I wanna let anyone who wasn't around for the Pat Speedrun Arc know that nothing was off the table. 1 PM streams? 1 AM streams? Streams before a scheduled stream? We went mask off during that period. It was insane. But Pat reached top 100 so it was worth it.

This is what rekindled my love for all of Kingdom Hearts after a messy breakup with the girl who introduced me to the series drained all of my interest in anything I picked up during the years I spent with her. I just want to thank you for the UA-cam notification that made me care about this series again and for being a great UA-camr to fall asleep to every night.
Every time you talk about using parts of the level design to avoid fights or get places faster it makes me appreciate KH1's level design all the more. Man I love Fruity Pebbles.
Honestly this is kind of one of my favourite videos of yours after just watching it once, and I don't even know how to explain why other than it just feels like a genuine journey, a bit like the fun uncle telling you a wild but generally realistically ending story. At least I guess, I don't really have uncles like that. Either way, stellar video as usual, very reminiscent of the Level 1 guide but in a whole new light, I really enjoyed it

I just realized why time is such a theme in Neverland. The world is predicated on the fact that no one ages, meaning time is standing still there. So Hook is susceptible to Stop because he’s living in a place where time is constantly stopped. Also, you having to hit Big Ben is a push to start moving time forward again. Maybe I’m reading too much into it, but I find this theory very cool. Edit: The push statue is janky because it’s on a track. So you have to start pushing it from the ledge of the track, then fall off that ledge, then keep pushing it. The weird glitchy pushes may be because you didn’t get Sora’s animations reset before trying to push again. That’s just a theory though.
This was so intresting to watch as someone who was (most of the time) up at 3am watching along to these speedruns, although this definitely made me realize how little I actually paid attention to what was happening lol. Also these vods just have a special place in my heart for being the first streams I ever actively chatted in, so it's great to see them all in a video format 💙
Gave the speedrun a try myself for the first time today. Granted, it was to accomplish the trophy as part of platinuming the game for PS4, and I realized pretty quickly I could easily fit within that trophy time, so I had a couple of hours I could've easily cut out from doing Olympus Coliseum, Atlantica, and Monstro, as well as the first three tournaments, picking up treasures along the way, etc. But this video will help me figure out how to do better.
I’ve never really been interested in doing or watching a speed-run myself, but I was completely locked into every minute of this video! Learning new things about KH1 is my favorite past-time. And Pat’s commentary is alright too, I guess 😉

Thank you for inspiring me to try this category and give speed running a chance. I just finished my first “run” just learning the route watching your videos as a quick guide. I got a 4:46 would would have me at like 236th, but I didn’t get lost for at least an hour. Want to do a few more practice runs and hopefully post to a leaderboard at some point. Thank you for this!
I’m finally doing it. I’m finally attempting my first Kingdom Hearts speed run. I’m here for moral support and advice 😁 I too, don’t normally speed run, but I love this game so much. It’s “the” game for me. My favorite game as a child. It changed my life when I was 11, got it for Christmas 2002. A bit cliché but idc 🎉😘

Loved the video Pat! I used to watch KH2 speedruns while playing it. Used the strats I could figure out and got good enough to 100% in around 10 hours! Excluding Lingering Will of course, I could never beat him without exploits

Not a speedrunner, but a little tip that could save you time on the menu is when equipping items: don't click "exchange" click "take out". That pops you right into your stock
Hi, Pat, a KH1 speedrunner here, glad to hear you enjoyed your dip into the fray! It's always nice to hear when people enjoy a game enough to run it. Cool video, I just wanted to touch on a few comments within it. -Definitely faster to do the Trinity glitch into the Waterway after Guard Armor. That's one cool trick that saves time that we get on English compared to the JP version, which we kinda need since JP saves ~45s on us due to faster text box loads. -You're absolutely right that Powerwilds are kinda nasty agents of timeloss. Sometimes they line up for a clean Blizz kill, sometimes they don't. It is what it is. -The method you use to fight Clayton is pretty solid! Because of how turbo-stacked your Strength is on Beginner from all the Power Ups, your finisher and non-finisher hits deal pretty much the same damage, but your finishers usually launch him across the arena, so 1-2s are preferable to control his positioning. -Waterfall Cavern really is the true final boss of Deep Jungle, man. The camera really is its own enemy there. -Yeah, Agrabah can be pretty grueling. Two major mob fights and four whole bosses. Woof. At least on Beginner, you're blasting through with a roided-out Sora, which makes the bosses pretty consistent. On LV1, it's really easy for fights like Pot Centipede and Cave of Wonders to devolve into desperate attempts to stay alive, let alone beat the boss. Personally, I always feel a sense of relief whenever my LV1 runs make it to Jafar, because at least those have more consistency than the previous two boss battles. -Speaking of Jafar, one thing that can help facilitate the one-cycle is in doing the same 1-2 strat you did on Clayton. Your non-finishers and finishers do equivalent damage, and it's much faster to do a series of 1-2s than having to jump for long enough to be airborne for a full air combo. Once you've ensured he won't fly away after making the magic bubble, try the 1-2s out, it should make the 1-cycle way less dependent on party damage. -Riku's a wild card when it comes to Parasite Cage 1. If you mess up an air combo, his moves can prevent the Cage from falling out of a stagger loop. If you're in the middle of one, though, he'll mess up the rhythm of your stagger loop and you'll have to pick it up again. Your mileage may vary. -Rare Truffles are indeed a blessing in more ways than one! The game actually loads that area faster if the Truffles spawn in, AND you don't get a bit of timeloss from Air Soldiers bopping you on the noggin while you're climbing to Parasite Cage 2. Love those 'shrooms. -Couple reasons as to why Simba doesn't have the same efficacy against the pre-Hook Heartless you fight on the ship deck. For one, damage storage doesn't work against enemies with less than 300 HP. Aside from the Battleship, every single mob has less health. For another, Simba's default damage calculation formula is dependent on the amount of MP Sora has and the amount of charges you can build for the roar. You need 7 MP to kill Pirates with a 3-charge roar, and unfortunately, the only way to get that on LV1 without hacking the game is by having the 3 base MP you get from picking the Staff at Dive to the Heart + 2 MP from the Spellbinder Keyblade + 1 MP from the Magic Armlet (which you have to go out of your way to synth) + 1 MP from the Ray of Light (which, thankfully, you already get from beating Pot Centipede). EXP Zero's a funny thing when it comes to magic. -Again, very impressed with the intuition here on the guess for why we put on Fairy Harp when we do! At 8 MP, you have the potential to do 2 more instances of Ars after the 1 you burn to clear the Heartless on the roof of the Gizmo Shop. If you've got 5 MP and enough charge meter to cover at least 3 sections of the MP meter, you're ballin'. -Jumping to the far left of the building on the movement up to the Gizmo Shop roof isn't the only way you can hack it, a runner buddy of mine named Majoris239 changed my life when he told me you can just pull up on the stick when Sora's doing his ledge grab flip animation and apparently that's enough to stop Sora's tiptoes from crossing the spawn trigger zone for the Heartless. Game's funny. -The Linked Worlds Arch Behemoth strat is actually a mix of both Gravity and Ars. Since he doesn't have the same resistance to Gravity that the Hollow Bastion Behemoth does, you can basically keep chucking Gravities until you have just enough MP for an Ars, and then let 'er rip. Goofy's MP Gift refills you afterwards, so you can just bust out another one lickety-split. Thanks for sharing your journey, and hope the people give you a reason to return!
As someone that's tried to do some speed runs but never recorded any (I would still not be in the top 100 anyways), KH1 beginner is pretty fun just for the knowledge needed for it. Even if you don't plan to hit the ground running with it, I'd encourage anyone to give it a shot at least once or twice. I know I'd eventually like to record an attempt and also work on doing KH2 runs someday. Great video though Pat, I will try some of these things next time.
A note for those willing to experiment with multiple platforms, the PS versions of KH1 are the only ones where Simple and Clean is unskippable. If you are on PC, Xbox One, or are a masocist with the Switch Cloud versions, you may skip Utada at your leisure
I remember a few years ago I said I'd consider becoming a KH speedrunner if the game came out on Switch, since I'd be able to practice on the go Little did I know that a monkey's paw had curled a finger shortly after
I was gonna try to get back into the top 100 since it’s been three years since i’ve attempted an any% beginner run, but it turns out my last PB landed me in 80th place. I kind of assumed I fell further than that. Maybe this video will get me to start running again anyway though, who knows
when i fight the main core and final; ansem in my casual playthru I land in the core and summon tink to keep my health full, probbaly not for speed runs but can keep a causal player alive longer
I think it would be worth it to do the Coliseum long enough to get thunder. It's op af in the later levels and can one shot loads of heartless in one go. It takes two shots to kill the more powerful heartless like the invisibles and dark balls.
Thunder *is* good but going to OC would require flying there in the Gummi Ship at least once, which is gonna waste more time than what you could potentially make up by using Thunder throughout the game
On the note of the barrel at the beginning, as an amateur speedrunner myself, I would recommend not restarting over every little mistake like that. It seems like messing that up only loses a few seconds at most, when looking at your PB's, you're shaving off minutes with each run.
Let me tell you something, I haven't even begun to peak. And when I do peak, you'll know. Because I'm gonna peak so hard that everybody in Traverse Town's gonna feel it.
Ugh, pat! I know why you couldn't get the barrel. It's a very VERY simple solution, and I'm surprised you missed this step! But every speedrunner knows that to get the barrel first try is that you first need to watch Steamboat Willie while wearing Minnie ears (HAS to have a sparkly purple bow, it doesn't work if you forget to get specifically a sparkly purple bow one BUT there are rumors that a sparkly pink bow will still allow it) while drawing your own dog as Goofy and singing the Mickey Mouse March! I'm so sorry nobody ever bestowed this wisdom upon you, but I hope in the future this manages to save you that second the barrel steals from you!

I think it would be worth it to do the Coliseum long enough to get thunder. It's op af in the later levels and can one shot loads of heartless in one go. It takes two shots to kill the more powerful heartless like the invisibles and dark balls.
Thunder *is* good but going to OC would require flying there in the Gummi Ship at least once, which is gonna waste more time than what you could potentially make up by using Thunder throughout the game

On the note of the barrel at the beginning, as an amateur speedrunner myself, I would recommend not restarting over every little mistake like that. It seems like messing that up only loses a few seconds at most, when looking at your PB's, you're shaving off minutes with each run.
Speed running is always the last bastion of game knowledge… youve peaked my friend

Ugh, pat! I know why you couldn't get the barrel. It's a very VERY simple solution, and I'm surprised you missed this step! But every speedrunner knows that to get the barrel first try is that you first need to watch Steamboat Willie while wearing Minnie ears (HAS to have a sparkly purple bow, it doesn't work if you forget to get specifically a sparkly purple bow one BUT there are rumors that a sparkly pink bow will still allow it) while drawing your own dog as Goofy and singing the Mickey Mouse March!
