starting to think you like kh1 pat
you really get me
Just a lil bit
Who not? I like kh1 and re com more then others
Nah he definitely loves kh2
Please don't assume things with no basis
Can confirm, “Aye aye Captain Sora” + the little salute is, in fact, fucking adorable.
Science says so
I read this in Morgan Freeman's voice
15:06 - 15:19
BRUH that had me on the fucking floor
The dramatic “swoosh” sound effect being used for tigger drunkenly swaying to the sides followed by the famous KH1 character blank stare and that frame 1 rocket powered jump off the side of the screen brought me to tears
Puppy #13 is the one that follows you around in the Dalmatian House dining room! I once checked back at the house before opening every new Dalmatian box in order to narrow it down. Following Puppy appeared after opening the 13,14,15 box in Wonderland. In the BradyGames Official Strategy Guide, there's a numbered sticker sheet of every single puppy as they appear in the house, so by looking at the backgrounds/poses of 13,14,15, you can tell that #13 is the one on the orange carpet of the dining room, always facing your camera!
yeah 13 is called pepper :)
and i love that the devs went out their way to make some of them really interact. instead of if being just a collection thing. like bbs or kh3 did
MORE KH1 FACTS!? At this point, I wouldn’t be surprised if the cure to cancer was hidden in KH1 this entire time
Bravo Nomura
Something to do with Paopu fruits, I’d bet.
why did i read this as more kh1 facists 😭
nah he would put that in an japanese exclusive arcade game cutscene

Okay that chimney thing is genuinely so friggin cool. I miss the interactive nature of this game so much. In comparison, the other games feel rather cold. Not bad in any way, but there’s just a genuine warmth with KH1 that I can’t find with the other games. And I’d say it’s nostalgia but I noticed that lack of warmth with the other games even as a kid.
They really did put more thought in the minor things back in KH1. Maybe because they were more focused on the story elements in the next go-around? KH1 has a pretty straightforward story (save the worlds from impending doom) but thrives on platforming and puzzles, maybe because back then platforming games such as Super Mario World and Zelda were all the rage. In contrast, I think games like KH2 have a more intricate story with more elements at play, but at the cost of exploration and platforming being wittled down. Both games have their strong suits, while KH1 definitely has more charm and attention to detail, I personally think KH2's warmth comes from being more invested in the characters such as Roxas and Sora
Agreed, the level of interactivity in the KH1 worlds really sold the vibe of visiting the worlds of your favorite Disney movies and fucking around like it's Disneyland. KH2 gets a lot of flack for its very utilitarian maps being mostly set-dressing but I like they brought some of the fun back in KH3, mostly just because the tech was better and the worlds could spread their legs more but there's a lot of attention to detail. Toy Box really brought back that KH1 magic when I first played it.
@@ExaltedUriel yes. I'd say Kingdom Hearts 3 has the best of both worlds: great character moments, plus the feeling of world exploration. There was just more thought being put into it overall. The sense of wonderwent of plopping into your favorite Disney world was brought back even though not as bewildering as the first game
Honestly it feels like a feature of older games. Even back in the Snes days, games like Chrono trigger had painstaking attention and care to detail. Nowadays it just feels like everything changed, make games get them out asap for a quick buck, etc.
@@kademaxwell6025 that’s fair. It almost feels like what a game lacked in graphics, it made up for in charm.
4:32
You say this about a series that became defined by people eating ice cream on a clock tower, and a guy who loved a specific flavour of it so much that he made it the password to his supercomputer that houses a data simulation of an entire world
4:32 "Which, I think is the only example of KH characters having specific food preferences."
Ansem the Wise: *Seasalt Ice Cream eating stops.*
I can't believe there were still so many things to point out! I gotta say Pat you continue to make me appreciate KH1 more and more. What an incredible amount of detail for an experimental game they had no idea would become the series it is now.
Oh yeah, another weird thing in KH1 that we noticed on my roommate's blind playthrough is that Goofy seemed to...forlornly keep his eyes closed after the first gorilla encounter in the treehouse? We have it recorded, I'll have to find it and send it to you. It was either a really bizarre detail or a very obscure glitch, but it's stuck in my head ever since.
The 6pm painting 'time flies' is the iconic shot of Castle Cornelia from the original FF, I feel like no one recognises it bc i don't think many people are familiar with it.
Always wondered if there was any references with those paintings.
Also, as a chronic KH completionist ive known about the "Master Synthesist" event for years, and personally? I FULLY believe it to be a reference to when you become a "Master Pianist" after practising on all eight pianos in FFV. You dont get anything except a new song for the Bard job. I like to think it was a deliberate ff5 reference since that was the first SQ game Nomura ever worked on
Theres one bubble text you missed: if you try to syntethise a second Ultima Weapon, the mogu will get angry and says "After all the work we put in the first one". I can't guarantee that is the same dialog since I played the game in Spanish
It’s a miracle that the team was given enough time for this much polish and attention to detail when so many games are rushed and released unfinished.
You know it's funny how different two playthroughs can be. When I was in deep jungle the FIRST thing I did was talk to any NPC looking for a hint, because I did not want to spend 30 minutes walking around looking for apes. I thought the game expected you to talk to Jane there
Just a potential future idea if you want I haven’t seen: a top 10 (or a ranking whatever you want) of all of the cups, tourneys etc in the kh series (ex. Each cup in kh1 and 2, the struggle battles, the data battles, etc) whatever you want haha
The map used by Captain Hook in this game actually matches the one that is eventually torn up by him in Days, and then put back together and used as a reference point by Roxas. I guess they’re checking the same spots for treasure again?
“Wow, another one? I guess we’re just gonna go over the more general well known stuff he didn’t mention before, I’ll probably known most of th….”
26/30 were brand new to me. You’ve blown my mind about the game I thought I new best yet again! Especially those destiny island lines, those are all amazing
Cool thing I just learned, you actually can do the experiment in Deep Jungle twice depending on how you get the recipe cards. If you only get Research Notes 1 and 2, you'll get the standard Potion for Ether experiment. If you then pick up Research Note 3, you can do the experiment again and get the two Ethers for one Potion. So far as I have seen, you can't ever do the experiment again, so finding a weird way to do it twice was cool!
This one is kinda unknown but if you choose to give Donald or Goofy a potion in the armored guard boss fight after they "drop in" to help before officially being introduced.
You can see their names to choose from like normal but Sora will only say "HERE" instead of their names since he doesn't know them but the player does from cutscenes
It's not much but it's a attention to detail that I love
I’ve been hyperfixating hard and borderline binging your channel and watching all the UnchainedX cutscenes has had me finally go back and finish my KHIII play through I was mid way into before life stuff distracted me. Bless
Hope you are enjoying the jorney ^_^
@@opheliastanghelleeriksen8053 I have been, i just finished Port Royal and it’s wonderful
12:19 Honestly, after hearing that the residents of Halloween Town learned about Heartless from a book, I can't help but think Oogie got that book- probably a crash course for Heartless things- and forgot about it one day and left it just lying around somewhere for anyone to just stroll on up and be like "Ooh, what dat?"
Idk if you have covered this one but I found out about by complete accident while playing kh1, if you get to the part in atlantica right after the cutscene were ursula meets ariel you can find the shark in different rooms then the abandoned ship( I managed to see him the undersea valley and gorge) but if you see the cutscene were ursula gets the trident this gets removed. Hopefully that was interesting
I know most games don't add these little variants in dialogue or enviorments for budget and time reasons, but they're my favorite.
Psychonauts does it super well too.
regular pat has slowly transformed me from diehard kh2 fan to accepting that kh2 really struggles in the charm department (and a few others) compared to kh1. thank you pat
Did you know that doing all gummi missions presents a different splash completion screen? The game basically tells you to get gud if you didnt do them on proud. Photos of the screen are super rare since it's something obviously next to no one ever does.
This game is incredible in terms of all the attention to detail. They considered so many clever little things that they didn't need to spend time on. I can't think of any modern day game with this level of optional consideration. If 'soul' in a video game is measured by attention to detail, I think KH1 is the most soulful game of all time.
It might be due to me playing Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom so much lately but I think that game and Breath of the Wild are two modern games that have this same level of mind blowing little details. Those games go so far as to having the NPCs commenting on changes in the weather or what you're wearing sometimes. People are still finding new cool interactions with creatures and enemies just in BOTW alone.
All that being said, this game's level of detail is crazy for a game from 2002. The fact that we can make videos like this 20 years later is pretty astonishing.
Something I found neat that's probably only semi obscure is that you can do a barrel roll while you're riding the magic carpet out of the cave of wonders even though you can't do a barrel roll in the gummi ship until KH2. You do it by pressing Circle and there's a different animation depending on whether you're holding the stick vertical or horizontal
@RegularPat
#14 Sabor can also break through the wall where the ladder to the roof is. HOWEVER, this has only happened in my playthroughs 2-3 times.
Some extra tidbits from me:
- KH1 on PS2, outside Merlin's house: the moving rocks had whale cries. The later releases removed this
- Deep Jungle: House rooftop; KH1 on PS2 had an English flag, while later releases has a weather vane
- End of the World: Terminus (Neverland) the background/ambient sound is more... "twisted" in the PS2 version.
- Some treasure chests had their content swapped; example, Agrabah: Treasure Room the chest above the door had a gummi block in it PS2 version, while later releases had a stat boost item.
It never ceases to amaze me just how much effort went into KH1. I miss old Square...
I love the additional Destiny Islands dialogue. My friends legit wouldnt believe it was real until I showed them proof and half the people thought it was a mod when I tweeted it out a while back. Insane how many extra hidden animations and other stuff like this were put in KH1 that they must have known 99.9% of players would never see.
I have yet to play through the entire series, but I have played through this first game multiple times because of its charm, nostalgia and the feeling of pure fantasy I get from it. I remember when I was 4 or 5, I had had a PS2 for a year or two, I rented this game thst had Donald Duck and Goofy on the cover, characters I would have known at that age growing up predominantly on Disney movies and shows. I didn't know at the time what games were popular, or even take it into consideration, and I was not yet familiar with the internet enough to find out. So I simply stumbled upon this game and years later I had dreams about a void space with stained-glass floors and stairs leading into the distance. When I was finally old enough to start working my way through games I had missed out on, I came across Kingdom Hearts and the strongest wave of nostalgia hit me when I saw the tutorial and the memories of my dreams came flooding back and I immediately got my hands on it and played through it to its completion for the first time. What a wonderful, otherwordly game. To this day, this game is, to me, proof that games don't have to try so hard to be immersive or be so focused on realism, just transport me to another place, a timeless place, a true fairy tale.
the details in these games are so painstakingly poured over, by both the devs and fans alike, and i think thats part of its staying power:
i think the “even owl” comment is because in the song the lyrics go “rabbit, and piglet, and THEN THERE’S OWL, but most of all winnie the pooh”
just a little cheeky self-referential uniformity
I’ve been saving this video to watch for awhile, was so excited to be featured in it! I’m always looking for new things in the game every time I play it. It’s my favorite game ever so thanks for including my comment Pat!
Don't know if you already pointed this out but regarding Sabor and the treehouse, there are three additional holes that Sabor can potentially make. One on either side of the front door and one on the side near the ladder leading to the roof. Don't know if you can force it or if it's random though but I've done it before.
For #19, I wonder if Xehanort has been to Halloween Town and Atlantica? He already was the type to actively travel the worlds unlike Eraqus and Yen-Sid, but also he probably went to those places during this travels as a young man after his encounter with the Master of Masters. Maybe Triton knew trouble when he saw it and decided that all Keyblade Wielders were trouble, and Xehanort left behind the book about Heartless, either on accident or on purpose.
Its still amaze me how this game has so many little details in it. Still remember discovering some by accident.
A long weekend at work and this comes up? I absolutely must have an obscure KH1 fact video binge. Love the content, Pat, and keep up the great work!
some of this stuff is mind blowing but the crystal respawning the block?? this game has otherworldly levels of foresight
Im glad to know im not the only one who loved the soul on the first kh, no offense to 2 and such 1 feels so danm nice, what a classic disney fan would do
This is absolutely mind-blowing. Not kidding. I can't believe there are so many secrets packed into a PS2 game
If you have Donald and Goofy in your party after beating Oogie Boogie, but before you head off to another world, you can find Jack in the lab, talking to Sally. If you talk to him, he'll ask if Sora would like to join him for a "stroll through town." If you say yes, it'll take you to the party selection screen.
I don't know if other characters do this or if this only happens at this specific point in the game, but it sure was neat to find out about.
This just further cements who much time and effort was put into this game. It is so charming! Kh1 is my favourite game in the series for sure.
It's so crazy how much attention to detail this game has, and then you can complete Monstro after Hollow Bastion Riku fight and there's no change to those story segments there.
That’s actually not true. Sora will remark about how “Riku” is not actually Riku because he obviously knows it’s Ansem by that point
Always nice seeing the tiny details in kh 1. I miss when they used to do that. 😮💨 Kinda wish they could do a remake what if of kh 1 but with Kairi playable instead. I heard Nomura apparently once was going to make Kairi playable in kh 1 but decided not to. Still makes me wonder how that would have been.
on the second day on destiny islands, if you bring kairi more that two coconuts and nothing else (before having brought her anything else that day), she'll say "that's enough coconuts. how about looking for something else now?"
Oh my god that Kairi salute, my heart- KH1 is a game that keeps on giving. Goddamn Kojima levels of detail sometimes.
For once I knew about the 10th one since I was a kid. That's what happens when you like to press buttons to see what happens. It wasn't that useful but it was a nice change of pace.
6:57 @RegularPat A note on #11, you actually don't need to find all the evidence to get early access to blizzard, you just need to find the claw marks evidence (presumably the one the Cheshire Cat was talking about when he says "three are a cinch to find, the 4th one is tricky" or something like that). On my last KH1 playthrough when I presented the evidence to the queen, I realized that I missed one of the evidence boxes. But I did get the claw marks box and still learned blizzard early.
Pat, my man! Glad to see you're closing in on 50k subscribers, that's awesome, congrats!
God, KH1 is a thousand times more charming and feels more alive than ANY other KH game...
I mentioned before, I think on the 2nd edition, but if your playtime reaches 100 hours, the timer resets but changes colour
#16, there's an npc in almost every world that serves the purpose of telling you where to go next.
Did you ever talk about how the last cutscene of the game where Pluto runs off with the letter? How when Sora does the motion to Donald & Goofy to come along, in the distance there is a Pluto model that is not animated? It was not animated until the PS4 version was created.
Love these vids. The Hollow Bastion block regenerating is extra fun.
I knew Kairi had lots to say as I remember you can get her to say 'that's enough coconuts!" as you can get way more than the required number of coconuts on Destiny Islands.
A funny thing I just saw is that when you block Anti Soras kick he'll hop on one foot and hold the one blocked in pain.
Thank you for these high quality videos on an obscure video game that has been passed by time but still holds up
I was hoping Wakka actually had some super racist dialogue I secretly missed. Man that SBFP lets play of 10 was legendary. Grand Wizard Wakka is still on my mind nearly a decade later.
This is why I love the KH series you could play it a million times and still discover new things they really put a lot of "heart" into this game and it shows. I can almost forgive them for the over complicated plot.
"You can hold R1 to move the ship while keeping the targeting reticule in place"
WAIT, WHAT?! THAT'S A THING?!
so many of these are textbox dialogues that I had no idea existed and it's making me wonder a) just how many more obscure textboxes there could be in this game, and b) if it'd be worth it to dive into the game assets and look through the strings for text I haven't seen before
on one hand part of me feels like that might ruin the magic of discovery that KH1 does so well, but on the other hand you did just straight up tell me a bunch of them and that didn't ruin any part of the experience; if anything, it's even /more/ magical because of the sheer quantity of tiny details that I'm still regularly learning about so many years later and after hundreds of hours in this game
god I love KH1's worldbuilding and attention to detail so much
the colored pause screen fact is so cool !
Whenever you see someone say KH2 is better than KH1, just point them to the chimney that produces smoke when the fireplace is lit
Having picked up KH1 as a speedrun game of choice after playing it for many years and learning new things about it, great to see my Regular Boi posting a new vid on it 💪🏻
I was JUST randomly thinking the other day about how I wondered if I’d ever find out anything else about KH1 that I didn’t know…and then you go and upload this, and wouldn’t you know it, there is. This game is an absolute masterpiece, and it was on the PS2!
In this series, have you mentioned yet that the big "elevator" thing in Hollow Bastion that you have to fight in during the ride not only stops (which might be obvious enough), but also moves off the track right before the attack, and then moves back onto the track when you beat the encounter. Noticed it on my last playthrough and thought it was a really cool little detail.
pressing R1 in the gummi missions DOES WHAT
this changes everything
Another great video I love all the little details in KH1 but I'm surprised even after watching all your other videos you never mentioned the fact that in KH1 when Sora attacks a wall he shakes in hand in pain from the shock of impact. I've played KH1 for years and never noticed that until recently and it isn't present in other KH games.
WHAT, THAT GUMMI SHIP ONE??? Every time you post one of these I'm always so sure I know every little detail about this game given how much I played it to death, but then there's always one fact like that that completely floors me.
The best games have so much content that can be completely missed even after decades
You must have also played FFX and KH in high school, we came up with the best ways we knew to pronounce characters names like Tidus. I refuse to pronounce it as Teedus.
What a lovely surprise, wasn't expecting another one of these especially 3 years later
Whenever I can’t find anything good to watch on UA-cam Pat always drops a vid.
Perfect Time Patty at it again!
20 years later, more playthroughs than any other game I have ever played, still learning things I never knew. This game is just filled to the brim. Need that area interaction back in IV.
Bro how did I miss this?! Your KH fact videos are what got me into your channel in the first place lmao. Dang a whole year, I'm slacking.
Did you know Sora can have zero max MP? If you do a lvl 1 run and don't pick the staff, beat Sephiroth and equip the One Winged Angel keychain (and unequip all your accessories, obviously) Sora will have zero max MP. I was curious if the game allowed this so I did it and it's true.
I don't recommend anyone try it because that 1 MP makes a surprisingly big difference and it was a real pain in the ass compared to regular lvl 1 run.
Glad to see a fact i brought up years ago made it into a video years later
Hi! Love your videos and KH1 is also my favorite of the series. Not sure if this has been brought up in the comments before, but one thing I've noticed is that while Snow White, Cinderella and Aurora's character models in the 1.5 HD Remix release of KH1:FM appear to be the BBS versions, the sequence in the credits where the princesses appear still uses the original KH1 models for the characters. The updated Snow White character model does appear in the alternate scene with the villains if the player completes Deep Jungle before Wonderland.
A second thing I noticed (apologies if this has already been mentioned and I missed it) is that during the second visit to Traverse Town, after speaking to Leon in the cavern, Yuffie (without the others) may be found in the Small House (still the Vacant House). Aerith joins her after Cid gives the task of delivering the book to Merlin (Yuffie's text box dialogue when spoken to changes at this point).
In terms of fighting Sabor “as much as you want”, the guide for the original American version (aka not Final Mix) gave me one specific way to trigger infinite fights, albeit one that’s a bit of a pain to repeat. After the scene where Clayton almost shoots Terk, but before advancing further and making the Heartless appear, jumping off the left side of the tree branch by the house (thus ending up at the cliffs) will always result in Sabor waiting for you when you land.
FYI, I have not seen any of the previous parts of this, for all I know you covered this specific method already.
Lucky being the puppy that watches TV fits since hes the main character of 101 Dalmations TV show
This combines my love of truth with my love of games that feature shirtless mice. Thank you Mr. R. Patrick.
Fantastic video, Pat! I always love seeing the beautiful details within KH1. Never was another game like it. 👑💙
Nice use of ‘fewer’ on #25: all the more reason to love Regular Pat.
My head cannon for the 100 acre wood letters is that The King dropped off one envelope long ago, and they all just take turns using it for their letters.
Bread and butter, indeed. These are things about KH1 that provide that certain childlike sense of exploration and interactivity which keeps it (at least in my book) on par with KH2 and KH3 despite being older and less mechanically developed.
I’d like to think a large part of why the original video helped your channel find success is because we all appreciated someone celebrating those qualities of KH1.
There's another obscure fact that regards the really first Darkside battle. My memory might get me wrong, but if his health is low, he can go in a sort of DM, where he growls and then do that attack where he takes the ball of energy from the ground (the same move that you see from the second battle). It only happened me once, but it is so much easy to miss, being the fight pretty fast.
I did it! I finally hit the big time! I was wondering why you suddenly hearted my comment from 2 years ago. My sister is playing through the first metal gear solid right now and it really makes me miss when game devs had enough time to add cute details. Sure it's not make or break for a game but it adds a personal touch that you don't get to see too often these days.
Thanks for giving us the fact! ^_^ Yea, some of the old games really shine with the cute details
Another thing: in the Block Tigger minigame, deflecting his bounce on the ground gives 1 more to the multiplier. What isn’t quite as well known is that blocking him in the air counts as 3 blocks, which makes getting high scores for that really easy.
There's actually other holes Sabor can bust in the treehouse, the other one I remember is that the window there can be broken through by her, but I'm sure there's one other hole they can make for a total of 3.
I've been looking at other videos talking about stuff we don't know, and they are way less interesting and unknown facts. Love the researches you make. Have my respect and keep going !
Im still making my way through the series for the first time (Theyre all amazing so far) but its always cool coming here and learning more about these games
this game's such a gem, i'm still finding cool new details. cheers, pat.
I love the "small room charm" kh1 has. Yeah lighting a fire and having smoke is such a small thing, but it's big charm. Kh3 doesn't have that at all....
Absolutely incredible that everyone Despises Deep Jungle despite that world doing Its Absolute Most to HELP YOU get through it.
Just Fucking Remarkable how much people apparently despise this game for being confusing or unintuitive or whatever DESPITE the game giving you EVERY SINGLE HINT YOU'LL EVER NEED TO PROGRESS if you simply take the time to SEEK IT OUT
god forbid people LOOK FOR CLUES and ASK PEOPLE QUESTIONS
In a Fucking ADVENTURE GAME
God forbid a player TAKE SOME INITIATIVE FOR ONCE to actually EXPLORE THE WORLD
everyone gets hyped about DISNEY GAME I CAN RUN AROUND AND EXPLORE THE WORLDS FROM MY FAVOURITE DISNEY MOVIES and then they get pissed off when the game makes them actually Explore for themselves and doesn't hold their hand 24/7
great video, I never knew about the Sabor hole in the Tree House. Its also news to me that you can break the Hollow Bastion rock... maybe the Cave of Wonders rock is also breakable? Also, A thing I learned recently but I don't think was even mentioned in this series: In Wonderland, there is a painting that you can enter in it, and this painting is a Walrus and the Carpenter reference, pretty much being just a frame of the movie. I would give the credit to the video that I learned this, but I can't find it anymore, maybe it got removed.
Wow and I thought I was pretty good at making sure I talk to everyone enough to get all their text. Nevermind!
The gummi ship thing, sabor breaking the treehouse floor, and the moogle shop one all genuinely blew my mind
Kingdom Hearts 1 definitely has the child-like wonder of adventure. I even remember when Riku said he'd share that fruit with Kairi I remember saying out loud "No way!" ... Man I wonder how much impact these games had on me depended on how old I was when I played them..... I was Soras age and maybe younger when I played KH1 and even still in KH2.... These games take me back to those times .... I'm not ashamed to say I LOVE this series I don't care how convoluted it gets at times ...
My headcanon for how triton knows about the keyblade is that he’s the son of Poseidon and since the wayfinder trio visited Olympus coliseum in birth by sleep Zeus just had to tell his nephew about the crazy kids that beat the shit out of uncle hades at the Olympus family cookout
I absolutely love this
Fact i just learned today: apparently the vines in Deep Jungle can break? Like the normal ones, not the snakes? If you just hang on one vine for AGES (and its longer than youd expect) you eventually get a danger prompt and it breaks? What? Someone tell me if this is real or not
Loved the video, I like the alternate cutscenes facts. I remember winning against Leon and cloud but I never saw the losing animations
In the credits for the 1.5 version, Yuffie’s name is misspelled, in the PS2 version it’s correct
4:32 I think I remember one or two of the characters having an infatuation with some kind of ice cream
