As this is a long video, here are some time stamps so you can click through to individual pages. Card 1 Yellows, Oranges, Reds, Pinks: 4:43 Card 2 Purples, Blues and Greens: 16:31 Card 3 A few greens and Earth Colours: 27:59 Card 4: Darks, Durochrome, Interference, Pearlescent and Iridescent: 39:32
I wish I'd found this video sooner, it's so helpful. Thank you Becky. I've screen shot the four charts and already I've added some colors to my buy list and switched some others out based on the colors being cooler or warmer than I expected. I'm starting with the basic warm and cool red, yellow and blues. I found the blues easily but there are too many yellow and red choices lol. I love 4 greens so I guess I'll have 4. 🤷♀ That just leaves a couple of earthy browns and I'm leaning towards at least one that granulates. Plus now I've seen it I might add pearlescent shimmer too for just that little bit of sparkle on the water in seascapes or a bit of dew on a plant. I know this video is a couple of years old and you probably have black paper now but I noticed that Daniel Smith makes colored watercolor grounds to prep paper, boards or canvas with. It comes in transparent, white, pearlescent white, iridescent gold and black. The black would show off those sparkly paints.
I'm so glad this video is still helpful! It's always so hard to pick a palette from scratch; I spent many, many hours trying to figure out which colours to choose first. I do indeed have some black paper now; Stonehenge have a gorgeous cotton paper pad and it works perfectly. I've used white ground before, and it's not my favourite surface but I'd be curious to try the black out.
Thank you so much for this! I have recently began using DS watercolours and I am obsessed with them. I have too many colours in my radar and this will help me to (maybe) shorten the list. I absolutely adore their earth colours! I paint mostly birds, insects, mushrooms, and earth tones are incredibly useful on their own or in mixes. Quin burnt orange and scarlet mixed with different blues make the most rich, gorgeous greys and browns. Natural Sienna Monte Amiata and French Ochre mixed with a tiny bit of Dioxazine Purple result in fabulous beiges. Yesterday I mixed all my yellows with purple and it is mind blowing how different the results are considering that many yellows (normals and ochres) are on their own. Now I have to mix my other near 50 pigments with one another. 🫣😂
Patty- I really appreciate your swatching all of those colors. What an excellent reference these cards can be when choosing colors to buy. I had never heard of gerichromes before. I learned something new. I am attracted to metallic and glitter colors so those last ones you swatched on black paper were great. I don't own any Daniel Smith paints so this was very helpful. Thank you.
Oh great, I'm glad my video was useful! It is always helpful to see everything swatched out and being able to choose colours from the entire collection. 🙂
The pearlescent shimmer is as wonderful as it seems. I found a sale and bought a second tube, even though I'd barely started the first. It really creates a wonderful but subtle shimmer for florals.
Thanks for sharing your take on the DS dot cards, it's fun to hear about what you've used and which ones you're considering for your palette. FYI, DS probably uses the Nickel Titanate Yellow to make the colors more opaque like the original cadmium colors. I got some samples of the new DS cad colors when they came out about 15 years ago (DS eliminated cadmium and manganese from their line because of fears that some might escape into the nearby waterways and waste system--heavy metals are difficult for municipal water systems to filter out, so they can get dumped into waterways and ground water) and rarely use them unless doing portraits. But they are lovely colors.
That's really interesting to know some of their history, thank you for sharing! I love heavy metal colours (and music, lol) but they definitely wouldn't be very environmentally friendly. Safer, less toxic versions are better for us all.
My green apatite genuine is a totally different color than this dot chart…it’s so beautiful and dries with a beautiful separation of green and brown! Great for eye colors! Don’t write it off cause of this dot color! It’s amazing!
There are so many amazing colours to choose from, and I remember it being so hard to pick the first ones for my set. I spent hours, possibly days, dithering over them! 😂
i have just bought the full dot card set. 271 paints plus. 5 cards now december 2023. i have painted 1 painting and will definately get several more 😀🥰
I use Ult Red. It's pasty and not very saturated. I do like it though. Mine seems more pinkish that it looks in the video - almost like cobalt violet. I also use Napth Maroon and recommend it - a slightly of muted Bordeaux, but flexible and beautiful.
You are very lucky at the size of the dots you received. I purchased the same item and my dots were seriously half the size. Just a thought to keep In mind if you haven’t yet got these dot sheets, you might be surprised like me.
I did rummage through to find the best looking one, lol, so you have a very true point there! It's annoying when the dots aren't generous enough to get a good swatch.
Loved hearing your thoughts and watching you do the dot chart. I have it too, and some Daniel Smith paint, and the only one I don't agree on is the Green Apatite. I don't think the dot chart does it justice. Its honestly not olive, though it can be, its like a chameleon. If anything its like a sap green on steroids that granulates. I painted a picture book using it for trees and I managed to get so many tones from it that it was almost absurd. I would say: Give it another chance (away from the dot chart, like buy a small tube). Having said that, we all like different colours and we can't all like the same, but yeah, I just feel the dot chart didn't do t justice somehow
@@BeckyTregear Do you know Steve Mitchel from "The Mind of Watercolour" youtube channel?. Daniel Smith got him to do a 12 pan set for them and Green Apatite was one of his choices. It was because of that I bought it back in the day, though what I paint is so different from his work. I kept it in my drawer for forever without really using it. Until the day I decided to use it for an illustration full of trees, and O-M-G... I felt like I had discovered some secret lol. Its now on my top 10! So yes, please try it one day and tell me or us what you think!
@@BeckyTregear Forgive me Becky as I'm leaving yet another comment about this, its just I've been doing some swatching and you've come to my mind a few times. I'd like to add that one particular thing about this paint is that it separates on the palette. The greens that come out of it are sort of "unexpected", like its hiding pigments you wouldn't expect. It has as well almost a neon undertone which is very peculiar but I honestly love. I will now shut up and not mention this again lol
They are very pricey! I haven't bought any new tubes for ages because I can't justify the cost. I'm glad I bought them a few years ago before everything in the world got ridiculously expensive. 😭
For duochrome colours finetec flip flop colours are so much better as they switch between two different colours depending on the angle of viewing. No matter which way she moved the Daniel Smith ones they only reflected one colour really.
Really enjoyed this! Is it me, or do all the yellows look alike? I have 4 yellows on my palette: nickel azo yellow PY150, and the three Hansa Yellows. I'm also interested in getting the Pearlecent Shimmer - it's so neat; I'll find some use for it! I think Ill get the next, updated form of the dot sheet, whenever it comes out. Thanks, Becky! ;:
A lot of the yellows are very similar, haha! I think it is because Daniel Smith has so many pigments in their range. Makes it very hard to choose, lol. I picked up the pearlescent shimmer and it's really, really pretty. I am so behind on making videos for my Daniel Smith paints! Oh and I am not sure if you saw my recent Mystery Mail video...I opened the package you sent, and thank you SO much for everything, I love the brushes and paints a lot! ❤️💜
i haven't watched any from the dot card after the first few, i'm actually using them to paint with , also on ebay a woman is selling sample sets high end , all the big ones i have bought 8 sets so far
You can get quite a lot of paintings out of the dots, so they're quite useful for that and it saves having to buy an entire tube. Yes I have seen some pretty cool looking dot cards in various places. ❤
So THAT's what it's called: OPERA PINK... I've seen it on paintings and wanted it, now I'll finally go get it. Love the video!
It's definitely a really pretty colour! Sometimes it's called opera rose, depending on the brand. 🌹

Btw To clean your brush cleaner you can use the turners acryl palette cleaner. A little goes a long way and gets out most of the paint stains

That was fun. I just watched this back to back with the W&N dot cards!
That’s a whole lotta dots! 😂

That deep scarlet is beautiful and is now in my virtual cart. 😇 Thanks for sharing this swatch-a-thon!
I'm glad it helped and inspired you! Thank you for watching :-)
Most helpful video! Thank you!
That was so fun to watch!
Thank you, I'm glad! 😁
36:23 and yet that is one I really like 😂 I like that it’ll just blend into the background but offer some depth

You're right in that some paints really do work better when they're fresher, and not from a tiny dot! I'll have to give Green Apatite another chance.

Love this swatch of gorgeous colors !😍
They were so much fun to paint out, and they all look so pretty side by side 💜
Amazing video. Thank you for such a thorough and interesting job.
Thank you, I hope it was useful!
I can’t afford Daniel smith 😭 just came to see the pretty colors and your bubbly personality ❤

Thank you 😊💖
Those irodescent colours o.O so beautiful! Ohh, did you get the Mijello pure pigment paints? It's been a bit of time hopefully you received them
Alas, not yet! Postage here is annoyingly slow; I hope they show soon, and I'll let you know when they do. 🙂
Super helpful thanks so much.
I'm glad it helped! ☺️

Did my swatch cards along side this video, even though it was sped up, I just went faster... 😅
Haha I think I had it at double speed. 😂
I have the dot cards..lol
This was amazing to watch.
Did you know they also sell the watercolors in stick form as well.
Thank you! I have a few sticks somewhere in the studio....I need to find them again! 💜
What’s everyone’s big problem with German Raw Umber LOL Am I the only one who actually like that color LMAO
Don't worry, plenty of others do too! 😂
Clean it with olive oil
