Maybe thats why the jedi masters easily died, the actors were so flabbergasted that a 60yr old man managed to do it, prob also in one take Ian McDiarmid: **successfully jumps and spins** Agen Kolar: "Holy shit guys Ian actually did i-aaauuugggh **gets stabbed**" Saesee Tiin: "Ww-wait wha-aaaaaghh **gets stabbed**" Kit Fisto: "**parrying** Whoa whoa are we really doi- **gets sliced**" George Lucas: "Ok cut! Eh seems good enough. Now Sam, go have a staring contest with Ian for the next scene"
Yeah, watching the nice old guy suddenly grab your weapon and then slaughter three people you were on decent (if strained) terms with would lend a lot of weight to Windu's argument to forego due process in this case.
Wait. Nobody gonna talk about how he casually says he texted the fight choreographer?? W my man. I can wait til a fan edits faces and backgrounds over this choreo!!!
With the state of generative AI tools these days, this wouldn't even be that difficult.....Control Nets in Stable Diffusion to handle the body poses, LoRa/Lycoris to get the faces and outfits correct.....hmmm, would be an interesting project to be sure.
@@Blupearl2003 exactly, that's the reason why there's zero fan edits out there, because they don't have the right, it's the same reason why you can only get a movie legally and can't physically watch it for free.
Imagine being the stunt guy that trained for 6 months to do this scene, and George comes in the very last day and is like, "So, this morning as I was eating my cornflakes, it came to me. How about we do the complete opposite of what I said 6 months ago." Stunt Guy: But what about me? George: Who are you again? How did you get in here?
@@cz5836you do know some stuntmen either do it for money or care for their craft, we don't know how he felt when the scene was scrapped, he probably didn't care or was probably pissed his skills were wasted that would potentially be the magnum opus of his career.
@@angeloluna529 Anyone who points out me assuming that he doesn't care, is also assuming he does. I'm aware that hard work often wants to be appreciated, but the reality is, most stuntment don't ever make it as movie stars. So assuming he doesn't care would be more realistic as he probably knew better than to get his hopes up for anything. He got paid, and was able to feed his family, and that probably mattered more.
Ian was so committed to the role that he actually became a Sith Lord in secret during filming. When he arrived on set that day, Lucas was so impressed by his command of the dark side that he insisted that Ian do all the stunts, including the flips.
While he had a stunt double for the actual fight, that's Ian using real force lighting against Samuel L. Jackson, who also really leapt off balcony to avoid further lightning-damage. Don't worry, Jackson is fine, he's a Jedi - landing from a high height is basic padawan stuff.
Watching the mightiest Sith Lord take on 4 Jedi at once with slow little tickly pokes was just the biggest WTF in the theater...what an absolute shame they didn't use the stuntman.
This is all interesting that there could have been a more grand scale fight but 3 of 4 Jedi being totally incompetent actually does reinforce the ongoing plot in the prequels that the jedi order has become weak and lost its way.
@@MerchantIvoryfilms I'm not really that heavily interested in behind the scenes movie making production issues. You are the one that said it was a WTF moment within the end product movie. That it fits in with the existing lore is perfectly relevant.
Bro, Palpatine is just so fast, that the other 3 Jedi just couldn't see his movements. The whole shoot was in slow motion, so that the audience could see all the moves.
I could have gone my entire life without knowing this info, but now that I know this I'm so mad and deeply saddened that this awesome fight scene was scrapped 😖
From what I read, those three masters were Windu's possie. Like those were the four best duelists in the ENTIRE jedi order. Worst part is the guy who goes down like a bitch in the first two seconds is part of a race with natural precognitive abilities. Since he was a jedi master those abilities would've been sharpened to a razor's edge... but he didn't see that slow ass stab coming
Wow that original footage with the stuntmen is soooo cool. Palpatine really looks invincible and terrifying. This the first time we have seen Palpatine fight and to see him moving like that would’ve been incredible.
To add to what you correctly said, I think the scene would also have worked much better if Anakin had arrived AFTER Palpatine had had his force lightning reflected back at him. Anakin would then not know how it happened. He might assume Windu had done it. The shock value for him of seeing his friend disfigured would have been greater. Also as a plea for sympathy "Hey, Anni, I was just chilling in my office when he just burst in and attacked me, look what he did to my face!" works far better than "Hey, Anni, I know I just revealed my badass sith power which I lied to you about by trying to fry Mace alive like a chicken, but I'm just a nice, innocent old guy, honest!"
Ani already knew Palpatine was an evil Sith Lord before the fight. the decision was either let an evil asshole die, or keep him around to help save his wife. and Mace trying to extrajudicially murder him was just the final straw.
I disagree tbh, I think the scene is perfect as is. Lucas wasn't an idiot and this scene didn't happen in a vacuum. If anakin walked in afterwards his decision to help palpatine would've made him less responsible for what came after. He made the conscious decision to go against the Jedi here and join the sith, doing it your way would cheapen the choice he makes here and would have to happen later which may make anakin less susceptible overall and may result in him changing his kind
I think the whole point of the scene is that Palpatine could have easily won the fight without Anakin's help, but chose to hold off using his real power until he got Anakin to betray the Jedi.
@@russellmzAnother interpretation is that it only revealed his true nature. This is not The Rise of Skywalker, after all. That kick Mace did to disarm Sheev should have ended with his leg being chopped off. But if Sheev sensed Anakin's arrival and gave up willingly, Mace would have sensed that shift in his focus and seen an opportunity for the kick. Perhaps, that was exactly what Sheev wanted in that moment. The fact that Sheev unleashed his full power only seconds later, after Anakin sliced Mace's hand off, is all the proof I need for this. But I understand people who root for Windu, he is played by one of the most awesome actors in history.
@@alexpokrandt4378 This makes me sad cuz I know it will never happen. But at least we got what we got... All Clone Wars fights are either good, amazing or legendary.
@Ba'al Yeah I agree, but George definitely went full retard on one of, if not THE most important Star Wars movie. Weird dialogue out of character and totally unnecessary dialogue, to SUPER short lightsaber fights. RotS could have been immortalized as the best Star Wars movie. It didn't. No wonder it got a ton of hate, and I say this as a "young" gen Z who loves the prequels. It's kinda sad AOTC is a better movie than RotS.
@@fistofram5526 Wait WHAT!?!?!?!? Practically EVERYONE universally agrees RotS is the best prequel movie. You are speaking from a minority position here. Also "SUPER short lightsaber fights"? What? Sure some were short, but the most important ones weren't. I'd gladly watch the full length original cut of RotS myself, but I can understand why some stuff was cut down to size. But yes, I agree Lucas made a mistake emphasizing close-ups of Ian when they had such amazing choreography. That being said, people have edited the actual theatrical release to be moreaccurate to Palpatine's true speed, so while these unused choreographies look stunning, it is possible to make even the final product work better with extra editing, so I am not that sad about this specifically. What I AM sad about most of all, is that there is no material of Vader slicing down padawan and knights at the temple. P.S. I do like to hear a contrarian opinion like "AOTC is a better movie than RotS" because I personally find AOTC gets way too much flack. I think the whole of the prequel trilogy honestly works nigh flawlessly. All we need are some 1 hour longer extended versions for the super fans, but the final products are at the very least 4/5 in execution regardless of Lucas' shortcomings. Remind yourselves that Lucas did try to get others to direct, because he KNEW he was not the best in that department. But the man wanted to tell a story and so he did.
It's easy to forget that Lucas didn't always know best. As a genre director I can only think of Jackson and Nolan as his peers. Film makers who had both the original vision and the most creative control in realizing those visions. With each of them you can see the wheels of hubris at certain points in their careers. That's the give and take of it all. You wouldn't have those great stories without them but you also wouldn't have these odd choices if someone could push back on them.
I would love a 4 hour cut of Sith with all these extras, but i feel like Lucas understood the prequels needed to tone down the pointless action scenes which a lot of people complained about. The story doesn't need the Jedi to attack the guards or have a longer duel with Palpatine.
most of the good director stuff in his films tends to be done by others George was good at creative visions but god awful at actually putting his vision to film and in particular is really bad at both dialogue and romance and as you see from his change the fight not the actor choice he is keen to make incredibly bad choices for scene formation
Honestly, glad to see some people realize this. People these days tend to put on rose-colored glasses regarding the prequels, and put Lucas on a god-tier pedestal ever since he sold Star Wars away. Like, the man wasn’t good at EVERYTHING, and directing was unfortunately one of them.
And yet Dooku's actor Sir Christopher Lee is actually a practitioner in rapier combat. He played a role in the Three Musketeers and is a trained swordsman. My guess was that Lee wanted the fight to be different or declined because of his age.
The fact that he would have used Anakin's lightsaber now explains an old action figure from 2005. When they first released all the ROTS toys prior to the movie coming out, there was a Palpatine action figure from that scene where he had a blue saber instead of red. Because it was believed to be an error, it was quickly changed to red and the blue saber version became extremely rare. And even more interesting, that figure also seems to be holding Anakin's hilt. Guess now we know it was never an error after all
Man, Nick got shafted so hard on revenge of the sith. He deserves better. Thank you for helping him gain some back-due recognition for all his unseen efforts on the prequels.
Just adding my two cents: A somewhat drawn out fight between four Jedi and the Royal Guards would have been good had it remained in the final cut. It would have established that they weren’t disposable fodder (like stormtroopers) and would have made Yoda look so much more powerful when he dispatched two of them with a simple wave of his hand. IMHO.
I understand the concept of the three other Jedi around Palpatine being surprised by his reveal/approach but them going down so quickly does feel a little cheap on their behalf. It would make sense if one or two of them were slain right away due to surprise, but the original intention of having Kit Fisto last longer makes more sense. I think the overall fight between Palpatine and Mace actually works pretty well in the film if you don't have the context of this extra footage. I'm kinda confused why they didn't use the full choreo with the stunt double because they obviously did use a stunt double for _some_ shots in the final. The blocking of that entire scene seemed to have been a bit of a mess from the start - but I still enjoy it immensely in the film
The movie would have played better if General Grievous was an unseen offscreen mcguffin who only serves to isolate Anakin from Obi-Wan, by cutting all of the GG scenes there would have been more time to focus on the important aspect of the film which is the corruption of Anakin Skywalker. I don't mind truncated Kit Fisto scenes largely because with all of the money and talent that they throw at these movies the aliens often look like Don Post masks. I should take that back Don Post masks in the 1970s looked better than what they pull off. I know people hate on Valloren but at least their aliens looked convincing.
Because mcdiarmid actually fighting at his age showed how raw palpatine was in power but how unpracticed he was in dueling which I think was lucas' goal and made it make more sense that mace out of everyone present was the only one who could stand against his ridiculous force power, as mace was a master duelist. It makes sense when you think about his reasoning for it, if palpatine was way cooler in this fire then that would imply every Jedi was way cooler as a result of them all being able to fight palpatine. Mace was number 2 power wise, anakin number 3, yoda 1, but palpatine was above them all. How would any Jedi actually be able to fight him if yoda couldn't even do it alone.
@@Jiub_SN He actually just wanted better close up shots and better visuality on the main actors. Using stunt actors would cause them to use a lot of none focused shots so that they could hide the faces better. In my opinion this was a mistake as palpetine is not only a great force user but also a very good dualist which is not portrayed in this movie through the 15 mins warning
Man…the first few seconds of the video is amazing. That fight would have been epic! I really, really wanted Palpatine to show off what Plagueis taught him. He openly stated that he only used a lightsaber to humiliate the Jedi. What a great opportunity to humble them.
@@StarWarsAnalyst shoot me, but I think its better as it was in the film. Palps seems like he is in way more control of the fight, which suits how powerful he is, the fight goes exactly how he wants it to. He easily dispatches the 3 jedis and leaves mace alive on purpose because he knows his rash anger will help ankin cross to the darkside. These deleted scenes make it seem like much more of a struggle which I don't feel portrays the disproportionate power levels of the combatants
@@andymatheson82 I agree palps was on an entirely different power lvl but mace was an exceptional duelist, in a straight up duel, mace was good enough to hold his own against anyone. @@phil56892 the way I see it jedi are only able to use laser swords in a world that has guns because the force guides them on where to place the light saber, same with dueling its not reaction time or skill its how attuned to the force the duelist is. Palps easily wins because he is able to cloud the mind of the jedi, breaking down their connection to the force, essentially disguising his next move, which is why he cut down the first 3 so quick, they never sensed those strikes were coming. Mace is good and all but to me it still looks like Palps is just playing with his food. Mace for all his power and strength never once sensed who palps was. Essentially palps is so powerful he knows exactly what his opponents next move is while fully disguising his own. His duel with Mace seems like it was fully set up to trick anakin, it was and it worked
@@andymatheson82 "the way I see it jedi are only able to use laser swords in a world that has guns because the force guides them on where to place the light saber," Other then the fact that said force also enhances their reactions, physical capabilities, and gives them precognition not to mention that lightsabers would probably melt most bullets anyway and could easily just be "forced" away from the Jedi a lot easier compared to blasters (Not to mention blasters > bullets in most cases) the Jedi existing in a world with "guns" makes sense. They even have an lightsaber style dedicated to deflecting projectiles so it even makes more sense. Before thinking in what I call the "Open Field-Straight Line Fallacy" in which you just think you can shoot the other guy and he's running straight at you think about what else he has and does that make that a little bit more difficult since he's also trying to kill you and survive. Like, you can't just "shoot a jedi" because they're either fast, deflecting, and/or just holding their hand out and catching your shots as they come at you really fast. Context will help you land your shots Now with that tangent out of the way, there books make Palpatines fight with Mace and the other Jedi a lot more exciting and Anime-ish which as you know translate poorly to live action. Oal had two goals in that fight: kill Mace and/or take anakin. He failed one
That moment at 0:22 when Lucas is justifying his choice to get Ian McDiarmid to do the fight himself, you can see in Nic Gillard's face that he already knows, this isn't gonna go well.
the first shooting of the scene in 03 with anakin there already, was done before fisto's actor was replaced from zach jensen to ben cooke who looks shorter (zach unavailable for reshoots maybe). it was also before fisto's prosthetics were altered slightly with the tentacles, final shoots having 2 of them arranged to the front instead of 4.
I’m not sure that’s true about the Kit Fisto actor being replaced after filming the original idea with anikan in the room. The episode 2 actor Zach Jensen was part of the construction crew for the sets specifically for episode 2 and was asked if he wanted to be in the film. Ben Cooke was a stunt performer hired to be doing stunts for episode 3. The one still that’s included in this video is very clearly the episode 3 mask. (Albeit perhaps a more rough stunt mask). If you put episode 2 and 3 kit fisto next to eachother you can see they’re done very differently. Episode actually has the actors own mouth free and painted to blend in with the prosthetic. Episode 3 has a very different mask that covers the entire face. I think these scenes were always Ben Cooke but the mask in the still is a stunt mask that isn’t glued down but perhaps allows more freedom. Maybe if more footage can be found we can know for sure, but I can’t imagine a crew member would be rehired to do specific stunt choreography imo.
@@charliejgoddard no there were photos of behind the scenes with fisto's ep3 style prosthetics on zach, but with 4 tentacles to the front like i said. right at 0:55 you can see this, the actor is also very tall- just like zach. the pics include the one that isn't here with the actor in the mask smiling while talking to someone on a cellphone, its clearly zach and the mask was from ep3.
This scene is described in the book, it's awesome. It details a lot more of the capabilities of Sidious... Him having a mastery of all light saber forms, and most impressively, his stunning speed. Would actually loved to have seen a more detailed version of this fight play out on screen.
@@JasonPerryman, no. In the novelization of RotS, it's mentioned that the reason Kit Fisto survived longer against Sidious than the other two was due to his extensive mastery of Shii-Cho and his extraordinary speed and reflexes, even for a Jedi Master. The only reason he was slain was because of a momentary lapse in judgment caused by Anakin's appearance, enabling Sidious to dispatch him. Windu, of course, was still just slightly better by a margin, using Vapaad to its' fullest extent, and the Shatterpoint ability to destroy Sidious' lightsaber after the latter had a moment of hesitation.
@@JasonPerryman I'm assuming you're okay with a bit of spoilers from the book if you're asking me this question. 😄 I can only really say that things play out a bit differently. The scene, like many others in the book, are given a lot more detail. For instance, the Dooku/Anakin duel was considerably longer in the book, going into Dooku's thought process and motivation a bit more. I guess that should be expected from a novel compared to a screenplay though. Sorry, got sidetracked 😅 The short answer is no. It goes somewhat like the movie. But it's up for debate whether Sidious let Windu "win"... Sidious decapitates, impales, and destroys two Jedi before dueling with Kit Fisto and Windu simultaneously. His speed was ridiculous and it appeared he was toying with/humiliating the Jedi almost. Mace even recognized at one point his Vaapad (form VII), which is itself a ferocious form of saber combat, could not overpower the sith. Some differences I can note in the novel are the brutal impaling and decapitation of the 2 Jedi in the beginning of combat, the 2 vs 1 with Kit and Windu against Sidious, Anakin is outside the window on a speeder watching all this go down instead on walking in last minute, and Windu cut the Dark Lord's saber instead of a kick to the face. At which point Sidious and Windu speak about fear (can't remember the conversation), instead of Sidious saying, "No, no, no... You will die!" Anyway... Long tangent, sorry. 😆 It's up for debate, but to answer your question, I think Sidious let's Windu "win" in both the movie and the novel. Not trying to discredit Windu, he was a ferocious fighter... But Sidious was on a whole different level.
How about instead of asking for unused content you believe was overlooked in an effort to patch the film you just ask for a remake of the film done in an actually compelling way.
I will say, Ian is such an insane actor that I really like the aggressive and evil grin on his face, the facial expressions as he fights, and the almost brutish and inelegant fighting style he used also. That said, the weak point is definitely that the first Jedi die so badly. A more choreographed fight but with still some of the close ups of Ian edited in really would have made this scene an all-timer. As it is, Ian alone makes this whole sequence my favorite thing in all the prequels.
It would have definitely seemed strange for Anakin to just stand by while Palpatine cut down a group of Jedi Masters. Cutting that part out was probably for the best.
The intention was probably to mirror Vader standing around like a menacing shadow in Return of the Jedi, while Palpatine tortures Luke. It would show his submission and enslavement by Palpatine's charme and promises (deal with the devil) in III while his liberation and emancipation from it in VI. Lucas said it multiple times himself, that all his six movies are deliberate mirrors of each other. ALL major plot points are mirror images of each other, from OT to PT. That was always his intention(....always as in at least 1997) And I actually understand the idea behind using Anakin's lightsaber. If Palpatine just carried around a lightsaber, or had it hidden in his office, the Jedi would have probably easily sensed it years ago. Not just from logical thought, but also considering that in Rogue One, Jirrut, an amateur force user, not even a Jedi, could sense the kyber crystal around Jyn's neck. And using wrong lightsaber hilts is pretty common in Star Wars. some stunt sabers use generic hilts while Grievous uses Obi Wan's and Anakin's during the fight with Kenobi. He has two of each, which even change color AND hands during the fight.
I would view it as Anakin evaluating how strong Palpatine is and being able to play both sides. If Palpatine gets defeated by Windu, maybe he can't help me would be the reasoning and if Windu defeats him, I'll be a Jedi Master and have access to the archive. It's a no lose situation.
@@louisstabile1182 You miss the point of Anakin joining Palpatine. He didn't give a shit about his combat skills. Anakin would have considered himself the strongest fighter anyways.(part of his entire downfall, his pride). No, Anakin only cared about the promise of saving Padme. That was it. Nothing else. Same goes for Dooku. He didn't join the Dark Side because of the power in combat that comes with it, but the ideology. Only Vader and the Emperor try to lure Luke to the Dark Side with the promise of better fighting skills. Which is, in hindsight, something that Lucas did much better in the prequels than the OT. The motive for joining the Dark Side was very underdeveloped and shallow/comic book villain like.
@@scockery Because at that point he remains loyal to the Jedis, but is in the next scene when he stared at Padme's apartment he knows that couldn't live without her, that's his undoing and if the Jedis kill Palpatine any chance of saving her will be lost; and confirm it in the next scene when he surrendered to Palpatine.
In the beginning of the duel you hear what sounds like an inhuman scream as Palpatine leapt toward the group of Jedi. In my head canon this was a dark force scream that temporarily stunned some of the Jedi, allowing Palpatine to kill them quickly.
That's kind of disappointing that Lucas didn't stick with the original plan for the Palpatine duel. The one they used in ROTS was good but I always thought it could have been better. Now I find out it was a bigger better plan originally 🙁
Not only that, but also his willingness to interact with fans. I've posed a few behind-the-scenes questions to several celebrities & industry insiders, but only received a reply from one. Surprisingly, it was an actor who replied and not one of the behind-the-scenes people.
Exactly. The director was the very source of the problem to begin with. What a colossal screw-up! Giving a 60 year old British thespian with no fencing (or any kind of martial art) training 15 minutes to shoot what should have been an epic scene was *_not_* one of Mr. Lucas' wiser decisions.
Fun fact: That iconic scene at 0:36 was only done by the stunt double wearing wires to give Ian McDiarmid an indication of the choreography he was supposed to perform. The scene as we see it in the final cut was actually just McDiarmid doing it by himself, no after effects or wiring needed. According to Lucas, he managed it on his first attempt, hence why the cut from him drawing his lightsaber and making the leap was a bit jarring. The first attempt was so good that they decided they just had to stick with it. It was worth the rough cut.
That was the lightsaber fight we deserved, but not the one we needed at the time I had no idea that the actor that played Palpatine had to learn that fight in 15 minutes, that’s rough
That's pitiful considering this one of the most anticipated films in decades and possibly one of the most important scenes to the fans. They only care about money
@Amp661 did you hear me praising Disney? No. I hate Disney trash pretending to be SW. That doesn't change the fact that Palpatine vs Jedi Masters was one of the most pathetically unconvincing fights in cinema history and Lucas' decision to change it at the absolute last minute was so absurdly stupid that it baffles me to this day that he thought it would be good to just scrap a carefully planned scene that had months of practice with trained stunt doubles and replace it with a quickly bodged together scene where an elderly man who's never used a sword in his life has less than 10 minutes to learn and perform choreography that's supposed to depict a highly skilled Sith Lord. The turds that are Disney SW do not make this abomination of a scene any less terrible.
It would be great to have that original scene, with stunt double fighting, but with Anakin coming in instead of having been there. The best of both worlds
Point of correction: the red robed guards weren't "royal" guards, they'd officially be the Chancellery Guard or Senate Guard, as the Galactic Republic hadn't been overthrown just yet.
I hate the OT special editions but PT SE would be interesting tbh with added deleted scenes and linger cuts perhaps. What I hope I could see before I die is that long mentioned 4 hour cut of ROTS which was supposedly amazing but way too long.
Damn, the originally planned fight is so much cooler. We get to see the jedi abuse a secretary, and thats when we finally see the Royal Guards in action. At that point, it actually would appear they are trying to protect a helpless Chancellor from Jedi out for blood. Then the actual duel being longer cause the other jedi just dont die immediately.
This is why I wanted so bad for the Clone Wars team to remake Revenge of The Sith. It's moments like this, where they could have really improved on it.
After watching/rewatching RotS many times and having a better appreciation each time for this particular movie, man its so sad this fight scene wasn't leveraged to the hilt for everything it was worth. For instance, just one of the master jedi cohort (any one of them) could be seen taking on all the royal guards at once (while the rest of the masters just casually strolled into Palp's chambers) showing the skill one master jedi has against even elite guards. And then the exact opposite happens where its clear all the masters need to team up to take on Palp (which we saw for just 1/2 sec in the actual movie). C'mon so much good potential here, the oppt was wasted.
We still really need to see the Royal Guard in live action doing a full fight, hopefully they stood toe to toe to the Jedi for more than a second before dying
Wow that's even more disappointing to realize the fight team actually had real choreography prepared, but ... Oh George They ended up doing face replacement in that scene anyway.
I would love to see more action from Fisto, it really is a shame how little screen time he got, and how quickly he was struck down. He is one of the best Jedi out there, but the films made it seem like he was nothing. At least he has more screen time and a few episodes mostly to himself in Star Wars The Clone Wars series.
As controversial as some moments of the special editions may be, I'd love if we could get special edition versions of the prequels. Fix some cgi, finish editing & add back in some deleted scenes, maybe a few reshoots or re-recorded dialogue here & there while most of the cast is still around... Cut out Jar Jar's poop & fart jokes from Episode 1
@@mh2120 Well actually a special edition kind of does exist for TPM already. Yoda got an update and the podrace was completely re-edited. It arguably was changed the most out of any Star Wars movie
Holy shit that original fight choreography looked like it would have been *LEGENDARY.* It just makes me even more upset that what we ended up getting turned out to be one of the worst scenes ever in the Star Wars movies.
I read the ROTS Novelization & it was awesome what happened in that book compared to the movie. Palpatine's force pulls his lightsaber which cuts the Jedi in half & then he also has an audio tape of him faking to beg for help.
I know right ? Doesn't it make sense to go with the novelisation ? Out of the 3 options (novel, director's cut, final cut) we get the worst one of all where 2 Jedi Master simply get stabbed
@@ronki23 Yeah it's lame & yes you're absolutely right. I love ROTS so much but that would have improved the movie so it's not perfect but it's still awesome.

He has also released more footage of deleted scenes never before seen. Star wars analyst is just reusing them and adding special effects.
People are talking about how the fans were robbed. What about McDiarmid? If I were a professional actor, I'd be pissed to be made to look like a complete twat because I wasn't properly trained for a scene. Oh you don't know how to use a sabre because we haven't trained you at all this year? You said Ian is a "classical Shakespearean actor with no experience in swordfighting". I find that hard to believe. I suggest you watch some Shakespeare plays.
While I think an extended fight scene would have been cool, I think the shorter one works better for the story. It demonstrates how powerful Sidious was (able to take down multiple Jedi Masters quickly) and shows how truly un-prepared the Jedi were; they thought it would be a simple fight, akin to fighting Count Dooku.
calling dooku a simple fight... clearly disney has addled your mind. dooku was the preeminent lightsaber duelist of that era, no one could best him in single combat. he was famed for it while in the order. he was the only living force user of that era to master form 2 a style dedicated to fighting against other lightsaber wielders, making him practically a hard counter to any jedi which is why palpatine grabbed him up as a temporary replacement apprentice for the decade surrounding the clone wars. his mastery of the force was rivaled only by yoda, and his mastery of the lightsaber was rivaled by none.
@@e.corellius4495Yeah, Dooku is clearly right behind Anakin in terms of power at this point. Which means he mopped the floor with all except 3 Jedi. Let's also remember that Sheev betrayed him at very last moment, 2 hands could have been replaced. But Anakin killing him was never part of the plan, as far as Dooku was concerned. People seem to forget that he held his own against Yoda, even if he decided to run in the end. For one, he would have stomped Maul, even in his 20s. The dark side made him stronger, according to Yoda. Or at least the general experience since they last saw each other did. The point is, Dooku was at his peak in his 80s. And he mopped the floor with everyone except his master and 3 Jedi (Yoda, Mace and Anakin). That makes him one of the strongest Force-sensitives in galactic history.
How do you people not understand that Dooku was not the preeminent lightsaber dualist. Mace. Windu. He was the greatest lightsaber dualist. The only user of Vapaad that didn't fall to the Dark Side.
@@jacobwalsh1888 It's not just about lightsabers, bro. Windu was not stronger than Yoda. And since Yoda stalemated Sheev, it's even possible that Sheev's loss against Mace was a ploy because he sensed Anakin arriving. Mace was never the top dog, George Lucas even confirmed this himself. He actually lost to Dooku in a sparring contest, before he turned to the dark side. Now, that doesn't say much since both of them got stronger later on. But Dooku was no joke.
@@StarWarsAnalyst Maybe this was Lucas descent into the endless changes madness that he kept making to to the movies. Seems so weird to organize a stunt double and then on the day of filming change his mind.
That's awesome Nick gives you information and content to share. It's hard to imagine how Lucas could have gotten this pivotal moment so wrong. Changing the fight and forcing Ian to do it not only made the fight pathetic, but also made the Jedi who went with Windu look beyond inept. I would love to have seen the duel we are getting glimpses of here.
60 year old with no experience who has to learn the fight in 15 minutes? or a professionally trained stunt double who spent the last 3 weeks practicing this exact choreography? I mean let’s cut George some slack it was a tough decision… NOT!

I do agree that they should have kept the original plan but I think that the version in the movie really shows how powerful yoda and sidious really are
I’ve seen multiple edits of the scene where they speed things up and cut out little extra movements and stuff and even just that makes it so much better. George really screwed the pooched on this scene.
I think it's worth noting that arguably the most objectionable part of this whole fight, being the part where Sidious stabs two Jedi who don't put up any fight, is still in Gillard's rendition (0:37).
Yeah but it looks more convincing in Nick's version as Palpatine is moving faster and the jedi actually swing at him and move a little, instead of literally just standing there.
That scene always disappointed me. 4 of the most experienced and powerful Jedi on our way to capture a Sith Lord so powerful he's hidden under our noses for over a decade, and we'll just stand there and get stabbed.
That sequence makes so much more sense now. Every time I watched that part I could never wrap my head around wtf just happened. Just a really, really bad decision to replace the people that had been practicing the fight with someone that didn’t know it just so you could get a few more closeups. That’s the whole reason that stunt doubles exist, to do the things the actors can’t. That’s the frustrating thing about GL; he’s done some amazing things, but some of his decisions are so bizarre and feel so amateurish.
This would’ve definitely been way better but we can give Lucas a pass. Also would’ve been so sick to see the royal guards fight… we never got to see them fight one single time in all of Star Wars yet everytime I saw them even as a kid I was always intrigued by them. Thought they looked so rad.
Thank-you. I remember watching the Lucas ‘changing it to McDiarmed fighting’ on the special features and could see he was being an unreasonable ****! They did only need him for the close ups!
Nick Gillard just said on recording that you are the reason he won’t post more behind the scenes content. Thanks for ruining it for the rest of us kid.
He is actually lying about quite a bit. Please read our actual exchange: ua-cam.com/users/shorts2oOsLUwO0Hw?feature=share Then he didn’t respond and months later I received 6 copyright strikes. That’s when I lashed out at him because I had specifically told him that if he had any issue with my videos I would remove them. Instead he ignored me and filed copyright strikes months later
Wow that version of the fight is 10 times better, I still would’ve changed Anakin being there, it’s so much more powerful with him having to make the decision to go.

Ian was so committed to the role that he actually became a Sith Lord in secret during filming. When he arrived on set that day, Lucas was so impressed by his command of the dark side that he insisted that Ian do all the stunts, including the flips.
The dark side is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be... unnatural..
While he had a stunt double for the actual fight, that's Ian using real force lighting against Samuel L. Jackson, who also really leapt off balcony to avoid further lightning-damage. Don't worry, Jackson is fine, he's a Jedi - landing from a high height is basic padawan stuff.

@@thegreatpage5912 They could have refilmed it without him there. Lucas wanted Ian to do it so that was that.

Yeah when you compare Nolan Batman fight scenes versus synder, synder does a better job but the overall story Nolan all the wy
I would love a 4 hour cut of Sith with all these extras, but i feel like Lucas understood the prequels needed to tone down the pointless action scenes which a lot of people complained about. The story doesn't need the Jedi to attack the guards or have a longer duel with Palpatine.
George Lucas f***** up on so many things in the Star Wars it's ridiculous
most of the good director stuff in his films tends to be done by others
George was good at creative visions but god awful at actually putting his vision to film
and in particular is really bad at both dialogue and romance
and as you see from his change the fight not the actor choice he is keen to make incredibly bad choices for scene formation
1:43 having both the royal and senate guard in one room would've been an awesome fight
It's even more ridiculous since they successfully used a stunt man to fight as Count Dooku with no problem.
Guess now we know it was never an error after all
There used to be an old video called Sidious Blue and the guy made a making of video where he explained all that stuff.
I wish it were still up today
Stuff like that ends up becoming very valuable over time because it’s rare. Star Wars merchandise especially.

@andrion waser no
Because mcdiarmid actually fighting at his age showed how raw palpatine was in power but how unpracticed he was in dueling which I think was lucas' goal and made it make more sense that mace out of everyone present was the only one who could stand against his ridiculous force power, as mace was a master duelist.
Mace is good and all but to me it still looks like Palps is just playing with his food. Mace for all his power and strength never once sensed who palps was. @@andymatheson82 "the way I see it jedi are only able to use laser swords in a world that has guns because the force guides them on where to place the light saber,"
Other then the fact that said force also enhances their reactions, physical capabilities, and gives them precognition not to mention that lightsabers would probably melt most bullets anyway and could easily just be "forced" away from the Jedi a lot easier compared to blasters (Not to mention blasters > bullets in most cases) the Jedi existing in a world with "guns" makes sense.
Context will help you land your shots
Now with that tangent out of the way, there books make Palpatines fight with Mace and the other Jedi a lot more exciting and Anime-ish which as you know translate poorly to live action. Oal had two goals in that fight: kill Mace and/or take anakin. He failed one

the first shooting of the scene in 03 with anakin there already, was done before fisto's actor was replaced from zach jensen to ben cooke who looks shorter (zach unavailable for reshoots maybe). it was also before fisto's prosthetics were altered slightly with the tentacles, final shoots having 2 of them arranged to the front instead of 4.
Ah I didn’t know this thank you
I’m not sure that’s true about the Kit Fisto actor being replaced after filming the original idea with anikan in the room.

This scene is described in the book, it's awesome. It details a lot more of the capabilities of Sidious... Him having a mastery of all light saber forms, and most impressively, his stunning speed. Would actually loved to have seen a more detailed version of this fight play out on screen.
Does he beat Windu in the lightsabre fight in the book?

I'm assuming you're okay with a bit of spoilers from the book if you're asking me this question. 😄
I can only really say that things play out a bit differently. The scene, like many others in the book, are given a lot more detail. For instance, the Dooku/Anakin duel was considerably longer in the book, going into Dooku's thought process and motivation a bit more. I guess that should be expected from a novel compared to a screenplay though.
Sorry, got sidetracked 😅
The short answer is no.
You will die!"
Anyway... Long tangent, sorry. 😆
It's up for debate, but to answer your question, I think Sidious let's Windu "win" in both the movie and the novel.
Not trying to discredit Windu, he was a ferocious fighter... But Sidious was on a whole different level.

@@kingpablothe1stoverlordoft871 He's asking for George's script to be patched up. George's script is stupid.
It makes me wonder why he goes and tells Mace Windu that Palpatine is a Sith Lord in the first place.
That was always his intention(....always as in at least 1997)
And I actually understand the idea behind using Anakin's lightsaber.
In my head canon this was a dark force scream that temporarily stunned some of the Jedi, allowing Palpatine to kill them quickly.
thats not even head canon, the Revenge novel basically says this
So cool that you'r in contact with Nick about this and able to retrieve these nuggets!
That's kind of disappointing that Lucas didn't stick with the original plan for the Palpatine duel. The one they used in ROTS was good but I always thought it could have been better. Now I find out it was a bigger better plan originally 🙁
Send all the praise you can to Nick. He's vision and knowledge made star wars even more epic.
I can’t thank him enough
Not only that, but also his willingness to interact with fans. I've posed a few behind-the-scenes questions to several celebrities & industry insiders, but only received a reply from one. Surprisingly, it was an actor who replied and not one of the behind-the-scenes people.

@@0megacron you should see what Nick Gillard said about Star Wars analyst lololoooo
We should ask for a director's extended cut of ROTS!
Yeees that would mean George would be in charge because he was the director
Exactly. The director was the very source of the problem to begin with. What a colossal screw-up! Giving a 60 year old British thespian with no fencing (or any kind of martial art) training 15 minutes to shoot what should have been an epic scene was *_not_* one of Mr. Lucas' wiser decisions.
It's very rare that I find new footage or photos and yet here you are! Keep up the great work!
George: Hi Ian, change of plans. Im going to need to have you do a flip for us today.
Ian: Excuse me?
Fun fact: That iconic scene at 0:36 was only done by the stunt double wearing wires to give Ian McDiarmid an indication of the choreography he was supposed to perform. The scene as we see it in the final cut was actually just McDiarmid doing it by himself, no after effects or wiring needed. According to Lucas, he managed it on his first attempt, hence why the cut from him drawing his lightsaber and making the leap was a bit jarring. The first attempt was so good that they decided they just had to stick with it. It was worth the rough cut.
Insane control over his body to do that without wired pulley assistance.
@@cattysplat For real. A true Shakespearean actor!
That was the lightsaber fight we deserved, but not the one we needed at the time
I had no idea that the actor that played Palpatine had to learn that fight in 15 minutes, that’s rough
That's pitiful considering this one of the most anticipated films in decades and possibly one of the most important scenes to the fans. They only care about money
That's rough and unprofessional by George Lucas.
@Amp661making that decision at the last minute is very unprofessional to the point of absurd.
It would actually be the other way around the fight we needed at the time, but not the fight we deserved.
This is 100x better than the orginal scene. Thanks for bringing this to light.
“You can’t change Ian, you gotta change the fight.” 🤦🏽♂️🗣️Dammit George!!😩
It would be great to have that original scene, with stunt double fighting, but with Anakin coming in instead of having been there. The best of both worlds
Point of correction: the red robed guards weren't "royal" guards, they'd officially be the Chancellery Guard or Senate Guard, as the Galactic Republic hadn't been overthrown just yet.
Those sequences were amazing! I can’t believe they cut it out! Smh
yea real lame george at the last minute basically decided to throw out the vast part of his films second most important fight
George: it looks too good, we've already payed for choreography, scratch that and give Ian few hours of prep and lets watch as he'll do it himself.
They should remake the prequel with all of these deleted scenes except the one with anakin being in palpatines office during the duel
I would ask for the "director's cut", but the director was exactly the problem to begin with!
@@WorthlessDeadEnd If you're trying to say Lucas is a bad director, then I would strongly reconsider my intelligence if I were you.
Calm down there bud, in this situation Lucas was the problem. The dude was a visionary but he also made a lot of bad decisions.
I hate the OT special editions but PT SE would be interesting tbh with added deleted scenes and linger cuts perhaps. What I hope I could see before I die is that long mentioned 4 hour cut of ROTS which was supposedly amazing but way too long.
@@BarberJ95 And how long is the beloved Snyder cut of the Justice League? I 😉
Once again, we are robbed of watching a lightsaber fight against the Royal Guards.
The Acolyte shows one of the best fighting scenes i ve ever seen in the StarWars Universe. Really great!
Ove always thought the way they portray that scene in Yoda's force visions is so much cooler than in the movie.
Revenge of the Sith is a Masterpiece
@@DayTripperrr I agree.
But imagine the "I am the senate" discussion being followed by THIS fight
@@DayTripperrr lol, no it was not!
That’s kind of insulting though. The thing is, no one on the Clone Wars team would ever want to do it.
Fun fact: Ian actually did that spinning move, and we hear his natural force scream voice.
Wow that's even more disappointing to realize the fight team actually had real choreography prepared, but ...
Oh George
They ended up doing face replacement in that scene anyway.
Good job.
It's such a shame there is no long director's cut of "Revenge of the Sith".
I know. Especially with most of Padme’s arc on the cutting room floor

No problem, twirl it around a bit, we'll have the other grandmasters trip into your pointy end, and bam, end scene. Here, practice waving it around for 10 minutes...and roll!
Lukas should've let the stunt doubles do the scene....smh.
In your opinion, do you think we will ever see a longer cut of this movie with all of this extra footage edited in?

Lol that’s a solid point now that I think about it but the quote actually comes from Rick McCallum the producer of Episode III 🤷🏻♂️
Wish Lucas was more like Peter Jackson and just included all the extra scenes in an extended edition
You can't change Ian, you gotta change the fight... i can't argue with that logic xd
They could’ve just did a digital face on the stunt double. That’s what they did for parts of Dooku’s fight too.

They honestly robbed us here. I never could stand 3 Jedi masters being taken out in a duel so quickly even against Sidious.
I do agree that they should have kept the original plan but I think that the version in the movie really shows how powerful yoda and sidious really are
waaaaaaaah, we were robbed, i wanted more lightsabre fights waaaaaaaaaah
I’ve seen multiple edits of the scene where they speed things up and cut out little extra movements and stuff and even just that makes it so much better. George really screwed the pooched on this scene.
I still loved the scene no matter what the silly faces he made while dueling mace are legendary haha
Due to this, the first time we actually got to see Darth Sidiuos in all of his coolness was in The Clone Wars
It KILLS me that we didn’t get to see this bad ass fight.
There are still people who apologize for Lucas. Unbelievable
