B Boys kept it real during the 80s and 90s. When the popular music was hair metal and grunge, and gangster rap was exploding, B Boys kept pumping out classic hip hop and breakdance beats, and sprinkled in songs that featured their punk rock roots. Like AdRock said, "you think I'm gonna change up my style just to fit in?"

Thanks for reacting to Beastie Boys... There is nothing that gives me more appreciation for the groups of my youth than watching someone else hear the stuff for the first time.

The respecting women part was a reference to their first album. They grew up a bit and felt bad about all the bitches and hos lyrics from there. That's why he said it was long-overdue. This was the apology for that.

    • @SeditiousJerk
      @SeditiousJerk 3 роки тому +9

This is true, but it was also commentary on the trend of the day amongst most hip-hop artists that showed almost zero respect to any female unless they were a family member. I'm not judging, but most of the major acts at the time wouldn't refer to a female as anything but a bitch or a ho.

    • @Brashnir

pantyhose was that circular pop filter. It is a noise protection filter for microphones, typically used in a recording studio. It serves to reduce or eliminate popping sounds caused by the mechanical impact of fast-moving air on the microphone. There is a quick frame of it in the video right after MCA says it

It's called a popper stopper, (pantyhose being the poor man's version) used to stop the hard P sounds (and D, S, T etc) from "popping" on the meter and recording tape, but Beasties don't give a fuck about natural pops and clicks on the tape. Handholding a mic would almost guarantee thumps and bumps when recording. MCA he is so good at microphone control he can do it handheld and doesn't need a mic stand and popper stoppers.
MCA's verse about respecting women is to show they grew up from the days they rapped about sticking children's toys in girls.

Lee Dorsey was a R&B, soul, funk singer from the 60's who sang "Workin in a Coal Mine" and also sang "Get Out Of My Life Woman", which coincidentally is a highly sampled song in hip hop; ok I googled that myself. Rod Carew was thought to have converted to judaism; though there's no solid evidence to support it, he was married to a Jewish woman(the Beasties are Jewish, though they never really rap about it). maybe I googled everything in this comment, but just to give you knowledge.

Cane will cross fade on your ass and bust your eardrums
Listen everybody 'cause I'm shifting gears
I'm fresh like Dougie when I get my specs
And on the microphone, I come correct
Timing like a clock when I rock the hip-hop
Top notch is my stock on the soapbox
I've got more rhymes than I've got gray hairs
And that's a lot because I've got my share (oohh, weee)
I've got a hole in my head and there's no one to fix it
    I gotta straighten my thoughts
I'm thinking too much (yeah) sick shit
Everyone just takes and takes, takes, takes, takes
I'll have to step back, I gotta contemplate
Well, I'm like Lee Perry, I'm very on
Rock the microphone, and then I'm gone
I'm like Vaughn Bode, I'm a Cheech Wizard
Never quittin', so won't you listen
Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, yes, indeed, it's fun time
Because you can't, you won't, and you don't stop
Because you can't, you won't, and you don't stop
Well, you can't, you won't, and you don't stop
Mca, come and rock the sure shot
I want to say a little something that's long overdue
The disrespect to women has got to be through
To all the mothers and the sisters and the wives and friends
I want to offer my love and respect to the end
    Well, you say I'm twenty-something
    And I should be slacking
But I'm working harder than ever
And you could call it macking
So I'm supposed to sit upon my couch just watching my TV
    I'm still listening to wax
    I'm not using the CD!
Well, I'm that kid in the corner
All fucked up and I wanna
    So I'm gonna (yeah)
Take a piece of the pie
    Why not, I'm not quittin'
Think I'm-a change up my style just to fit in
I keep my underwear up with a piece of elastic
I use a bullshit mic that's made out of plastic
To send my rhymes out to all the nations Like Ma Bell
    I got the ill communication
'Cause you can't, you won't, and you don't stop
'Cause you can't, you won't, and you don't stop
Well, you can't, you won't, and you don't stop

The Beastie Boys are in the top 5 hip hop groups of all time. I graduated high school in 1995 and the Beatie’s were on fire at that time. I’ll Communication and Check Your Head were being played at parties constantly. I had a epic party the night before senior ditch day and so many people showed up. We went through 7 kegs that night, which at that time period was epic for a high school party and When “Fight for your right “ came on chicks were jumping in the pool with their bra’s and panties and off course the fellas followed. At my graduation when we threw our caps in the air “Fight for your right came on” and the party started and continued that whole weekend. I showed up bombed for the graduation ceremony and so did most of my friends because we were parting prior to this. Oh great times

I only saw them once unfortunately and it was in 2003. There was no opening act on the ticket or bill. The show starts and for about 10 minutes or so they had all sorts of dogs doing tricks and jumping through hoops. This is in a 25,000 seat basketball arena. Following the dogs Talib Kweli played a short set and then the beastie boys followed to absolutely kill it for a couple hours. No other band did it like them with a mix of hard rock, hip-hop, instrumental music and they were real musicians who made and played those beats. Than you for the great content.

Late to the birthday 🤓 but glad to subscribe. You get it. I was fortunate enough to see them live in Memphis in 1987. I was about to turn fifteen. Changed my life. I’m a professional piano player and singer in the panhandle of Florida. All I listened to for the next couple of years was Beastie Boys, The Cult, INXS, REM, U2, CROWDED HOUSE (FAVORITE). There is some great music in that genre from 1986 - 1990. Check some of if out. Okay gonna binge some of your reactions. A happy Florida “medical🌳👍” patient. Keep it up. ❤️

this track is from the best bb-vinyl "ill communication". one of my favourite alltime-records.it also contains "heart attack man" < a 2min punk-rock-song :-) but why?
well, some people don't know that the band started in 1978 as a "Hardcore-Punk-Band" and were named „The Young Aborigines“ before they switchted to hip hop. On stage the BBs played their instruments like guitars, drums and stuff live!

Rod Carew is 1 of the 10 greatest hitters in baseball history.
.328 lifetime batting average in a VERY pitcher dominant era.
Think Ted Williams had him ranked in his top 3.

Another BANGER from Beastie Boys! Love this song so much. Their bars are 🔥🔥🔥. Also, at the end where MCA says "like Ma Bell I got the ill communication" the story behind Ma Bell is funny/cool. They reference her throughout the album on different tracks and it's worth reading about that reference.
Also another fun fact, Spike Jonze who directed this video really wanted to shoot them inside the casino and the casino said NO so Spike hid a camera and they filmed it anyway.
As always RIP MCA! You are loved and missed! 🙏🏾🙏🏾

We just enjoy seeing you discover great music for the first time. As long as you keep it real, you'll do just fine. Let's get this man to 30k!

8:38 Im using the Wax not the CD....
He is saying they still spin records. Old School style.
They very first recording ever were made on Wax tubes...
    Were records made of wax?
The short answer is that modern vinyl records are made of polyvinyl chloride, not from wax. However, there is such a thing as a wax record that is indeed made of wax. The wax record was a cylinder of wax used with phonographs and graphophones to record sound and play it back from the record.
