    Extra Information and clarifications.
0:15 I just use the flags of the Mexican Republic for the liberals and the flag of the First Mexican Empire for the conservatives as they at least somewhat represent what the two factions where fighting for. Although keep in mind that during the Reform War the flag of the Republic was used by both conservatives and the liberals.
2:10 Since he was seen as a military hero even though he had many loses under his belt, he was very good at covering these up.
3:49 OK technically it wasn't a full default on all the Mexican debt, but I am not an economist nor have the time to explain debt restructuring.
In layman's terms, Britain, France and Spain weren't going to get payed the full amount owned to them.
4:41 It is technically not a "national holiday" in Mexico (but it was in the past) but it is still very much celebrated today. But in the modern era it has gain a more different symbolism specially in the US Mexican community.
5:03 Ok it wasn't as strait forward as this and there was more military maneuvering by both sides and more battles than just one but again I am talking about the grand scheme of things.
5:10 Some have argued "no country in the Americas has subsequently been invaded by any other European military force" or that "had Mexico not defeated the French in Puebla on May 5, 1862, France would have gone to the aid of the Confederate States of America".
But these are very much speculations and I don't think valid arguments can be made for either of them.
5:30 It is important to understand that the conservatives weren't united in their support for installing a French backed European monarch.
5:38 The maps of the Mexican Empire control in Mexico may be wrong. I used (sources in the script) as my sources all of which differ slightly, there are also other websites showing yet another different control of the Mexican empire (ibid.). It is hard to say to what extent and where the Mexican Empire exerted control over the population as it was a mess of roaming gorillas and dissidents on top of the official forces of the Liberals and the Empire.
6:13 He prominently spoke out against the harsh treatment of the minorities within the Austrian Empire specially after the the brutal putting down of rebellions in the middle of the 19th century.
8:50 However he didn't abolish Peonage completely (although it is speculated that he had plans to, after the war).
9:16 And also to raise money for the Mexican peasants in Mexico city living in poverty.
10:01 It is also said that the Indios preferred having a king because they still had strong believes preferring kings over a republic harkening back to the pre-colonial era.
10:27 Charro is a certain kind of person so to be completely accurate he wasn't wearing a charro but a charro style clothing.
11:44 He didn't want to enact the decree but was convinced by his conservative supporters it was the only way to win the war.
13:37 There's a lot of contradiction of what Maximilian said and when on his last day.
Some sources says that Maximilian's last words where these.
"May my blood seal up the misfortunes of my adopted country. Long live Mexico.".
Other sources add to that this "I die in a just cause, that of the independence and liberty of Mexico. May my blood seal up the misfortunes of my adopted country. Long live Mexico."
Yet another source mentions this "May my blood be the last to be spilled as a sacrifice for the country. And if it did require some of its sons, may it be for the good of the Nation and never to betray it."
Yet another account says this “what a glorious day! I have always wanted to die on just such a day".
While other accounts say these words where said by Maximilian before the execution and aren't his last words.
Lastly a romanticized version of his last words exist which most certainly where not his last words.
"Mexicans! Persons of my class and origin are appointed by god, either for the happiness of nations, or to be martyrs. Called by you, I came for the good of the country. I came not in my ambition, but I came animated by the best desires for the future of my adopted country; for that of the brave men to whom, before death, I express my gratitude for their sacrifice. Mexicans! May my blood be the last that is shed, and may it regenerate this unhappy country!"
14:56 Arguments against this usually say that the liberals had to take the jobs as they where the only good paying job in a civil war ridden country.
15:00 Sebastián Lerdo was the president of Mexico after Juarez.

Maximilian is the ideal "monarch of people", sadly the realistic is much cruel. His last words made me cry the first time I read it.

    • @MLaserHistory
      @MLaserHistory  4 роки тому +139

As I said at the end it's kind of contested what his last words really where, I go in to more detail in the description.
After I went through the sources my opinion now is that actually the last words stated in this video and on Wikipedia aren't probably the true last words, the way they came to us just seems a bit too fishy. The most likely candidate for the true last words again in my opinion is this "I die in a just cause, that of the independence and liberty of Mexico. May my blood seal up the misfortunes of my adopted country. Long live Mexico." as it is given to us by a coroner present at the execution, but again as it often times is with these things you can't really tell anything for sure.
I think Maximilian was a good monarch in the idealistic kind of way but sometimes such monarchs can ironically be bad monarchs for just that reason. Sometimes you need a more authoritative and dominant monarch specially for such a divided country like Mexico, which Maximilian really wasn't. But than again under slightly different circumstances he could have been the perfect monarch for Mexico, transitioning it in to a sort of New World Constitutional monarchy which wouldn't be only an amazing sight to see in the new world but a quite stable and prosperous country given the geography of Mexico and it's resources.
As you can see I could go on for days speculating about the pros and cons of such a Maximilian monarchy but in the end it's all just speculation anyways and who knows what could have really happened. But as the end of the video suggest I do think over all it could have been a positive thing for Mexico.

@@MLaserHistory Yes, thanks for the detailed description, always love the detail you provided in your video. :) I just want to show my sympathy to Maximilian's humanist ideal. Kindness and benevolence are not necessarily the best trait a monarch should have especially in a divided nation like Mexico. Machiavelli would probably give a 0 out of 10 to Maximilian's rule... but still, I always feel very sorry to Maximilian's tragedy.

I always felt bad for Maximilian. Imagine how different history could potentially be if something happened to young Franz Joseph and Maximilian became the Emperor of Austria. Add to that Frederick III not dying on cancer and we would have two liberally-minded emperors. That is assuming that the German Empire would be even formed (maybe not in the same form) in that timeline with Maximilian already being a pretty large "butterfly", flapping his metaphorical wings and effecting the unification of Germany in ways that are hard to predict.
BTW this is shaping up to be a great series about Mexican history.

Hard to say. Besides, Napoleon made him emperor by threatening and/blackmailing the mexican people to vote for him. Also, he used him in attempt to expand his empire. When you think about it, Maximilian was the victim. "Maximilian, you will always be a great emperor to me". LONG LIVE THE EMPEROR!

Thank you for this awesome content. As a mexican myself, I would say this is a nice summary of the 'Guerra de Reforma' period. I consider 'Maximiliano de Habsburgo' a hero, an enlightened liberal that was ahead of his time. Juarez won the war because he was a friend of Lincoln, both 33 ° freemasons with similar ideologies, and the US supported Juarez presidency with money, supplies and guns.
Sadly Juarez didn't want to get to an agreement with Maximilian, although both were liberals with simmilar ideals, actualy Maximilian was more liberal than the liberal party and Juarez; a gobernment with both of them and without civil war would have been excelent for Mexico.
Also we mexicans DO NOT celebrate 'cinco de mayo', thats a chicano thing. In Puebla state we have some military parades, thats all. Americans celebrate it, we don't.

He was actually conviced by the conservative Mexicans after years of looking for support for a monarchical project on Europe, and they finally reached after their defeat on the War of the Reform.
Of course Napoleon III wanted to restore French glory and to stop American expansionism on the Americas, but without the initial support of the Conservative Party, plans for an invasion may have been very different.

I do think though, that if the 2nd Mexican Empire was to survive, and the 2nd French Empire collapsed, that POSSIBLY Maximillian would make an agreement with the USA to at least leave his country alone or at most, even strike up some economic, military, and/or political ties, as Mexico was no longer a French puppet, and Maximillian was a very liberal ruler. It's possible the two could work out an agreement, and Mexico would be reformed as a modernized, prosperous, and stable state under Maximillian, with some aid from the US. I would imagine that when Maximillian finally dies (Most likely around the time of WW1), Mexico would transition into a Republic, but would still be very liberal, and still allied with the US. And since the socialist PRI government likely doesn't rise in this timeline, Mexico could very well still be a prosperous, fully democratic, and stable society, kind of like North America's Chile. but to make more strong point i should talk about constitutional monarchies in republics as may you know you choosing a head of state for every 4 years majority of the time they dont represent all of the country only like half of the voters so naturally they are more biased towards to their casual voters or donators etc which creates easy way to corruption but in constitutional monarchies you have an head of state will rule to day he or she will retire or die and he or she is educated to rule from his or her very childhood so majority of the time they arent incapable so that creates stability for the realm and he or she must be politically neutral all the time so that creates a unity in a sense as well and not to mention her or his job majority of the time ceremonial despite them holding the top job/position in the country which also creates a scenario that politicians has no goal to be at the top so their ego in check and they bow to queen or king every week which also keeps their ego further in chechk they know they cant get to the top
btw sorry for my bad English@@jeck988

Cinco de Mayo is not really a major Holiday in Mexico, it is remembered and celebrated, but not a major one; it is more of a holiday in the US than in Mexico.
The reason why the Battle of Puebla stood out in comparison to other battles in the war was because no one expected Mexico to defeat the French army, considered the best in the world at the time, and it was so unexpected that even the generals, such as Ignacio Zaragoza and Porfirio Diaz couldn't believe it. Zaragoza informed President Juarez of the victory, so he declared the day a national holiday. A year later, the French had a siege in Puebla, who was under the command of General Jesus Gonzalez Ortega because Zaragoza had died of typhoid fever in the year between the two battles, so when the 1 year anniversary, the Mexican soldiers in the battle took a moment to remember the battle from the year before and the fallen general.
TL;DR: No one expected Mexico to beat France in the battle, so the date became a symbol of hope for Mexicans.
As to why Cinco de Mayo became a bigger holiday in the US than in Mexico, there are theories, such as people from California (many of whom were Mexicans) took the news of the Mexican victory as a celebration; another theory suggests that Porfirio Diaz (who ended up becoming dictator) promoted the day more than any other because of his role on it; the last theory is that American beer companies took the chance to have a new holiday to sell beer in the US.
BTW, amazing job on the video, very well done and informative.

At first it felt weird that a Hapsburg prince would be out on the Mexican throne but it makes sense in a messed up historical medieval legalist way.
In case you didn’t know which I was suppressed as well to learn the Hapsburg family didn’t just rule Austria for centuries they were actually the royal house of Spain (weird asf) while today’s Spanish royal family are a branch of the bourbon dynasty of France you know the pens that lost their heads in the revolution. Anyway it was during the Hapsburg era in Spain that Mexico was part of the Spanish empire so as Stated before it could be argued that Maximilian as a Hapsburg did have a legitimate claim to rule Mexico than the Spanish Bourbons .

I'd love to see you do some videos on Prehispanic Mexican history. There's, sadly, very little content about it on youtube that's not low effort, exclusively focused on the Aztec and Maya, or filled with tons of errors; even though there's 3000 years of prehispanic complex societies in the region, dozens of other civilizations beyond those two, etc . The only people who have really done a fantastic job are Kings & Generals and Invicta, whom I helped with his Aztec rank video; so there's a real untapped pool of potential content there (There's also Aztlan historian, but his channel as of now is tiny). There's also more sources then you might think: the Spanish book burnings were devastating, but a decent amount was re-recorded; at least for specific time periods/cultures: there's been ENTIRE books written about single, specific Mesoamerican historical figures, for example, like "Tlacaelel Remembered", "In The Realm of 8-Deer", and "The Allure of Nezahualcoyotl", etc.

@The Elven Biker You make it seem like Mexico is so back tracked and unstable like if it was Somalia, or Yemen. Mexico is the 15-11 economy out of 195 countries in the world. That's pretty fucking good. The problem is distribution. (But tell me what country doesn't have economic inequality? Even in The U.S the rich are insanely rich and take 80-90% of the wealth.)
Obviously corruption is a big reason why Mexico hasn't become what it really can be. The biggest corporate being corruption. ( We can also argue that The U.S had much to do with that, look up operation fast n furious or that huge JP Morgan ship that was raided which was full of drugs. This all kinds of other shady shit it's neighbors to the north do.)..But yeah at least Mexico's corruption is transperant, and we can all see it, unlike many so called good countries.
As for the cartel violence, yeah it's a sad reality, it's a double edged sword that even U.S citizens are to blame, after all their appetite for these drugs is big. If you've ever been or already know, you'd realize that the violence tends to happen in the rural areas and unpopulated places in Mexico. You can't forget that Mexico is huge, rank #15/195. If you go to it's large cities or developed towns you'd realize that it's just as advanced as many so called first world countries. The point is that yeah Mexico has many problems, as does every country, but believe me it is a million times better than than most other countries in the world.

Actually, there were 3 combats in Puebla. The battle of May 5, 1862 was not irrelevant. This delayed the invasion by more than 10 months, giving the Liberal government time to prepare for resistance. Even more impressive was the combat for the same city of Puebla the following year, from March 16 to May 17, 1863. 60 days in which the city withstood the superior firepower of the French army. A Chassepot rifle had an effective range of 1,600 meters. A Brown Bess of the Mexican army could reach 250 meters. With artillery there were similar differences. For this reason, the defender, Jesús González Ortega, resisted inside the city to force the French into hand-to-hand combat, so that the Zouaves faced the Mexican machetes once more. Battalions from all over the country gathered in the city, forging a national spirit of resistance. 21 thousand defenders against 35 thousand besiegers. Although the French captured the city, many of the Mexican officers managed to break through and escape to fight again. In my opinion, the siege of Puebla in 1863 is the most epic combat of the Mexican army during the 19th century and it is unknown by many academics. Dwarf any combat of the War with the United States. After the withdrawal of most of the French army, the third combat of Puebla took place, on April 2, 1867, with Porfirio Díaz defeating Maximilian's army.

4:36 Just to point it out, 5 de Mayo is not really celebrated in México, only in Puebla where the battle took place and for some reason in the US. In Mexico it's just commemorated in schools. I can go as far as saying that May 10th (mother's day) is more celebrated than May 5th.
I don't know why americans got the idea that 5 de Mayo is a celebrated date in México, I remember hearing in the news since when I was a kid that 5 de Mayo was even confused as our Independence day, which is on 16 de Septiembre (September 16th).
I'm just mentioning this 'cause you pointed it out as being kinda of a random battle to have a holiday around. I mean, you could even go to EN Wikipedia and just read the first three paragraphs of the 5 de Mayo article to realize that is more of a US holiday to celebrate Mexican-American culture than an actual Mexican celebrated holiday.

*El 5 de Mayo* became popular thanks to Porfirio Díaz, the actual capable general whom defeated the French. He was forced to not pursue the retreating French force by Zaragoza (which was a huge mistake) ... well the reason why the holiday is celebrated is that Porfilio Diaz later became the president and later dictator of Mexico, and used his victory as a political token, declaring it a holiday in Mexico.

I don't know what the long term outcome would have been since a strong and prosperous Mexico is not in the US's best interest, probably not today and definitely not in the 19th Century. Besides, a Habsburg Emperor in Mexico would probably have lead to Mexico entering WWI on Austria's side and them losing more territory to the US in 1918. They might have even joined WWII on Germany's side to look for payback and who knows what might have become of Mexico after 1945.
