I've used that filter since I was a kid and love them! I'm now in my 60s, and still use them.. they've changed little over the years in design....👍👍

That looks like the "my first fish tank" filter that came with most children's bedroom aquarium kits back in the 70s. LOL

My first filter was a box, same size as yours. We used marbles for weight and spun glass floss for media. The lift tube is a great way to increase flow through air lift filters.

I was looking around for this and got annoyed. People only talking about the product but not actually showing the whole thing. I'm like I don't wanna stare at your face the whole video, I wanna see the filter. That's why I'm so glad I found this.

I like the lift tube hack. The included air diffusers are pretty junk and clog rather quickly. Replace with a no clog air stone 👍

My first filters were box filters. They didn't have stands back then & we kept them weighed down with a large rock on top. We only had glass wool back then which got into your skin & was very irritating. Box filters are great for fry to swim into them & eat the detritus etc off the wool. Your idea to mod the outlet tube by extending it is great. I would cover the intake hole (only 1 inlet back then) with floss to prevent media from falling into it as I was filling the filter chamber because it is a pain to remove from that small space.
For the empty 20, blackwater apisto tank sounds good or since you are trying to get the blue tetras out to hobbyists, use it as another tank for them. Good luck & thank you for bringing these tetras to the hobby to save them.

I use the same box filter. But never thought of making the lift tube taller. Now I have to find where I can get the tube from.

I would love to see a tank with half beak live bearers... Its a species that is very scarce in our market and almost no youtube videos. Love your breeding project. Keep up the good work.

Very cool. That fry tank has those spiky balls. I didn't know you could use those.

Love your videos, and really like this filter, your using charcoal but putting it in a medicated qt tank, won’t the carbon remove the meds?

That's my question also. I thought you used charcoal to remove meds from your water after treatment. Love your videos but now I'm confused.

Aren't you supposed to remove certain filters while using meds because the meds will get removed by filtration.

First time finding this channel searching for box filter information. GOLD MINE of info! One major question though...I have a 10 gal I've had set up for a couple months now, parameters all over the place, and it looks exactly like the tank at about the 16:50 mark of this vid (maybe not as milky) that you said will probably always be like that until you tear it down. What's going on with it??
    GREAT INFO!!

im sorry this might be a really dumb question but im new to setting up my aquarium and im not quite understanding how this filter works. its an air pump and filter, but is water supposed to be going through the tubing? or is the tubing there to provide the air into the tank? i hope i worded this properly but im not sure if i set this up correctly and im having a hard time figuring it out

For the tank with the bacterial bloom, have you considered using Bacter AE or RidX to outcompete the bacteria that is in there?

  • @TheZenGinger
    @TheZenGinger 4 роки тому +2

OK... This might be a pointless question... but here goes, anyway! It looks like you might be medicating in the bucket... However, you called it a QT tank and I heard mention of meds... so I wanted to ask... Are you also using meds, in the QT tank, with the box filter? If NOT, then it all makes perfect sense to me, BUT IF YOU ARE, wouldn't the charcoal (even natural) and the chemi-pure stuff, remove any meds from the water? Again... if meds are not going in the actual tank... then I understand, it wouldn't really matter. I'm just curious if there NATURAL charcoal is different somehow?! Also... if you're leaning towards a blackwater bio-tope, have you considered dwarf gouramis? Or a betta? Then, maybe some little tetra or rasbora buddies? I really like the harlequins! 😁 Anyway... really appreciate the awesome content, as always. Thanks!

Looks like the water would bypass any floss on top with that design, wouldnt it ?

I'd put the Chemipure at the bottom of the filter, but if you have all those tanks of baby fish, you must be doing something right.

I suggest you fill the hole filter with biorings and just top it of with floss cause bacteria need some a home to live in! That bag of Carbon will not sterilize anything ok, carbon doesn´t kill bacteria ;)

Wouldn’t the chemical-pure remove your meds? Like having carbon with meds, it removes them, doesn’t it?
