to work in combat and it was just Gen 1 spaghetti code that messed that up.

    I apologize in advance for the length of this.
    There is an Exp. All in gen 1. It is the first iteration of modern shared exp. It was abandoned for the Exp. Share in gen 2. You can get the Exp. All from one of oak's aides in the gate east of Fushia (Koga's city) by having 50 pokemon registered in your Pokedex. This would ofcourse only be usable in multiple-pokemon runs.
    You could honestly just use a cheat to fill your dex, it would in no way impact the difficulty of the run except giving you access to flash, but you could always opt to enable the cheat when first arriving to Fushia.
    It works a bit differently than the later iterasions though. It splits your exp gained in two equal halves, the first part gets divided equally between all pokemon that participated in battle. The second half gets divided equally between all pokemon in your party. Yes that means participating pokemon gets exp from both halves.
    I'll do an example with your team. Let's say you didn't switch this battle. You gained 3600 exp. This gets divided in 2 equal halves of 1800 each. Arcanine gets one of those, and the other half is divided by four (your amount of team mates) into 450 × 4. This means Ponyta, Rapidash and Growlithe all get 450 exp each, while Arcanine gets 2250 exp (1800 + 450).
    This would have allowed you to still overlevel RK9 while keeping your team mates more useful when needed. I'm almost certain this gives your whole team full stat experience, but I'm unsure. The biggest downside to this would be all the text boxes popping up, but hey, that's what autofire buttons are for.
    I absolutely love your content so far MDB, I really hope you'll consider a Misty run in the future. Would be a great chance to try out the Exp. All, since Starmie is going to need a LOT of levels to get past lance. And staryu can help soften up difficult pokemon (at high enough level ofc) or just to reset stat drops/confusion

    (1:16) Aw, you're not allowing yourself to use Super Potions on your full-HP Pokémon?

    (4:15) Which fossil did you take? I hear "you were close" is good for the Pokémon Snap algorithm... except, my Pokémon was totally centered within the frame, Professor Oak!
    (6:18) The Gen. 1 miss glitch strikes again.

    (8:26) LOL, that Mah-Wile is hilarious!
    (11:57) Yes, please do that for the hahas.
    (12:34) Wow, 7 Roars in a row!
    (13:56) Well, there's the Exp. All item, but it's terrible in Gen. 1, and requires you to have 50 owned Pokémon registered in your Pokédex.
    (21:58) That Alakazam was clearly influenced by Blaine's AI. :P
    (22:14) Well, you could switch out to one of your other Pokémon to get rid of the Defense drops if you wanted, since this isn't a solo run.
    (22:44) And that's game!

    Run idea. Solo challenge run but your pokemon has poisoned status affliction the whole time. Taking damage every turn and damage whilst walking and having to conserve money to constantly heal throughout your journey. Not sure if it's even possible but would be entertaining to see.
    Would allow hacked potions and ether to use when you enter a pokecenter for 'free healing' without removing the poison and using up money. All other healing is from what you find/buy.

    Overlevel aside, Brock was easier than you expected because both of his pokemon have horrendous Special (and Special Defense in later gens), so basically any special attacking move besides Thundershock that you could get access to this early would make short work of him. Him potentially wasting time on Defense Curl when you don't attack with physical also helps.

  • @Teyeranitar

    Growlithe is in the slow leveling group because Arcanine was meant to be a psuedo-legendary when it was developed. That's why it has one of the highest non-legendary base stat totals in Gen 1, only losing to Gyarados and (oddly) Cloyster.

    I don't really get the point of this kind of challenges tbh. It was basically a solo run with Arcanine + you grinded the rest of Blaines team up to never use them.
    Would have been better if you grinded all of them to a reasonable level (instead of just overleveling Arcanine) and use funny strats like fire storm or use items to beat them.

  • @gokules

    So the reason for all the terrible movesets in Red and Blue is because trainers before Yellow didn't have special movesets. Their pokemon had the last 4 moves they would learn at that level. Gym Leaders and the Elite Four had one pokemon that the game grants a special move (for Blaine it's his Arcanine's Fire Blast) and the Champion has 2, but for all the other pokemon they're exactly the same as running into a wild pokemon at that level.

  • @andriypredmyrskyy7791

    Growlithe probably levels slowly because it was originally meant to be a legendary, as you could see within the first episode (or second, I don’t remember) where there was a tablet with the legendary birds and Arcanine, hinting towards its legendary roots. So the slow leveling is probably a remnant from those days.

    I don't like these "use their team" runs, where it's just a solo run with a powerful pokemon. What I would do is you must keep your highest and lowest pokemon within the same levels as the person who's team you're using. Meaning, you can't just ditch the rest of the team.

    13:55 But there is an Exp Share in Gen 1, called "Exp All". You get it from Oak's aide after catching 50 pokemon. Held items aren't a feature in Gen 1, but simply having it in the bag spreads out exp to the whole party.
    It is bugged, obviously, but it still gives everyone exp. And that bug only happens if more than 1 pokemon are in the fight (which isn't the case if you're just using Arcanine to KO stuff).

  • @zuloph

    I thought gen 1 did have an experience share (though it was more of an exp all in gen 1). I vaguely remember there being one in the gatehouse between Vermillion City and Lavender Town, the one to the left of the Snorlax as you're coming from Lavender Town. It's given to you by one of Oaks aids for catching a bunch of species of pokemon. I might be thinking of something added in FR/LG though. It's been a LOT of years since I played the original RBY
    Edit - I was tired when I wrote this so I forgot the "no items in battle, only pokeballs to catch others for HMs". I guess this means you probably won't catch enough pokemon to qualify for the exp share but at the time my brain just heard "no exp share in gen 1" and went with that lol

    Something you should know as you end the near of Pokemon Mystery Dungeon is that the majority of the content is Post-Game. The story makes up less than ⅓ of the game. So your Blue Rescue Team Let's Play would be missing a majority of the games content as well as further character exploration, Gengar particularly.
