4wd Auto uses an electromagnetic clutch in the transfer case to engage the front wheels. The truck will send power to the rear wheels as long as no slippage is identified. Once the vehicle senses slippage it will engage the transfer case clutch, which will then split power to the front and rear wheels.
The luxury options available don’t live up to the added costs. As an owner of a special ordered base 2018 Raptor with a few options and total paid of $50k new that has used it on some serious off-roading it definitely has surpassed its price tag. Personally I'm sick and tired of hearing about the plastic interior, # 1 I'm in construction #2 I fish a lot and in both cases I'm always SLIMEING my truck, and the inside of my truck wipes down In seconds and has held up great. I like utility in my truck. Also Maybe this fancy interior in the Ram is why it's 85k to 90k not 77k. Why don't you guys push for Lamborghini everything so only 3 people on the planet can afford one.
Same opinion here I prefer the hard plastic as it cleans easy. It’s odd to me that people assume soft touch is higher quality. It’s all the same crap. The soft touch is just overpriced. With what comes standard now a days the base model trucks are plenty nice for me. Rubber floor and vinyl seats preferred.

You can turn off the augmented sound.... I did. I have an XLT with the 3.5 eco boost. I was given a Raptor exhaust which I installed on the XLT. It looks great, a true dual exhaust, a slight bump in performance and the transmission doesn’t lag anymore. I replaced the Downpipes also.
Yes, I can be done through ForScan. Actually, mine was never turned on. I didn’t allow the dealer to prep my truck. I had them take it out of transport mode.... and that was it. I didn’t want them to clean it with an dirty old shop rag.
The 4Auto in the Ford and GMC act as an AWD system. So it stays in 2wd until it slips and engages the front wheels that are needed. My 2019 GMC Sierra AT4 has it and that’s what it tells you is AWD not 4Auto. And the sound isn’t technically faked, it takes the engine noise and amplifies it so you can hear it that’s why it doesn’t change it’s the same noise.
Truck interiors should be durable and functional first, and this one is. I don't caress my dashboard, but I do use the HVAC with gloves on. Keep car interiors in cars.

When you bought yours they were building hundreds a day. When we bought our Ford was building 0 Raptor per day. What do you think that does for supply and demand and sticker prices? 😉
Good negotiating, same here I traveled to a town over and bought mine for $65k sticker was $73k. Locally for that price they were selling me used ones with 20k to 30k miles, no thanks.
If there was any way that the exhaust could be made to sound like a Detroit Diesel 6V71, that would be amaaazzing. Hey, don't feel ostentatious Roman because everyone who sees a Raptor secretly wishes they were driving it.

Good video - agree that the exhaust sound is terrible, especially inside the cabin. And the cheaply designed interior doesn’t help either. I get that a lot of guys who have been buying these things don’t care about interior quality or aesthetics, but for the money being spent, Ford needs to put some effort into competing with FCA interior-wise, imho.
When in 4A, goto the Power Distribution display in the cluster. You will see that it is 4WD/AWD at all times. It's not like most that run 2wd and then kick in 4wd when needed.
The 4 auto is essentially AWD where it is primarily rear wheel drive until slip is detected and then a multi- plate clutch between the drivetrain and rear driveshaft kicks in and sends power to the front wheels . At highways speeds on dry pavement the clutch obviously wouldnt slip and youd remain 2wd rear
My wife and I ordered our 2021 JLU Sport S with the Selec-Trac 4WD system with the Anti-Spin Differential (I'm old school I call it limit slip) But it's the same concept with the 4WD as the Raptor AWD setting.

The mileage is not so good and that it is really not a truck for loading with lumber or towing anything over 4000#s , so this is why I am keeping my ‘98 F250 Supercab 4x4. It loads up a ton + and tows 9000#s. It is a real truck with that great 5.4 Triton V8.

I have the Race Red one, and it was sitting at a dealer for quite some time. It took me a bit of time to warm up to it, but cannot picture driving any other color. I never see other Race Red Raptors, and the grey, gunmetal, black and white ones are just boring.

Sounds about right, personally I love that colour and would try to order one without the graphics or have them removed. Many of the complaints about the width of the truck will be shared with the TRX, I am interested is seeing the fuel economy differences between them.
Here's the thing with the engine: if they can get that out of a 3.5, what could they have done with 6 or 7 naturally aspirated liters? I hate this "turbocharge all the things!" attitude we see now amongst most auto manufacturers and I love that Dodge isn't going along with it.
@@2011blueman Yeah I know what it is, I just wish the manufacturers would do what Dodge has done and say, "Nah, not worth the savings" and simply refuse to do it. I mean, they're not really *required* to do it, they just pay more tax if they don't (which gets passed on to the customer, which I would prefer over having a small-displacement, turbo-charged engine).
all you have to do is look at the power distribution page in the dash display in 4A. It should show you that all 4 wheels are still receiving power in 4A, but it's rear biased normally.
The only thing i think your off base on is that Trucks arent made to be Showing off money. But if you look at the average price of a pickup is much higher than a car and Suv. Thank for the video gentlemen. I've had a different experience with the BFG KO2's. They do well in light and dry packed (crunchy) snow, but hard packet wet snow and ice....hold on, your going for a spin. I run dedicated studded snow tires on my F150 in the winter and nothing beats them...period. In my opinion and experience, if one doesn't want to buy actual snow tires, the Goodyear Duratracs are impressive in snow and ice, much better than BFG's, especially if you stud them.

I like the cap over a Tonneau cover... plus you can pretty much get rid of it just like a the tonneau cover but you have more space. Love the color by the way!!! Keep up the great work 👍
About the Raptor size. While it is over 80”, which is why it has the DOT mandatory lights, the parking in Boulder is related to city policy. Cities control the regulations for parking space width. Some cities, like Bolder, mandate narrow parking spaces. There are a many reasons given for this, more parking in the same space, less hard cover, etc but the often unstated reason is social engineering. The reasoning is that smaller spaces will influence people to buy smaller vehicles. Austin, TX had a similar policy a few decades ago, I’m not sure it’s still effect.
The Raptor in my country is very popular, and agree with Roman... It is all the guys that want you to know he has one. Capability & usability, and dare I say reliability is not important at all, as long as other people hear and see him 😉
I like the Raptor, always did. I don't know why most people didn't liked the color, I think its awsome. The sticker can be removed, to make it more subtle. It does need a big V8 and super/turbo-charged if they want to stay competitive with the TRX. It would drive me crazy if I would have to listen to the artificial sound below my music and can't be turned off. Can't stand the popup tent you guys put on the bed. There are nice tonneau covers even hard ones (steal protection) that roll out of the way for bikes, etc.
My brother in law has one and it is sweet. But one thing about it bugged me. On the inside of the doors on the front seats, where the window meets the sill, it has a really sharp angle. Almost like they forgot to put some trim in and you can see the hard plastic just forming this odd sharp squared off edge. I’ve never seen a car with a window sill that looked like that. Normally they’re rounded or covered. It seemed absurdly cheap looking for such an expensive car. Does yours have a square bare hard plastic in that corner of the trim? Just on the inside driver and passenger side window just opposite of the rear view mirrors?
I have owned a 2014 (fully optioned out) from New to 143k miles and traded it in on the 2020 fully optioned out. I have now put 10,000 miles on my 2020. The new truck is better in every single conceivable way OTHER than the sound. I struggled with the idea that I wasn’t going to like the sound but then I drove it. Again it’s better in every conceivable way other than when I stable the throttle under the bridge. While your enjoying the sound of your booming V8 I will be blasting through all ten gears at 100+ before your out from under the bridge. Would it be cool to have that V8? Yep but that’s not the thing that make it an awesome truck! You have to drive them back to back before your opinion really matters, other wise you don’t know what your talking about and judging it ONLY on the sound from the exhaust pipe. If the sound is most important then buy a Chevy or Ram pick up. There are my two cents worth. The TRX is a pretty sweet machine but at the price of the Raptor it’s a low option truck. We all know the reliability of the Ram is going to hurt it in the long run. My 2014 Raptor with 143k miles traded in for 50% of the purchase price 🥳. The Ram TRX won’t be close to that in six years.
I have a 1st Gen Raptor and that wide track comes with a benefit - stability. I find it to be much more stable in turns and with pulling my 28ft travel trailer than other trucks I've driven. Another benefit is the lower rate of depreciation compared with a "regular" F150.
I hope the 3rd gen is the new 6.8 Windsor supercharged because then it could directly compete with the TRX because I feel like this will be the end as we move into electrification.

Once the vehicle senses slippage it will engage the transfer case clutch, which will then split power to the front and rear wheels.
The soft top loos like crap
I actually like it... Looks militaryish.
The paint color doesnt' help, but even on a cement grey or white one... meh
I don't think they've ever heard of tonneau covers lol
agreed. I would never put that on my Raptor.
I don’t feel like it lives up to the price tag.
Agreed, all trucks really, but at least it’s more than an ancient automatic locker and a block lift for the same price like one of their competitors.
No pherd ever has
It's probably the cheapest truck you could ever drive in regards to depreciation. These trucks hold their value better than any truck on the road.
It's over priced for sure!! But hell if people are willing to pay, so be it.
The luxury options available don’t live up to the added costs. As an owner of a special ordered base 2018 Raptor with a few options and total paid of $50k new that has used it on some serious off-roading it definitely has surpassed its price tag. Not perfect but overall much more capable for the intended purpose.
@@HookedOnTuna I would love if they offered rubber floors I had it in my 88 Toyota pickup and it was great just wipe it clean
I like that the running boards aren't really hurting the "high center" ground clearance much where others are commonly getting bent up in the boonies. This one looks sturdy enough to actually act as a skid plate.
Wait until the sunroof starts creaking over every bump. Our 2017 spent 3 weeks at the dealer and they couldn't figure out how to stop the noise. After our previous Ford I told my wife never again. She persisted but now understands why this is our last one.
My old chevy did that, after cleaning all the dirt out of the tracks and off the seals and spraying them with silicone spray and the squeaks went away. Shame I couldn't keep everything else from squeaking and creaking
We dumped Nissan, had many of them from 2004 to 2020. Got rid of them all for Toyota’s, wife has a 4Runner, and I have a 4Runner. They have big sunroofs btw compared to the Tacoma.
Why would you augment a crappy Corvair exhaust note?
First time I've heard the in-cabin exhaust note. It's terrible...lol.
And its FAKE. That is embarassing. They should have just had fun with it like Tesla instead.
So much hate in the comments on the raptor. Personally, I’m part of the generation that is moving away from the v8. I don’t care for it. This v6 is more power than you need and makes it worth the purchase. I know you v8 oldies like the ideal v8s hold and more power to you. I just like the fun I can have in one and the capabilities that it has. It drove the TRX to become the beast it wanted to be so hand the raptor some love damn
So did I, it was simple. Theses numb nuts have no clue...🤦♂️
ForScan?
I think you're spot on with Ford's interior. Plastics and switchgear have always been kinda, meh cheap.
Truck interiors should be durable and functional first, and this one is. I don't caress my dashboard, but I do use the HVAC with gloves on. Keep car interiors in cars.
@@plmn93 no it isn't they got this truck with broken switches 😂 makes ur point invalid couldn't even last a 1000 mile roadtrip what's the point of cheap plastics 🤷 Ford cheaps out in their interiors and Ford ppl willingly pay for it and Ford makes a tonne of money off it the interior is not far off from a 2008 Ford f150
Yeah this is why you have to discount The integrity of anyone who drives a Ford because they’re willing to put up with this and a vehicle it’s 10 years old and yet they carry on imperfections and failures to every model, then you will have a Ford fans tell you how well-built they are 😂 you will never ever and you couldn’t ever find those kind of imperfections in any Dodge model of any year ever ... and if they were a problem they were not carried to the next model,. because everyone would talk about it, now Ford fans they love to hide the imperfections and say“Every maker has no problems“ no just you fraud just you fraud....
@ you should get an award for the best reason to pay $70,000 and love cheap plastic award if you don’t have a job already I would apply at Ford they love your kind...😂
@@plmn93 Not on a 77k truck. Do you really think that anybody who buys this truck will get it dirty?
I have an 18 and I love the floaty drive. So comfy!
My Raptor was marked up to $81k (still on the sticker) but I eventually walked out of the dealership for under $64k including tax and title. So make sure you negotiate. The Raptor has been the best truck I have ever owned or at least the one that I have loved the most.
@@TFLnow I agree. I watched your other vids and realized your situation.
If there was any way that the exhaust could be made to sound like a Detroit Diesel 6V71, that would be amaaazzing. Hey, don't feel ostentatious Roman because everyone who sees a Raptor secretly wishes they were driving it.
The soft cover is a disgrace. You can try to justify its purpose all that you want, but it belongs on a Chevy Luv not a Raptor!!!!
I mean his money his truck lol
@@hxwolt Exactly. That's just about the most un-American thing possible. Telling another man what he should or shouldn't do to his pickup truck.
Tommy and Roman, it is a sheer Performance Truck, you can't us it as a grocery getter, and expect to get awesome fuel milage.
As a gen 2 Raptor owner, you hit all the points. Great review!
Awwweeee. Poor little Roman... He doesn't like the sound.... awe. It's a RAPTOR!!!! The biggest problem with it is that it's not mine.
That soft-top doesn't look good on a Ford Raptor..
fr
It makes sense for the use but it does look terrible. The rest of the vehicle is beautiful though.
I have this truck and now they have the Raptor -R which I can’t find for under $140,000. It’s a 5.2 supercharged V8. That’s a crazy price! I’ll get one in 3 years when the prices chill out.
My Buick keeps telling me to keep my eyes on the road and I keep telling it to go to hell!!!! It ain't my granddad's Buick though!
I agree with you both 100%
Can’t wait for the TRX testing and overview!
Corsa exhaust and SPD downpipes. Much improved sound, quicker spool and more powah.
Everything is ok with it guys except that price $77,000. No way in hell I’d pay that kind of price
Bc you're broke...
When I grow up I might have to get me a Raptor. Then again, as a guy in his 50s, that probably won't happen, lol.
I like the soft bed top cover. I’m seeing them a lot lately here in Texas. My neighbor just put one on his Tacoma.
When in 4A, goto the Power Distribution display in the cluster. You will see that it is 4WD/AWD at all times. It's not like most that run 2wd and then kick in 4wd when needed.
I don't know what you mean by most, but GMs system operates the same way. You are correct in how it operates though.
I have a raptor and get 10-12 mpg and 15 if I’m trying to get really good gas mileage
Lost me with the “doesn’t ride like a Cadillac”. If it rode like a Cadillac I’d be pretty pissed lol
I hope the new 2022 raptor will have the same 5.2l supercharged V8 as in the GT500, then it will be a true competitor to the TRX
Hey Roman and Tommy! Love the videos! You can turn off the UConnect weather alerts with a Super Chips, ProCal, or Tazer. They just take a moment to switch off, game changer. Thanks!
That's not UConnect, it's Sync.
@@alexandermckay8594 Hey, yep. I was speaking to the UConnect weather alerts they mentioned in their Gladiator. ;)
Great review. Looking forward to the TRX review soon. Happy New Year!
It’s 2020 and we’re still talking about the 3.5 sound, people have been complaining about sound on these since 2017
Probably cuz nothing has changed...
Severe snow rated all terrain all weather tires are still not as good as dedicated winter tires. I think they are good enough and not worth the effort to change tires unless in climate like Alaska. The interior needs to be updated badly. I assume it will be updated like the new F150.
@Brian. “The interior needs TO BE updated badly”. Since when did sounding ignorant by using completely wrong grammar become cool? Note to you: It hasn’t.
@@mikek5298 Chill out, you sound like a 3rd grade english teacher on a power trip. “Needs to be” is a common and perfectly acceptable phrase, no need to get nasty over it.
@@tyleranderson5823 Just Ignore the Troll and don't feel bad. He does this to every reply that doesn't praise the Raptor. Just another delusional fanboy.
I like the design of the interior, but I do wish it was less “plasticky”. But at the same time I love it that way, because I can abuse it sometimes when I actually need to do some work with it.
I have an ‘18 and have very similar likes and dislikes. The ride does get more Caddy like when you have four adults or lots of cargo.
For one, you don’t buy a Ford F150 Raptor for the fuel economy. He says he doesn’t like the fuel economy at a little over 15 mpg, wait until you start driving the ram TRX and you’re looking at 7 to 8 MPG, that 15 MPG is going to look a lot better.
He’s such a suck up to Chevy he’s gonna say something like the gas mileage on TRX is ok for what you get
@@101criminal Yeah most likely. I absolutely love my 2020 Raptor. Not one complaint about it
I have the Race Red one, and it was sitting at a dealer for quite some time. It took me a bit of time to warm up to it, but cannot picture driving any other color. I never see other Race Red Raptors, and the grey, gunmetal, black and white ones are just boring.
We all get it for what it is. An ultimate off-road machine that looks the better than any other truck and also holds its value. What more can you ask for?
Exhaust actually sounds good to me. That bed cover looks trash though.
Ya I don't have a problem with the V6 sound. Kind of reminds me of a rally car.
He complains about the sound and not that piece of shit cover? Somethings not right.
I know, I like my rice rocket truck lol
Sounds about right, personally I love that colour and would try to order one without the graphics or have them removed.
Many of the complaints about the width of the truck will be shared with the TRX, I am interested is seeing the fuel economy differences between them.
That top needs redesigned to fit the body lines and sizes of the truck, than it might look good.
Here's the thing with the engine: if they can get that out of a 3.5, what could they have done with 6 or 7 naturally aspirated liters? I hate this "turbocharge all the things!" attitude we see now amongst most auto manufacturers and I love that Dodge isn't going along with it.
What you actually hate is fuel economy requirements. Manufacturers are required to turbocharge smaller engines to get better fleet gas mileage.
If you can afford a new pickup you prolly can afford the a really nice luxury car. If i see someone in a New Pickup thats not a base WT model i know they paid over 30k for it and prolly more like 40 to 50 for it. TRucks have gotten so overpriced its insane.
Get rid of that soft top and get yourself a nice Tri-fold G2 tonneau cover.
I really hope y’all add the dash tap test to your evaluations on all trucks!
@Jarrett “Y’all”? Seriously? What part of Texas are you from?
What the hell is a dash tap test for and why would anyone care? I tapped my dash and it sounded like I thought it would. A dash
@@thejuiceisloose8703 apparently in this video a cheap interior means the dash is cheap plastic, you can tell by tapping on the dash. Don’t recall them doing this in other trucks. Hence, dash tap test for cheapness of vehicle.
Go right into the GPS app and its in the settings in there
Roman I have the exact same Raptor as you, same color and everything! I love it!!
It's the nice looking Raptor, but I prefer a 6.2l V8.
V6 was almost a deal breaker for me, coming from gmc with 5.3 v8. Was going to upgrade to the 6.2 Denali truck, test drove the Raptor and i was hooked. I just love this truck. I get my big 6.2 v8 fix with my older yukon Denali. You are right wish it was a v8
@@marcoperez4712 Don't know if you know or not, but he was talking about the hellcat 6.2. Not the GM 6.2.
I wonder if the 2022 Raptor will have the grill and headlight style of a 2018 F150 since the 2020 has the style of 2017. That is the number 1 thing I'd hate about the Raptor.
It'd definitely look better than the '21 front end lol
I think you are spot on. For that much money the interior should be much better and not have any issues like you do with the vent.
Augmented exhaust noise should be standard on ALL trucks. That way when they come blaring by my home at 5am or on a quiet afternoon at least they are getting a good dose of what they are giving.
i have 18 grand Cherokee. i have the same issue with radio. but i bought a z Automotive tazer. witch is a obd2 device. it can override that pop up and stop it. and it does work great. also comes with alot of other features as well.
I like the cap over a Tonneau cover... plus you can pretty much get rid of it just like a the tonneau cover but you have more space.
Love the color by the way!!! Keep up the great work 👍
Do y'all have any interest in testing the upcoming bremach BRIO or TAOS?????????? Warranty looks good
About the Raptor size.
Tommy, you're a good driver. Nice to see.
The Raptor in my country is very popular, and agree with Roman... It is all the guys that want you to know he has one.
Capability & usability, and dare I say reliability is not important at all, as long as other people hear and see him 😉
I hate fake engine noise in the cabin, my Lexus LS500 is the same, twin turbo V6. A definite downside of stupid engineers or marketing folks.
One thing I hate the most is no parking sensors on the front bumper.
Curious why not wait for the electric f150 end of this year?
Look at the power distribution section of your dashboard to understand how 4 auto works
I hope the 3rd gen is the new 6.8 Windsor supercharged because then it could directly compete with the TRX because I feel like this will be the end as we move into electrification.
This current era is the Swan Song of this type of consumer ICE vehicle without a doubt.
I'd like to see a high h/p version of the 7.3 in this rig.
For real! That would be super cool
You might in 2022...They are going to put some form of V8 in it.
