- Using methods to drop Slime and other organic materials into magma we can build up columns of sand. How well does this work as a method to reach the bottom of the molten core in Oxygen Not Included?

"MEEP! Priority level noooo!"
That made me laugh so hard, love it!
"what do people even use slime for"
Dusk Caps: are we a joke to you?
No, You're a plant to me
Certainly not a fun guy. ;)
Yes. Yes Dusk Caps, you are a joke to me ;)
I don't remember the last time I farmed anything other than mealwood the domesticated way. Always Pip -> wild farms.
I use slime for water.
Hey it's the old Terraria Trick!
Yeah it is, but the sand's a little more finicky in ONI...
Man Terraria is making quite the comeback this year, hopefully Journey's End is as good as we had anticipated!
@@Delfite hmm I forgot about that, yeah
I knew this wouldn't be BORE-ING

I don't know
Brothgar: Sweepys and sand beats magma!
Klei: interesting. interesting. *writes that down*
You would probably need to build a sand pillar 8 wide. That way when you build your 2-tile ladder down the center, you have a 3-tile wall on either side, which I don't think can break from pressure build up.
Still, the most interesting drill through magma I had was when I used all the water and ice in an ice biome to offset the heat.
You can get a surprising number of seeds that require you to go through magma in order to get to oil on the Volcanea asteroid when you have the magma channel trait on.
If you had gone 5-wide, you would have had enough room for a ladder to a reachable pitcher pump.
I'm so glad that you're doing experiments again! Definitely some of my favorite content :)
An actual video experimenting with something I thought of.. Feeling very honored here! :) There's so many interesting mechanisms in this game, thanks for the mention and keep up doing all these great experiments!
Thanks for the idea!
You know what's a good way of reaching to the bottom of the map? Use a humble pitcher pump. With enough room of course. Create a HUGE storage of magma in a vacuum as well. After maybe idk.. 300 cycles You will have dried up enough magma to maybe reach the bottom. Not a bad idea to be honest lol.. Would be fun to try it out on an actual survival map.
Looking forward to the CAD stuff!! :3
Brothgar, while i watch how you build this structure, i think, maybe it be more usefull turn wall into metal for more thermal conductivity and use it like "rod" for heat up gasses, and build them upright across bottom
Can't you build that shaft outwards using that corner method?
Get a one tile column of sand down and then use that as the base to corner-build the 3-wide floor for the 1-tile-wide shaft+walls. Then build the walls outwards on either side and by starting with deconstructing a tile at the top next to the abysalyte and corner-building down.
You can definitively expand it. If you have enough natural obsidian you can probably get down to the bottom without to much hassle.
And if you need to punch through more obsidian, pile dirt on top before digging it out.
Cool I can use this method!
Interesting experiment, enjoyed watching. :) Just amazing how many crazy ideas you are coming up with haha. For 15:15, a curious thought to consider the pumps mod to pump the magma out? Haha, not sure if it is possible.
Though 2 very minor side notes haha:
- you can turn something on or off using the 'enter' button after selecting it
- you can change your cursor to deconstruct using the 'x' button
Just a suggestion, but don't let it restrict you from playing your way.
You can get pumps to work. It's quite a fancy trick tho using fancy pipes and multiple liquids.
I once accidentally boiled a tenth of my map because there was a lab near the magma and the heat rose through it and cooked the small ocean above it filling the air with intense temperature steam and some sour gas from spilled oil.
If you build the sand column one wide you can expand the floor of the column sideways using the "build through corner" method. No need for 4 columns. Also you get all the sand back ofc
Which begs the question, why do you need a column at all - just build sideways until you have another natural block underneath. Then go down one; rinse and repeat to bedrock.
Could you build up one column of sand and use that to build your way down (using 4 tiles to the left or right). Love your videos always excited to watch them when they come out, keep the good work up.
Yeah it seems like one single column would be all you need.
Corner builds are better imo. Build inn a pyramid shape until you hit bottom. Need a wide area, but once you're down you can release the magma after you build what you need in vacuum.
yo Brothgar, Francis john did a method to do that, he literally just built doors and used a special pump to actually pump 5kg/s of magma directly into 4 1kg/s lines to a steam room
It's interesting, even more, if you have the world trait that spawns like 4 volcanos on the core
You're overlooking the best option: use clothing. Clothing turns to carbon blocks when it "melts". In fact, heating up clothing is an OP way to get carbon. Dump cool vests down there.
Cool video!
I was wondering if you could do heat deletion via a combinated process of dropping a clump of whatever, it turns into a block of sand, then have a robominer mine it out (halving the material) , and then send the remaining clumps back for more deletion. This would probably only be feasible if you had a material that was basically only a waste product. If you could produce enough sand via other methods, sand destruction might be an effective heat deletion device somehow
What about using polluted water and using the steam turbines to make clean cool water?
Steamy idea :)
I guess most of us do this but the other way around.. huh.. why didn’t we just think of throwing water in there haha. Edit: but use salt water it’s better for there environment and dupe moral.
@Brothgar I have your next ONI challenge: The hamster wheel only challenge. No power source other than hamster wheels. You can use steam generators only as heat sinks. Meep can be the hamster wheel prison task master.
Brothgar needs to test the Meep mod. More crispy dupes!
I have seen 60000 in one tile due to a structure
Edit: thank you for the heart, I have never had my comments hearted before
Ethan Lev bruh It gets ride of the heart if you edit it
Well, this makes it a bit sad.
Interesting idea - super resource-intense... but what else do you use slime for :) (mushrooms BAH - I'm a fan of critter ranching... but even then you don't need that much slime!) So it would seem given enough sand or material to turn into sand, and a wide enough column you can make a ladder to the core of your world ... to do .. something ... :) I do like the idea at the end of a "slime boiler" ! :) Thanks for the Vid Brothgar ! Look forward to seeing your other project when it launches.
@ yes very true, and when I have slime biomes on my map I take advantage of it for a while - but in the end , the slime is just in the way and needs to go :)
If you make a jet suit dock the dupes could reach the pitcher pumps
I would love for you to make another ONI series like super modded or super dupes!!!!!
You can build a door on the other side of a door without even opening them.
I want a crispy 7meep kabob
Hey! You used Max in the thumbnail you traitor!
Yay!
If there were some way to keep regolith from instantly melting, I guess you could alternate between regolith and sand to force it to stack?
Another possibility would be to form "full" sand blocks above the magma and then drop them with a door. That way you could potentially use real sand which might be more reasonable than algae or slime if you're going to expend 1000kg+ per tile.
If you made your chute a little wider you might be able to dig straight down without all the fussing
THROW SHIT INTO MAGMA
MAKE SCIENCE
Edit: 8:25 THROW SLIME ON MAGMA
COMMIT SORCERY
I think I've heard about a similar trick used in Dwarf Fortress.
I did it a few years ago in a seasonally freezing biome to use a piston of ice to pump magma.
what if it alternated sand-dirt-sand-dirt? Tiles cant mix types
Will dirt melt in the sand, but ceramic was one idea that came up
Turns out that sand isn't lava proof
Had you considered making a sweepy bay along side of the shaft so as the magma rises it'll be managed instead of flowing back up?
A different idea, could you build a cooling loop on the surface of the magma and extend it down as the magma becomes igneous rock?
Why don't you try using a metal refinery to boil petroleum
This reminds me the Chernobyl series where they tried to cover the radioactive magma with sand.
can you chill the lava enough to create plugs and then dig into it - expanding the pipe network to chill it constantly?
Alternate regolith and dirt maybe?
What about just solidifying the magma into igneous and dig through that?
You give me an idea with the slime on the rail. How to feed puffs? pO2 you say. But not only slime give off pO2 but also pDirt. Now make a look of pDirt on rails in the room of the puffs and you fill it with pO2 to feed them. Boom slime for ages for whatever you need. Top this off with some pH2O under it and you get max output. maybe a bit to much :D
There is a easier way. U build autodoors horizontally to the bottom of magma. Dupes climb Doors as they were ladders. As u build them Doors u build walls diagonally so the magma doesnt comein
So Obsidian tiles and stuff can survive volcanic heat?
would this work better if you place a gap bewteen sand tower and sand tower of magma to heat it up faster??
What about one pillar of sand to replace the obsidian in the one spot
Cant you just build mechanized airlocks over eachother?
Just like the CRAFT i like to MINE in
hi brothgar how are you , i got an intresting idea about automating rockets to go to space its very good idea , it's possible to get done but you need to use deferents gates (buffer filter and or xor ...) i hope you read this comment
SWEEEEEEEPY!!
What if you just let regolith fall from space down into the lava? Shouldn't that be easier to stack up?
I dunno cAaAaAaN yOu?
What am I doing? Quarantine got me messed up
Couldn't you use water to chill that last bit of magma and then mine it out to that last little distance?
What if you use the system like in min. 16 and then work with pressured Air or another gas to drive the Magma out at the Bottom. So you can work your way down in a infinite way if you either use lots of Gas or make airloks every so far.
AFAIK, pressured gases can't push liquids around in this game. The reason the magma didn't just push all the way upwards the column here when he had a hole in the column isn't because of air pressure, but because of viscosity.
Couldn't you have made it with a 6-7 tiles wide sand-column?
so you would only need to do a single column of sand before building downward?
Yeah that seems like it would work
Just use the power of the edges, dupes are able to build things on the edges
Haha, such a weird project. Diagonal building is easier. Now build a base under the magma and call the Doom Lair ;)
Sure someone on the way already asked: But what mods are you using? I would especially like to know which one shows the sensor settings right in the overlay.
That mod is better automation overlay
Many thanks. Got it!
... Does Sand leak magma though?
Considering the tunnel you're going to dig is one tile wide.
Yeah you can see it just for a moment in the video as the magma is trying to break through.
@@brothgar
Yeah- you're going to need at least a double-layer of sand to dig a tunnel downwards... which means a 6-tile wide shaft.
Then there's the fact that Sand is continually being heated up and melting in a large pool of greater heat capacity.
So the choice is to build a Sweep Dock down in the shaft as soon as the shaft's complete... or to the point where you meet critical mass between melting and reforming.
On another note, Pips WOULD be able to make shafts, considering you have regenerative resources, and suddenly, you have infinite sand.
why use sand to get through magma, when you can use the raw heat of magma to get through sand?
Will corpse burn in magma
i may be late to the party but why not just using sand-regolith alternating... it wouldn't stack, plus massive amounts of regolith anyways. or am i not thinking of something?
Dwarf Fortress Double Slit??
What if you drop sand?
It does not drop into tiles :(
question,
is that possible to make a temperature lock ?
where dups drop that what ever they have when they go through a door or liquid?
my space is 200 c so when i bring it in my base, my base gonna melt.. thats why i ask :D
make a vacuum room
@@eduardomartins701 dont work for that what i wanna or have to build xD
@@xxGHOSTxx56 what do you want to do?
@@eduardomartins701 i want to dig the space rocks. 200c + when i do this atm the dups bring that to my storage space and then melt my base... so i need some sort or temperature lock or something, where the dops drop what ever they got when its to hot..
@@xxGHOSTxx56 the only thing i can think is making a second storage area with higher priority and make it a vacuum, or you can just deal with the heat by cycling the stuff in a pool of water first and using the conveyor rail
Cam break again?
what if you drop clay for free ceramic?
(°ロ°)☝ That may work
Coal could also work, as then you get refined carbon
This is a great video but it's coarse and gets everywhere
Why don't you use good old pitcher pump, no need sweepy or this kind things
He showed the pitcher pump - he hadn't made the column wide enough to get a dupe down to use it, so he threw a sweepy in because it would fit.
You also need to pull a vacuum :/
@@brothgar i tested it, you can use molten lead as liquid for airlock in magma biome. And it's pretty ok.
Could you use regulath so you'd have an unlimited amount
Nah you were just melt into more magma
@@brothgar true.... i forgot about your salt generators among others
Regolith?
what about using ice? drop the ice and it solidify to obsidian. and instead of sand or dirt what about regolith from space
Well he could just cool a channel and then dig it up. It would be a very hot job though
Hello :)
Hello 😊
Hola
15:37 why did you not drop sand into the shaft again to clear it out all the way to the bottom?
Yall didn't know how to vacuum build???
