I have watched several videos on the a6700, and this is by far the best!! I am a disabled senior citizen photographer. I have been shooting with the a7RIV along with a number of heavy full-frame lenses. It’s getting harder and harder to carry the gear. I recently made a trip to Australia from the US with a 30lb backpack. It was way too much to carry. I have no choice other than to reduce the weight. The 6700 looks like the best option.

I just hiked mount Fuji with my full frame A7R3 and the sigma 50mm. Even that was a BEAR to carry around and hard to keep safe in my large hiking pack. Just order the 6700 to lose some weight! 😅

I feel this type of APS-C camera review is incomplete if the entire system is not addressed. How can someone effectively determine if the camera fits their needs if they are not familiar with the lens options currently available. I don’t think many of the reviewers have considered the purchasing decisions of many potential customers for this camera. There is an assumption they will know how the market has changed in the last four years since there last APS-C purchase or not be aware of the systems if they are new to the APS-C ILC format.

Thanks - the more time Sony can give me with a pre-production camera the more I can shoot before committing to the review. More reviewers need to include more real-world shooting into their reviews in my opinion but they are constrained by time, money and profit

@@AlphaCreativeSkills hello, I want to carry only one lens. I want it for hiking (I usually do whole day hikes, high elevation change/long hikes 10-30 km). What would you recommend? I thought about 18-105 f/4 or 18-135 (variable) or even something like 18-50 f/2.8 maybe even that 17-70 tamron. I want it to be pretty universal.
Well I am a wildlife photographer with the wonderful A1 and 400 GM, but there are times I want to travel light so the A6700 with a 70-350 lens is very tempting. At just over 1kg in weight I could carry almost everywhere including on business trips. Amazing it is a lighter set up than the Micro four third, although having considerably larger sensor.
There are probably smaller and lighter Micro Four Thirds lenses than the ones I showed but I really just wanted to get people thinking at this point in the video about size and weight. I think APS-C is the sweet spot for getting the quality that comes from a larger sensor but the option to use much smaller telephoto lenses than full frame. As well as the E 70-350 G I have just been shooting with Sony's new FE 70-200 F4 Macro G II and 1.4x teleconverter. This is giving me the reach of the 100-400 GM in a much smaller form factor - so much so that the A6700 with FE 70-200 attached fits vertically in my small Pilot 7L messenger bag.
@@AlphaCreativeSkills I do have the 70-200 F2.8 GMii, and will try using that lens maybe with 1.4x on the A6700. Gives a very usable 420mm at F4 in package well under 2kg
I share your obsession with photo kit weight and size, Mark. This is why never went for a full frame, not even the a7c, and I still use my a6500. Not for much longer. My dreams came true, finally, in the form of the a6700. Well, 99% true. I wish they kept the small pop up flush in it. I know, most people poo poo it for useless but I dare to disagree. Hi Mark. Thank you once again for a highly detailed video, that helps consumers make informed decisions about photography gear and photography itself. I just received my a6700 over the weekend and tested it. Coming from the a6400 which certainly worked well for me for the last 3 years, I did find that it was time to upgrade due to the AI, which I thought would give me an edge up for bird and wild life photography. I must say that it really does help and my pictures are in focus much more than before. Though one question that I would like to ask, if I may is that I noticed that when using eye detect in the photography mode, when a bird/animal is behind tree branches etc, the camera has a harder time focusing, as well as when you have let say a group of ducks it gets confused as to which duck you are trying to capture. Do you in these cases come out of wide and going to spot etc.. to help the camera focus better on the subject? Thanks again!

My lens recommendation: Tamron 18-300mm. The most versatile lens. Of course it's not the fastest, but perfect for traveling, wildlife and macro :-) I owned the Sony 70-350 G before. It's a great lens, but the 70mm made me switch my lenses more often than I wanted.
Good suggestion but I prefer the smaller and lighter Sony 18-135 as a lightweight travel lens, which has enough at the telephoto end for all but distant wildlife.
@@AlphaCreativeSkills The 18-135 is a superb little travel lens. But for wildlife (like a fox in 500 meters distance), even 300mm is quite the minimum for me. It's still much lighter and smaller than a full frame camera with the Sony 200-600mm :D
One of the advantage of the E-Mount cameras is that we have choice as Tamron and Sigma have both embraced the E-Mount for both Full Frame and APS-C lens design. This new A6700 camera should attract some more new lenses in the future.
So, I'm doing photography as a hobby for almost 15 years and still using old DSLR. I'm about to switch to Sony Ecosystem. On the beginning I was almost sure I will get a FF A7III with Sony 24-105 and Tamron 15-500. But then in my horizon A6700 showed up... Do you think that new ASPC body with new technology (autofocus mainly) will be better choice than over 5 y.o. A7III? Or should I get A7III with some FF lenses, and in the future just change the body for A7IV (or even A7V if it is going to be anouced)? I shoot whole variety of photos, starting from regular trips, to wildlife, street photo all the way to air shows and general plane spotting.

Superb presentation Mark, I have a Nikon D850 - but very heavy with lens for travel. I am looking for the best compact camera available to date, I came across your presentation on the A6700 and almost ticked all the boxes. One Question is the pros of the APS-C is much lighter, cheaper and more reach in the lenses. If I wanted a full frame Sony equivilant to the A6700 which one would you recomend?
The Sony A7C is Sony's compact full frame camera, but the additional size and weight of the full-frame lenses, compared to APS-C lenses, loses you the weight advantage of APS-C, when you factor in the entire kit. Choosing a full-frame camera with a high-resolution sensor does give you the opportunity to shoot with a full-frame camera in APS-C mode. If this was the route you would prefer to take then you need to choose an A7R or A1 camera ... or wait for an update to the existing ageing A7C. I have been saying for a couple of years now (while waiting for this A6700 camera) that Sony's best APS-C camera was either the A7RIV or A7RV in APS-C mode. I took the A7RV to India this year with one full frame zoom (FE 20-70) two lightweight APS-C lenses (E 70-350 and E 11mm F1.8) and one very small full frame prime (Sigma 90mm F2.8). You would get the same feature list as the A6700 by upgrading to the A7RV or you could make the switch to an A6700 if you don'y think you really need the 60 megapixels (few of us do). Sony Alpha Rumours seems to think there are two new A7C cameras coming so you may want to wait to see if one of these might change your mind about switching to an APS-C camera. I have shared 80 Raw files captured with an A6700 camera with my Patrons on my Patreon.com/markgaler support channel (to help them make this sort of decision). If you want to use these files you may like to consider switching your Google subscription for a Patreon one. you've highlighted both the Sony FE 85 f/1.8 and the Sigma 56mm f/1.4. On the A6700, which has the fastest continuous autofocus (AF-C) when stopped down in low light? Do i need to turn "live view "off for either, and/or revert to AP-S mode??? Does the A6700 backlight sensor make this a moot point now?

Yesterday I was the first customer, I was told, to collect an a6700 that just arrived to DigiDirect in Melbourne. I am discovering the camera is a fussy charger. In the evening I plugged it in to charge overnight. This morning the state of charge was 75% ?!?! I used the charger I had charged my a6500 from and a cable I use to charge my phone and tablet without any problems. So, I scratched my head and after a few permutations of chargers and cables I've found the right combination that works, I think. It is a Sony charger that came with an old Sony Xperia XA telephone plus a very short USB-C cable. Still, it seems hugely inconvenient that a set of a charger + cable that can charge my current phone (Google Pixel4a) may not work with the camera even though the phone battery is twice the capacity of the camera's. It's not a deal breaker but buyers beware.
I think the charger rather than the cable is not being liked by the camera. Here is why. The first (very slow) charging involved a universal four-port charger that I use to charge everything: phones, tablet, headphones, bluetooth speaker etc., including the old a6500 camera. When the new a6700 didn't get fully charged I picked up a Samsung charger that came with my Samsung tablet. With the same cable as before the camera didn't even blink the charging light. Then, I picked up a Sony branded charger with another (shorter just in case) cable, a combination that worked fine. Subsequently, I switched back to the original cable that with the Sony charger seemed to have worked fine. In summary, a universal charger and a Samsung charger didn't deliver the goods whereas a Sony charger worked no matter what cable was used. I'm not complaining. Just sharing my observations for the greater good ❤
@@AlphaCreativeSkills I want a better low light capability, an articulated screen because i don't see what I'm doing when I'm shooting just above the floor, a better dynamic, no video limit and better autofocus. Of course i regret that there is no joystick, the bad EVF, only one SD card slot and only 11 FPS.

Not even close. Don't be fooled. Nothing compares to life-like, close to screen look of full frame. Not to mention sharpness. 7 series aren't even heavy or big. Save your $1200

@AlphaCreativeSkills I've been a long time Sony user, a6000 back in 2017 and A73 soon after. But I've never been more pleased with photos I'm taking as I am with my newly acquired Canon 5d4. This old body has too many useful features that makes photography a joy, extremely intuitive touch function being one of them. And I'm finally able to get a proper grip. Photos look instantly interesting right out of the camera. There is no need to fix colors with Canon, everything looks natural. Skies look blue and vegetation green. Makes human subjects look like movie characters. I took photos in bright afternoon sunlight few days ago and I was blown away by them, they had character and depth despite harsh conditions.

I have invited Sony not to think of their APS-C cameras as budget versions of their full-frame cameras. For many APS-C users they offer lightweight travel alternatives that should not be seen as compromised cameras - constraints imposed by price.
@@AlphaCreativeSkills Mark, let them know we high end apsc shooters are out here. I was really hoping for an "A6" ie an A1 for apsc. Somthing that can do 8k 30p video, or at least 6k opengate. i am moving from an A7C to the A6700 because of the 10 bit video, and because most of the glass I use weights less than 500 grams and has a 67mm filter thread. This would include using GM lenses for my primes. (Would also love for them to do a 16mm GM. Last thing the a7c with the 2070/4 and 70200/4.2 compares favorably to the a6700 1655/2.8 and 70350. I could get either setup and went with the lighter one.

Nice review Mark, i'm trying to lighten my backpack too but for wildlife photography sometimes is not possible, currently I'm using the Sony A7 IV and the Sony 200-600mm G but I'm thinking that maybe that Sony a6700 + the Sony 100-400mm GM will give me the same reach with a more compact setup for taking my camera while hiking in the mountains, what do you think about that combo? Also, do you think the rolling shutter when silently shooting birds in flight will be worse in the a6700 than the A7IV? Thanks in advance
Don’t use silent shutter on either camera for birds in flight. Only the cameras using stacked sensors are up to this task. I own the 100-400 GM but have chosen to use the E 70-350 G OSS and now the 70-200 Macro + 1.4x Teleconverter in APS-C mode or with an APS-C camera for birds in flight when traveling light - as evidenced in this video, my 70-200 Macro video or the linked albums on my Flickr Pro account. A small correction: According to the official specifications, the a6600 is 66.9mm in height, so the a6700 is 2mm higher. The 69.3mm is for the depth (75.1mm for the a6700).
@@AlphaCreativeSkills I checked both the Danish and the UK Sony site - both confirming what I wrote. Another small correction: You state the AF works down to -4EV while the official specs says -3EV (to 20EV). I know it's nitpicking but you are officially representing Sony as an ambassador so embellishments like that on the specs may reflect "less favourably" on you and the brand. 🙂 I understand that specs can change last-minute, and the specs you had access to prior to release may have had incorrect info, but I'm just pointing it out here for people checking the comments.
Sony may not have left this feature off because of an oversight but because they envisaged more entry level users poking their fingers on the shutter and then making warranty claims. I personally would have added the feature however.
I was waiting for this camera for long long time. I have a6400 which has excellent autofocus system. The IBIS and 4k 60fps, 120fps , Touch screen with new sony menu, new enhanced autofocus system, 14bit raw makes sony a6700 complete package. looking to upgrade from a6400 to a6700 to pair my zeiss batis 40mm f2 cf lens. I am sure zeiss batis 40mm f2 cf lens + Sony a6700 will be a solid match.

Here in germany the a6700 is €1700 (tax included) but due to promotions you can get it with the 16-55mm and 70-350mm sony lenses for €2699 total. Looking to get my first "proper" camera for general photography and also recording sports stuff (table tennis matches since our previous "camera guy" left). Ive been told at that price i should be going for full frame like a second hand a7iii but i feel like an apsc will mean im more likely to take my camera places rather than letting it sit on a shelf as i get into the hobby. Not entirely sure which route to go down.

I am going to use the A6700 as my second camera for now because of the lighter APS-C lenses. Who knows when we will see the A7C ll and what features it may, or may not, have.

Thanks for sharing! Totally agree with all this. I recently switched from Full frame to APSc , the Fuji 56 f1.2mm wr and 90mm f2 are unbelievably sharp and paired with the latest Fuji 40mpx sensors, I am seeing better results compared to when I was shooting Full frame, quite remarkable
@@AlphaCreativeSkills from a portrait photographer Sony has made improvements with color science and skin tones and is a great camera for most applications, but if I was to stay with this format (APSc) I can’t look past Fuji for the above reasons, especially the skin tones and for fun you get the 19 film simulations for those times when you’re shooting just JPgs for social media
@@eliaspap8708 -colour science is a problematic term Canon coined for its flavour of Color used in its JPEG rendition. There is, however, NO science unless you create a custom profile for your own sensor. This is possible but is rarely undertaken by the vast majority of photographers. It is possible to make a Fuji and a Sony camera produce exactly the same (completely accurate) colours when shooting Raw by profiling the sensor.
Every scanner or camera sensor has its unique colour Gamut, it’s impossible to change the characteristics of this, Especially making it wider for a certain colour, I think I should know I this as I work as an engineer for Epson, you would think anyway 😊 I profile printers, scanners and papers quite often, The Fuji uses an X trans sensor array with no AA filter quite unique unlike most other cameras using Bayer, this is part of the reason, for me the subtle hues in the blues and reds are impressive and just not there when I was using Canon full frame, you can profile two different cameras to match each other that’s easy to do, but what you will be doing is dumbing or limiting one to match the other and I definitely wouldn’t want to dumb down or restrict the colour gamut of any camera, I’m sure you would agree.
Not sure I’ll personally be matching the large 200-600 with a compact APS-C camera. For birds in flight my camera of choice is the A1 and for larger wildlife I’ll just aim to get closer.

Due to limited testing time I have confined my wildlife and bird shots when using the A6700 to using the new FE 70-200 Macro G II + teleconverters. I see the A6700 as a lightweight travel camera and the 200-600 as a backpack and not a messenger bag lens.
Thanks for the overview Mark! For all intensive purposes, outside of being able to shoot 20 FPS and full frame with my original first gen A9, would you consider this camera an upgrade overall over the first gen A9? I feel like my first gen A9 is really getting outdated (no firmware updates for some time now)especially since the 6700 has SONY's new AI and focusing features found in the A7RM5.
The A6700 does not use a stacked sensor. The A6700 is an upgrade in every way except for the sensor. Focus acquisition is better on the A6700 but tracking, although excellent, may not be as good as your ageing A9.
Does the A6700 shoot 14-bit RAW in continuous-shooting mode? That's something that the a6600 didn't do. Wonderful, concise and informative review. Thank you.
14 Bit, as far as I am aware - like the Full Frame cameras using the same sensor design and imaging processors. Final confirmation will come when Sony release the user Manual. It’s a good question - one that the other reviewers didn’t think to ask. Compressed Raw will also result in 14 bit images if Sony follow on from their latest full frame cameras. Most of the reviewers also got the buffer capacity wrong because they tested in lossless compression Raw with the drive mode set to Hi+ instead of Hi (you always choose Hi when panning).

Here's the answer to why HI for panning. From the 6700 manual "The subject is not displayed in real-time on the monitor or viewfinder when shooting in [Continuous Shooting: Hi+] mode. "
Great video, thanks a lot. May I ask what you think of the Tamron 11-20 f2.8 in comparison to the Sony 10-20 f4.0? For me, the Tamron would also fit the new Sony a 6700 extremey well. What is your opinion about this?
I have tested the Sony but not the Tamron - some of the lens manufacturers are afraid to loan gear to a Sony Ambassador. My review period is also three weeks and a three day loan doesn’t work for me (that’s why you see more images in one of my reviews compared to all the others combined)
I was wondering if there is any more information on the A6700’s focus bracketing abilities? It’s a feature I’m really interested in for stacking macros, etc and that could convince me to sell up my m4/3rds gear.

I have used the 70-350 lens on an A7RIV, A7RV and A1 cameras when traveling light. The APS-C crop is a little tight when used on full frame bodies that have just 24 megapixels.

Mark, I’ve noticed that on one picture you’re using the 2x extender (SEL20TC). Very sharp as well. But what is the PDAF-limit of the A6700? Will the 2x TC work with the 200-600mm, like on an A9? I’ve tried searching but can’t seem to find any info on the PDAF-limit.
There are no longer PDAF limits on the very latest Alpha cameras. Tracking is, however, still mote reliable with brighter ambient conditions and brighter apertures. I provide personal support and guidance on my Patreon.com/markgaler support channel.
I was about to purchase one of these but found an A7R IV preowned for the same price - something to replace both my OG A7R and my A6000 (until now I have just been getting newer/better lenses rather than upgrading the body). Whilst I care about portability, the size difference isn't that big at all - its seem to me more the lenses that dictate portability and I can shoot 26mp on APSC mode with the A7R IV. I think the A7R IV being so cheap is the best argument against the A6700 - you can get pretty much the same specs in APSC mode but also a professional level full frame camera to boot. If you can live without the AI processor, which I don't really care too much about, it looks like a much better option.
I always said the A7RIV was the best Sony APS-C camera in 2020 If the A7RIV gives you want you need then that may well be the right choice for you. @@AlphaCreativeSkills Fair enough, I don't really use any of my cameras for video so most of those features are excess to requirements. Regardless, that still leaves the A7R V for those who want those features. Granted its a lot more money (which is why I have gone for the mark IV) but you still get "double the camera" (in terms of being able to use lenses natively) than the APSC.
Thanks for the great video about A6700. I will go from myA6600 to the A6700 as soon as it arrives in Sweden. Did you have the opportunity to test file transfer from the camera with the Creators App. I am interested in the possibility to transfer raw files wireless to my android smartphone. It works fine on my A7RV but as I understood that the A6700 don't have ftp support I am curious about the file transfer options in the app.
The connection is reliable and the transfer is OK but I am not using the Creators app for this purpose. I use Adobe's Creative Cloud and Dropbox for my cloud storage. Adobe's Lightroom on my iPad is by far and away the better option at the moment. My iPad running an M2 chip connects via USB 3.2 and transfers the files rapidly, directly to Lightroom where I can edit and sync them to my 2TB storage on the Adobe Cloud. Backups are made to an external Sandisk SSD running USB 3.2 and from my iPad to my dropbox account. My full travel workflows are outlined on my Patreon.com/markgaler support channel.
Hi Mark. Terrific review - thanks 😊. I took delivery of my a6700 a week ago, and I've noticed that the burst rate seems to vary between pretty good i.e. ~11FPS, as advertised, to diabolical (2~3FPS, before seemingly giving up shooting altogether). Admittedly, my SD card is a few years old now, but if its age was the cause of the bottleneck, wouldn't the burst rate always be slow? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated 🙏😊. I bought the a6700 this spring. I need it for travel/city and wildlife shooting. So far I've been to Istanbul and I needed all the three lenses I bought along with the camera: Sony's 16-55 f/2.8 and 15mm f/1.4 and Sigma's 10-18 f/2.8. What I sorely miss on e-mount now is a comparatively light and compact 50-150 f/2.8 G to complete my setup. The Sony 70-200 f/2.8 GM2 is way too big and expensive (and leaves a gap from 55-70mm) and the light, small and cheaper Sony 70-200 G lense is only f/4 and still leaves a gap. Neither Sigma nor Tamron offer what I need either. I reckon the market for high quality aps-c tele-lenses is just not big enough...
I'm glad Sony is continuing with the APS-C line of cameras. They suit me for travel and I have been using them since the NEX 7. I passed on the a6600 as an upgrade from my a6500 but the a6700 is more significant. I do wish it had a shutter to protect the sensor when changing lenses while out and about. It's a pain to to get dust on the sensor. My current work around it to carry to camera bodies to avoid changing lenses. All being said, I may well end up saving for new lenses first such as the new 70-200mm macro and the 15mm.
Mark, I own sony a7iii, and I use this camera as a family photographer, but I want something for travelling, something more compact and not that big, as mom with 2 kids I have already full hands. It is sony a6400 nowadays worth it or a6700? Or should I upgrade my sony a7iii? I don't wanna carry on trips same camera that I use for work
The A6400 if you are on a budget but the A6700 is four years ahead in technological advancements. The big size, weight and cost saving comes from the fact you will be using APS-C lenses. You could use these lenses on your A7III but you will be down to 10 megapixels - which doesn't give you much room to crop again in post.
If overheating is likely to be an issue in warm locations and extended shooting times, then I recommend investing in a fan that can be attached to the camera (these have become very popular accessories for videographers using these hybrid cameras to shoot extended movie clips). The FX-30 is a better choice for videographers that rarely shoot stills.
Hello: it would be great to compare the Image Quality of a Sony 100-400 G Master lens when shooting in 1) Sony A7III in APS-C Mode 2) Sony A7RV cropped at 26MB and 3) Sony A6700. I am unable to test this precise gear as I have not owned an A7III for many years and I do not recommend shooting in APS-C mode on the cameras with 24 megapixel sensors as the 10 megapixels is too close to my 4K output needs. I have an a 7 IV, I wanted a small body, but I didn't want to spend too much money. I bought a6700 and it's a great camera with fantastic AF and really great output. Put a 35/1.4 GM on it and you'll be amazed.
Informative and engaging video!! I have a6400, planning to upgrade it to a6700. Apart from AI noise reduction, does s6700 performs better in low light with its back illuminated sensor? Would love to see some real comparison on high iso on any old a6X00 vs a6700. BTW looking to get 85mm 1.8 FF lense. I believe it's good sharp lens even on apsc. Which one will have more shallow DOF (bokeh) with that lense wide opened: A Full Frame body or apsc?

I am updating from DSLR to Mirrorless and had already decided on the A6700 from a weight, size and affordability perspective (getting older, love travelling) - your video confirmed everything I had considered plus lots, lots more. The only difference was I was looking at the Sony 18-135 as opposed to the 16-55 you suggest, as its $1,000 (Aus) cheaper (though I appreciate not as fast a lens). What are your thoughts? I am not going to go with the 11mm yet (just 2 lens at the moment) simply because I can't afford it all in the one transaction. Looking forward to looking at your other UA-cam info, like your style. Must say, I get a little lost (OK, lots lost) in Full Frame to APS-C changes in focal length - any plain English info here would be great? There is no short answer to this question - the lens and camera are capable of capturing some amazingly sharp images. It therefore comes down to your capture workflows. Hi Mark, Hi all, I am an amateur macro photographer. I ve been involved with this exciting part over the last 3 years and I have reached a stage where I get results that I am happy with. My current equipment is an A7RIII and a6300 and the 90mm Sony macro, 90mm Laowa X2. Also the 200-600mm Sony, which I use (less frequently) for remote subjects. But for over 90% of all my involvement is spent with my 90mm Sony macro, bolted on my A7RIII I am constantly looking into new ways to improve my technique and have more keepers. The technique can be improved in two ways: a) equipment b) technique! (my skill as a photographer, understanding the way of light and so on!). Some may argue that "you don't have to have super expensive gear in order to achieve results..". To my understanding this has to do with how far you want to go and what your expectactions are. Personally I believe, if you are really serious about it, one needs both gear and skill. But I d rather not debate further into that, and I ask that you also stick to my questions below This will probably be a long read, so I hope you can bear with me As far as my skill as a photographer goes, that improves by the day, as I read, research and try different approaches and new settings in my camera, lighting, positioning and so on Here, in this thread, I would like to focus solely on equipment. Right now, I am considering either the A7R V or the a6700. Let me explain 1) MACRO (stills). As far as my primary use of my existing gear goes, I am mostly using the A7RIII + 90mm Sony. For the vast majority of cases, I have found myself having to crop on the final shots. Which kind of tells me that since I crop anyway, why do I need a FF body? What's more, my a6300 can produce slightly better IQ, since it is 24MP (vs the ~20MP of my A7RIII in APS-C mode). As for my other 90mm (Laowa), I use it very rarely, as due to the lack of in-lens stabilization (and my really shaky hands), it is almost impossible to work with, unless I m on a tripod. It is very likely that although it is a great lens, I might have to sell it 2) MACRO (video). Given the opportunity, I often find myself shooting video. My go-to is 4K (Super 35). Again, the a6300 can produce more crisp videos, as to my understanding although in theory the A7RIII also shooting Super 35, pixel bining takes a toll on the IQ 3) LANDSCAPE. Although very rare, I sometime bolt on my SIgma 14-24mm on the A7RIII and go shooting landscapes. For this work, as expected my FF body is superior So I m now considering purchasing either the A7R V or the a6700 My arguments for chosing the A7R V are the following: a) 2-1 solution (FF and APS-C). For most of my macro work, I can switch to APS-C and still enjoy 26MP (versus the 24MP on my a6300), thus with no loss in IQ. And for the times that I need the FF (e.g. landscape), I can also have that, all in a single body. At the same time I will be getting a high spec body, with better physical characteristics (i.e. improved weather sealing), more features to play with as my skills also progress. One of those features, has been something that is a real deal breaker for me - in body focus stacking. Only downside of going down this road is of course the (more than double) price. Right now, I can get the A7R V for 3800EUR (which is a great price here in Europe) If I was to go for the a6700, then it would mean replacing my existing a6300, but still keeping my A7RIII. The way I see it, the transition from the a6300 to the a6700, for my needs, it offers three important benefits. Focus stacking option, superior video capabilities compared to the A7R V, but also my a6300 (at least on paper - more on that later) and last but but not least - IBIS. But for sure I would have loved to have 4K60 for some of my shootings where the 24fps just isn't enough Now, onto the side-by-side comparison of my existing A7RIII / a6300 vs the A7R V / a6700 and from those, the questions towards you which I hope someone can confirm or reject IMAGE QUALITY of the A7R V in APS-C mode. Does the A7R V in crop mode can produce better image quality vs the a6300, due to its more MP count / smaller pixels? So this is a questio of shooting in APS-C mode in the FF, vs the native APS-C of the a6300. I would presume that the a6700 would produce exactly same result (with the A7R V in APS-C), due to the identical pixel density. Am I correct in these assumptions? VIDEO QUALITY. Assuming identical settings (Super 35 4K 24fps), both a6300/a6700 outperform the A7R V. For sure due to its massive MP count and rolling shutter, but also about the A7R V bound to shoot in pixel bining (can anyone confirm that?). I have tried really hard to establish what are the IQ differences between those bodies, but without reaching a reasonable explanation/conclusion. For example, if you google for "dpreview video stills tool", you will get to see some (studio obtained samples) of all four bodies in question. So in the tool I chose "4K HQ" for all four, and the results somewhat confused me. Although it is clear that my A7RIII was inferior to my a6300, those samples suggest that my a6300 is producing better Super 35 4K footage, even compared to the subsequent a6x00 models, including the a6700. And that doesn't make much sense, as on paper, the a6700 should be at least as good as the a6300 (and actually even better). But if you carefully look at those samples, I think you will too notice that the stills from the a6300 footage is a tad sharper in some areas of the frame. Which makes me wonder how reliable those DPreview samples are, although the studio conditions should be identical. In the case of the A7RIII / a6300 / a6700, the same lens was used (55m 1.8) and even bitrates are identical (100mbps) is used, with the exception of the a6700 which was recording in 240msps! Of course the a6700 produces better footage compared to A7RIII and A7RV, but it beats me why it can't also match the a6300. Is it because of the sensor? With the exception of the a6300 (CMOS), all other bodies use BSI-CMOS. As far as I am aware, pixel bining is affecting only the FF bodies. Can anyone rationalize what I am seeing in those samples? Are you aware of any other source that has video stills comparison that a different conclusion can be drawn upon? So, to sum up, positives for each option: A7R V: all-in-one body, somewhat inferior video footage (compared to a6700/a6300), cost a6700: should meet my needs/expectations for macro/video, not so ideal for landscape All things considered, I would have gone with the A7R V, but I m somewhat perplexed with regard to its video performance. Which - don't get me wrong - is great overall, but looking at the a6700, which also ticks most boxes. Looking at other vendors, I can also see some attractive solutions (e.g. Lumix DC-S1R, Nikon Z8), but given that I have already invested at the Sony ecosystem for the time being, I am not really willing to make a switch at this point

Its just that I was curious about why anyone hasn't commented on such an issue If you google for "dpreview video stills tool" - and you chose e.g. a6300 (4K UHD) vs a6700 (4K UHD), well, the a6300 footage is superior (at least to my eyes!) The setup claims to be on same lens/aperture etc So how can the much older a6300 produce better S35 4K video footage compared to this new a6700 is a mystery to me Both APS-C bodies claim to produce 4K from oversampled 6K However the a6300 is CMOS whilst the a6700 is BSI-CMOS. Could that be the difference? As far as pixel bining goes - I m not sure what's the case for the a6300/a6700 Have a nice day
Very comprehensive video, exactly what i needed to make up my mind on the a6700. Im a hobbyist photographer with only a Ricoh GRIIIx and i find the a6700 would be the perfect leverage camera for me to up my game to the money making -level. Truly incredible what kind of tech we got thesedays!
thanks for your video. I think this camera is very capable. what is your opinion on getting it including the kit lens? In our country if one buys this camera including the kit lens 16-50mm F3.5-5.6, one would pay approx $120 extra (converted). I thought of buying the15mm F1.4 as the main lens but then saw the kit is only $120 extra, so why not get this as well.
The 16-55 is OK but sometimes cameras stores bundle the 18-135 lens with an APS-C model which is a much better proposition. The 18-135 is an excellent travel lens and would be my preference over the 16-55. I outlined all my personal lens preferences in the review.

I have used various lenses for shooting Action/Sport depending on the amount of 'reach' required. Just be sure to check the lens has fast AF motors. A native Sony E-Mount lens will usually provide faster AF performance than a non-Sony lens. The fastest Sony telephoto lenses feature 'Linear XD focus motors', e.g., FE 70-200 F4 Macro OSS and E 70-350 G OSS. It is important to remember there is no one 'best camera' and no one 'best lens'.
Great overall review of the system, Mark. I am a new A6700 owner, having moved on from an A6500. One point, though. I own the Sigma 16mm and agree its pretty big for a wide angle lens, so read your recommendation to pass it by and go for the Sony 15mm with interest. It's twice the price! Isn't that worth a mention? All the reviews I've read place them on equal footing as regards image quality. I certainly have no complaints about mine. Any comments welcome.
I sometimes list comparative prices but don't think I need to constantly remind people that Sigma and Tamron lenses offer cheaper E-Mount alternatives, sometimes with lower specifications in regards to optical sharpness and lens features in order for them to be sold significantly cheaper. Very few reviewers are able to bench-test the optics and rarely post ultra high-definition examples. In lens reviews I will provide links to companies such as lensrentals who have bench tested the lens, when available, and I always provide a link to the ultra high-definition examples rather than make claims about a lens's performance. I have tested and like the Sigma 90mm but have also purchased and not reviewed the 56mm as I found it just performed down to its price point. Good but not great.
@@AlphaCreativeSkills I think you might be making something of a generalisation about third party lenses vs manufacters lenses here. I have both the Sony 10-20 and 70-350 that you recommended and love them. I also have the Sony 18-55 epz kit lens which is rubbish and the Sony 18-135, which is good enough for a holiday lens, but generally pretty unimpressive and quickly got rid of my Sony 55-210. On the other hand, my Viltrox 13mm f1.4 is outstanding, as are my full frame Sigma Art prime lenses and my Irix 15mm f2.4 and Samyan cine lenses. I trust reviews by the likes of Christopher Frost, Dustin Abbot and Gordon Laing and they certainly correlate to my own experience. Look at their reviews of the above and the Sigma 16mm Also intriguingly, I find my Sigma 56mm f1. 4 lens to be superbly sharp as supported by detailed reviews from the above and others. Maybe you've got a duff one. There are plenty of third party lenses out there that out-perform the oem ones and plenty of evidence to support this.
That's exactly what it was ...as I stated that I found the Sigma 90mm was impressive and the Sigma 56mm pretty average. Sony stopped making average lenses a few years back. The E PZ 16-50 is an old school APS-C lens which is from a time Sony relied on Zeiss to design their premium lenses for them. We haven't seen anything that average in recent years with the exception of the FE 50mm F1.8 which is slow focusing.
@@AlphaCreativeSkillsApologies, Mark. I quoted the old 18-55 Sony lens, when I meant the 16-50 pancake, which I have and is just as poor Forgive my error. It's very much current and bundled with the A6700, which really let's it down. The other bundled lens is the 18-135, which I have, is still very prominently in the catalogue and is rather less than stellar. I think it's a stretch to suggest that all Sony lenses other than that 50mm you mentioned are first class and unmatched by third party offerings and to casually dismiss the Sigma 16mm. I'll leave it at that. I'm entirely a fan of Sony gear, am a professional broadcast lighting camera operator on the UK, have an Fx30 with an Sony 18-105 f4 and an FS7 with a £3000 Sony E PZ 18-110 video lens, so I don't mind spending money when there are no competing alternatives. Let's put the disagreements to bed now. I totally admire your accurate and revealing review of the camera. Other non Sony, high quality lenses your subscribers may look out for are my newly aquired Sigma 18-50 f2.8 and 23mm f1. 4, not to mention the Tamron 17-70 f2. 8. Cheers. Keep up the good work.
I am hoping viewers will notice I make an effort to photograph subjects that will showcase the camera’s strengths. Some reviewers just don’t make an effort in the photo department.
That’s because they are all wrong and I am right. You don’t get the limitless buffer by shooting Raw+JPEG, Raw using Lossless compression or using a slow card. It is also important when shooting action/sports to use the Hi drive and not the Hi+ drive mode (otherwise you don’t get a live view in the Finder). I have had to correct many reviewers statements over the years. I have to be right as I publish eBooks for the cameras. Take a look at how many images some of the reviewers were showing you during their review. Most spend an hour or two shooting while it shoot for 3 weeks. Some reviewers don’t even leave their house.

Already knew about hi vs hi+ but could find nothing on the official specs to say what the buffer in raw was and I spent a good while searching. Reality is 55 is probably more than enough since it’s not 20fps but I couldn’t find any sources and you were the first to say more than 50.
Compelling video. Is there any benefit to get the A6700 over the A7RV in crop mode aside from 12 fps over 10 and 4k 120? If part of the reason to buying the A7RV was to build a lightweight APSC kit of say the 16-55 2.8 and 70-350 for light travel
@@AlphaCreativeSkills thank you for the reply. Basically I was going to re-buy the 100-400 with a 1.4 tc but I'm sure sony will drop a mkii along with mkii tc's. I don't want to drop that kind of money for that setup when in the near future its going to be superceded. My thoughts are the 70-350 will do for now as an unexpensive take anywhere in the car setup until the mkii's arrive. Once I have the new mkii's I will buy an A6700 for general use on drives. Being in the car with a FF setup isn't much fun shooting out the window. The 70-350 is perfect...

I would rather go with sigma or tamron. Sony 16-55 is a big and heavy lens, it makes this combo feel like a full frame camera. If you have a camera store not very far - try to compare these lenses side by side, that might affect your choice

Hi, I love this video. My only complaint is that the comparison between other camera brands is not really fair. It compares the APS-C 70-350 with an M4/3 100-400, while a much more comparable lens is the 100-300mm Panasonic or 75-300mm OM lens, that both weights less. For the Fuji the 70-300 is a lot more comparable to the 70-350 Sony than the Fuji 100-400, and weights less. Personally, Sony is probably still the best APS-C model on the market, but especially now Fuji is opening up the X mount to 3rd party this becomes more something of personal preference. Fuji in general makes very expensive and rather heavy APS-C lenses, so expensive and heavy that 3rd party full frame lenses are just as expensive and heavy in some cases. I also don't like that I have to use different software to demosaic the X trans output first. That Fuji has a native ISO > 100 also isn't great. But now that I can get my favorite third party lenses on both systems with the new Sigma 10-18 and Tamron 17-70, I could go for the 70-350 on Sony or 70-300 on Fuji and it is all about body preference.
I did my best with the short amount of time made available to me - the other reviewers rarely make an attempt to do any sort of comparison at all, as it is time-consuming. In fact most of the other reviewers spend only a small fraction of the time I spend shooting with the camera and they also don't share ultra high-definition images they captured. We are waiting for Lightroom to release Raw support for the A6700. I am using a pre-release version of Lightroom and enjoying shooting in Raw now. You can use the Monitor as a Touch Pad, which then behaves like a joystick (multiselector). This is not a stacked sensor that is found in the A1 and A9 cameras, so blackout is standard unless you shooting in Hi+ drive mode ...but then you don't have absolute live view in the EVF (same as every other camera that does not have a stacked sensor). I am a little confused. All of the Sony literature states that it can only shoot 59 raw compressed images at 11 fps before the buffer fills up. Am I reading this wrong?
All the other reviewers, I am afraid, are wrong - I can shoot until the card is full if I use compressed raw, the drive mode set to Hi instead of Hi+ and when using a fast cards. The other reviewers, unfortunately, often don’t know how to set up a Sony camera. I have tried correcting them in the comments to their videos but my comments get deleted.
Great updates but sad to not see the important sensors auto cover mode (like the other Sonys) when changing lenses as we know mirrorless sensors are prone to get full of dust spots. ;( may be time to upgrade my a6000 and a6500
I don't see that as a problem or deal breaker. I've never had issues of having dust specks when changing my A7 III lenses. You must live in a desert or some sort where you get those sand storms. Anyways regardless of sensor covers or not it teaches us to maintain our tools better, use a dust blower buy and use sensor swabs for cleaning.
Hi, is there a way that the camera can automatically start videoing when it detects movement. eg I want to video birds at a bird box feeding their young, can I put the camera on standby and it will detect the birds arriving and automatically start filming?

Full Frame cameras have approximately a one stop advantage over APS-C cameras. I would however use the A6700 with a bright aperture lens such as the E 11mm F1.8 or E 15mm F1.4. Would I best to go with a v90 like the Sony tough g .. and size wise .. would a 32 gb be enough for everyday photography in compressed raw.

This is one of the advantages of the new 70-20 Macro. All the Sony white lenses except for the original 70-200 F4 now take the Teleconverters. None of the black lenses are compatible with the Teleconverters.
Hey Mark, great breakdown. I notice a lot of people always reference the 1.5x crop when it comes to focal length as an advantage of an aps-c being able to effectively get longer reach in a smaller package; however, the 1.5x f stop adjustment is never mentioned. For example the 16-55 2.8 apsc in 35mm would be a 22-84.5 f4 thus the proper full frame comparison would be closer to the 24-105 f4 (not the 24-70 f2.8) which is a cheaper lens at approximately the same size. As a beginner trying to figure out if I should go with a full frame body vs apsc It seems a little misleading to me when people only convert the focal lengths but not the f stop reduction. Could you not just use an a7rv in apsc mode with a smaller focal length lens with a lower maximum aperture to effectively give you all the advantages of size and weight reduction of the a6700 assuming we are not factoring in cost differences?
Glad you liked it. Just for the record I didn’t compare the 16-55 F2.8 G with the 24-70 GM in this review. Unfortunately there are no F2 APS-C lenses. The full frame F4 G lenses are, as you mention, a better comparison. The 1.5 crop factor has to be applied to the aperture to determine depth of field but not exposure, so an F2.8 APS-C aperture will result in images being captured at half the ISO of a full frame F4 zoom.
Nice review Mark, I have an A9 and an A7RIV but want to get more into bird video and want to upgrade but this mix from the Sony parts bin isn't it. Rangefinder design, low quality evf, crappy screen and unimproved stabilisation combined with great focussing and good video is at best a mixed bag. I'm still waiting for the mini A1 semi-pro style body. I'm not confident Sony will deliver and am starting to look over the fence at the Nikon Z8 where I can at least use my lenses with the Megadep adapter. Only problem with that is weight (and cost) as I would like a lighter traveling kit.
Thanks - I will use this camera as a second camera to my A1. Bird in flight tracking is great for a camera that doesn’t have a stacked sensor. I personally don’t prioritise the peripherals such as monitor, finder or IBIS (not important when tracking birds) sensor design and subject recognition are my priorities, everything else is window dressing when I am looking for a high hit rate. Check out Alex Phan to see what he thinks about Nikon focusing (he uses Nikon and Sony systems to capture birds in flight) - last time I checked he still rated his A1 and Song glass as offering him the best performance
What are your thoughts on the astro capabilities of this camera considering its new sensor? I wanna upgrade from an old a6000 and i dont see any reason to go FF except that i like to take pictures of the stars from time to time, and the a6000 was always very noisy for this. Considering that now there’s a new A7Cr coming, which is the same weight as the a6700 and its kinda like having a FF and a APC-C camera at the same time, but much more expensive, should I wait for that one? Or is the a6700 with the SEL15F14g or the SEL11F18 sufficient enough? Thank you 🙏🏻
If you don't already own the 11mm F1.8 I would start there. As outlined in this review I think the sensor upgrade is step forward for these APS-C cameras.
With Sony saying this is not their top of the range APS-C camera it will be interesting to see if they put a APS-C sensor into a A7iv type body. Maybe even a stacked one

We are content providers using the Patreon platform (not managed by us). Problems logging in to your Patreon account have to be taken up with Patreon's support service. Problems can arise when passwords are forgotten or create card details are no longer valid. We can't cancel users Patreon accounts and we have no access to credit card details. Some users have simply created a new account using a different credit card after they have successfully canceled their original membership. The eBooks use a standard PDF format that can be opened with all versions of Acrobat Reader that were released after version 8.0 (which was released in 2006)
Your UA-cam reviews are the most informative and thorough, and your Patreon resources are even better. Thank you for all your hard work. I use A7RV and am wondering if there is a difference in quality (noise, readout speed) between APS-C mode on the A7RV and the newer 26 megapixel sensor in the a6700.
I expect the readout to be faster but the noise to be similar to the A7RV in APS-C mode. I don’t have the time to bench-test this gear as I have chosen to shoot on location instead (something that many reviewers don’t prioritise). As an Ambassador I can’t get away with opinions, so I have to present photographic evidence instead. Not everyone has worked this out yet and are seemingly unaware of how few photos are shown in many of the reviews.

@@AlphaCreativeSkills Sometimes I get the impression that talking about gear for many "photographers" has become more important than talking about taking photos in real life situations with certain cameras. The always asked question which system is better is for most photographers absolute irrelevant, once you have made up your decision for Sony or Canon or Fuji and you have invested in lenses you usually stick to that decision. I for example stick to Sony APS-C because of size and weight, and I'm happy with the quality. And then you need a good review about how to use your system best, what to expect of a new model compared to the old one. And you need example pictures to see what is possible with certain cameras and lenses. I've always valued your videos Mark for delivering just that, high quality information about the gear, tips for taking photos and good picture examples, not "test" photos but real life photos.

I have watched several videos on the a6700, and this is by far the best!! I am a disabled senior citizen photographer. I have been shooting with the a7RIV along with a number of heavy full-frame lenses. It’s getting harder and harder to carry the gear. I recently made a trip to Australia from the US with a 30lb backpack. It was way too much to carry. I have no choice other than to reduce the weight. The 6700 looks like the best option.

I just hiked mount Fuji with my full frame A7R3 and the sigma 50mm.

This is one of the best video I have ever seen about a6700 and even sony alpha aspc system.
I feel this type of APS-C camera review is incomplete if the entire system is not addressed. How can someone effectively determine if the camera fits their needs if they are not familiar with the lens options currently available. I don’t think many of the reviewers have considered the purchasing decisions of many potential customers for this camera. There is an assumption they will know how the market has changed in the last four years since there last APS-C purchase or not be aware of the systems if they are new to the APS-C ILC format.

This looks amazing- not quite ready to upgrade yet but this will certainly be on the shortlist! I can imagine a lot of a6xxxx users trading in their bodies for this when it’s available. I thought about 18-105 f/4 or 18-135 (variable) or even something like 18-50 f/2.8 maybe even that 17-70 tamron. I want it to be pretty universal.
Well I am a wildlife photographer with the wonderful A1 and 400 GM, but there are times I want to travel light so the A6700 with a 70-350 lens is very tempting. At just over 1kg in weight I could carry almost everywhere including on business trips. Amazing it is a lighter set up than the Micro four third, although having considerably larger sensor.
There are probably smaller and lighter Micro Four Thirds lenses than the ones I showed but I really just wanted to get people thinking at this point in the video about size and weight. I think APS-C is the sweet spot for getting the quality that comes from a larger sensor but the option to use much smaller telephoto lenses than full frame. As well as the E 70-350 G I have just been shooting with Sony's new FE 70-200 F4 Macro G II and 1.4x teleconverter. This is giving me the reach of the 100-400 GM in a much smaller form factor - so much so that the A6700 with FE 70-200 attached fits vertically in my small Pilot 7L messenger bag.
@@AlphaCreativeSkills I do have the 70-200 F2.8 GMii, and will try using that lens maybe with 1.4x on the A6700. Gives a very usable 420mm at F4 in package well under 2kg
I share your obsession with photo kit weight and size, Mark. This is why never went for a full frame, not even the a7c, and I still use my a6500. Not for much longer. My dreams came true, finally, in the form of the a6700. Well, 99% true. I wish they kept the small pop up flush in it. I know, most people poo poo it for useless but I dare to disagree. Hi Mark. Thank you once again for a highly detailed video, that helps consumers make informed decisions about photography gear and photography itself. I just received my a6700 over the weekend and tested it. Coming from the a6400 which certainly worked well for me for the last 3 years, I did find that it was time to upgrade due to the AI, which I thought would give me an edge up for bird and wild life photography. I must say that it really does help and my pictures are in focus much more than before. Though one question that I would like to ask, if I may is that I noticed that when using eye detect in the photography mode, when a bird/animal is behind tree branches etc, the camera has a harder time focusing, as well as when you have let say a group of ducks it gets confused as to which duck you are trying to capture. Do you in these cases come out of wide and going to spot etc.. to help the camera focus better on the subject? Thanks again!

My lens recommendation: Tamron 18-300mm. The most versatile lens. Of course it's not the fastest, but perfect for traveling, wildlife and macro :-) I owned the Sony 70-350 G before. It's a great lens, but the 70mm made me switch my lenses more often than I wanted.
Good suggestion but I prefer the smaller and lighter Sony 18-135 as a lightweight travel lens, which has enough at the telephoto end for all but distant wildlife.
@@AlphaCreativeSkills The 18-135 is a superb little travel lens. But for wildlife (like a fox in 500 meters distance), even 300mm is quite the minimum for me. It's still much lighter and smaller than a full frame camera with the Sony 200-600mm :D
One of the advantage of the E-Mount cameras is that we have choice as Tamron and Sigma have both embraced the E-Mount for both Full Frame and APS-C lens design. This new A6700 camera should attract some more new lenses in the future.
So, I'm doing photography as a hobby for almost 15 years and still using old DSLR. I'm about to switch to Sony Ecosystem. On the beginning I was almost sure I will get a FF A7III with Sony 24-105 and Tamron 15-500. But then in my horizon A6700 showed up... Do you think that new ASPC body with new technology (autofocus mainly) will be better choice than over 5 y.o. A7III? Or should I get A7III with some FF lenses, and in the future just change the body for A7IV (or even A7V if it is going to be anouced)? I shoot whole variety of photos, starting from regular trips, to wildlife, street photo all the way to air shows and general plane spotting.
I would choose this A6700 over an A7III but this is a complex decision based on dozens of personal preferences. I also own an A1 with full frame lenses. The decisions mainly rest on personal shooting preferences and I can support you with making this decision on Patreon.com/markgaler

Superb presentation Mark, I have a Nikon D850 - but very heavy with lens for travel. I am looking for the best compact camera available to date, I came across your presentation on the A6700 and almost ticked all the boxes. One Question is the pros of the APS-C is much lighter, cheaper and more reach in the lenses. If I wanted a full frame Sony equivilant to the A6700 which one would you recomend?
The Sony A7C is Sony's compact full frame camera, but the additional size and weight of the full-frame lenses, compared to APS-C lenses, loses you the weight advantage of APS-C, when you factor in the entire kit. Choosing a full-frame camera with a high-resolution sensor does give you the opportunity to shoot with a full-frame camera in APS-C mode. If this was the route you would prefer to take then you need to choose an A7R or A1 camera ... or wait for an update to the existing ageing A7C. I have been saying for a couple of years now (while waiting for this A6700 camera) that Sony's best APS-C camera was either the A7RIV or A7RV in APS-C mode. I took the A7RV to India this year with one full frame zoom (FE 20-70) two lightweight APS-C lenses (E 70-350 and E 11mm F1.8) and one very small full frame prime (Sigma 90mm F2.8). You would get the same feature list as the A6700 by upgrading to the A7RV or you could make the switch to an A6700 if you don'y think you really need the 60 megapixels (few of us do). Sony Alpha Rumours seems to think there are two new A7C cameras coming so you may want to wait to see if one of these might change your mind about switching to an APS-C camera. I have shared 80 Raw files captured with an A6700 camera with my Patrons on my Patreon.com/markgaler support channel (to help them make this sort of decision). If you want to use these files you may like to consider switching your Google subscription for a Patreon one. There are no contracts or commitments so you could alternatively just join for one month and download the eBooks for the A7RIV and A6700 cameras, the Raw files and the Camera Setup files and then unsubscribe.
you've highlighted both the Sony FE 85 f/1.8 and the Sigma 56mm f/1.4. On the A6700, which has the fastest continuous autofocus (AF-C) when stopped down in low light? Do i need to turn "live view "off for either, and/or revert to AP-S mode??? Does the A6700 backlight sensor make this a moot point now?

Yesterday I was the first customer, I was told, to collect an a6700 that just arrived to DigiDirect in Melbourne. I am discovering the camera is a fussy charger. In the evening I plugged it in to charge overnight. This morning the state of charge was 75% ?!?! I used the charger I had charged my a6500 from and a cable I use to charge my phone and tablet without any problems. So, I scratched my head and after a few permutations of chargers and cables I've found the right combination that works, I think. It is a Sony charger that came with an old Sony Xperia XA telephone plus a very short USB-C cable. Still, it seems hugely inconvenient that a set of a charger + cable that can charge my current phone (Google Pixel4a) may not work with the camera even though the phone battery is twice the capacity of the camera's. It's not a deal breaker but buyers beware.
I have not encountered this problem using my USB-C cable I use to download data and charge.
I think the charger rather than the cable is not being liked by the camera. Here is why. The first (very slow) charging involved a universal four-port charger that I use to charge everything: phones, tablet, headphones, bluetooth speaker etc., including the old a6500 camera. When the new a6700 didn't get fully charged I picked up a Samsung charger that came with my Samsung tablet. With the same cable as before the camera didn't even blink the charging light. Then, I picked up a Sony branded charger with another (shorter just in case) cable, a combination that worked fine. Subsequently, I switched back to the original cable that with the Sony charger seemed to have worked fine. In summary, a universal charger and a Samsung charger didn't deliver the goods whereas a Sony charger worked no matter what cable was used. I'm not complaining. Just sharing my observations for the greater good ❤

I don’t know what your priorities are but I will certainly be upgrading from my A6600. These cameras have advanced enormously since the A6500.

Of course i regret that there is no joystick, the bad EVF, only one SD card slot and only 11 FPS.

@AlphaCreativeSkills I've been a long time Sony user, a6000 back in 2017 and A73 soon after. But I've never been more pleased with photos I'm taking as I am with my newly acquired Canon 5d4. This old body has too many useful features that makes photography a joy, extremely intuitive touch function being one of them. And I'm finally able to get a proper grip. Photos look instantly interesting right out of the camera. There is no need to fix colors with Canon, everything looks natural. Skies look blue and vegetation green. Makes human subjects look like movie characters. I took photos in bright afternoon sunlight few days ago and I was blown away by them, they had character and depth despite harsh conditions.

I have invited Sony not to think of their APS-C cameras as budget versions of their full-frame cameras. For many APS-C users they offer lightweight travel alternatives that should not be seen as compromised cameras - constraints imposed by price.
@@AlphaCreativeSkills Mark, let them know we high end apsc shooters are out here. I was really hoping for an "A6" ie an A1 for apsc. Somthing that can do 8k 30p video, or at least 6k opengate. i am moving from an A7C to the A6700 because of the 10 bit video, and because most of the glass I use weights less than 500 grams and has a 67mm filter thread. This would include using GM lenses for my primes. (Would also love for them to do a 16mm GM.
Last thing the a7c with the 2070/4 and 70200/4.2 compares favorably to the a6700 1655/2.8 and 70350. I could get either setup and went with the lighter one.

Nice review Mark, i'm trying to lighten my backpack too but for wildlife photography sometimes is not possible, currently I'm using the Sony A7 IV and the Sony 200-600mm G but I'm thinking that maybe that Sony a6700 + the Sony 100-400mm GM will give me the same reach with a more compact setup for taking my camera while hiking in the mountains, what do you think about that combo? Also, do you think the rolling shutter when silently shooting birds in flight will be worse in the a6700 than the A7IV? Thanks in advance
Don’t use silent shutter on either camera for birds in flight. Only the cameras using stacked sensors are up to this task. I own the 100-400 GM but have chosen to use the E 70-350 G OSS and now the 70-200 Macro + 1.4x Teleconverter in APS-C mode or with an APS-C camera for birds in flight when traveling light - as evidenced in this video, my 70-200 Macro video or the linked albums on my Flickr Pro account. A small correction: According to the official specifications, the a6600 is 66.9mm in height, so the a6700 is 2mm higher. The 69.3mm is for the depth (75.1mm for the a6700).

Another small correction: You state the AF works down to -4EV while the official specs says -3EV (to 20EV). I know it's nitpicking but you are officially representing Sony as an ambassador so embellishments like that on the specs may reflect "less favourably" on you and the brand. 🙂 I understand that specs can change last-minute, and the specs you had access to prior to release may have had incorrect info, but I'm just pointing it out here for people checking the comments.
How hard is it to close the shutter at power off? Surely just software? Every Sony camera I use always gets more dust on the sensor than other brands.

Sony may not have left this feature off because of an oversight but because they envisaged more entry level users poking their fingers on the shutter and then making warranty claims. I personally would have added the feature however.
I was waiting for this camera for long long time. I have a6400 which has excellent autofocus system. The IBIS and 4k 60fps, 120fps , Touch screen with new sony menu, new enhanced autofocus system, 14bit raw makes sony a6700 complete package. looking to upgrade from a6400 to a6700 to pair my zeiss batis 40mm f2 cf lens. I am sure zeiss batis 40mm f2 cf lens + Sony a6700 will be a solid match.

Here in germany the a6700 is €1700 (tax included) but due to promotions you can get it with the 16-55mm and 70-350mm sony lenses for €2699 total. Looking to get my first "proper" camera for general photography and also recording sports stuff (table tennis matches since our previous "camera guy" left).
Ive been told at that price i should be going for full frame like a second hand a7iii but i feel like an apsc will mean im more likely to take my camera places rather than letting it sit on a shelf as i get into the hobby.

I am going to use the A6700 as my second camera for now because of the lighter APS-C lenses. Who knows when we will see the A7C ll and what features it may, or may not, have.

Thanks for sharing! Totally agree with all this. I recently switched from Full frame to APSc , the Fuji 56 f1.2mm wr and 90mm f2 are unbelievably sharp and paired with the latest Fuji 40mpx sensors, I am seeing better results compared to when I was shooting Full frame, quite remarkable

@@eliaspap8708 -colour science is a problematic term Canon coined for its flavour of Color used in its JPEG rendition. There is, however, NO science unless you create a custom profile for your own sensor. This is possible but is rarely undertaken by the vast majority of photographers. It is possible to make a Fuji and a Sony camera produce exactly the same (completely accurate) colours when shooting Raw by profiling the sensor.
Every scanner or camera sensor has its unique colour Gamut, it’s impossible to change the characteristics of this, Especially making it wider for a certain colour, I think I should know I this as I work as an engineer for Epson, you would think anyway 😊 I profile printers, scanners and papers quite often, The Fuji uses an X trans sensor array with no AA filter quite unique unlike most other cameras using Bayer, this is part of the reason, for me the subtle hues in the blues and reds are impressive and just not there when I was using Canon full frame, you can profile two different cameras to match each other that’s easy to do, but what you will be doing is dumbing or limiting one to match the other and I definitely wouldn’t want to dumb down or restrict the colour gamut of any camera, I’m sure you would agree.

Not sure I’ll personally be matching the large 200-600 with a compact APS-C camera. For birds in flight my camera of choice is the A1 and for larger wildlife I’ll just aim to get closer.

I'm looking seriously at the 6700 and Zeiss Touit 32mm. I reckon that's perfect for the small '50mm rangefinder' thing.
Check out the AF performance of the Zeiss lens compared to the excellent, and highly regarded, Sony FE 35mm F1.8 full frame lens.

Hi mark what do you think of Sony a6700 with 200-600mm for wildlife photography for still bird shot and bird in flight at 900mm any advise thank.
Due to limited testing time I have confined my wildlife and bird shots when using the A6700 to using the new FE 70-200 Macro G II + teleconverters. I see the A6700 as a lightweight travel camera and the 200-600 as a backpack and not a messenger bag lens.

For all intensive purposes, outside of being able to shoot 20 FPS and full frame with my original first gen A9, would you consider this camera an upgrade overall over the first gen A9? I feel like my first gen A9 is really getting outdated (no firmware updates for some time now)especially since the 6700 has SONY's new AI and focusing features found in the A7RM5.
The A6700 does not use a stacked sensor. The A6700 is an upgrade in every way except for the sensor. Focus acquisition is better on the A6700 but tracking, although excellent, may not be as good as your ageing A9.
Does the A6700 shoot 14-bit RAW in continuous-shooting mode? That's something that the a6600 didn't do. Wonderful, concise and informative review. Thank you.
14 Bit, as far as I am aware - like the Full Frame cameras using the same sensor design and imaging processors. Final confirmation will come when Sony release the user Manual. It’s a good question - one that the other reviewers didn’t think to ask. Compressed Raw will also result in 14 bit images if Sony follow on from their latest full frame cameras. Most of the reviewers also got the buffer capacity wrong because they tested in lossless compression Raw with the drive mode set to Hi+ instead of Hi (you always choose Hi when panning).

I have tested the Sony but not the Tamron - some of the lens manufacturers are afraid to loan gear to a Sony Ambassador. My review period is also three weeks and a three day loan doesn’t work for me (that’s why you see more images in one of my reviews compared to all the others combined)

The Samyang 75mm f/1.8 full frame lens is less than half the weight. Someone could do better than Viltrox.
The Samyang on an A7C would be delivering the same equivalent depth of field in a smaller and lighter form factor.

I have used the 70-350 lens on an A7RIV, A7RV and A1 cameras when traveling light. The APS-C crop is a little tight when used on full frame bodies that have just 24 megapixels.

I was about to purchase one of these but found an A7R IV preowned for the same price - something to replace both my OG A7R and my A6000 (until now I have just been getting newer/better lenses rather than upgrading the body).
Whilst I care about portability, the size difference isn't that big at all - its seem to me more the lenses that dictate portability and I can shoot 26mp on APSC mode with the A7R IV.
I think the A7R IV being so cheap is the best argument against the A6700 - you can get pretty much the same specs in APSC mode but also a professional level full frame camera to boot. If you can live without the AI processor, which I don't really care too much about, it looks like a much better option.
I always said the A7RIV was the best Sony APS-C camera in 2020

Regardless, that still leaves the A7R V for those who want those features. Granted its a lot more money (which is why I have gone for the mark IV) but you still get "double the camera" (in terms of being able to use lenses natively) than the APSC.

Thanks for the great video about A6700. I will go from myA6600 to the A6700 as soon as it arrives in Sweden. Did you have the opportunity to test file transfer from the camera with the Creators App. I am interested in the possibility to transfer raw files wireless to my android smartphone. It works fine on my A7RV but as I understood that the A6700 don't have ftp support I am curious about the file transfer options in the app.
The connection is reliable and the transfer is OK but I am not using the Creators app for this purpose. I use Adobe's Creative Cloud and Dropbox for my cloud storage. Adobe's Lightroom on my iPad is by far and away the better option at the moment. My iPad running an M2 chip connects via USB 3.2 and transfers the files rapidly, directly to Lightroom where I can edit and sync them to my 2TB storage on the Adobe Cloud. Backups are made to an external Sandisk SSD running USB 3.2 and from my iPad to my dropbox account. My full travel workflows are outlined on my Patreon.com/markgaler support channel.

I took delivery of my a6700 a week ago, and I've noticed that the burst rate seems to vary between pretty good i.e. ~11FPS, as advertised, to diabolical (2~3FPS, before seemingly giving up shooting altogether). Admittedly, my SD card is a few years old now, but if its age was the cause of the bottleneck, wouldn't the burst rate always be slow?

I bought the a6700 this spring. I need it for travel/city and wildlife shooting. So far I've been to Istanbul and I needed all the three lenses I bought along with the camera: Sony's 16-55 f/2.8 and 15mm f/1.4 and Sigma's 10-18 f/2.8.
What I sorely miss on e-mount now is a comparatively light and compact 50-150 f/2.8 G to complete my setup. The Sony 70-200 f/2.8 GM2 is way too big and expensive (and leaves a gap from 55-70mm) and the light, small and cheaper Sony 70-200 G lense is only f/4 and still leaves a gap. Neither Sigma nor Tamron offer what I need either. I reckon the market for high quality aps-c tele-lenses is just not big enough...
The A6700 is selling well so lets hope we see some new APS-C lenses

I'm glad Sony is continuing with the APS-C line of cameras. They suit me for travel and I have been using them since the NEX 7. I passed on the a6600 as an upgrade from my a6500 but the a6700 is more significant. I do wish it had a shutter to protect the sensor when changing lenses while out and about. It's a pain to to get dust on the sensor. My current work around it to carry to camera bodies to avoid changing lenses. All being said, I may well end up saving for new lenses first such as the new 70-200mm macro and the 15mm.

Mark, I own sony a7iii, and I use this camera as a family photographer, but I want something for travelling, something more compact and not that big, as mom with 2 kids I have already full hands. It is sony a6400 nowadays worth it or a6700? Or should I upgrade my sony a7iii? I don't wanna carry on trips same camera that I use for work
The A6400 if you are on a budget but the A6700 is four years ahead in technological advancements. The big size, weight and cost saving comes from the fact you will be using APS-C lenses. You could use these lenses on your A7III but you will be down to 10 megapixels - which doesn't give you much room to crop again in post.

If overheating is likely to be an issue in warm locations and extended shooting times, then I recommend investing in a fan that can be attached to the camera (these have become very popular accessories for videographers using these hybrid cameras to shoot extended movie clips). The FX-30 is a better choice for videographers that rarely shoot stills.
Hello: it would be great to compare the Image Quality of a Sony 100-400 G Master lens when shooting in 1) Sony A7III in APS-C Mode 2) Sony A7RV cropped at 26MB and 3) Sony A6700. I am unable to test this precise gear as I have not owned an A7III for many years and I do not recommend shooting in APS-C mode on the cameras with 24 megapixel sensors as the 10 megapixels is too close to my 4K output needs. I have an a 7 IV, I wanted a small body, but I didn't want to spend too much money. I bought a6700 and it's a great camera with fantastic AF and really great output. Put a 35/1.4 GM on it and you'll be amazed.

I am updating from DSLR to Mirrorless and had already decided on the A6700 from a weight, size and affordability perspective (getting older, love travelling) - your video confirmed everything I had considered plus lots, lots more. The only difference was I was looking at the Sony 18-135 as opposed to the 16-55 you suggest, as its $1,000 (Aus) cheaper (though I appreciate not as fast a lens). What are your thoughts?
I am not going to go with the 11mm yet (just 2 lens at the moment) simply because I can't afford it all in the one transaction.

There is no short answer to this question - the lens and camera are capable of capturing some amazingly sharp images. It therefore comes down to your capture workflows. I am an amateur macro photographer. I ve been involved with this exciting part over the last 3 years and I have reached a stage where I get results that I am happy with. My current equipment is an A7RIII and a6300 and the 90mm Sony macro, 90mm Laowa X2. Also the 200-600mm Sony, which I use (less frequently) for remote subjects. But for over 90% of all my involvement is spent with my 90mm Sony macro, bolted on my A7RIII
I am constantly looking into new ways to improve my technique and have more keepers. The technique can be improved in two ways: a) equipment b) technique! (my skill as a photographer, understanding the way of light and so on!). Some may argue that "you don't have to have super expensive gear in order to achieve results..". To my understanding this has to do with how far you want to go and what your expectactions are. Personally I believe, if you are really serious about it, one needs both gear and skill. But I d rather not debate further into that, and I ask that you also stick to my questions below
This will probably be a long read, so I hope you can bear with me
As far as my skill as a photographer goes, that improves by the day, as I read, research and try different approaches and new settings in my camera, lighting, positioning and so on
Here, in this thread, I would like to focus solely on equipment. Right now, I am considering either the A7R V or the a6700. Let me explain
1) MACRO (stills). As far as my primary use of my existing gear goes, I am mostly using the A7RIII + 90mm Sony. For the vast majority of cases, I have found myself having to crop on the final shots. Which kind of tells me that since I crop anyway, why do I need a FF body? What's more, my a6300 can produce slightly better IQ, since it is 24MP (vs the ~20MP of my A7RIII in APS-C mode). As for my other 90mm (Laowa), I use it very rarely, as due to the lack of in-lens stabilization (and my really shaky hands), it is almost impossible to work with, unless I m on a tripod. It is very likely that although it is a great lens, I might have to sell it
2) MACRO (video). Given the opportunity, I often find myself shooting video. My go-to is 4K (Super 35). Again, the a6300 can produce more crisp videos, as to my understanding although in theory the A7RIII also shooting Super 35, pixel bining takes a toll on the IQ
3) LANDSCAPE. Although very rare, I sometime bolt on my SIgma 14-24mm on the A7RIII and go shooting landscapes. For this work, as expected my FF body is superior
So I m now considering purchasing either the A7R V or the a6700
My arguments for chosing the A7R V are the following: a) 2-1 solution (FF and APS-C). For most of my macro work, I can switch to APS-C and still enjoy 26MP (versus the 24MP on my a6300), thus with no loss in IQ. And for the times that I need the FF (e.g. landscape), I can also have that, all in a single body. At the same time I will be getting a high spec body, with better physical characteristics (i.e. improved weather sealing), more features to play with as my skills also progress. One of those features, has been something that is a real deal breaker for me - in body focus stacking. Only downside of going down this road is of course the (more than double) price. Right now, I can get the A7R V for 3800EUR (which is a great price here in Europe)
If I was to go for the a6700, then it would mean replacing my existing a6300, but still keeping my A7RIII. The way I see it, the transition from the a6300 to the a6700, for my needs, it offers three important benefits. Focus stacking option, superior video capabilities compared to the A7R V, but also my a6300 (at least on paper - more on that later) and last but but not least - IBIS. But for sure I would have loved to have 4K60 for some of my shootings where the 24fps just isn't enough
Now, onto the side-by-side comparison of my existing A7RIII / a6300 vs the A7R V / a6700 and from those, the questions towards you which I hope someone can confirm or reject
IMAGE QUALITY of the A7R V in APS-C mode. Does the A7R V in crop mode can produce better image quality vs the a6300, due to its more MP count / smaller pixels? So this is a questio of shooting in APS-C mode in the FF, vs the native APS-C of the a6300. I would presume that the a6700 would produce exactly same result (with the A7R V in APS-C), due to the identical pixel density. Am I correct in these assumptions?
VIDEO QUALITY. Assuming identical settings (Super 35 4K 24fps), both a6300/a6700 outperform the A7R V. For sure due to its massive MP count and rolling shutter, but also about the A7R V bound to shoot in pixel bining (can anyone confirm that?). I have tried really hard to establish what are the IQ differences between those bodies, but without reaching a reasonable explanation/conclusion. For example, if you google for "dpreview video stills tool", you will get to see some (studio obtained samples) of all four bodies in question. So in the tool I chose "4K HQ" for all four, and the results somewhat confused me. Although it is clear that my A7RIII was inferior to my a6300, those samples suggest that my a6300 is producing better Super 35 4K footage, even compared to the subsequent a6x00 models, including the a6700. And that doesn't make much sense, as on paper, the a6700 should be at least as good as the a6300 (and actually even better). But if you carefully look at those samples, I think you will too notice that the stills from the a6300 footage is a tad sharper in some areas of the frame. Which makes me wonder how reliable those DPreview samples are, although the studio conditions should be identical. In the case of the A7RIII / a6300 / a6700, the same lens was used (55m 1.8) and even bitrates are identical (100mbps) is used, with the exception of the a6700 which was recording in 240msps! Of course the a6700 produces better footage compared to A7RIII and A7RV, but it beats me why it can't also match the a6300. Is it because of the sensor? With the exception of the a6300 (CMOS), all other bodies use BSI-CMOS. As far as I am aware, pixel bining is affecting only the FF bodies. Can anyone rationalize what I am seeing in those samples? Are you aware of any other source that has video stills comparison that a different conclusion can be drawn upon?
So, to sum up, positives for each option:
A7R V: all-in-one body, somewhat inferior video footage (compared to a6700/a6300), cost
a6700: should meet my needs/expectations for macro/video, not so ideal for landscape
All things considered, I would have gone with the A7R V, but I m somewhat perplexed with regard to its video performance. Which - don't get me wrong - is great overall, but looking at the a6700, which also ticks most boxes. Looking at other vendors, I can also see some attractive solutions (e.g. Lumix DC-S1R, Nikon Z8), but given that I have already invested at the Sony ecosystem for the time being, I am not really willing to make a switch at this point

If you google for "dpreview video stills tool" - and you chose e.g. a6300 (4K UHD) vs a6700 (4K UHD), well, the a6300 footage is superior (at least to my eyes!)
The setup claims to be on same lens/aperture etc
So how can the much older a6300 produce better S35 4K video footage compared to this new a6700 is a mystery to me
Both APS-C bodies claim to produce 4K from oversampled 6K
However the a6300 is CMOS whilst the a6700 is BSI-CMOS. Could that be the difference?
As far as pixel bining goes - I m not sure what's the case for the a6300/a6700

Very comprehensive video, exactly what i needed to make up my mind on the a6700. Im a hobbyist photographer with only a Ricoh GRIIIx and i find the a6700 would be the perfect leverage camera for me to up my game to the money making -level. Truly incredible what kind of tech we got thesedays!

thanks for your video. I think this camera is very capable. what is your opinion on getting it including the kit lens? In our country if one buys this camera including the kit lens 16-50mm F3.5-5.6, one would pay approx $120 extra (converted).
I thought of buying the15mm F1.4 as the main lens but then saw the kit is only $120 extra, so why not get this as well.
The 16-55 is OK but sometimes cameras stores bundle the 18-135 lens with an APS-C model which is a much better proposition. The 18-135 is an excellent travel lens and would be my preference over the 16-55. I outlined all my personal lens preferences in the review.

Good Video ! What Lens for sport photography ?
I have used various lenses for shooting Action/Sport depending on the amount of 'reach' required. Just be sure to check the lens has fast AF motors. A native Sony E-Mount lens will usually provide faster AF performance than a non-Sony lens. The fastest Sony telephoto lenses feature 'Linear XD focus motors', e.g., FE 70-200 F4 Macro OSS and E 70-350 G OSS. Great overall review of the system, Mark. I am a new A6700 owner, having moved on from an A6500. One point, though. I own the Sigma 16mm and agree its pretty big for a wide angle lens, so read your recommendation to pass it by and go for the Sony 15mm with interest. It's twice the price! Isn't that worth a mention? All the reviews I've read place them on equal footing as regards image quality. I certainly have no complaints about mine. Any comments welcome.
I sometimes list comparative prices but don't think I need to constantly remind people that Sigma and Tamron lenses offer cheaper E-Mount alternatives, sometimes with lower specifications in regards to optical sharpness and lens features in order for them to be sold significantly cheaper. Very few reviewers are able to bench-test the optics and rarely post ultra high-definition examples. In lens reviews I will provide links to companies such as lensrentals who have bench tested the lens, when available, and I always provide a link to the ultra high-definition examples rather than make claims about a lens's performance.
I have tested and like the Sigma 90mm but have also purchased and not reviewed the 56mm as I found it just performed down to its price point. Good but not great.
@@AlphaCreativeSkills I think you might be making something of a generalisation about third party lenses vs manufacters lenses here. I have both the Sony 10-20 and 70-350 that you recommended and love them. I also have the Sony 18-55 epz kit lens which is rubbish and the Sony 18-135, which is good enough for a holiday lens, but generally pretty unimpressive and quickly got rid of my Sony 55-210. On the other hand, my Viltrox 13mm f1.4 is outstanding, as are my full frame Sigma Art prime lenses and my Irix 15mm f2.4 and Samyan cine lenses. I trust reviews by the likes of Christopher Frost, Dustin Abbot and Gordon Laing and they certainly correlate to my own experience. Look at their reviews of the above and the Sigma 16mm Also intriguingly, I find my Sigma 56mm f1. 4 lens to be superbly sharp as supported by detailed reviews from the above and others. Maybe you've got a duff one. There are plenty of third party lenses out there that out-perform the oem ones and plenty of evidence to support this.
That's exactly what it was ...as I stated that I found the Sigma 90mm was impressive and the Sigma 56mm pretty average.
Sony stopped making average lenses a few years back. The E PZ 16-50 is an old school APS-C lens which is from a time Sony relied on Zeiss to design their premium lenses for them. We haven't seen anything that average in recent years with the exception of the FE 50mm F1.8 which is slow focusing.
@@AlphaCreativeSkillsApologies, Mark. I quoted the old 18-55 Sony lens, when I meant the 16-50 pancake, which I have and is just as poor Forgive my error. It's very much current and bundled with the A6700, which really let's it down. The other bundled lens is the 18-135, which I have, is still very prominently in the catalogue and is rather less than stellar. I think it's a stretch to suggest that all Sony lenses other than that 50mm you mentioned are first class and unmatched by third party offerings and to casually dismiss the Sigma 16mm. I'll leave it at that. I'm entirely a fan of Sony gear, am a professional broadcast lighting camera operator on the UK, have an Fx30 with an Sony 18-105 f4 and an FS7 with a £3000 Sony E PZ 18-110 video lens, so I don't mind spending money when there are no competing alternatives. Let's put the disagreements to bed now. I totally admire your accurate and revealing review of the camera. Other non Sony, high quality lenses your subscribers may look out for are my newly aquired Sigma 18-50 f2.8 and 23mm f1. 4, not to mention the Tamron 17-70 f2. 8. Cheers. Keep up the good work.

Can you confirm the buffer in raw? Everything I can read or watch suggests 55-59. Not limitless
That’s because they are all wrong and I am right. You don’t get the limitless buffer by shooting Raw+JPEG, Raw using Lossless compression or using a slow card. It is also important when shooting action/sports to use the Hi drive and not the Hi+ drive mode (otherwise you don’t get a live view in the Finder). I have had to correct many reviewers statements over the years. I have to be right as I publish eBooks for the cameras. Take a look at how many images some of the reviewers were showing you during their review. Most spend an hour or two shooting while it shoot for 3 weeks. Some reviewers don’t even leave their house.

I shoot sports as a hobby. Already knew about hi vs hi+ but could find nothing on the official specs to say what the buffer in raw was and I spent a good while searching.
Reality is 55 is probably more than enough since it’s not 20fps but I couldn’t find any sources and you were the first to say more than 50.

Is there any benefit to get the A6700 over the A7RV in crop mode aside from 12 fps over 10 and 4k 120?
If part of the reason to buying the A7RV was to build a lightweight APSC kit of say the 16-55 2.8 and 70-350 for light travel

Basically I was going to re-buy the 100-400 with a 1.4 tc but I'm sure sony will drop a mkii along with mkii tc's. I don't want to drop that kind of money for that setup when in the near future its going to be superceded.
My thoughts are the 70-350 will do for now as an unexpensive take anywhere in the car setup until the mkii's arrive.
Once I have the new mkii's I will buy an A6700 for general use on drives. Being in the car with a FF setup isn't much fun shooting out the window. The 70-350 is perfect...

I would rather go with sigma or tamron. Sony 16-55 is a big and heavy lens, it makes this combo feel like a full frame camera. If you have a camera store not very far - try to compare these lenses side by side, that might affect your choice
The 16-70 Tamron is bigger and heavier (as outlined in my review). If you want lighter weight and more range check out the 18-135 from Sony.

Hi, I love this video. My only complaint is that the comparison between other camera brands is not really fair. It compares the APS-C 70-350 with an M4/3 100-400, while a much more comparable lens is the 100-300mm Panasonic or 75-300mm OM lens, that both weights less. For the Fuji the 70-300 is a lot more comparable to the 70-350 Sony than the Fuji 100-400, and weights less.
Personally, Sony is probably still the best APS-C model on the market, but especially now Fuji is opening up the X mount to 3rd party this becomes more something of personal preference. Fuji in general makes very expensive and rather heavy APS-C lenses, so expensive and heavy that 3rd party full frame lenses are just as expensive and heavy in some cases. I also don't like that I have to use different software to demosaic the X trans output first. That Fuji has a native ISO > 100 also isn't great. But now that I can get my favorite third party lenses on both systems with the new Sigma 10-18 and Tamron 17-70, I could go for the 70-350 on Sony or 70-300 on Fuji and it is all about body preference.
I did my best with the short amount of time made available to me - the other reviewers rarely make an attempt to do any sort of comparison at all, as it is time-consuming. In fact most of the other reviewers spend only a small fraction of the time I spend shooting with the camera and they also don't share ultra high-definition images they captured. We are waiting for Lightroom to release Raw support for the A6700. I am using a pre-release version of Lightroom and enjoying shooting in Raw now. I made the A6700 ebook available on my Patreon.com/markgaler support channel the day the camera was announced. You can use the Monitor as a Touch Pad, which then behaves like a joystick (multiselector). This is not a stacked sensor that is found in the A1 and A9 cameras, so blackout is standard unless you shooting in Hi+ drive mode ...but then you don't have absolute live view in the EVF (same as every other camera that does not have a stacked sensor). I am a little confused. All of the Sony literature states that it can only shoot 59 raw compressed images at 11 fps before the buffer fills up. Am I reading this wrong?
All the other reviewers, I am afraid, are wrong - I can shoot until the card is full if I use compressed raw, the drive mode set to Hi instead of Hi+ and when using a fast cards. The other reviewers, unfortunately, often don’t know how to set up a Sony camera. I have tried correcting them in the comments to their videos but my comments get deleted.
Great updates but sad to not see the important sensors auto cover mode (like the other Sonys) when changing lenses as we know mirrorless sensors are prone to get full of dust spots.

This is α hugely significant update compared to the A6500 with its slow card slot, USB 2 in/out port and none backlit illuminated
I don't see that as a problem or deal breaker. I've never had issues of having dust specks when changing my A7 III lenses. You must live in a desert or some sort where you get those sand storms.
Anyways regardless of sensor covers or not it teaches us to maintain our tools better, use a dust blower buy and use sensor swabs for cleaning.
Hi, is there a way that the camera can automatically start videoing when it detects movement. eg I want to video birds at a bird box feeding their young, can I put the camera on standby and it will detect the birds arriving and automatically start filming?
You would have to research separate triggers to use in conjunction with most cameras - including the A6700

Full Frame cameras have approximately a one stop advantage over APS-C cameras. I would however use the A6700 with a bright aperture lens such as the E 11mm F1.8 or E 15mm F1.4.

No it doesnt work with that lense
This is one of the advantages of the new 70-20 Macro. All the Sony white lenses except for the original 70-200 F4 now take the Teleconverters. None of the black lenses are compatible with the Teleconverters.
Hey Mark, great breakdown. I notice a lot of people always reference the 1.5x crop when it comes to focal length as an advantage of an aps-c being able to effectively get longer reach in a smaller package; however, the 1.5x f stop adjustment is never mentioned. For example the 16-55 2.8 apsc in 35mm would be a 22-84.5 f4 thus the proper full frame comparison would be closer to the 24-105 f4 (not the 24-70 f2.8) which is a cheaper lens at approximately the same size. As a beginner trying to figure out if I should go with a full frame body vs apsc It seems a little misleading to me when people only convert the focal lengths but not the f stop reduction. Could you not just use an a7rv in apsc mode with a smaller focal length lens with a lower maximum aperture to effectively give you all the advantages of size and weight reduction of the a6700 assuming we are not factoring in cost differences?
Glad you liked it. Just for the record I didn’t compare the 16-55 F2.8 G with the 24-70 GM in this review. Unfortunately there are no F2 APS-C lenses. The full frame F4 G lenses are, as you mention, a better comparison. The 1.5 crop factor has to be applied to the aperture to determine depth of field but not exposure, so an F2.8 APS-C aperture will result in images being captured at half the ISO of a full frame F4 zoom.

Nice review Mark, I have an A9 and an A7RIV but want to get more into bird video and want to upgrade but this mix from the Sony parts bin isn't it. Rangefinder design, low quality evf, crappy screen and unimproved stabilisation combined with great focussing and good video is at best a mixed bag. I'm still waiting for the mini A1 semi-pro style body. I'm not confident Sony will deliver and am starting to look over the fence at the Nikon Z8 where I can at least use my lenses with the Megadep adapter. Only problem with that is weight (and cost) as I would like a lighter traveling kit.
Thanks - I will use this camera as a second camera to my A1. Bird in flight tracking is great for a camera that doesn’t have a stacked sensor. I personally don’t prioritise the peripherals such as monitor, finder or IBIS (not important when tracking birds) sensor design and subject recognition are my priorities, everything else is window dressing when I am looking for a high hit rate. Check out Alex Phan to see what he thinks about Nikon focusing (he uses Nikon and Sony systems to capture birds in flight) - last time I checked he still rated his A1 and Song glass as offering him the best performance
What are your thoughts on the astro capabilities of this camera considering its new sensor? I wanna upgrade from an old a6000 and i dont see any reason to go FF except that i like to take pictures of the stars from time to time, and the a6000 was always very noisy for this. Considering that now there’s a new A7Cr coming, which is the same weight as the a6700 and its kinda like having a FF and a APC-C camera at the same time, but much more expensive, should I wait for that one? Or is the a6700 with the SEL15F14g or the SEL11F18 sufficient enough? Thank you 🙏🏻
If you don't already own the 11mm F1.8 I would start there. As outlined in this review I think the sensor upgrade is step forward for these APS-C cameras.
With Sony saying this is not their top of the range APS-C camera it will be interesting to see if they put a APS-C sensor into a A7iv type body. Maybe even a stacked one

We are content providers using the Patreon platform (not managed by us). Problems logging in to your Patreon account have to be taken up with Patreon's support service. Problems can arise when passwords are forgotten or create card details are no longer valid. We can't cancel users Patreon accounts and we have no access to credit card details. Some users have simply created a new account using a different credit card after they have successfully canceled their original membership.
The eBooks use a standard PDF format that can be opened with all versions of Acrobat Reader that were released after version 8.0 (which was released in 2006)
Your UA-cam reviews are the most informative and thorough, and your Patreon resources are even better. Thank you for all your hard work. I use A7RV and am wondering if there is a difference in quality (noise, readout speed) between APS-C mode on the A7RV and the newer 26 megapixel sensor in the a6700.
I expect the readout to be faster but the noise to be similar to the A7RV in APS-C mode. I don’t have the time to bench-test this gear as I have chosen to shoot on location instead (something that many reviewers don’t prioritise). As an Ambassador I can’t get away with opinions, so I have to present photographic evidence instead. Not everyone has worked this out yet and are seemingly unaware of how few photos are shown in many of the reviews.

@@AlphaCreativeSkills Sometimes I get the impression that talking about gear for many "photographers" has become more important than talking about taking photos in real life situations with certain cameras. The always asked question which system is better is for most photographers absolute irrelevant, once you have made up your decision for Sony or Canon or Fuji and you have invested in lenses you usually stick to that decision. I for example stick to Sony APS-C because of size and weight, and I'm happy with the quality.
And then you need a good review about how to use your system best, what to expect of a new model compared to the old one. And you need example pictures to see what is possible with certain cameras and lenses. I've always valued your videos Mark for delivering just that, high quality information about the gear, tips for taking photos and good picture examples, not "test" photos but real life photos.
