    ABOUT THIS GAME
BETA WEEKEND #1 IS NOW LIVE FOR ALL PRE-ORDERS.
ICARUS is a session-based PvE survival game for up to eight co-op players.
Endure a savage alien wilderness on Icarus, humanity’s greatest mistake. Survive its brutal environment as you explore, harvest, craft and hunt while seeking your fortune.
From their orbital station, prospectors drop to the planet surface for limited time sessions, where they learn to endure the alien environment, complete faction missions and search for valuable exotic materials. Those that survive return to orbit as seasoned veterans, converting their exotics into advanced technology, and taking on ever more challenging drops with newfound knowledge. Those that get left behind... are lost forever.
Icarus was once destined to be a second Earth, but when terraforming collapsed - the air turned toxic and humanity’s hopes of colonizing a new world died. Icarus became a joke, a symbol of humanity reaching for the stars and failing. Yet when xeno-biologists discovered the cause of the failure - exotic matter - new interest was ignited. Valuable beyond reckoning, these ‘exotics’ sparked a gold rush, fueling political tensions on Earth, and bringing prospectors flocking to Icarus.
Confront and conquer a brutal PvE world determined to wear you down or tear you apart.
From toxic atmosphere to savage wildlife and game-altering weather events, Icarus is a planet with a temper. Preparation and planning are everything, whether it’s to find a source of oxygen, stalk your next meal or stock supplies for a long journey into the wilderness.
Immerse yourself in a deceptively familiar, yet alien, world.
The First Cohort of prospectors has been granted initial mining licenses for over 64 square kilometers of hand-crafted terrain full of hidden corners and resources to mine and diverse biomes to explore. Use the resources around you to survive - every single tree is harvestable, every rock can be voxel mined.
Master three separate tech trees: planetary tech, player talents and orbital workshop.
Use the planet’s resources to craft tools, structures and machinery to protect yourself and aid your mission. Develop unique skills and improve core talents as you gain experience on the planet's surface. Then return to orbit with rare exotic materials that you can engineer into advanced tech. Choose which skills to develop and which tech to take on your next drop so you can complete missions faster, travel further, automate production or improve your odds of survival. Every decision matters.
Your time on Icarus is limited, so always watch the clock and use every second wisely.
The orbital space station waits for no one. If you fail to return to your dropship in time, there is no rescue. Your character’s progress and tech is lost to planet Icarus. Choose between sessions that can last from hours to days to weeks. Or play on the side of caution and build a permanent outpost. Every drop has a clear goal, but how you overcome its challenges... is up to you.
    Your character is everything.
Learn the intricacies of the atmosphere, challenge yourself to face new threats and push yourself beyond the comfort zone. The cautious survive, the bold will thrive. New talents, new tech and new exotics are available to those who dare risk it all. Will you face Icarus head on?
ICARUS is being made by a team of survival game veterans at RocketWerkz in beautiful Auckland, New Zealand.

Some points on the rifle vs Bow argument:
    - the bow is silent, while the rifle does draw attention.
    - the arrows should be recoverable most of the time, while the bullet is always consumed
    - from what I saw, the rifle will break down in exactly 100 shots, while a tier 3 or 4 bow with the nice extra 15% durability perk will last for longer
    - the crit damage of a bow will deal with a lot of the lesser animals (wolves, jaguars, etc.) so going for the rifle would be somewhat overkill.
However, having the trusty boom stick for old Teddy is a very good idea. And at that tech level I'd say carry both. Have a bow with 100 arrows for the low & mid health targets and the repeating rifle with 100 bullets for those dicey situations. Or go for bow + shotgun - whatever feels good.
One thing about the rifle that does disappoint is that there is a max range (after which the projectile either falls off fast or just poofs out of existence) and I don't think it's much more than the one for the bow. I was kind of hoping that with a rifle I'd be able to say hello to critters from way farther away.

      @ShabbyDoo  Рік тому +1

Unless it's changed, if you can hit the long distance headshot with the kill cam you can still hit the target! I do agree on arrows, it's a fantastic early game. However by the time you can make a rifle, the materials for bullets are plentiful so the "waste" for me isn't on the bullet, but for the extra inventory for arrows / bows I don't really need. Love the points though all very good.

I go bows mainly because I've invested talent points into it. Guns are great, but if you're doing missions, a lot of times you won't get there. Also there aren't any Workshop guns yet, so that's a downside. With the 5% break chance on composite arrows and the talent to highlight arrows that I might've missed, it's a very long time before you ever have to restock. Tier 3 and 4 are strictly for open world (which wasn't available when you made this) or when the mission demands it, otherwise I use my caveworm bow and worm/flint arrows and they do just fine.
I am making a gun main in my open world (so i can use an already crafted hunting rifle) and will start doing some missions with it once I hit lvl25 and can craft my own rifle/ammo.

T2 bow is all i need for most stuff....if I am going into the T3 realm I will make a T3 as the mats are not bad...above that I dont feel its needed, especially with Bow talents. I also just stick with bone or flint arrows. The higher mats are typically too valuable unless you are staying for a long time. I just enjoy the bow talent tree and how it is usable from drop all the way thru, so even for low quick missions. With the gun you have to get into the tree and stay at least for a bit....

I love the hunting rifle over the bolt action but I so rarely craft the fabricator that I rarely get a chance to use it. Most missions I use the t3 bow with flint arrows with at least a bolt action and ideally a bolt action/shotgun combo. Shotgun shells are so expensive to make though, I tend to keep it strictly in case of emergency. If I'm using the hunting rifle then I don't bother with the shotgun.

I'm a pretty dedicated bow user. I almost always get up to recurve, and go with flint or bone arrows, while my friends go with rifles. I'd be much more inclined to invest in high-end arrows if they'd fix the bugs surrounding looting them off of corpses, I'd also love a talent or module to let me track arrows like they have for knives, spears, and even axes. I've also started bringing the top-tier workshop arrows. I can use them at the beginning to skip stone arrows all together, and then save them for bosses or polar bears later on. Having utility both early and late-drop makes them better than a lot of other choices despite being disposable.

The bows are really cool and with the higher arrows can be viable and resourceful as you can get most arrows back after the kill (providing they don't move as you're firing lol)
BUT the hunting rifle is the only thing I go for, the relatively cheap cost of the rifle and ammo is too perfect and 6 shots loaded with 100+ ammo in inventory you're sorted to travel around all of ICARUS unafraid.

I tend to stick with recurve/bone arrows most of the time for ease of ammo replacement. If the situation warrants firearms or if I need a Fabricator, I'll skip the bolt-action completely & go straight to the hunting rifle. I don't bother with the shotgun, IMO it's worse than the pistol.

I am spec'ed into bow talents a decent enough amount to make them usable, but I don't see much point in pushing too far. Rifles take over when it comes to that point. I get the most mileage in missions from a longbow w/ bone arrows which I switch into a recurve w/bone arrows if I am going to the machining bench. If I go to fabricator, the hunting rifle takes the primary role and I don't even bother with the bolty anymore. When it comes to ammo crafting it is hard not to take advantage of the crap ton of iron that is always left over vs. making choices on how best to use more limited resources to craft high end arrows that just don't have enough killing power. I love shooting the bow (and I love endless bone arrow supply as well), but the lever action makes huge potential problems into minor nuisances.
I have only recently started pushing into the River Lands and find myself going to knife melee after bow strikes more often than I like. I think it may be time for me to take a more serious look at flint arrows for the same reason as above (the iron is just laying around anyway). Hopefully that will be enough to stretch the longbow/recurve until I can get a rifle (probably should also go back to crafting a bolty at the machining bench to hold me over as well).
