  • This is a fun and easy Tunisian Crochet pattern for a slouchy beanie. It's cute, it's thick and warm and it can be for men or women. We'll be doing Tunisian Smock stitch in the round so grab your double pointed hook and let's make something!
This is the first time I have written a pattern down in steps. I am more of a visual learner so pictures and video are my normal means of teaching, but I have recently been asked to write things down for my subscribers who prefer patterns. I do not pretend to be a pattern writer and these stitches can be hard to put into words but I will do my level best. The pattern is below. If you see things I should change, please let me know (with kindness) in the comments and I will fix it. Also if you would like written patterns for my other videos, tell me and I will go back and create some.
    The Slouchy Tunisian Smock Beanie
Materials (Amazon Affiliate Links where useful):
Double Pointed Tunisian Crochet Hook Size J 6mm: amzn.to/3yjAqdL
    Regular Crochet Hook Size H 5mm: amzn.to/3dIPsSJ
    Scissors
    Tapestry Needle
    Stitch Markers
    Measuring Tape
Pom Pom or Faux Fur Pom (optional): amzn.to/2V71fUo
2 Colors of Worsted Weight Yarn
I used a solid color for the brim and mesh (Color A)
And a multicolor or self-striping for behind the mesh (Color B)
    Step 1:
    Starting Ribbed Stitch Brim
With Color A and 5 mm Hook
Foundation Single Crochet (FSC) to 2" in length
Chain 1 and turn (Now crocheting down length of 2")
Single Crochet (SC) in Back Loops Only (BLO) in every stitch
    Chain 1 and turn
Repeat until brim is desired length (Child 16", Teen 17", Adult "19)
Make sure you have an even number of rows
Bring the short ends togther Slip Stitch (SS) to join going through Outside Loops Only
This should give a fairly invisible seam
Chain 1 and turn so you will be working at the top of the ribbed brim now
The ribs of the brim below should vertical.
Round 1: Place 3 SC for every 2 rows from below (see video for placement if needed).
Make sure you have an odd number of stitches.
SS to join in first SC of round.
    Step 2:
Change to Double Pointed Tunisian 6 mm Hook
Round 2: Tunisian Knit Stitch (TKS) through the top two loops of the Single Crochet (SC) below it. Load the hook with as many as you comfortably can.
Turn work and do return pass with Color B using the back hook (See video for more help). Turn work back and continue loading hook and doing return
pass until round is complete. Do not join.
Round 3: Tunisian Knit Stitch (TKS) as you normally would using Color A to load front of hook, Turn and use Color B on return pass with back hook.
    Do not join.
Round 4: Begin Tunisian Smock Stitch. Smock Stitch is done by combining a Tunisian Simple Stitch 2 Together (TSS2TOG) but then adding a Yarn Under (YU).
    As Follows:
Load next 2 vertical bars onto your hook, Yarn Over, Pull through both bars (That is TSS2TOG)
Yarn Under and place your index finger on the yarn to hold it momentarily while you do the next TSS2TOG, then let go, Yarn Under and repeat
The yarn from the lower row should create a point where the two vertical bars come together and above that you are creating a sort of U or V shape on top.
You are essentially decreasing but then adding back to increase so your stitch count doesn't change. (See Video).
Continue until the end of the round.
Round 5: As you continue your Smock Stitch on this round, your TSS2TOG should be the last half of the U shape created below
and the first half of the next U shape over. Which will form a sort of scale look or honeycomb space.
If that is not correct and the next two vertical bars come together to form a straight line then you did not have uneven number stitches to start.
This is easy to fix though, so don't tear it out. Just simply go under the next 3 vertical bars for the first stitch instead of 2, then continue as before.
From now on you should just be able to continue around doing the Tunisian Smock Stitch in a spiral to the top of the hat.
Continue until measurement from top of brim to top of hat reaches (Child = 5.5", Teen 6", Adult 6.5")
3rd to Last Round: Decrease by doing TSS2TOG (without doing the Yarn Under as you did for Smock Stitch) for whole round
2nd to Last Round: TKS in each stitch of round
Last Round: TKS in each stitch of round
Cast Off: TKS cast off and leave a long tail to sew top together.
    Step 3:
Baste stitch around top and draw together to close tight. Sew on Pom Pom or Faux Fur Pom (optional).
Knot in the inside of hat to hold cinching tight and weave in all ends.
This is my first time writing a pattern and some of it was pretty complicated to explain.
If it is hard to understand, please make a comment (kindly) and I will try to explain it better and maybe revise my wording in the pattern.
All of this has been a fun journey for me as I continue to learn new skills in teaching and I appreciate your input.
    Enjoy!

I love the fact that you use measurements instead of stitch counts. For the same reasons that you stated we don’t all crochet the same and this way I know it will fit whoever I’m making it for.

Hi, yes eventually I will upload more videos. I recently moved to a new state where we have a small farm and that keeps me so busy. My husband and I are about to retire and start traveling so the logistics of creating crochet videos while traveling may be challenging but I plan to figure it out. Meanwhile, there are over 100 videos currently on my channel so I am hoping that will keep y'all occupied while I get used to my new normal 😊

I’ve been reviewing this tutorial to plan my project! I now have my Denice connecting hooks w cables. I guess I can go all the way around if there’s enough space between the hooks?

Yes if you connect two hooks with one of the longer cords or use the connector to put two cords together, it should work great.

I must be missing something. And to be fair this is my first tunision project. How are you joining the first rounds? I was at the first part where you add the honeycomb shape and realized none of my stitches were lined up. I'm 100% sure it's me.

    • @GinellCooper
      @GinellCooper  Рік тому +1

Okay give me a second to rewatch the video. I made quite a few videos back and can't remember the exact details but we'll figure it out together. I'm thinking there is no join, and making sure the honeycomb is offset has to do with the number of stitches being uneven but let me double check that and I'll get right back to you. 🧡

@@GinellCooper ok thank you so much. I cant remember that happening right after you do the first round of the fake tunisian or the first row

    • @GinellCooper
      @GinellCooper  Рік тому +1

@@heatherking9224 okay I'm watching it now but I can already tell that it is in the row of single crochets you do before you start the fake knit stitch with the Tunisian hook. All you need to do is make sure it's an odd number of stitches. Then when you get to the smock stitch, you'll be all set. When you get done with the first row of the smock stitch and you are starting the second row, you don't join them you just continue around in a spiral up. If your stitches are an odd number, the honeycombs should be offset. Even I mess it up in the video, so I show you how to fix it without having to undo it all. Let me know if that helps or not so we concur this project 😁

There’s an easier way to do this. Do it flat using a Tunisian hook with an extension cord then connect the two ends

    • @GinellCooper
      @GinellCooper  5 місяців тому +1

Yes, that would be easier but it would create a seam. Also I was wanting to teach how to Tunisian crochet in the round. Almost anything that can be done like a tube can also be done flat (my flat Tunisian crochet socks is an example) what you gain from doing it this way is no seam...and also just the knowledge of how to do it that way which is often what motivates me to do it in the first place. So it just depends on the goal of the project I guess ❤️

    • @doloresbaltierra447

    • @GinellCooper

Just for reference: Toni, the queen of Tunisian crochet uses the mattress stitch to whip it together and it hides the seam ua-cam.com/video/0JMbCrUkZqo/v-deo.htmlsi=8_JKkAEZet_4v6F0

    • @GinellCooper

Yes I use the mattress stitch a lot and I like it. The goal of this video was to show how to do Tunisian in a continuous circle though and how to use the double headed hook.
