VESTAS Sailrocket 2. "The magic mile" world record*...

  • Two days after finally smashing the Outright world speed sailing record, the Vestas Sailrocket 2 team decide to tackle the 'Nautical Mile' world record which was held by the mighty 'Hydroptere'. It was always going to be an interesting challenge for the VSR2 team as the speed course that they sail on in Walvis Bay, Namibia is defined by a beach which is exactly 1.04 miles long. This requires them to launch the boat out in more exposed waters and try and get up to as high a speed as they dare in rough water before they hit the start of the mile. At the end of the course they also fire out into rough water and have to bring the boat to a stop. It's hard on the boat. The beach is not straight but has a slight curve in it . The mile is measured by TRIMBLE GPS equipment in a straight line so pilot Paul Larsen needs to balance between sailing in close to the beach for the flat water... and sailing the straightest and hence shortest distance between A and B. In this run, with winds that averaged just under 25 knots, The team smashed not only the nautical mile record* by over 5 knots averaging over 55.3 knots... but also raised their own 'Outright speed' record* to 59.38 knots over 500 meters hitting a peak speed of 64.78 knots (74.55 mph, 120 kph). For Larsen it was the perfect payback for 10 years chasing 'the perfect reach'. Speed sailing had paid him back in full and a dream was realised.
    VSR2 performed exactly as predicted by the Sailrocket design team of Malcolm Barnsley and Chris Hornzee Jones at AEROTROPE. The spec for the boat was to be able to hit 65 knots in 26 knots of wind in order to average around 60 knots.
    * All records subject to WSSRC ratification

    I've grown up sailing all my life. Sailed a number of times in a Hobie Trifoiler.
    This boat is even more amazing--in that it's more 'engineered' To get an appreciation for this, one must start with learning to sail. The basics. Sail a small sunfish, then sail a 20', then a catamaran, finally, Windsurfing...then you may appreciate this machine. To ride on this is many times more exciting than a fast powerboat/jetboat--because there is no motor, but all the while a beauty all it's own.

    Anyone who has ever been on the water knows that this is really fast. And yes it pretty much goes in a straight line. But, the speed and the thrill, and seeing your dream in real life, how many people do that, not many. That is why there are the few who do and the many who just watch. By the way all speed records are in a straight line, airplanes, cars, and pretty much everything else. That has got to be so much fun!

      Not all are in a straight line!
      Sailplanes can go transonic speeds with something called “dynamic soaring” and if you look up a video you’ll see it’s very much not in a straight line :)

    Fantastic effort by the team! Amazing video too! I remember the beginnings of Malcolm's design efforts, almost thirty years ago at Portland Speed Week, and this performance now is the reward for an awful lot of persistence! We used to dream about the "forty knot sailboat", and now the sixty knot version is reality! On behalf of all the old, mad, lunatic fringe of Speed Sailors from the Johnnie Walker Speed Week days, I offer hearty congratulations to the Vesta team!

    Reinforcing all the physics of faster than wind travel. In spite of having taken physics classes, it's still a bit magical to me how much faster than the wind a craft can travel. Land based wind powered are crazy fast as they don't have to deal with drag from water

    • @sassyblondel
      @sassyblondel 6 років тому +10

      Imagine a boat sailing across the wind at 12 mph in a 12 mph wind. The apparent wind hitting the boat is 17 mph. Now the boat sheets into the 17 mph wind and presto, faster than the wind travel. These guys are doing over twice the wind speed but they use dark magic and evil alchemy.

    • @sailRichard
      @sailRichard 6 років тому +8

      Ice boats can reach about 140 mph in 40 mph wind speed. It's all about what is called apparent wind. As the boat speeds up, the apparent wind increases. This assumes the boat is sailing more or less toward the wind, as opposed to in a following wind.

    • @sailRichard
      @sailRichard 6 років тому +2

      Apparent wind also refers to wind direction on a sailboat, which changes as the boat moves in relation to the actual wind direction

    • @benevolentdictator2315
      @benevolentdictator2315 6 років тому +6

      I thinks this craft is able due Bernoulli's principle...the vacuum effect on the bowed surface of the sail literally sucks the craft and is counter balanced by the pilot hull. As the craft speed increases, so does the apparent wind speed, adding to the vacuum effect and increasing the speed. In this case the speed in limited by the distance between the 2 hulls as eventually the pull force of the sail will exceed the counter weight of the pilot hull. The hulls appear to be on hydrofoils that lift the hulls out of the water, there by reducing the water drag to about 100th of a normal catamaran as the surfaces of the hulls in contact with the water is significantly reduced.

    Which is why they travel to Namibia and sail in Walvis Bay. The off shore breeze and relatively sheltered waters allow this boat to display it's true tallents in very tight conditions - when skippered by a guy like Paul Larson.
    What you are seeing is in now way "normal" it is extraordinary. Ten years of effort in the making - this is a very special demonstration of developed technologies.

    no they are done for the season - the boat needs to be strengthened and the foils tweaked to bust 70 - and I hope they enjoy the rest they have earned and are funded to come back and fully explore what this boat and design is capable of. 65 is what she was set up to do and she delivered and more. Prudence dictates that they take a break. The venue is so tight for this speed - very good work on everyone's part.

    The offset of the hull is designed to do exactly what you have said. Remember, despite sailing in 25 knot average winds, the apparent wind generated by Sailrocket's forward speed becomes about 70 knots, at roughly the apparent wind angle that the hull is set to the float pods. You can be sure that the the design engineers didn't make so obvious an error as to mistakenly set the pods askew to the hull.

    Their foils peak at close to 70 knots and can be further modified to deliver higher speed. The boat scantlings are at their limits around the peak of 68 knots so them being prudent dictates that the boat has to be strengthened to go further and this season is at an end. You are correct - the kites have a theoretical limit of 60 knots - which is exactly why they went to 65.45 knots on the 500 meter record. This boat and concept can be set up to break 70 knots. Awesome development work.

    remarkable that these boats "sail" more than twice the ambient wind speed. this shows again that the wind is not pushing the sail but creating a pressure differential between the leading and trailing faces of the sail. how that pressure diff. is exploited depends on the weight and geometry of the boat. the force created on the sail is transferred to the boat very efficiently, driving it well in excess of the wind speed generating the force in the first place.

    • @MrJdsenior
      @MrJdsenior 8 років тому

      That pressure differential is always the case on any fast sailboat, that's what cambering battens are for in a nonrigid sail. A rigid sail (wing) like this, though, has a much better L/D than a sail. Even on a Hobie in a fairly stiff wind you can feel the power come way up as you start get faster.

  • @maximeloiseau8050
    @maximeloiseau8050 6 років тому

    For those who believe a sail boat cannot go faster than the wind, notice that race catamarans, in a down wind do not go with the wind backwards.
    They prefer to run with an angle sufficient to strongly increase their speed. So, if the road is longer, in fact, as their speed is much higher, they go faster than the wind in its direction.

    @Sleman Abu Salim, yes, to a point. Some of the previous records this boat broke were set by sailboard in a specially constructed trench in France relying on 50+knot winds. The "level playing field" is really the limit of winds available in the world, and they're available to anyone willing to travel to them. The remarkable thing about thisboat is that it set the record in winds around half the speed of the 50+knot winds I mentioned above.

    Amazing! Can't wait to see the next generation craft. Would that be a double fin front and back so when the craft is flying at speed, nothing but the two fins touches the water? Would double airfoils be necessary to keep the force balanced? Will the next generation vestas have a tail like an airplane instead and still use a single fin? Quite exciting to watch the next frontier in speed sailing manifest. I'm already wondering what new design lies ahead.
