Sponges may seem unsightly, but I remember back as a little kid the families first tank, with a clear internal box filter where you could watch the floss change colors and took up a chunk of real estate. These sponges are a great step up.

@@Mrdds1520 I just use an airline attached to the intake of the uplift tube. I use all 4 sizes some twin, some single sponge filters, so easy to clean - when you do a water change, just remove the sponge and squeeze it in the discarded tank water and then put it back...you will have cleaned the poop, etc, but leave plenty of bacteria in/on the sponge
to keep the balance in the tank., hope this helps.

I love these type of sponge filters. I have been using these for a few months with all my air pumps instead of airstones. So for me I like the extra filtration in my tanks so when I clean my main filters I still have plenty of beneficial bacteria. And another thing I love is it makes setting up new tanks or quarantine tanks easy. I can pull the sponges out of an established tank and put them in another tank. And because it's an extra filter I don't have to worry out crashing the established tank and quickly get the other tank up and running. These are awesome!

I’ve kept bettas for years but when I adopted my angelfish I had no idea what I was doing and since finding your channel you have taught me so much. I was specifically looking for a review for this hygger filter and was ecstatic when I saw you’ve posted a video about it. I just want to say thank you and to keep doing what you’re doing because you have helped me - and I’m sure thousands of others - exceed at fish keeping and it wouldn’t be without you and your wife. Same, this channel is a godsend for beginners. I haven't gotten bad advice yet. I started the hobby back in September. I hate to admit it but I failed my pet by not doing proper enough research before hand and my tank wasn't cycled. This channel saved my fish, who I love with all of my heart. I've been coming back ever since and now he's living his best life and I'm proud with how far I've come. People actually ask me for help now, haha.

I put one of the smallest ones in my new 5.5 betta tank. It’s a little large in there, but it works great. I stuffed the sponge into my 20 gallon’s hob to season for two weeks and am now cycling the new one with it in. Hopefully that speeds up the cycle. I’ve found you can adjust the volatility of the surface agitation from the bubbles by how deep it is.

These are my absolutely favorite sponge filters for a loooong time now... I was about to switch to the standing sponge filters from aquarium coop because I wanted to have a coarser sponge which are not available from Hygger... but Cory refused to ship to Germany (not an insult - I do understand the problem) and so I'm still with the Hygger's over and over. Nice to see, that they arrived in the US ;-) Usually it's the other way around... we in Germany are looking forward to things that is already "state of the art" in America.

One little suggestion though- the filters were all black, your shirt was black, the back tank was dark and, much as you said you weren’t sure about the overhead camera, it was thanks to that camera that we could see the filters the best because of the contrast against the wooden table top. So I’m glad for the overhead camera. Maybe a shirt that contrasts better with what you’re showing for the next one. 🙂

I LOVE the Hygger sponge filter. I've started switching all my tanks with HOB filters to the Hygger sponge filters. I've had fun decorating one of the tanks with plumbing pipes and kindda added some pipes to house the air tubes running to the sponge filters. Makes the filter look part of the underwater pipework decorations. Loving it. I work for a leading retail pet supply company and I wish we were carrying the Hygger.
Fast forward 6+ months. I wish Hygger had a hanger which attached over the tank wall and held the filter system in place, so you can lift the unit out of the tank to pull off a sponge or get into the bio-material compartment. Sticking you arm halfway between your elbow and armpit to reach a sponge or bio-material cup is kindda insane.

I ordered 4 of them. 2 medium and 2 small. I deep cleaned my guppy/corydora tank tonight and installed the small one and BAM it’s working beautifully. My cories are really enjoying the extra floor space and my guppies are playing in the water spout. Excellent product so far so I highly recommend it! Next, I am upgrading my oranda tank.

John, as in as you put these on the website I ordered. One is in the 55 gallon and the other one is in the 40 gallon breeder. They are amazing and completely agree with you about how awesome they work!!!
Every single feature that you promoted was right on target!
Both the medium and the small powered sponge filters work in total silence. You cannot hear anything. Just like you, I cannot stand the vibrating noises that the air pumps create. Especially in the bedroom tank! Ps… He did great with the overhead camera why are you complaining?!

You have my attention, good sir.
I will be placing an order for the smallest one following this comment, so the following is not meant to sound negative in any manner, I'm just looking for your opinion.
In my experience over low these many year, I have found suction cups to be untrustworthy. Whether we're talking about suction cups for heaters, or thermometers or airline, they all fail sooner or later. Now, I was actually paying attention for a change and heard you say that you've been testing these for months before putting them on the website. Have you had any issues with the suction cups failing?
I was very close to you're answer. Very close. When asked what do these look like, I immediately thought of the compliment to the cocoa puff, the peanut butter flavored puffs you find in Reese's Puffs.

I actually bought the nano filter a week ago for a 6 gallon tank and I love it so far. I actually used the spare sponge on the air output pipe to help diffuse the large bubbles it releases since my air pump isn’t adjustable. Pretty cool to see you guys talking about the same sponge though!

Your air pump is adjustable. You just need to attach a air control valve to the air line. They cost like $2.

One can tell the honesty of a Fish Supplier who is excited making a 28 minute video on a Filter that does not use Consumable Filters. I am using Sponge Filters in 3 of my tanks. I really want to try out that smaller one for my small tanks, the one with 2 compartments for the cocoa puffs, and the powered sponge filters. Super ideas! Oh, the the Air pumps when they get to close to something and start vibrating drive me crazy too, John!

i personally think translucent plumbing my filters is great, as it's way easier to diagnose potential clogs.
when i just started out i had issues with my filter not working due to the hoses and pipes being black, and due to my inexperience, so now i just prefer translucent pipes and hoses as i can easily see when they're starting to gunk up.

I gave my wife a 55 gallon aquarium set up when we were dating 30 years ago. I wanted it to be easy for her to maintain. I set it up and then put a pond filter(coffee can sized) at each back corner of the tank. Tossed the riser tube and used some one inch pvc for new risers. Cut them off below the surface to allow a powerhead to sit on each riser. Either 250 gph or 400gph. I no longer remember which. I gave her directions. Each week remove four gallons of tank water and wash one filter sponge in it. Return it to the tank and refill the tank. Alternating each sponge a week apart. I gave her a couple of dozen African fry and in a year she had a tank with nearly two dozen five inch fish. All in full color in a crystal clear tank. I did put some large plastic plants in front of the filters to hide them to some degree. It's nearly impossible to overfilter a tank unless you put fish in that need calm water like bettas. Underfiltering is likely the most common issue for new hobbyists. Consider needing to move four to ten times the tank volume per hour for proper filtering.

Newbie here. I still dont understand how they work...why doesn't the sponge have to be positioned vertically? Bubbles go against gravity in water i.e. up. Can you do a cut-away, or show one in action while horizontal?
