- Fist they concord space. Then the tamed wild volcanoes. Now they have set there brushes to maximum to suck up the molten core! Can anything stop the Sweepy bots? In this episode of Oxygen Not Included I take a look at what it would be like to try and suck up the molten core and convert it into power using sweepy bots.

Brothgar: We're gonna use magma for power generation.
Also Brothgar: Powers small test base with 100000 watt coffee mug.
What if sweepy has enough what if it wants rights and start dumping magma into your base
⚆ _ ⚆ that would be a bad day.
just deconstruct the dock if that ever happens :D
You could name these sweepy series: Will it sweep?
Maybe a playlist :P
13:59 Brothgar would make a entertaining super villain
I LOVE your growling like on 13:59 in every series
If you have problems with items falling into the shaft you just cover sensitive places and bend your ladders. I used to make a huge ladder from bottom to top, but dupes tend to drop items in it at the end of the day.
I had the same problem when working with hot stuff near the core.
One of the dupes would go ther and faint, next one will go save him and fiant on the ladder, now I have 2 fainted dupes, then another one will try to save them and faint on the ladder, each time dropping more at the bottom.
I made some volcano power system based on Francis Johns design, but used conveyors for moving igneous around like yours. The main thing I used from his design was the mesh tile magma solidification system. The magma turns to igneous inside the two mesh tiles, drops diagonally to one side and into the turbine room. Then is instantly picked up by a sweeper arm and sent to multiple different turbine rooms.
Could you use a autosweeper to pull out the stuff in the sweepy dock. Put it in a dropper that drops it out of range and periodically you mark it for sweeping into the steam room for cooling down
You could try digging a shaft with insulated tiles to the bottom than drain that shaft leaving just room for the sweepy docks at the bottom and intakes on both sides. “Probably doors or something like that”.
wait till they release the pitcher pump and you dont even have to use steel for the sweepys
we can actually pitcher magma, so Sweepys is not needed at all right?
An idea to get down to the bottom of the magma without crispy dupes: use the falling sand/manually drop algae to dry up/push away magma in the area you're excavating :)
Nice idea!
While there are more efficient ways to use magma for thermal generation - this was a neat way to use a sweepy bot (which I consider useless otherwise). Thanks for the vid - missing your more frequent content updates, but I understand :)
You should make a big walk in fridge without using a ice biome
Honestly I wish you could get rid of neutronium so that you could eventually use the whole map
So, since before you generated power from regolith and now from magma, the only thing remaining is to power up a planetary anti-meteor system using magma generators :)
Magma defense system? MMMM sounds juicy.
You could also dump a bunch of regolith into the magma and create more thermal energy. Regolith has a heat capacity of 0.2, but turns into magma at 1:1 mass without dropping in temperature. And because magma has a heat capacity of 1, regolith magically multiplies its thermal energy by 5 when it melts into magma. So melting regolith will lower the overall temperature slightly, but still radically increase the total thermal energy.
I managed to get two sweepies for one dock when the auto-sweeper filled the dock with steel.
Yeah that might cause a problem. I think the patch is in testing.
There is a mod for sweepys and you can configure them to make them have a shipping output
Thanks a lot. Great video and explanation
Just so people know, this is now broken I think. The sweepy dock will break down holding magma.
From N.Gas Generators to Steam Turbines.
Upscale til' the wheels fall off.
I mean... you're mostly going to be digging down, not up, when constructing a Geothermal Generator... you have plenty of time for your dupes to clean up the bottom of the shaft before material contamination happens.
More like upscale till his pc gives up

I would like to recommend a mod called meep..... It makes everything dupe meep
BEST MOD EVER, unless you are the one true Meep.
I think it already exists
Shouldn't it be possible to get to the bottom without actually touching the lava? You could build blocks that 'push' the magma off to the side, and incrementally getting further down row by row until you are able to build a sweepy at the bottom.
For the most part yes. Everything i have tried has left at least a small puddle of magma on top of a tile. So it seemed a bit much to go into with one video when i still don't have it figured out.
Brothgar i love your vids

I'm hoping KSP2 comes out soon... I might come back and revisit this game -> to do some rocket science... for now tho... this one is on the back burner for me... I'm building Mun bases in KSP for now... Hope things are going well for everything though!
W8 w8 w8... KSP PLAYERS ARE HERE?
quick question, do Pokeshells attack Sweepy when they have eggs?
When a pitcher pump in a vacuum whilst not touching the magma on the 2 walking squares is too much. Multiple pitchers in delivery range increased total transfer over 200kg per walk.
28:47 Or just put a solid door sideways at the bottom of the shaft, so all debris stops on top of it, possibly with an auto-sweeper in range of the door so it takes care of the debris.
couldn't you use the heat extraction using doors method to both extract heat and control the bottle emptyers
Yes, and done it :D
Can we see an experiment using magma to dig? Does it acquire 100% of the tile rather than 50% by dupe digging? How is it safely done? What is the most efficient method?
Cant you make doorlocks with the tubesystem?
Is there a possibility in order to melt the cooled material by dropping them into the magma again?how much power loss would it be?cant figure out proper numbers..(if its low enough you should be able to extend the power generation by couple of times over
Great work. Do you also have a means to tackle vents? I know they may be a little more tricky to sort given the differing kinds.. but maybe something with the canister fillers? It be nice to have a single design that works with all of them. I have a few on my map and I strugle to sort out a good means to handle and use them.
This is a cool concept I wonder how this could be used for some advanced build
Captain Flameheart you could make it automated but that would require mods to handle liquids like solids
You can go all the way to the bottom if you push the magma away since it won't flow upwards. It would be a bit less maintenance to let all that magma flow to you instead of having to keep moving the docks down.
Not sure what you call it, but I use a "drop lock" which is a step in long vertical shafts to prevent drops from causing issues.
The power output seems to be fairly inconsistent. Would it make more since to increase the water in the room to greatly increase its thermal mass? I feel like that would allow the room to handle the massive injections of heat coming from the magma.
Yeah maybe. Things can get weird when you have a ton of steam and you might end up deleting heat. There is a whole thing with using oil related to that problem. Keeping the steam mass lowish seems to keep the game happy.
You're right 100kg of steam takes longer to heat up than 20kg of steam. In the same amount of time one can reach 200c while the other would reach 400c.. this is interesting I never thought of that.. basically now the experiment would be what amount of steam is needed in order to use the least of amount of resources (enough for the turbine to catch up because if you set that bad boy on fire the whole system will overheat).. damn you ONI.
Michael Sotomayor @brothgar has an entire testing series on steam turbine optimization blocking inputs with doors depending on the temp, bu that was many game version ago.
Why not just build conveyor rails into the magma and then to the steam room with autominers and sweepers for when you freeze the magma?
Try adding the ship liquid mod and a autosweeper to move the magma
Brilliant
Is it possible to run out of magma from the core ?? and how do you refill it ?? aside from the volcano
can you drip water down to the core and use the thermal transfer to power steam and would it be worth it compared to sweepy docks ??
Well, dupes are a renewable resource, so spending them to retrieve magma seems like a sustainable process.
What mods do you use? like the instant skill, delete filter, blueprint.
Debug tools and sandbox are part of the game. Blueprints is a mod
Here's an idea: lighter gasses tend to be more thermally conductive. What you can do is create a gas-lock that's "upside down" of what you have and use chlorine in the bottom. In this case you could fill the entire "shaft" that your dupes climb up and down with chlorine as well and you would have very good insulation
Could you have created an artificial temporary safezone to dig to the bottom by dropping algae or whatever there in a 3+ wide pattern though?
Just create a pillar and dig out the middle.
What if you build a shaft from the top of your base to the bottom. That way you have a quick access to the regolith, and you will be able to supplement your power production
After you use the igneus rock to heat up the steam too, couldnt be better to drop it back into the magma so it turns back into magma and suck even more power out of it?
If you make the magma too cold it will solidify. That could cause some problems down the road.
brothgar could you also use a hand pump as well?
After the recent patch: bro watch how hard I can cry
4:35 dublicants cannot dig neutronium, it would be good if the build was possible without mods and dev mode
i would want you to someday be that excited about LIMITED power!! ^^
Did you just said you going to try melting instead of digging everything to preserve mass?
even if i was wearing an exosuit, i would prefer not to slide down that 1400 C fire pole
You should look in to Fallout 76 and camp/workshops building.
You ever just
S W E E P Magma?
You did not give them cool vests?
Where'd you get the dev generator?
what is the reason you are not using sweepers to move the magma? is it heat loss? you can run the rails through insulated tiles(3 wide if needed) then it wouldn't lose too much, right? or are the sweepers/ loaders melting in that temperatures?
Sweepers can't move bottles without mods.
IIRC sweepers don't move bottles in vanilla, and aside from quality of life mods like the automation overlay i don't think he wants to use mods in the blueprints so he doesn't force them on people
ಠ⌣ಠ I mean if I'm going to go full mods. Drains 4 life!
ah fair enough. havent played in a while so i didnt remember
I’ve not thought of alt q-ing a dupe around to reveal, any advantage over the “reveal tool”?
A nice fade to the to the shade rather then a hard edge. (•_•) ( •_•)>⌐■-■ (⌐■_■)
it stays revealed unlike the other method
Use a "jack hammer" baby!
What! no Half life alyx ?
How do you get the mug?
Can't you just use water pump instead of sweepy?
You can use a pump or even a pitcher pump if you set them up just right.
Eyyy another ONI.
I love this idea, actually gonna steal that :)
Man, those storage bins need a temperature limiter, a slider one can set that says don't accept any material above say 35 degree Celsius or any other temperature one chooses.
Good idea. Maybe that can be a mod
can you re melt the igneous to make a forever power loop?
I think it would take more energy to melt than it would give back. Probably good idea to find a volcano to feed off of.
igneous nor heat works that way, but you can BOOST power using other materials.
So the sweepy can sweep liquids now?
yes
Brothgar, can you recycle some trash stone back into magma for more renewable energy?
You’d just be adding more mass to the system you’d have to maintain above 125°C, thermodynamics (which oni only attempts to emulate) and entropy are real physics problems this game has us solve. As the mass of the igneous rock at around 124° or less gets higher the magma you are adding also has the regulate the temp of the mass of the previous igneous rock, once the rock reaches 96°C it’s is no longer productive(I think 124° would be more efficient) and should be removed from the steam room to do something else.
