- It is always an honor to be able to compete in the Luderitzspeedchallenge. Last time, I didn't take my GoPro on those fastest runs as I wanted to concentrate on my runs. This year I took my brandnew GoPro Hero10black.
The result is absolutely fantastic. The quality of this cam is insanely good. So clear, so sharp - just perfect.
At first we had some beautiful training and testing runs in Shearwater Bay near Diaz Point. That spot is the fastest, the most reliable and most beautiful open water spot in the world at the moment. It's just about 10km away from the canal. Twan did over 100 km/h on each single day over there. Perfect to test and tune the new Neil Pryde RS EVO Speed 2023 5.1 sqm.

Straight after we had some more nice testing days on the canal before the wind kicked in with over 50 knots on the 18th of November.
We hit the 100 km/h barrier already in lower windspeeds and we knew that this will be a good day to break records, maybe the Nationals, maybe the World Record of Antoine Albeau (53.27 knots on 500m). I took my cam on my helmet to capture those stunning moments. I hope you enjoy as much as I did in every single run.
Hans Kreisel was in World Record mode, pushing hard and he could break the Dutch National Record of Twan Verseput already in the beginning. He wanted more, I could see it in his eyes.
There was also Björn Dunkerbeck pushing for his 100 km/h goal and he got it pretty early on that day too. He managed to go over 103 km/h!
At the end we could all reach World Record speeds of over 53 knots on 250 meters but we couldn't manage to hold that speed on the 500 meter.
The wind was too inconsistent so we always slowed down for the rest of our runs.
There are at least 6 or 7 guys now who can break the record if the wind is kicking in even stronger. That day will come - next year for sure!

No it isn't. Age is in the muscles, bones, joints, internal organs and brain. And I can prove it.
It looks very dangerous to have your body hanging over the hard edge of the canal, with no helmet. Total trust in the equipment and your skills...respect!

Do keep the Zen ! Water is like a brickwall if in thouble just let go and disconnect your harness asap from the boom and then go from there to another go !!
The sum total is goes something like this : Your weight , m2 of the sail relating to the windspeed Then when it all comes together there will be ZEN !

Love your movies Andy your love of the sport really comes through in the movies you make. I find the helmet cam view to be the most immersive for the Luderitz footage. It really gives a sensation of speed.

Sick video, Andy! Very well showed that sensation of ultra fast speed sailing on the edge and limit of human and gear abilities. It was nerve wrecking when you looked at the camera an nearly hit the sand bags. Keep pushing. Your videos are very inspiring!

Impressive, yes. But unless I'm missing something, the advertised 102.35 km/h topspeed was an instantaneous reading, not an official average over a 500 meter course. According to the Ludderitz speed challenge results from 2021, the top official speed was 97.57 km/h, or 52.68 knots/hr. Fast, yes.
But for perspective, Paul Larsen's Sail Rocket II team absolutely smashed the world speed sailing record in 2012 with an astonishing speed of 65.45 knots, or 121.21 kph, beating the old world speed record by just shy of 10knots. An unutterably magnificent achievement. At that time Paul Larsen stamped the speed record so high that as to put it out of reach for an astounding 10 year...at least. There's now a team (see: "SP-80") chasing a new record with a fantastically out-of-the box approach, gunning for 80 knots in 2023. Best of luck to them.

It looks like they always start with spin out. I guess once you’re up to speed with a relatively big sail for the conditions you’re going to want a small fin. I couldn’t imagine gaining such speed while going sideways!

Train your body at the gymnase sometimes with specific exercices, and i think you can explose the world record. You gear seems to be good, nothing can't stop you, come on!

Off the planet ,great stuff ,I don't know what to say ,speeds equalling the record and almost the outright recorded ,incredible ,do they say you have the GPS or outright world record ,my speeds are 53.7 knots or 99.3km/h average at speed trial event and police radar speeds of 102 km/h and 104 km/h radar checking 4km/h slow ,incredible to watch and Verry inspirational ,kind regards Perry from australia

Le canal n'est pas assez long , la phase de lancement ne permet pas d'attendre la vitesse moyenne avant la ligne de départ. Il faut être puissant sur l'accéleration pour réaliser une performance?
oui, c est juste. Il faut accelere junsqu'a 52-53 knots avant la line normalement. Il faux plus de vent, ca sera perfect.
