Hey all! You asked, we listened! We have a demo version of TILT available over at our website! (I'd link but youtube isn't seeming to like that) Enjoy and happy mixing! -Jesse from Mixland
Ive just spoken to Darude and he wholeheartedly endorses this channel and massively appreciates all your continued support and the much needed exposure you are giving Sandstorm 💖
No return policy and no demo version available…. Imagine if that was a game with game breaking bugs. I remember a time when software was distributed on physical media that you could at least return it to the store if it didn’t work.
Don't you dare touch the Sandstorm meme! It's legendary at this point. Also, thanks for another awesome Snake Oil review. I've been a loud voice saying you should do more snake oil videos, but I also want you to make what you're happy making. Whatever you put out, I'll watch. Thanks again
I don't understand why a plugin shouldn't slightly change the waveforms when it is at zero. Analog gear does it as well, that is why we use gear. What we don't do these days: get to know our tools. Only when you use a tool for several hours you know how to work with it and if you know that it for instance bumps up the 1k band, then you know that you have to counteract that. It is as simple as that. This "hysteria" you are enacting in this video is completely constructed. That said: UAD has a very good TiltEQ plugin, that does the same thing - add character when you just put it in your signal chain without even having a single knob turned. And I love it and I use it.
Really happy to see a proper snake oil destruction again. You liked so many of the plugins you made snake oil reviews of lately that I wondered whether something happened 😂
@@Mansardian like one year, it's great. Every now and than i discover something new and useful. The last discover for me was the "solo dim" and the volume knobs on audio end midi items.🎺🎺
Plenty of guitar and bass pedals have what are effectively tilt EQs labeled as tone controls. The Tube Screamer's tone control for example works this way, the circuit is actually pretty simple iirc
I find in a mastering context tilt eq's are most effective when used dynamically if tilting more than 1db. Snapping back to null when the transients kick it.
@@brainbonkk I should clarify, it would be useful to test other plugins for snake oil as it shows eq, phase, and gain differences that a plug-in causes
That stuff may not actually work that high due to frequency cramping. Happens at the Nyquist frequency. If you’re running your sessions at 44 or 48 kHz. It’s a high shelf working up to 22/24 kHz and dropping rapidly at the nyquist. And they gimmick you because most ears can’t even hear that.
Probably one of the first inventions of the tilt ‚eq‘ is the Eckmiller NF11 ‚Niveaufilter‘ Danner modules from the early 60ies (age of the famous V72). The first popular reincarnation afaik came from Tonelux (Tilt EQ). A high end approach is Tubetech‘s HLT A2 which incorporates a tilt filter and a low and high shelf.
" Out of topic" regarding the plugin but "big thumps up" to whoever made the sound selection - programming for the track you're using as a test. Recognition is always a good thing and must be given. Especially in nowadays.
I had the same issue with this plugin. I noticed that it was seemingly crushing the snare transients in a rock track and after doing some digging I realized that the plug-in was adding saturation to the mix. I just wanted a simple tilt eq to help with a straying master. Something that sounds good but it's just a bit too bright or bassy and to just nudge it in the other direction, but saturation absolutely is a no go for me. Such a shame.
Unlinked, 40KHz, boosting the highs would make a nice air plugin, however, I would prefer a graphic EQ interface for a tilt, it seems odd to do it with knobs.
Great content as always, and honest. So important for us all to stay honest. Lets face it, its pretty rare now that a plugin is different enough to anything else out there now that makes it worth spending money on. Unless you're brand new. But there are probably tonnes of free tilt eq's out there anyway. For me this technique is always berrer done manually, as you might not want the tilt to be changing the same amount on top and bottom. Sometimes you might want to cut boost the highs while saturating the lows, not just turning them down. ETC etc. For me almost any plugin that comes out these days with "special" features, can be done inside FL Studios patcher with some clever routing using any plugin on the planet that you desire. I'm sure other DAWs have similar environments to patcher too these days. It really is a golden feature whereby we can essentially make our own tools using others.
Are running a Mac Mini? Same here. I perform voice talent for corporate narratives, commercials, documentaries, etc., so I rarely have more than one track to record and edit, and I find that my Mac Mini i7, running 64-bit Reaper, and with two, solid-state hard drives is perfect for my work. If they would be 100% sure about the product they wouldn't be afraid of returns or try outs. Looks scamish to me.

@@TjMoon91What I meant was, there's no "zero" setting on the plugin itself. It's always set half-way when you load it up. Meaning, you need to bypass / enable the plugin each time you don't want the effect it offers.

that’s what i was thinking. just because we can’t hear 40k doesn’t mean that a 40k capability in an EQ is pointless! it has a purpose and it can be heard.
That’s what I said! It’s a tube stage emulation. I was wondering how loud his pink noise was too because if it was loud enough to push the tube stage at all, then-like you said, it’s non linear, the input level matters. Either way, pink noise is every frequency at once, where the sine wave was just one frequency. It’s kinda comparing apples and oranges when your talking about feeding them to what seems like a perfectly decent analog emulation to see how it reacts to each. That looks like the behavior you’d hope to see from an analog emulation working just as it should-having different reactions to each, even turned down all the way. It’s the “sound of the components.” If it didn’t have the tube stage, and claimed to be a clean, linear eq, then yeah, you’d want to see no change when it turns on at zero. But that’s not what this plug-in is!
The problem with the trial versions is quite small at these prices. If you look in the category "virtual instruments", you'll see that you don't get a test period from any manufacturer and here we're talking in the price category off 700€
@@matt_nyc_audioengineer Sure. Some manufacturers offer a demo version or at least a much trimmed light version. But if you look at the "big players" like Spitfire Audio or ORCHESTRAL TOOLS, they only refer to their walkthrough videos.
YOU'RE kind of snake-oily here, tbh, Wytse. It's too hard to believe that you've never encountered the concept that analogue circuits (like tubes, for instance), and plugin emulations of those circuits change the tone ("add mojo"), and that people OFTEN choose a specific circuit or emulation for that tonal colouration. The tube emulation aspect of this plugin is not meant to compete with the transparency of Pro-Q3, and I can't believe that needs to actually be put into words! That whole part was just dishonest, imo.
I literally said all the exact same stuff! I concur 100%, they didn’t claim it was clean! It’s a non linear emulation of an analog circuit that’s easily pushed into tube overdrive. The single sine wave was one single frequency. Pink noise is all the frequencies… I would hope it reacts differently to each, even turned all the way down. “Sound of the components” mean anything to anyone? Isn’t half the point of having pultec or neve stuff for example the “flavor” it imparts on the signal as long as it’s on, and being fed a healthy input level? Even if it’s not “doing anything.” And you don’t have to dig deep into Dan woralls channel to come across an explanation of nonlinearities. Wytse is an analog hardware enthusiast, he knows this. But he didn’t even keep testing after he jumped the gun and just decided to brand it snake oil… for doing what they said it would do! 🧐🤨😤
Signal flow! How loud was your pink noise? The tube stage is non linear which means if you were feeding it enough signal, of course it would do something! I don’t think that’s snake oil, I think that’s a realistic emulation of analog tube behavior! I say give it another chance-did you stop testing it after the pink noise issue? If so, there is probably more to the picture!
cool plugin. i think you misunderstood your measurements tho. when running a plugin at sine waves doesn't cause distortion there just is no distortion. the gain changes when you bypassed it are probably just the result of the filters being turned on or off

Irrelevant question for this video but.. Have you ever received a mixing or mastering request from someone that you had to decline because the production was too bad and there was just no way you could make it sound good?
Yes, I turn projects down all the time.
@@matt_nyc_audioengineer Wasn't asking you lol
@@ToxiKraft Ya, I'm aware. I wasn't tagged, I'm not stupid. BUT I do mix and master around 200 projects a year professinally so I figured maybe you would want to hear from someone with real-world experience. :-D
I own 400+ plugins. I use less than half. There are too many to keep track of. I came to realize I could survive with a 100, maybe a 150.
Still a lot tho
Hard disagree with this review. Plugin sounds great. It has a sound when you turn it on like MANY plugins and hardware pieces do.
As long as Darude himself say stop,,, you should not stop it's illigal
unlink it. You can drive it (or bring it down... same for the highs. I hate to say... but this video is the only one I was a little disappointed with. But, I'm not calling the review 'Snake Oil' 😂
Comment for da algorithm

TDR SlickEq GE ftw!
I have heard 100 versions of Sandstorm by Darude now
"What is your goal?" "Making money..."
Its so sad the joke is now a joke..... It was like learning engineering before the internet.... You'd go away and research...... And even now, you dont even need to leave a screen........
Its sad to see , but more so , hear the reasons of what shouldn't be....I love that joke.... Geez, I love the vid you did see old analog synths, years ago (Juno?) , but ,cmon, do make it easy for the rest... Its like explaining a punch line........ Which its become..... :(
Still.... Love your channel.... And "Van Der Valk" 72'.. im old ( yes, school concert, I rocked the theme on my "Jason" Guitar)
Thanks for your honest review. I'm not interested and dislike this plugin. Pure snake oil. Neeext....
must have plugin!!!!

Blue glow is gas in tubes, not a good sign, think they need maintenance.
