Eevee and it's evolutions isn't very good anyways their first stab move they get is level 16 when the earliest level the gift eevee is 20. Eevee is better in the remakes due to coming at a lower level though not by much.
@@hawkticus_history_corner Stone aren't easily accessible before Kanto though and the move tutor is only available after you reach the hall of fame too. Only vaporeon is has a chance an accurate high powered move before the elite 4, but the only evolution stone can find are Sun Stones from the bug catching contest, or the Moon stone in Tohjo falls and the Ruins of Alph in Crystal. The only ways to find more stones is from mystery gift in GSC or certain trainers will rarely call to give you one in Crystal only.

Always remember Miltank has a higher base speed than Rayquaza. Ray's is 90 where as Miltanks is 100, I will never forget that from the Gamecube Pokemon games.
Fun fact for those who don’t know, you could just attach the mail to a different Pokémon then show it to the dude who needs to see it. He won’t take the Pokémon, and you still get the rewards. Some of you may have already done this, but I needed to get this out of my conscious.

If I remember correctly, one of the primary ways to get evolution stones were from people calling you and saying they found “weird stones” or something along those lines. I assume with Crystal they made the calls more frequent so that people could more easily get evolutionary stones. Only certain npcs would give you certain stones though so I doubt youngster Joey would ever give you anything that useful besides a Twitter shoutout

Crystal was the gen2 game I always played. After a several playthroughs, I would always collect the bike ASAP and then save before collecting the daycare egg. Then I'd keep collecting/hatching the egg until I hatched what I wanted (usually an Elekid!).
For future reference, happiness is based on number of steps, items used on the pokemon(ev items mainly), extra events for the specific game (the hair cut), and use in battle. However if your pokemon faints in battle, their happiness goes down. So if you're eevee faints a lot while grinding, it likely has terrible happiness.

Great challenge. That eevee taking ages to evolve takes me back to my first ever playthrough of gold back in the day. Ran around trying to get eevee to evolve for ages and it finally did into Umbreon after I beat Blaine in Kanto. Next week sounds like it’s got the potential to be interesting. Painful but interesting

I was really happy to see Smoochum come from the egg, but then the run had almost no Smoochum. Please do a Smoochum-only run sometime. Ideally in HeartGold or SoulSilver for maximumum Smoochuming.
Over the last few years I’ve always found myself coming back to watch these challenges along with keeping up with the newer ones. Thank you for doing them. They’re an absolute delight and so are you!
Unfortunately in Gen 2 it just doesn't have much to offer. Nk Fairy type, no ability, no Eviolite, over reliance on TM because it only learns Double Edge as a direct damage move through level up, only 405 base stats total... It's pretty limited without all the perks of later generations
@@DanielVictorDVZero Togetic isn’t THAT bad in Gen 2, it gets pretty good moves in Fire Blast and Psychic - moves that other special attackers would die for - and learns Charm and Safeguard to support it’s team and can shut down Curse users. It’s real only problem is it’s typing giving it no good S.T.A.B and it’s miserable Hp stat of 55.
@@oatmeal0 Togetic has the same base stat total as mid stage starters, only 40 speed, and over 25% of its stats are in special defense with only a base 55 HP. Its a slow, low HP, special tank with low stats, its not very good.
@@ZzShy Base stats arent everything. Look at Breloom, Ninjask, Smeargle and Pelipper, they have low base stats but do deceptively well in competitive play.

Pokemon (insert preferred game here) but each pokemon can only use the first move slot. you can know 4 moves like normal but before each battle you need to switch around your moves so the move you want to use is in the top left slot or the first slot.
Fun fact, this is one of the gift Pokemon only games where you don't need to catch any HM pokemon! (I've also done Yellow and Black so those can be done this was a well)

It should be quite easy... If you pick totodile. Between Feraligatr, an eeveelution (I think Flareon would be the best one here... Yeah, you heard me right, FLAREON), Togetic, Dratini and a Hitmon.
Neat list of odd egg mons, I'm hoping you get the "100%" one. Though the "pumped to do this run" one sounds cool too. Too bad "comments are good for the UA-cam algorithm" one isn't an option.
This is a super neat challenge! I've done a similar one called "Don't Catch 'Em At All", which simply prohibits catching pokemon (or trading with other games). This mostly plays out the same way, but also allows Game Corner pokemon and the occasional in-game trade.
Finally got around to starting my own challenge run recently after having watched so many of yours. Gen 1, single Krabby, evolving allowed, no items in battle, only HMs for attacking. (Evolving is allowed because it's my first challenge. One move slot is free and will be a buff/debuff move.) Made it so I started with Cut, then had to grind to L20 for Brock and squeaked by. Misty derped and only tackled.
For anyone from the future, the run went surprisingly well. A lone Krab with only HMs is quite the force to reckon with. Finished in the 60s with pre-Brock being the only grind and only had about six losses, most of which were to the Elites. RNG stuff.
I actually did this challenge a few months back, but didn't allow for any other pokemon for HMs. I can tell you that its ONLY possible in Crystal, not Gold or Silver, due to Dratini being the only gift pokemon that can use waterfall.
Walking 256 steps gifts one point of friendship. This is probably the fastest way to get a friendship evolution. Just bike back-and-forth and golden run city and check your friendship with the lady in the right side of the city near the bike shop. Also I’m so glad you chose to evolve Eevee into Espeon. Espeon is my favorite eeveelotion and is crazy strong. Once my Espeon had a stat of 202 special attack at level 60. Keep up the great videos!
Fun fact when i first played heart gold around a year ago i beat literally the entire game up until lances 3rd dragonite with just the cydaquil line (not a challenge i just didn't know about the red scale exp share trade)
The part about the clay UA-cam necklace honestly brought a tear to my eye; a lot of people (myself included) often forget that content creators are still just people like everyone else, and not just some entertainment machine. Hey MDB not sure if you'll ever see this comment but about Falkner then its implied in the Pokemon Adventures manga that gym leaders will pick from a variety of pokemon they have available based on the number of gym badges the challenger has. Cool little trivia which makes sense because I cant imagine someone from the other side of the region having to make his away over to the "first gym leader"
Speaking about how the first gym leader of each game is usually a big pushover, it'd be really cool if you could challenge the gyms in any order. The canon is that you CAN challenge them in any order and the gym leader just has to roughly match your power level, a few tweaks to movesets and some coding to adjust gym levels to player levels and it would offer a really unique open world feel to Pokemon while staying completely within the lore of the world.
I like listening to these while I do housework or yard work, and one of the few times I watch the video, I’m present for one of these funny editing bits.
I liked the stories you told about each content creator. The part about the necklace was particularly sweet. =3 Espeon is my absolute favorite Pokémon (followed by all the other Eeveelutions and Eevee itself) so I was happy to see that choice! Other than the silly editing error (which I actually found amusing), good stuff! And for what it's worth, I watch all of your outros. =)

I think the Pokemon Origins Anime Special explains the Faulkner low level thing. If I remember correctly, Brock asks red "How many badges do you have?" and when Red tells him none, Brock goes to get some specific pokeballs that are "noob level". So, I guess every gym leader has several teams depending on when you fight them. This would make sense if you were born on Cinnebar Isle or something.
What I did in the past on Gen 2 (haven't been able to replace the battery in my Silver Version Cartridge so haven't played it in a while). Anyway I would breed Shuckie and also breed Kenya then do the returning them to the proper trainers while raising the bred ones as my own.

I’m currently playing through Crystal now. I had no idea that you could get a gift Eevee in general, and this early to boot. I’ve been using Growlithe as my fire type. You know the Pokémon who gets Flamethrower at Level 50 in GSC and whose evolved form doesn’t learn Flamethrower at all. It’s fun
For team runs you should ignore the HM rule. Teams will always win the fights, the question is if you can do all the required traversing with them. I can even see this working with an asterisk like "Can only catch HM pokemon if none of the chosen pokemon can learn a specific mandatory HM"
I am fairly sure you can beat Whitney easily with Croconaw by spamming Rage. As long as Clefairy uses Double slap, each slap will increase Rage power, and make Miltank a 2 to 3 shot easily.
Falkner is basically a cakewalk if you start with Totodile. Jrose11 demonstrated that with no optional battles (including wild Pokemon) you can solo that gym just with Totodile. What's even funnier is that Totodile is so low level that it doesn't know Water gun. You just spam Rage and Falkner just goes down before you do. That's not the case with Cyndaquil and Chikorita. Cyndaquil will be wrecked by Mud slap (Falkner will prioritize super effective moves), and Chikorita just gets beat up by birds normally.

Great video! I did this as my first Pokémon challenge about a year ago. My final team ended up being Typhlosion, Fearow, Vaporeon, Clefable, Hitmonlee, and Dragonite.
Just curious did you forget about grabbing the Dig TM from the national park? It's on the other side or the fence at the bottom left side and from the looks of it you missed getting the Earthquake TM from Victory Road.
I think to balance things out, MDB, you should try and do a team run at least 1 video a month. This way you can have a bit of variety to separate from the consecutive solo runs.
I remember doing this run. I counted Game Corner poekon as gifts, and started with Cindaquil. so I made the gift Eevee a Vaporeon so I could keep water HMs on the team. Also kept Togetic on the squad because my other Egg was an Igglybuff and it's honestly just worse. And yes, my solution to Clair and Lance was Aurora Beam.
I totally did this! It's fun, it gives you that "Pokemon protagonist" feeling since all your Pokemon feel plot relevant. (I did cheat and bought a cubone from the game corner)
An additional comment because it helps with the algorithm- Where I am we also skipped spring entirely (Alaska), so we essentially went from random splotches of snow to 80f/27c!
No joke, you naming totodile mushrooms is the funniest but coolest thing in the world. So there's a game called dot hack that has these little animated creatures that say their name whenever you approach them. (It's the food that you feed the pets) One of them says there name mushroom, another is mandargara and cordyceps. I use all three of those voice lines for notification sounds on my phone. So not only can I proxy totodile's name as my own in a way, but it's hilarious hearing you say his name and having to look at my phone like "Wait did I get a message, no that didn't sound right" lol
I really like this wiht you shouting out really small youtubers. Its hard to find original gaming content nowadays. And this is a really nice way to discover small channels :)

Evolving early doesn't matter for a Red Mage. They get the same stat gains whether they're a Mage or a Wizard. 😏

I think the calls are set, but if you erase every number except there's. then when someone would call you, it's always them

Gold and Silver were awful in this regard because you could only get one of each Fire, Water, Thunder, and Leaf Stone and that was in the post-game.

Magby, Elekid, and Smoochum aren't friendship evolutions. They all evolve at 30 which you more than likely found out later in your run.

Chansey evolves into Blissey with High Friendship. Blissey is a Generation 2 Pokémon.

I started this exact challenge in Crystal a few months ago, this inspired me to actually finish it.
I have already binged the Nancy Drew Let's play twice. One was fairly recently or I would probably binge it again. It's a really good let's play. But I still have many of your other let's plays to still watch.

He most likely won’t evolve them I’ve noticed with his gift runs he tends to keep the Pokémon as is unless it evolves when traded or something lol
It should be quite easy... If you pick totodile. Between Feraligatr, an eeveelution (I think Flareon would be the best one here... Yeah, you heard me right, FLAREON), Togetic, Dratini and a Hitmon.
Pokemon Champion Russell is my favorite gag. Little does Russell know, gen 3 runs have an even more brutal rock user right away in early game
Neat list of odd egg mons, I'm hoping you get the "100%" one. Though the "pumped to do this run" one sounds cool too. Too bad "comments are good for the UA-cam algorithm" one isn't an option.
Maybe you should use Youngster Joey's team for a run in a Pokémon Challenge! I hear he's got a super cool Rattata!
This is a super neat challenge! I've done a similar one called "Don't Catch 'Em At All", which simply prohibits catching pokemon (or trading with other games). This mostly plays out the same way, but also allows Game Corner pokemon and the occasional in-game trade.
Finally got around to starting my own challenge run recently after having watched so many of yours.
Gen 1, single Krabby, evolving allowed, no items in battle, only HMs for attacking.
(Evolving is allowed because it's my first challenge. One move slot is free and will be a buff/debuff move.)
Made it so I started with Cut, then had to grind to L20 for Brock and squeaked by. Misty derped and only tackled.
For anyone from the future, the run went surprisingly well.
A lone Krab with only HMs is quite the force to reckon with.
Finished in the 60s with pre-Brock being the only grind and only had about six losses, most of which were to the Elites. RNG stuff.
I actually did this challenge a few months back, but didn't allow for any other pokemon for HMs. I can tell you that its ONLY possible in Crystal, not Gold or Silver, due to Dratini being the only gift pokemon that can use waterfall.
Walking 256 steps gifts one point of friendship. This is probably the fastest way to get a friendship evolution. Just bike back-and-forth and golden run city and check your friendship with the lady in the right side of the city near the bike shop. Also I’m so glad you chose to evolve Eevee into Espeon. Espeon is my favorite eeveelotion and is crazy strong. Once my Espeon had a stat of 202 special attack at level 60. Keep up the great videos!

Fun fact when i first played heart gold around a year ago i beat literally the entire game up until lances 3rd dragonite with just the cydaquil line (not a challenge i just didn't know about the red scale exp share trade)

Hey MDB not sure if you'll ever see this comment but about Falkner then its implied in the Pokemon Adventures manga that gym leaders will pick from a variety of pokemon they have available based on the number of gym badges the challenger has. Cool little trivia which makes sense because I cant imagine someone from the other side of the region having to make his away over to the "first gym leader"
Speaking about how the first gym leader of each game is usually a big pushover, it'd be really cool if you could challenge the gyms in any order. The canon is that you CAN challenge them in any order and the gym leader just has to roughly match your power level, a few tweaks to movesets and some coding to adjust gym levels to player levels and it would offer a really unique open world feel to Pokemon while staying completely within the lore of the world.
I was going to argue about Espeon's being really strong, then I googled it and it has 25 more base stats than Alakazam. So good work

I think you should add “set mode” to your rule set for future challenges. It honestly adds a lot of difficulty to battles.
6:34 You still keep Kenya after you deliver the Mail. You’d expect the guy to keep the Pokémon, but nope.
I can confirm, Crusader King play throughs are funny as heck and I didn’t know anything about the game when I started watching MDB’s CK3 vods.
I like listening to these while I do housework or yard work, and one of the few times I watch the video, I’m present for one of these funny editing bits.

Espeon is my absolute favorite Pokémon (followed by all the other Eeveelutions and Eevee itself) so I was happy to see that choice!

I think next time you run a Totodile, you should probably look into using Rage. Unlike in Gen 1, Gen 2's Rage is actually good!

I think the Pokemon Origins Anime Special explains the Faulkner low level thing. If I remember correctly, Brock asks red "How many badges do you have?" and when Red tells him none, Brock goes to get some specific pokeballs that are "noob level". So, I guess every gym leader has several teams depending on when you fight them. This would make sense if you were born on Cinnebar Isle or something.
What I did in the past on Gen 2 (haven't been able to replace the battery in my Silver Version Cartridge so haven't played it in a while).
Anyway I would breed Shuckie and also breed Kenya then do the returning them to the proper trainers while raising the bred ones as my own.

I’m currently playing through Crystal now. I had no idea that you could get a gift Eevee in general, and this early to boot. I’ve been using Growlithe as my fire type. You know the Pokémon who gets Flamethrower at Level 50 in GSC and whose evolved form doesn’t learn Flamethrower at all.

For team runs you should ignore the HM rule. Teams will always win the fights, the question is if you can do all the required traversing with them.
I can even see this working with an asterisk like "Can only catch HM pokemon if none of the chosen pokemon can learn a specific mandatory HM"
I am fairly sure you can beat Whitney easily with Croconaw by spamming Rage. As long as Clefairy uses Double slap, each slap will increase Rage power, and make Miltank a 2 to 3 shot easily.
Falkner is basically a cakewalk if you start with Totodile. Jrose11 demonstrated that with no optional battles (including wild Pokemon) you can solo that gym just with Totodile. What's even funnier is that Totodile is so low level that it doesn't know Water gun. You just spam Rage and Falkner just goes down before you do.
That's not the case with Cyndaquil and Chikorita. Cyndaquil will be wrecked by Mud slap (Falkner will prioritize super effective moves), and Chikorita just gets beat up by birds normally.

Great video! I did this as my first Pokémon challenge about a year ago. My final team ended up being Typhlosion, Fearow, Vaporeon, Clefable, Hitmonlee, and Dragonite.
Just curious did you forget about grabbing the Dig TM from the national park? It's on the other side or the fence at the bottom left side and from the looks of it you missed getting the Earthquake TM from Victory Road.
Yeah, MDB skips/ignores tms often. Feraligatr should have earthquake, Espeon should have shadow ball, etc

I think to balance things out, MDB, you should try and do a team run at least 1 video a month. This way you can have a bit of variety to separate from the consecutive solo runs.

I remember doing this run. I counted Game Corner poekon as gifts, and started with Cindaquil. so I made the gift Eevee a Vaporeon so I could keep water HMs on the team. Also kept Togetic on the squad because my other Egg was an Igglybuff and it's honestly just worse.
And yes, my solution to Clair and Lance was Aurora Beam.

No joke, you naming totodile mushrooms is the funniest but coolest thing in the world.
So there's a game called dot hack that has these little animated creatures that say their name whenever you approach them. (It's the food that you feed the pets)
One of them says there name mushroom, another is mandargara and cordyceps.
I use all three of those voice lines for notification sounds on my phone. So not only can I proxy totodile's name as my own in a way, but it's hilarious hearing you say his name and having to look at my phone like "Wait did I get a message, no that didn't sound right" lol

I remember feraligatr was the first pokemon from the starters that remained in my party beating the elite four, that thing was strong.
You can also use rage against Whitney's miltank while it is rolling out to bost your attack. Saved me a lot as a kid.
