That's cool that you'll be able to build it all at once! I wish I could have. The long drawn out process to get him built was discouraging to ever do another one of these Partwork kits. Have fun with your build! 😁
@kyds3k-omega From what I've heard, they will stop the run of certain kits after the full run and then bring them back a little later. I'm not sure why they do this. Hopefully R2-D2 will come back.
I am almost finished building this kit. I decided not to start the build until I had a good collection of the stages. I fully agree it would be great to be able to have the whole kit in one order. Agora Models did this with the Terminator T800 half size kit (in the UK). It is frustrating that some of the stages are pretty pointless, as you say, a five minute task. The most frustrating part of the build I have found so far is the metal plates that fit inside the metal dome with double sided tape. When I tried to fit the sub-frame of the dome to the metal dome, there is very little area to hold onto that does not have a plate behind it. My fingers kept popping the plates out as I tried to align the two large parts together to ensure the light sabre port would open. Even when I had everything aligned, the lightsabre door kept jamming shut. Fortunately the 'My Mate Vince' channel had had an video where he fixed the lightsabre port with, of all things, two staples glued to the underside of the hinge to add a slither of height to the hinge. Worked perfect. Still, I am enjoying the build - although I do not use the magazines. I follow Wayne from the World of Wayne as he builds the model. He is a Jedi Master at part builds.
I have to agree. The metal plates for the head could have been done better. Like you, I had to constantly watch myself to not push in the panels as well. I do think this R2-D2 is fantastic but the build process really takes away from the experience and the overall cost is way more than it should be.
The working features this R2 has are awesome and that along with the size of it makes it totally worth it IMO. The head looks really nice but I think the body could look a lot better with some nice paint work. All the silver areas could be done with real looking aluminum that more matches the dome and the blue could be done in the correct anodized blue look. Add a slight amount of weathering and it could look more close to the real one. Still, as is it's not bad looking at all.
Yeah he's definitely the most functional R2 I've ever owned. The blue arms, lightsaber and holographic projector especially. You're totally right about the paint. The silver and blue areas in particular. I'm still glad I got him and the results are really excellent!
I just completed My fan home R2-D2 and, I agree that the quality is exceptional. I feel the same that part of me feels like it's worth the cost cuz I love R2-D2, but the other part of me is I must be insane to pay that much. One issue I found was that the wheels are too slippery and most of my house is carpeting, so what I did is I bought 1/2 inch wide grip tape, which the surface is like sandpaper and the other side is adhesive. I stuck it to the wheels and now it'll drive on anything. Whereas, before he wouldn't turn or anything because the wheels were too slippery.
My wife purchased this a few days ago for my birthday that is October 4 now I’m a little concerned because it was very vague as to the actual overall cost.
Just watched the review and I agree on all your points! It has some big pro's and cons so in the end you have to decide yourself if it's worth or not, it's all about personal preferences! Also I think the magazines with all the inside star wars information and pictures + the real life science info is atleast worth 200 dollars, maybe more. Which makes the costs for the model a bit lower. Would be nice if they offer this as a full kit!
I think the first time this kit came out it was offered as the full kit once all the stages were released. I'm not sure if Fanhome will do this but they really should.
I am on issue 95 so coming to an end and yes World of Wayne is brilliant. The batteries I used are old salvaged laptop batteries however these have a flat end, I simply filed down the plus end used some flux and soldered a lump of solder on the end, they work perfectly so I saved loads of money by doing this and not buying new.
Considering the size and all that it does, the price tag isn't crazy. In fact, I don't think you could buy a full size one, with even a 10th of the same functionality for $3200. Plus it looks like you had a great time putting it together. You should be really proud that after a year and half you stuck with it and got it done.
It was fun to put together. I just felt the long and dragged out process to build it is unnecessary and the added costs because of that process. There's no reason why this couldn't be offered as a full kit so the builder can work on it as long as they want at their leisure. I love this R2 though! 😁
man what a dedicated project. it looks amazing! for the hologram, you should do the "peppers ghost" trick in your house with a sheet of plexiglass. that would be sick. I did a miniature version on my work desk with an iPad and people flipped out ha ha! well, enjoy! you have a beautiful finished project there! now they just gotta make a threepio kit ha ha! have a great Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas!
Oh! That's a good idea! That would look cool! I'm hoping they'll do Threepio as well. I'd also like to see the classic robots the B9 from Lost In Space and Robby! 😁
I think they did after the full run of parts were delivered which meant that you had to wait the years it took to build it anyway so it wasn't saving you any time.
I would love to build some of these things. I did build the R2-D2 when it was Deagostini but once I finally got done I said never again. They should have options of 1, 4 or 5 payments along with the subscription model. If they did that I would look into them again.
If you are a new subscriber to this build, Fanhome is now including the 1st binder (free) and the rest at a charge over the course of the build. I think that there are a total of 5 binders. Now if you have been building this kit for a while now and didn't get the option of getting binders when you subscribed, Fanhome is working at offering these binders at a cost to those builders. Currently, this offer is not active yet.
That's good to know. Too bad they weren't offered when they started this kit as it's too late now. I really wish they would have condensed the magazines as most people really only care about the instructions in them and having 100 magazines when you're finished is a bit much.
I'm subscribed to the Millennium Falcon. I've been saving all the parts so I can build it all at once. R2 Looks great, he may by my next one. in another year or so I guess.
I just bought an old and broken Hasbro 2002 R2D2 and I was planning to mod it with some raspberry pi robot kit to build it, I'll need a miracle to make it work
Ooo! That'll be challenging! I don't know anything about the technical side of doing something like that but I bet it would be awesome if you could make it work!
I spent two years and two months just saving the boxes and packs until I had all the complete kit, I also had the opportunity to purchase the extra parts that were specially made as replacements I still have to put him together though and I'm waiting to get some electronics to add to the inside of the opening panels in the front. If I don't put it together I could always sell it to someone who wants the full kit but they'll have to pay the shipping on 10 boxes that are condensed down. I would really love to keep him as he's my favorite droid, but I hate the fact that he doesn't have the ability to retract his third leg. I have two of the sphero 1/6th scale remote control r2’s on is R2 and the other is the black Imperial droid. They have great light up features and sounds and his third leg retracts and he can do this little wobble and then scream and fall over its really funny. He also can sit with you while you watch the movies and he interacts with what's going on in the film, he does things in patrol mode where he does what he likes or you can control him you can also program him to do certain things. I have two other 1/6 the scale r2’s from hot toys and sideshow that have light and sound and one of them has every single little arm and extension part that he uses throughout the films he's really amazing with his whole Arsenal displayed at once. Well your r2 looks great, did you have a problem with a gap between his dome and his body that needed to be readjusted that's one of the problems the early builders remarked about. I think I'm going to lightly weather mine not too filthy but just a little worn I also have a restraining bolt that was 3d printed to use on him. I wish they would make a 3P0 to go with him that would be awesome well happy building and thanks for sharing
It's a great kit. At least you can build him without having to wait for parts. I really don't like that about these kits. Yes I had that gap under the head. I talk about that in whichever video it was when I was building that part. I got it to be less noticeable but it should have been designed better for that part.
@@chuckandmax7313 Here's the link:ua-cam.com/video/05i6PTuZ-yo/v-deo.htmlsi=z9YEGQR3C2Y8AePb It's at the 21:56 time stamp. I don't really talk about how I fixed it. I just kept pushing down on his head over and over but I was worried I would eventually damage something. I did manage to get it so it wasn't as bad as the initial gap.
I've seen several people have issues with that part. I had to experiment with it to see where the lid was catching on the frame and then lightly file down those areas on the door. Just be careful that you don't get any iron filings into his head as that would be very bad for the circuit boards.
They often take a hiatus for certain kits and then bring them back. R2-D2 is too popular of a character for them to retire so more than likely you'll see the return of this kit.
ive seen a few of these weekly parts models, there are some id like, this one included, i just couldnt wait so long for all the parts, no patience for it lol.
Totally agree. I think that's the main factor for a lot of people not getting these kits. You'd think by now these companies would have figured that out. 🙄
You can join the actual R2 Builders Club and build to movie specs and you can actually BE an R2 Builder! And it’s more educational and rewarding than cosplay imo
They could make an option if you want to build more than one pack monthly. I'm on pack eight now but they will be shipping it on the eighteen of October.😅
Yeah the biggest drawback for me when it comes to these kind of kits is the forced, drawn out process to get the job done. I don't like to take two years to do anything much less build a model!
I agree. Fanhome really needs to reconsider what and when they are shipping items and match the quantity to the price. I just started R2 and few weeks earlier the Enterprise and I really don't feel like I'm getting my money's worth, you literally only get a small amount that is nowhere near the value you actually pay nor does the charged price actually match what they state on their website. And then to hear they use a lot of batteries and some that are actually hard to get and expensive, is absolutely NOT customer friendly. I would honestly like an option to get the items faster or all at once, like everyone else. If the competition reads the comments from others and jumps on things, like getting it fast and at a lower cost, Fanhome won't have a chance on the market. Fanhome just isn't customer oriented. If you still have your Enterprise parts and no longer want them I, like many others, wouldn't mind getting them. 🙂
Yeah about 90% of the time, I'd get the parts in and I'm thinking how I paid nearly $70 each time and looking at what I actually got and questioned how much was actually there. It was probably about $10 - $15 worth of stuff. Plus the shipping charges we pay each time. It's a ripoff. As for the Enterprise, that's been rotting in a landfill for nearly 2 years now. I threw it out. A waste of $720. Never again.
It's the main reason I haven't built anymore of these type of kits. The time frame is ridiculously long and there's too many risks on if you'll ever finish it.
I think some of these kits are available at a faster cadence. I'd add at least a bit of weathering. Don't go overboard and make him look like he just floated out of a Dagaba swamp though. Just a little something to add contrast. I consider the weathering step to be one of my favorite when I'm model building. But, to each their own, or however that goes. 😀 Nice work by the way. 👍
Thank you! I love doing weathering on models as well! The only reason I didn't do it on R2 is because if I end up not liking it, I don't want to mess him up after all the years and effort it went into finally getting him built.
I'm almost done with mine. It's a little disappointing that it doesn't stand upright but is locked into the leaning back position. My old radio controlled r2 leans back but can also bring the legs up vertically. Oh well.
@outsider238 I like the kit. It's been fun. I'm at stage 94. I get the retractable leg not being an option. On my radio controlled it doesn't retract either, but it can stand vertically. Would have been nice but not a big deal.
@DougShanahanMusic Yeah I agree it would have been a cool addition feature. I'm glad you're enjoying the build. R2 turns out to be pretty cool when finished!
Excellent, thorough review. Btw, Roy is there any chance of doing a FULL House tour of ALL your possessions over the years? Your joys, your regrets, all of it? 🤣😂😁😁😁😁
Impressive! But we're still waiting for repeat of the Hasbro's Star Wars Interactive Astromech Droid where there aren't any time lasps apps, and/ or rechargeable batteries. Unfortunately, there is no comparison. Not much a mind of his own. He doesn't move much until you control him.
R2D2 goal from the beginning was to make us happy. This little robot influences men of any age, who didn't left their childhood. And what is the price for something that makes you happy? No one is questioning for that afterwards when R2 does all the funny things we like about him since 1977.❤❤
Yup! I would like to get one of these however As long as I can’t buy the entire model all at once, I will not buy this or any of their other models until they make that option available!
I really hope you see this. I was about to get into the Enterprise D build. I hadn’t looked at any reviews. Can you tell me what was so awful about it?
The Enterprise D is an absolute horrible kit. The panels don't fit right, there's light leaks all over the thing including through the black windows, between the panels and all over the neck section. The lights are the most over engineered disaster I've ever seen and the whole thing is battery powered with somewhere around 16 batteries. Check out my "I Quit Building The Enterprise D" video. I show all the issues with it. It ends up being over $2.000 and it'll take you at least 2 and a half years to build it. I highly don't recommend that kit at all.
@@outsider238 Thank you. It was to be my wall centerpiece behind my desk on lit shelves (like a Star Fleet captain) I’ll check out that video and subscribe(just found you). Thanks again. Maybe I’ll find something else. It has to be an Enterprise D, A or DS9. Any recommendations are super welcome.
@@alejandronopasanada5302 Thank you! Yeah I made it all the way to stage 50 and quit when the parts kept getting delayed and I realized how bad the kit was. I wasted $720 and ended up throwing the entire thing in the garbage. Eaglemoss (the prior company selling that kit) actually contacted me after seeing that video. I'm hoping Tomy will make a diecast Enterprise D sometime in the future.
Every 12 year old should have one. Here's an idea: Build a 1:1 scale base model with some functionality. The head bowl from 22 or 24 guage stainless steal. ( Thinner if it can maintain bowl strength without creasing. ) Inner frame plastic & aluminum. Outer shell, tin. Every componant can be upgraded by a buyer. ( including framework & outer surfaces. ) Market the base model 400 u.s. dollars each. Smartphone App controller 20 u.s. dollars When buyer wants to upgrade, he/ she may do so at their liessure by ordering direct ftom company. Company only raises prices to adjust to material costs both higher & lower. Only greed & selfishness destroys it for everybody.
Nicely said! I'm really hoping there will be a company that sells a good quality, full size, functional replica of R2 that's at a decent price someday. They'd make a fortune!
@@outsider238 agreed, its a profitable venture provided the company owners are not greedy & don't make STUPID business decissions. We live in s get rich quick, seriously flawed world. Dial it back people! Set reasonable goals for the company. No more turning accountants loose on assembly, packaging, & shipping worlers. Just a good pace to keep parts & assembly flowing. Own every builder. Nobody gets more profit than their product is worth, minus sharing. If an owner truly desires too make kids & star wars fans happy this is a win for everybody. But greedy & selfishness always kills it for everybody. As a child I wanted this cool orange bicycle with a long white seat & tall handlebars. My mom hated it, so I got a sturdy & durable Huffey instead. Her choice was smarter & better. A nieghbor kid got the bright orange bike. I was able to cope, as my bike outlasted the test of time & my wieght back then. Yet, had there existed greed & selfishness durimg the 80s like there exists today, I'd never gotten a bike & likely died of a heart attack before now. These entry level R2-D2s are cute & cool, but GOOD GOSH! I can buy myself an outdoor get off my couch fun item for that price!! And chiks are drawn to outdoors active guys. Clue in. Dig chiks. Be active. I never had access to a lake. So I fished off river banks, canoed, camped. All much cheaper & just as fun. Untill jerks stole my tackle box containing my dad's handmade lures & my 12 inch cub scout pocket knife. :( Hills & valleyes all around us folks. Meet us at middle ground. You know we desire it. We know you desire to build it. Yet for those whom seek only too profit from the experience, I'd rather go fishing for catfish on a creek bank. Stop making it all about profit & fame! Star Trek didn't get successful by dwelling on who invented every componant, gizmo, & who had it 1st. I Don't Care!!!! Just make me a laser pistol so I can shoot a coin too watch it melt. To enjoy the experience. I want too fly an X-wing that can lift 400 lbs & still do combat rolls in mid air. We are so far behind the curb. I'm getting too old to care. I wanna do something else next month. Possibly next week. Cheers. 😁
that is so awesome. I like the audio features. With me being visually impaired, audio works well. I use a lot of technology throughout my day-to-day life, including a desktop PC equipped with a screen reader called jaws for windows, also known as Jeff W. I also use an Apple iPhone, that comes equipped with a built-in screen reader called voiceover. You don't have to pay extra for VoiceOver. It's built literally right into the phone. I'm totally blind. I was born blind from birth. I have an eye condition that is indicative of premature birth called retinopathy of prematurity, or ROP. When I was born, I weighed 1 lbs. 6 oz. When I tell people my story, they say I am a Miracle. I am a bit of a Star Wars nut, but I don't think I would be able to build one of these kits without sighted help. I have some Star Wars figures that have audio, and they are really cool. One of my most prized possessions is a talking Luke skywalker XWing pilot. I got him as a Christmas present in 2020 from a really good friend of mine.
That is fantastic that you have the tools to do the things you want. You are a miracle! I'm glad you are able to do the things you want. You are a true hero!
Hey! I literally just got an email from fanhome about the millennium falcon kit, is that the same one you started to build but thought was bad quality?
I forgot to showcase his camera feature but I show that in the Part 26 video of the build series if you'd like to see it. 😁 Also the batteries are 18650.
@outsider238 ye I agree like u stated in the video the 4 issues you get some parts only take u 5mins,would be good if u had the option to get more issues, but can't wait for completion long way off yet tho,on fanhome I've also seen the ET build another favourite of mine maybe in another 2 years maybe lol
This is an awesome model! Tried building the DeAgostini Millennium Falcon awhile back but really wasn't happy with how it was designed and ended up giving up on it when Bandai released their own version (which I felt was vastly superior and way less expensive.) But this is much better and so well designed. Great review and model!
Thank you! This particular Partwork was actually pretty good. A lot of the others I've seen seem to be questionable on their design, overengineering and quality. I won't be doing any more of these however. The drawn out process to ever get them built is a complete turn off for me.
Yeah it's a huge turn off to have this stretched out over such a ridiculous amount of time. It's like building the Lego Titanic and having Lego send you 10 pieces a month to do it! 😄
Considering model railroaders will dump 1500-2000 dollars for an O gauge model steam locomotive, considering all this R2 unit does, and how rare it is, it is VERY worth it!!!
I had been looking at doing one of these sets for quite a while but the website is always a little vague in details and final cost. Like you I really wish I could just buy the entire set out right. I really wanted to build the Enterprise D. However based on your very informative video, I think I'm going to pass doing any of these models. It's just too much risk for the amount of money. For $2,000 reliability and quality need to be near perfect in every purchase.
I completely agree. I think it's deceptive that they don't disclose the final cost on any of these kits. They get you with the first parts pack being so cheap and then the rest are around $70 monthly for 2 + years. There's a lot of these kits I'd like to get but the method of getting parts is a deal breaker.
I'd really like to subscribe to Fanhome so that I could buy their products even in their premium bundle but the company doesn't ship here in the Philippines. That's a bummer
I am in the middle of still building this stupid kit. I had a delay with 1 part and it took over 2 years for them to send me the missing parts kit. The R2 is still sitting here and and have just lost the will to finish it.
Wow!! 2 Years??? Was this when it was available only from Deagostini? While Fanhome is currently offering this kit, it's still Deagostini that it comes from. So did you continue getting parts after they finally sent you the missing part?
Very interesting video. I speak as a professional maker of armour. I make armour in any scale, but years ago I made a series that I called 'The Boy Prince' armours. Essentially historically accurate fully-articulated steel armour small enough for a child. Given the relatively large size I went mad with the detail but to my surprise, NOBODY wanted them? It turns out that quite simply they were too large to stand on a desk and too small to stand in a hallway, it was as simple as that. Which in my opinion is the same issue here. Best wishes to you and your new droid from an Englishman in a French forest. 🇬🇧⚒️🇺🇲
Not being able to buy the whole kit at once would be a deal breaker for me. Trusting this kind of company to be around for two years is not wise even if you don't mind the slow build process.
Finished mine a few months ago - not worth 2 years. The remote function works - but the AI part is a joke. My vacuum cleaner has more sense than R2. The description led me to think it was at least as smart as Vector robot by Anki - but no. He explores for a minute then stops, and seems to gets stuck everywhere. So now he sits in my office in a corner. A $1200 static model. I had higher hopes of him at least staying awake a bit longer than a few minutes.
Yeah I really felt like this was way more expensive than it was worth. It's cool and all but mine mostly sits around. The 2+ years time frame to get him built is ridiculous. I won't be building anymore of these type of kits.
18650 batteries is what they use in the older Tesla Automobiles and laptops. Weird size but common. I have a patio umbrella that uses them for its LED lighting system. Great R2D2 build!
Hi JeffL! Yeah I never heard of them until this model came out. They used to be difficult to find but I'm glad they're becoming more readily available! 😁
Worst part about this is that it’s controlled via an app. What happens when they quit supporting the app? I’ll never buy anything again that is app controlled bc when the company goes under or chooses to stop supporting it, you’re out of luck.
Yeah... one of the reason why I want to try to hack the code. ... and also because I want to try write my own AI for it. No idea if I will ever be able to do that, but well, it's another project on the horizon, once I am done end of December :)
@@Maryondo That would be cool if you did. The app has been around for a long time. Even during the long period when the kit wasn't available anymore so hopefully they'll just keep it around.
Now that we’re seeing real robots and AI functionality being created, how long until someone builds a 1:1 scale, intelligent and interactive astromech droid? Sooner or later, someone will do it.
I would have to honestly say no. Now that I"ve built it and had it for a while, it's not worth $1,600. If a company made this as a complete "toy", it would probably be around $500 to $600. The reason they get away with charging so much is because you're paying for it in very long increments so people don't really realize just how much these kits cost.
You bro...can this robot take some fotos??..or videos??..coz I see there is a camera on R2 dome. And may I know the spec of the camera lense?...like how many megapixcel? And when was this kit first time start for sale? Please let me know...coz really interested with this model in 2023...hopefully I'm not late for it. Thank man.
@r.r-vr4684 As far as I know the camera doesn't take pictures or video. It's just another feature so you can see through R2 while you're driving him around. I'm not sure what the specs are but it's a low resolution camera. This kit was just reissued from Fanhome so you can start building it right now.
Thanks bro...I have just received a message from a friend of friend..he own this..he said can take fotos but not recording video. Anyway thanks for the info so far. Have a good one.
@miguelmarina5580 They'll probably bring him back again in the future. They seem to go off and on with these kits but I'll be honest, I don't like the long, drawn out process to complete these kits.
That's too much $$$ for a half size droid that takes 2 years to build. Yes, the magazines look nice, but a really good behind the scenes Star Wars encyclopedia would easily replace all the info you obtained. I have two full scale Astromechs that I take to various events... The extra money you'll spend building a full scale Droid is fulfilling and rewarding experience...
And the funny thing is, I didn't even read the magazines! I was just interested in the instructions. I'd love to have a full size R2-D2 but I don't have the facilities to build one.
@@outsider238 I used the dining room table for several months... Until the Misses said, enough! Then I moved to the garage and later rearranged the kids toy room and made it a Builders room.
@@terryd2023 Haha! That's hilarious! Yeah I live in a small townhouse. There's no garage or basement so it's virtually impossible to work on a large project.
I really do not like this type of staged building. I want all the parts so I can build it at my pace. Not sure who thought this was a great idea to do it this way but it is not for me.
Worth every penny. I loved building mine. I’m a huge Star Wars fan so what’s not to love about your very own R2.
I agree, it's a pretty awesome R2-D2! 😁
I'm close to receiving my last boxes. Haven't started building it yet. Gonna try to knock it out in a few days. I appreciate this video. Thank you!
That's cool that you'll be able to build it all at once! I wish I could have. The long drawn out process to get him built was discouraging to ever do another one of these Partwork kits. Have fun with your build! 😁
where did you get the kit?! they no longer sell it on the site 😞
@kyds3k-omega From what I've heard, they will stop the run of certain kits after the full run and then bring them back a little later. I'm not sure why they do this. Hopefully R2-D2 will come back.
@@kyds3k-omegait is back now just preordered mine
That question is a matter of opinion. I’m currently finishing up my build and I have thoroughly enjoyed it.
I definitely enjoyed the build. I didn't enjoy how long it took. But this is the best R2-D2 in my collection for sure!
This would cost me 1000's to have it sent to Australia. All you guys are lucky! I'd love him but will be thankful with what i've got :)
Considering model railroaders will dump 1500-2000 dollars for a O gauge model steam locomotive, this R2 unit is VERY worth it!!!
Congratulations on finishing your R2! Yeah I wish he was able to drive on carpet as well. That's a great idea using the tape!
My wife purchased this a few days ago for my birthday that is October 4 now I’m a little concerned because it was very vague as to the actual overall cost.
It'll be over $1,600 once you're finished but when you're paying around $70 per month, it's not so bad. The finished R2-D2 is pretty awesome!
Yeah I love Wayne! 😁 I'm glad you found an alternative for the batteries. Just be careful to make sure the batteries you're using are unprotected.
I'm so glad I watched this. You saved me 2 grand. It's very cool, but way to many negatives for the cost
Yeah he's very expensive and it just takes too long to build him. He is very cool though. 😁
man what a dedicated project. it looks amazing! for the hologram, you should do the "peppers ghost" trick in your house with a sheet of plexiglass. that would be sick.
I am impressed with his features.
He's very cool! The best R2-D2 that I've ever gotten. I'm just not a fan of the build process.
If I'm not mistaken, Deagostini offered the Millennium Falcon kit in full
I think they did after the full run of parts were delivered which meant that you had to wait the years it took to build it anyway so it wasn't saving you any time.
I would love to build some of these things. I did build the R2-D2 when it was Deagostini but once I finally got done I said never again. They should have options of 1, 4 or 5 payments along with the subscription model. If they did that I would look into them again.
I totally agree! The only thing that keeps me from building any more of these kits is the length of time it takes.
I got it to be less noticeable but it should have been designed better for that part.
which video was it and how did you fix it@@outsider238
@@chuckandmax7313 Here's the link:ua-cam.com/video/05i6PTuZ-yo/v-deo.htmlsi=z9YEGQR3C2Y8AePb It's at the 21:56 time stamp. I don't really talk about how I fixed it. I just kept pushing down on his head over and over but I was worried I would eventually damage something. I did manage to get it so it wasn't as bad as the initial gap.
The opening port for the lightsaber is very difficult to get to open on my unit
I've seen several people have issues with that part. I had to experiment with it to see where the lid was catching on the frame and then lightly file down those areas on the door. Just be careful that you don't get any iron filings into his head as that would be very bad for the circuit boards.
Check out my Part 26 video. At the 27:10 mark, I discuss this and show it working after fixing that lid piece.
WOW it took that long to build? Thanks for the heads up! I agree with you about just ship everything at once
Yeah it's ridiculous. I don't know why some people tolerate this kind of building of kits.
Cool 😎. I'm starting the falcon now. About 20 months of fun right haha.😂
That's a big model! I hope it goes well for you. 😁
So wish he was still available to build by Fan home. Dang he’s absolutely so stunning!❤
They often take a hiatus for certain kits and then bring them back. R2-D2 is too popular of a character for them to retire so more than likely you'll see the return of this kit.
Today I got an email from Fanhome. It’s available now.
@@mcshmoe1143Yes! He's back! 😁
Just signed up!!!! Can’t hardly wait!!
@lorieann911 It's a long journey but R2 is pretty cool when you're finished building him.
ive seen a few of these weekly parts models, there are some id like, this one included, i just couldnt wait so long for all the parts, no patience for it lol.
Totally agree. I think that's the main factor for a lot of people not getting these kits. You'd think by now these companies would have figured that out. 🙄
I'm still waiting for the first shipment of parts for the Slave Leia build.
You can join the actual R2 Builders Club and build to movie specs and you can actually BE an R2 Builder! And it’s more educational and rewarding than cosplay imo
Yeah it's tempting! 😄
@@outsider238
This was just an experiment. I think this will be my first and last. I'll continue with my plastic models and mods.
@@LuisVazquez-hx3bk You'll be very pleased with this R2-D2. Despite the way the kit is done, this R2 is amazing when he's completed!
I subscribed because of this video ❤
Thank you for subscribing! 😁
Nice kit. It is unfortunate you can't purchase the whole kit. Or at least have kit deliveries to be able to complete in 6 months or some schedule.
The reason you get one magazine per kit is because when it was originally released it was a weekly release in the UK, not monthly.
I'm almost done with mine. It's a little disappointing that it doesn't stand upright but is locked into the leaning back position. My old radio controlled r2 leans back but can also bring the legs up vertically. Oh well.
Yeah I guess there wasn't enough room inside for the middle leg to retract. Are you liking the kit so far?
@outsider238 I like the kit. It's been fun. I'm at stage 94. I get the retractable leg not being an option. On my radio controlled it doesn't retract either, but it can stand vertically. Would have been nice but not a big deal.
@DougShanahanMusic Yeah I agree it would have been a cool addition feature. I'm glad you're enjoying the build. R2 turns out to be pretty cool when finished!
Excellent, thorough review. Btw, Roy is there any chance of doing a FULL House tour of ALL your possessions over the years? Your joys, your regrets, all of it? 🤣😂😁😁😁😁
Thank you! I've definitely been thinking of doing that for sure. Hopefully not too many regrets! 😅🤣
With Agora models you have the option to get it all at once
Ooo! That's good to know! Thank you! 😁
No one is questioning for that afterwards when R2 does all the funny things we like about him since 1977.❤❤
Very profoundly said! 😁
Yup! I would like to get one of these however As long as I can’t buy the entire model all at once, I will not buy this or any of their other models until they make that option available!
Same here! I heard that Agora models will sell the entire kits once the first run is complete.
Here's an idea:
Build a 1:1 scale base model with some functionality.
The head bowl from 22 or 24 guage stainless steal. ( Thinner if it can maintain bowl strength without creasing. )
Inner frame plastic & aluminum.
Outer shell, tin.
Every componant can be upgraded by a buyer. ( including framework & outer surfaces. )
Market the base model 400 u.s. dollars each.
Smartphone App controller 20 u.s. dollars
When buyer wants to upgrade, he/ she may do so at their liessure by ordering direct ftom company.

that is so awesome.
It looks awesome for sure
So after the first month, how much does the subscription cost monthly?
It was about $65 a month but the price went up near the end to close to $70.
I'm building the Knight Rider. Its hard to believe its been a year already and i have another year and half to go.
I'd like to build that one too but I don't want to spend another 2 1/2 years building one of these kits.
Can this R2 get around on low pile carpeting?
He will but it puts more of a drag on the wheels and motors.
Hey! I literally just got an email from fanhome about the millennium falcon kit, is that the same one you started to build but thought was bad quality?
The one that turned out bad was the Enterprise D. I didn't build the Millennium Falcon. It looks pretty good though.
@@outsider238 Thanks!
I forgot to showcase his camera feature but I show that in the Part 26 video of the build series if you'd like to see it. 😁 Also the batteries are 18650.
The most iconic droid on the planet imo.
Planet.. galaxy
I would get one in kit form if I could get the kit all at once.
I totally agree. I can't get on board with the monthly installments. It's way too dragged out and takes entirely too long to complete.
they should give you a choice of waiting per month for the parts or buy the whole thing at once.
They should do that with all these kits. They'd probably sell more of them.
Can the middle leg go up?
No it's stuck in place. There's not enough room inside to make it retract with all the electronics inside.
Great video , I'm a very long way off I'm only on issue 18 lol
It's an enjoyable build and R2 is awesome when you're finished. I just wish it didn't take over 2 years to complete.
@@drew19761 The ET looks really cool. I'm not a big enough fan to go through the entire process again to build him though.
Can he go into 2 legged mode? I would like that even if he couldn’t move
No he's only able to be in 3 legged mode.
That turned out pretty amazing! Still, over 2 years of collecting parts feels like a deal breaker for a lot of people...
Yeah it's a huge turn off to have this stretched out over such a ridiculous amount of time. It's like building the Lego Titanic and having Lego send you 10 pieces a month to do it! 😄
R2 looks great, but the white part needs a little bit of weathering. It's too clean and white.
Yeah I thought about weathering him but after spending $1,600 on this, I'm not messing with it.
So what’s the total cost?
It was around $1,600 for me but the price went up about $4-$5 per shipment when I finished it so it'll be a little more now.
Super awesome!!!
Now you just need to dirty him up and age/weather him 🙂
Weathering him would definitely make him look more realistic. 😁

@StvnLntz It's definitely not worth the $1,600 that you end up paying by the time it is completed.
How many inches is it
He's about 19 inches tall.
Yay I'm really early to this video
Looks like the blue dome panels are more purple than blue.
They have an iridescent blue color that looks really nice.
I'd really like to subscribe to Fanhome so that I could buy their products even in their premium bundle but the company doesn't ship here in the Philippines. That's a bummer
Oh I didn't know that. Hopefully that will change.
I have the Sphero R2 and i think thats enough you need tbh
The Sphero was fantastic. I still have mine. Wish they still made him and BB-8.
I built the Fanhome Ironman Mk III. Worked out to €1200+. Be prepared to Pay out!!!!
Yeah these models are way more expensive than they should be.
I have had mine for a long time and even though it sits about I love it I start it every one in a while and would not part with it
I am in the middle of still building this stupid kit.
Hahaha! That was very interesting! Yeah the size can be a bit weird. I wish I could get a full size R2-D2 someday.
I’m not sure 🤔 … how much ??
$1,600 when he's all completed.
Not sure I like the white trim on the blue squares on his dome.
The trim is actually silver. It looks like it's white in the video. Probably the lighting.
Ive got 48" figure of Darth Vader. I'll put them together 😊
Oh that's awesome! 😄😁
Tnx for sharing! LIke it a lot! Gr8!

Not being able to buy the whole kit at once would be a deal breaker for me. Trusting this kind of company to be around for two years is not wise even if you don't mind the slow build process.
I was on pins and needles the whole time after what happened to Eaglemoss going out of business and leaving their customers high and dry.
I got binders sent with mine but I had to beg for them
I didn't know that they made them for this kit.

Worst part about this is that it’s controlled via an app. What happens when they quit supporting the app? I’ll never buy anything again that is app controlled bc when the company goes under or chooses to stop supporting it, you’re out of luck.
That certainly concerns me as well. I'm hoping they won't ever stop supporting the app.
Yeah... one of the reason why I want to try to hack the code.

Is it worth it or is it worth it to you. I wouldn’t buy it because I have no need for it….. but would it be worth it to you?
I would have to honestly say no. Now that I"ve built it and had it for a while, it's not worth $1,600. If a company made this as a complete "toy", it would probably be around $500 to $600. The reason they get away with charging so much is because you're paying for it in very long increments so people don't really realize just how much these kits cost.
it just needs a soda dispenser and popcorn popper
🤣😅😆😂
Can’t get it no more so sad 😢
I just went on their website and R2 is still available.
@r.r-vr4684 Oh okay! I never mess with the camera that much so thank you for telling me! Have fun building him if you decide to do it! 😁
Cool vid and review.. you kinda sound like Luke at certain times!
Hey thanks! That's awesome! 😁😄
Please let me know of you want to sell it to me please!!
I won't be selling him anytime soon. I really like R2 and it took me way too long to get him assembled.
They discontinued it :( it is an amazing R2!!

Faulty send it back 😂😂😂
I really do not like this type of staged building. I want all the parts so I can build it at my pace. Not sure who thought this was a great idea to do it this way but it is not for me.
I totally agree! I cannot stand the long, drawn-out process to get these type of kits built.
me too im early somehow
