  • Warming up with colour swatching. This is also a follow up post regarding the colours I was using last week for the onion sketches.
I used several violets and purples for the onions so here is the colour list.
    1. Cobalt Blue Violet (must have in my palette)
    2. Cobalt Violet Deep
    3. Imperial Purple
    4. MoonGlow
    5. Quin Magenta
Some of the purples are difficult to mix when I am on-location so I tend to use the ready made ones. And one of the negatives with mixing your purples/violets is losing the transparency of the wash because you are doubling the pigment load.
Hope you are inspired to play with your paint!

Great demonstration. Enjoyed your video very much. I found you on instagram through daniel smith and your daniel smith palette. I realized watching your story this morning that you were here on youtube. I have several of the purples you swatched and found your onion painting energizing. I will probably binge watch more videos. Happy to have found you. Thanks Paul!!

Thank you so much for posting! I have seen some of your other UA-cam and Instagram videos (they are terrific) but I love in this video hearing your thoughts and explanations during the demo. Given that it will be challenging to ever take a class with you directly, I find these kind of instructional videos with your commentary to be “pure gold.” I could easily watch and listen for hours. Have you considered a SkillShare or Blueprint type class where you take people through your process in depth with step by step examples (the way some of your peers in the urban sketching community have done)? I would gladly pay for the opportunity to learn in this fashion. Anyhow, thank you for your generosity Paul Wang.

I feel exactly the same way as Nathan Johnson! I felt pure joy watching this - the use of the pencil with the wet paint and the thoughts and explanations! Thank you!

I'm fascinated by how you use your pencil in the wet wash to incise lines and create edges. Lovely! What is your palette with the deep mixing wells? I've not seen one like that.

Hi Paul, interesting colors. I have a question, what kind of fountain pen did you write here?
