@My Mate VINCE Hi Vince that was me who reached out on the fanclub a couple of weeks ago. My problem with this R2 was his metal dome would get stuck, so I gave it a helping hand and that is when it failed. I was so upset mate. It was great to hear you say you would fix it. Let's see what the outcome of this series is.
Thanks Joe, I'll get part 2 out over the weekend, maybe Sunday. If you are still keen maybe you could email me after watching that video. My email will be in the 'About' section on my UA-cam page (maybe check that on a desktop PC) 👍👍👍
DeAgostini have been around for decades. About 20 years ago, like a mug I signed up to their radio controlled Subaru car subscription. Ended up costing around £500! Build quality wasn't terrible, it just was poorly engineered. The differential always blew and it was very difficult to get a replacement. Enjoyable segment, Vince!
I seen that on Google when I was searching what else DeAgostini have made. Looked good but I suppose they wouldn't have the research and development budget of Tamiya. Cheers M1 👍👍
I looked at that but the equivalent Tamiya was a lot less money and without having to wait to build. A lot of these got to about 3/4 of the way through and too many people dropped out and you ended up with the option to bulk purchase the rest of the kit but miss out on the rest of the magazines. Never a good deal, and how much magazine can you fill with stories about Subaru?
I to also collected and built the parts issues of DeAgostini's "Subaru" car. The car's differential gears broke countless teeth of the cogs on the first run out i did when i completed the car. Was lucky enough to have been sent full replacements by DeAgustini to rebuild it. Second run out and i broke the body shell lol. It was fun to build though, part by part
I built this one too, I have everything apart from one of the grippy tyres, thank WH Smiths for that one. My bodyshell didn't last long either before getting cracks all over lol
I actually have this, my daughter started building it and gave up after a couple of issues so she let me build it and she continued to pay for it! I can confirm that is was brilliant to make and very well put together. I've just dug it out of a cupboard and turned it on but the batteries are dead. And guess what - I can't find the charger! Worth the money? Probably not, but like you said, there is the hobby/model making element of it plus when you take into account the research, design, raw materials, tooling and then manufacture of the parts then I guess the price is somewhat justified!
Just watching the video and came to say the same thing. Another point, not a good idea to stick tin foil to an 18650 as its quite easy to short the + to the case if the shrink wrap doesn't cover it properly.
Remember that neodymium magnets can lose their magnetism when heating up. Better use some better conductive copper tape around it to be sure the current doesn't go through the magnets.
I cried watching this, it was my dream toy as a young boy and never got one.😢 bless you for giving me back the memories! thank you and cheers I can’t wait to see the next video ❤
This is such a cool toy...I saw the first movies (the 70-80's ones) as a child in the mid 90's and seeing this toy brought up so many memories...For the 70's R2 D2 was something never seen before
I built this and the millennium falcon and other than a few issues with R2 the build quality was amazing. The falcon was jaw dropping with the detail and metal framework. The weight of it alone told you the quality, I know its expensive but it was worth it well to me anyway lol
With the 18650 lithium cells, although not recommended I put a little blob of solder on the tops so they make contact with the battery compartment connections.
I am genuninely happy how far you've come. I remember your first videos - They were very entertaining, and I'm glad to see you've only grown since. These are truly immersive experiences, with us and you learning as we go. Good job, keep it up!
Vince then: "Let's check for continuity", "Let's try and swap things", "whoops, broken Switch" 😜 Vince now: "imma buy meself a Rolls Royce - dey see me Rollin', dey are in awe of my repair skills" 😎 Jokes aside, I echo your sentiments here Alex
I remember when i was a kid, there were TONS of this weekly magazine build, and the catch was the first magazine was cheap just to get you and all the rest where way prices
That’s a great find especially getting the complete set of assembly magazines. I found a few on eBay but all are located in Japan. I get nervous getting anything fragile that has to go through shipping customs. Especially it being this expensive
Whoever designed this put a ton of thought into every detail. Huge amount of money but the hobbyist didn’t get a bunch of paper-thin plastic components.
LOL. Yepeeee Vince. Yepeee! Tip: If you want that light saber to pop up properly you may want to get him a "her" R2D2... just saying. Thank you V-man for another GR8T video. p.s. I'm really impressed with that R2D2. I expected it to be a classic China export.... I WAS WRONG. Very COoL.
I have the large R2D2 droid that my wife bought me from Sharper Image, I believe, quite a while back. He does do a lot of cool things, but the one Vince has here is more sophisticated. Mine can follow you and go autonomous and understand voice commands, etc. but he cannot be connected to a smart phone by Bluetooth and has no video camera like Vince's. He still is pretty cool though!
I used to work for a magazine wholeseller - those magazines with bits of a model supplied were called PART WORKS, that was the techincal name given to them and they were usually available every fortnight, the model was usually very low quality and about half way through the run of the model most people had stopped buying them and by the end we were only selling maybe 20 copies in total - very few people made it all the way to the end, I dont remember every having that R2D2 model in stock perhaps it was only available in specialist model stores or it was after I left the wholeseller
Would love to see a guitar pedal fix. A ProCo Rat, a Boss DS-1, or an Ibanez Tube Screamer would be a good candidate, I think. They're common, should be easy to find a broken one.
I want to build a battery pack. But I don't have the cahones to take the spot welder I bought and put a battery pack together manually. I have tons of 18650s just laying around from old laptop batteries that I have salvaged. I want to build a big ol battery backup that I can plug stuff into like a TV or something if the power goes out.
A massive finger up from me 😂😂 ouch! I hope it didn’t hurt too much when you knocked it, absolutely amazed that was all it was lol normally stuff from cash gen or crap converters are ok as they often don’t test them fully Can’t wait for updates thanks Vince
If I remember correctly from when I built mine they recommended high drain unprotected batteries as the protection circuit is built into the pack you insert the batteries into..I hope that helps.
I considered doing the millennium falcon build with the magazines until I priced it all up and If I remember correctly it would cost over 1k , so I thought better of it I will say I'm very impressed with that R2, 899 impressed 🤔 not sure
I built this kit a few years back....very enjoyable process.....looks amazing when weathered. I haven't watched the full video yet....but you have to 'prime' R2 after you first insert the batteries.....that involves plugging in the psu for a few seconds. Without doing that he won't start up. People often think this means their droid is broken.
A brilliant piece of kit, I always thought those kits were cheap crap but this one was worth every penny, well done Vince, greetings from Galway Ireland
Lmao this might be the exact listing I was trying to buy. I emailed Fanhome (one of the DeAgostini services here in the states) if there was a bulk option because I don't want to wait two years for a R2 unit, but unfortunately they don't offer that right now. From what I heard, the AI isn't very good for the autonomous mode, but I feel like given the way he's built you can improve that and that's what I'm interested in with this guy. I want an autonomous robot that'll just wander around and interact with things like the Sony Aibo.
@My Mate VINCE De Agostini is a historic Italian company, founded in 1901 as a publishing house. It includes everything from media and communication to toys and finance… The publishing house has always specialized in scientific texts (the founder was a geographer). In fact, in 1904 it was the first company to publish an atlas in Italy. Now it is famous for scientific publications for children and teenagers. It is also famous for its monthly or weekly publications that can be purchased at newsstands, which offer collections of collectibles on a certain subject, and for the models to be assembled.
Thanks Paolo 👍 I think they may have been the same company to make extremely detailed cars that I bought from the £1 shop around 13 years ago. I bought a green MGB, a lovely white VW beetle and a stunning Maserati 3200. When I took them to the till you had to be over 18 to buy them. I couldn't believe how detailed they were for £1. They must have been unsold stock by De Agostini and they came without the magazine. Glad to hear they have been around for over 1 century, they must be doing something right 👍👍👍👍
So I participated with this partswork for 2 years long with total costs of more than €1000, but it's okay, he's cool. I had someone from the UK ship parts to me every two months.
Good afternoon hope you have amazing wonderful day You and your family Thank you for taking time out to show us your videos again I appreciate you very much Thank you so much You and your family stay safe Out there God bless you
i still have the complete set of cybot! i think it was the first robot degostini released! that fella also was very expensive back in the day. but a few years ago i got the complete set(all magazines sealed) for a very good price. i also want the r2d2 but they never released it where i live!
Hi Vince, i have built one of these and are on my youtube channel.. You may have already fixed as im near the start of the video. But it takes 18650 button top cells. Fairly specific and rare to find. that actually disgruntled us builders as they did not recommend the shop to purchase. Anyways when you do find the correct batteries you also will still have a dead R2 until you reset and initiate the battery pack. I think you covered this on another build but once batteries installed you need to plug in the charger to activate the power supply for 10 seconds or so. Then unplug the charger. I , you can get the operator manual on initial start up on the diagostini site, if you do struggle reply and i can get you the manual as i have it saved.
Thanks Horlixs, I did a 2nd video on him where I bought the correct batteries and you may enjoying seeing me connect up the Orange Pi to a TV. Congrats on filming the whole build 👍
It's a lot for a magazine, but not for a hobby. I know people who spend way more than that every week on fine hardwoods, cashmere and silk yarn, baking supplies, games, etc. etc.
i remember being so excited when it first came out. then soon ran into them not getting the issues in stock. then i lost my job so had to sell what i had online, always regret not finishing this. 😟
re the batteries you can buy tiny little round neodymium magnets that will stick to the flat part of the battery and bridge the gap to the battery box connector
When I was a kid in the 80s and 90s, we had something similar but with dinosaur bones. every issue of the magazine, we'd get another piece of the skeleton until we had the full T-Rex model, then we'd start getting the skin, then it'd move on to, if i remember correctly, a stegosaurus.
I love mine. Unfortunately he lives in the bottom of the wardrobe (due to space). When I charge him up (after being completely flat) I have to take each individual battery and charge them using the charger/tester that came with the kit.
You probably are one of the few dads that get happy when their kids toys break. Loved the vid, would have loved to build an R2-D2 myself even though I have no interest in StarWars
Vince goes to his local Chinese " chips and curry sauce please " little woman behind 6 foot counter " you wan sore finger" ? Vince " no thanks I've got one"
I was a young man when that came out in 1977 Star Wars A New Hope was the Movie. I'd love to see you fix! a C-3PO in the future. BTW Vince! I sent you some code/software to your NTL Email to help with the USB Flash drives weeks ago, I hope you got it 🖖👍
Oh God I did get it late at night (early hours) and I meant to get back to you in the sensible hours the next day...Sorry. I remember 'Brother Steve'. Thanks for sending it over 👍👍👍
I want a r2 too............ I'm hit but not bad R2 See what you can do with it! beep beerrrrpip... I want one never seen these off to get one thanks for this Vince!
What a fantastic model - the sounds are amazing, the projector is pretty much dead on. Hope you can fix his laser beam and the "Long LED" so he is back to 100%. The laser beam could be something as simple as a loose screw in a servo horn!
the last package of parts will arrive at the end of March, I hope mine will work properly, although I broke the lightsaber "door" hinge, for some reason it didn't open and close properly, and I'm afraid the sensors on the legs/soles don't work well, they replaced the part, but it was just as bad well, I'll see what happens
Lithium ion cells have vent holes at the top. The cells vent when charging. Just be careful you're not covering them all up with the Kapton tape, Vince.
Wrong Li-ion cells do not vent while charging they are sealed, don't get confused with acid cells, those vent holes are there for emergency pressure release to avoid explosion and fires.
When I built mine there was loads of faults it was heartbreaking. The projector had issues and the light saber ejector didn't work and a few other problems arose as he was being built I'm onto the full sized version now
@@Mymatevince Reminds me very much of when I had an AIBO! You should look for one of those to repair - they are pretty pricey though! Very likely broken gears...
@@GadgetUK164 I think I've had my fill of plastic gears. One TruckerTronic or Green Frog Band per lifetime is the recommended safe limit, and I've done them both 😬
@8:19 - I was excited to look up that cell seller to possibly place an order. How about no. They generally are to come about 80% charged. My device won't even run a cell that low and its VERY high draw.
Jelly Jelly Jelly. LOL @ decapitate. You got a bargain with this one for sure esp with the lego set and a pile of the mags. When you get bored of it, let me know for 1st refusal lol. Cant wait for the next parts
I can see the appeal, like you say an adult with a job can afford that once a week and eventually they've built a big cool thing. It's quite hard to design a kit like this in piece breakdown, the parts can't be overly large so it's a bit like 3D printer bed size accommodation. Only seen a few videos about these kits but the quality gradient varies and often comes down to one area that could have been better, but the overall total price point balance didn't work in it's favor. People gripe but this matter is the real biggest speedbump not in favor for the "rise of the machines" Ie. cost prohibitive. ^_^

OMG! I need one of these. Looks amazing, and so well constructed!
A proper grown up toy!
Stupid RD-D2 toy
Deagostini/fanhome 2 years to buy 😂😂
This is the coolest item you have ever featured.
Vince your PCB WAY ads are the only ones I don’t skip. I love the effort you put into them.
Thank you P5ychoFox!!!!!!

You can use small thin neodymium magnets to make the battery button tops.
Exactly!
Also a great way to charge them if your charger alligator clips are ferous😎
i came looking for this comment
Slip small flat washers between the cell and the enclosure.
Just watching the video and came to say the same thing. Another point, not a good idea to stick tin foil to an 18650 as its quite easy to short the + to the case if the shrink wrap doesn't cover it properly.

I have to admit as a long time SW fan (from way back since 1977) this made me quite emotional. What an amazing little droid!
well done Vince. Your channel is my favourite on YT. the subjects and your infectious enthusiasm make your vids a joy to watch!
Thanks MM 👍👍👍
Something like that was something I could only dream about having as a bairn when Star Wars came out at the end of the 70s. Great stuff Vince 😃
Love the way you are genuinely thrilled with this Vince
I always thought those magazine kits were over priced rubbish, but that is very good, and had quality parts. 👍
The quality tends to be high, but yes most decent magazine / kits are in the £900 - £1200 range (batmobile tumbler springs to mind)
I built this and the millennium falcon and other than a few issues with R2 the build quality was amazing. The falcon was jaw dropping with the detail and metal framework. The weight of it alone told you the quality, I know its expensive but it was worth it well to me anyway lol
I built my r2 a while ago loved building it and did a whole playlist of all the videos and even did a full wiring video to help others too
This thing is really nicely made, until you’d opened him up I assumed it would be chatty plastic. Great video as always Vince.

Thank you!

Thankyou, I wish i could fix my sphero r2d2, you fixed one before, but i feel if i tried to fix it i would end doing more damage.
Great gizmo 💜🔥💜🇬🇧🖖
Whoever designed this put a ton of thought into every detail. Huge amount of money but the hobbyist didn’t get a bunch of paper-thin plastic components.
your comment doesnt make any sense bro
Very COoL.

What a great video. You need to get him 100% working and keep him as display piece. Plus he will go up in value as time goes by.
I'd love to say that I think this is too expensive or whatever but fact of the matter is I'd pay full price in a heartbeat because this is SO COOL!
I remember doing the same thing years ago with the foil. I am now 54 Such a great video. Really love your videos. Thank you!
Would love to see a guitar pedal fix. A ProCo Rat, a Boss DS-1, or an Ibanez Tube Screamer would be a good candidate, I think. They're common, should be easy to find a broken one.
brilliant ready for the Millennium Falcon did all that come with a magazine every week must of been big parts looks very good quality
Woh, Woh, Woh, Finger. Made me chuckle mate. 😁
Watching you check for batteries was like watching R2'S colonoscopy. The business model for this is really cool. I've never seen it here in Canada.
You got an amazing deal but at least you had the skills to back it up if things turned out otherwise. What a great toy!
All R2 Units deserve some love
I want to build a battery pack. But I don't have the cahones to take the spot welder I bought and put a battery pack together manually. If I remember correctly from when I built mine they recommended high drain unprotected batteries as the protection circuit is built into the pack you insert the batteries into..I hope that helps.
Thanks Woof Woof 👍
What a beautiful device. Wow. Very well made. What a great kit
Looks Amazing that Vince! Lovely bit of kit. Liked the video projector part and the video driving bit. Hopefully you'll get the LED bit sorted 👍👍
Thanks Mick 👍
I considered doing the millennium falcon build with the magazines until I priced it all up and If I remember correctly it would cost over 1k , so I thought better of it

Wow the R2D2 is sooo cool! I'd love to te see more vids of it!
Nice fix it video Vince. I wonder how many of your viewers have just looked up these on ebay?

Very enjoyable video Vince! Keep up the great work!
As a Star Wars fan, I need this!! But I’m also in New Zealand so shipping will be a huge problem!!
Awesome Vince my favorite robot is r2 d2 like to have one i have one butt its a smal one butt yours just awesome nice work.Keep up the good work
So I participated with this partswork for 2 years long with total costs of more than €1000, but it's okay, he's cool. I had someone from the UK ship parts to me every two months.

Thanks Barbara, you too 👍👍
This is very cool! I would love to have one but I know someone who really would adore this! Nice!
I wish I knew about this 😢 this is the coolest thing ever!
An old colleague of mine worked on the development of these. I've wanted one for ages...serious wedge.
i still have the complete set of cybot! i think it was the first robot degostini released! that fella also was very expensive back in the day. but a few years ago i got the complete set(all magazines sealed) for a very good price. i also want the r2d2 but they never released it where i live!

Gotta admit it looks fantastic . Yes 8.99 for 100 mags alot ,but what fun it would have been building it

then i lost my job so had to sell what i had online, always regret not finishing this. 😟
Can you stick small neodynium magnets to the 18650s in place of the missing nubs? I think I remember Julian Ilett doing that on his channel.
The World of Wayne channel builds all of these models and has done R2D2. Very informative.
re the batteries you can buy tiny little round neodymium magnets that will stick to the flat part of the battery and bridge the gap to the battery box connector

You probably are one of the few dads that get happy when their kids toys break. Loved the vid, would have loved to build an R2-D2 myself even though I have no interest in StarWars
Hey Vince, I hope your son likes it as much as you! have fun.
Do your research on the batteries as they have to be a specific type ( unprotected). I enjoyed the build.
hi vince, I'm just half way building R2-D2 its great
Vince goes to his local Chinese " chips and curry sauce please " little woman behind 6 foot counter " you wan sore finger" ?
Vince " no thanks I've got one"
Thats So Cool Vince, Well Done I Want One !
That is awesome!
Might have to buy one myself now.
Good score. I'd take the temporary batteries out "when not in use". There is enough lithium and polystyrene in that robot to make a pretty big fire.
Nice segment to the sponsor Vince
Thanks Jason 👍
@@Mymatevince you are welcome Vince
There was one unused Connector on the Board. Maybe thats any feature that is missing?
the last package of parts will arrive at the end of March, I hope mine will work properly, although I broke the lightsaber "door" hinge, for some reason it didn't open and close properly, and I'm afraid the sensors on the legs/soles don't work well, they replaced the part, but it was just as bad well, I'll see what happens
You founding it on Ebay for 300 pounds is a steal !!!
only for the display it would have been worth it
this deals dont exist nowdays .
You can put a small neodymium magnet on the positive pole to add a nib for a permanent solution.
Never use tin foil !!!
I'm so disappointed, that you didn't say "my finger is still not fully operational". xP
I noticed the last time you tried the light saber, it was catching on a lip at the top.
Lithium ion cells have vent holes at the top. The cells vent when charging. Just be careful you're not covering them all up with the Kapton tape, Vince.
Valid point there M1, nice one, thanks for pointing it out 👍👍👍
Wrong Li-ion cells do not vent while charging they are sealed, don't get confused with acid cells, those vent holes are there for emergency pressure release to avoid explosion and fires.
When I built mine there was loads of faults it was heartbreaking. The projector had issues and the light saber ejector didn't work and a few other problems arose as he was being built I'm onto the full sized version now
Amazing video Vince. Thank you so much. Brilliant toy. Greetings.
Wow, so cool!!!!! My cats would probably like that too lol Can't wait for part 2 :)
You could spy on them when away from home. Thanks Chris 👍
@@Mymatevince Reminds me very much of when I had an AIBO! You should look for one of those to repair - they are pretty pricey though! Very likely broken gears...
@@GadgetUK164 I think I've had my fill of plastic gears. One TruckerTronic or Green Frog Band per lifetime is the recommended safe limit, and I've done them both 😬
Awesome fix and video. Tip top 👍🙂🇬🇧
What an amazing device, looking forward to the next part!
Thanks Garth 👍
@8:19 - I was excited to look up that cell seller to possibly place an order. How about no. They generally are to come about 80% charged. My device won't even run a cell that low and its VERY high draw.
Jelly Jelly Jelly. LOL @ decapitate. You got a bargain with this one for sure esp with the lego set and a pile of the mags. When you get bored of it, let me know for 1st refusal lol. Cant wait for the next parts
I knew you would like him Emma👍
@@Mymatevince too much for my own good
@@DEmma1972 😂
Well done... Now I want one for my own too 🤣
Brilliant!! And subbed your channel. Looks great content 👍👍👍👍💙💙💙
Thank you so much Michael 👍👍👍👍
I am in process in this same build, I have 1-80 currently. If you need anything out of any of those I can always share it.
Vince this was one of your best videos, looking forward to watch more about R2-D2.
Thank you!!!!
I sold many R2D2 in my time finding them at local thrift store, Even a Wall-E First Generation. I never seen this generation before.
I’m surprised Vince, that you didn’t just put a small amount of solder on the contacts in the plastic battery case
