I don't think the audio needs to change depending on the plugin format. The plugin just gets buffers full of floats, whether it's vst or CLAP or anything else. Afaik.
Keep going with your excellent presentations. I am 68 years old and have seen and experienced some audio people arrive and leave. Transparency in teaching is key. Young people entering this engineering sector need to be pationate and obsessed with being openminded to absorb different opinions. Met vriendelijke groet
Don’t worry about the haters or the people saying weird stuff about you. I love your style. I always like to watch all of your plug-in reviews. I agree that the Fab filter in-house tutorials cover everything better than anyone else. Keep doing what you’re doing. I love your channel. And keep your enthusiasm because it’s very appealing. 😊👍
Heeey Wytse, happy new year! 🙃 Sascha here (former Tegler Audio) As good as the FabFilter videos are, I just loved your Pro-Q4 review. It was so much fun watching you explore one feature after another and being so excited about it 💚
Good reason to use spectral EQ is for example for de-essing. You cannot fix that at the source, you need to do that in post. And there are many things you need to fix in post. This why we have these modern tools, these FFT filters. Back in the day we said "you can't fit it in the mix" but nowadays we can fix a lot in the mix. In fact we will fix everything after it was recorded. I never ever hear something that is untreated these days. Everything is polished.
well, don't you think that "simpletons" is a little bit harsh to those poor figures who are being forced to watch UA-cam and cannot even choose wich channel? 😉
17:43 - Yes, it definitelly scales the amount of processing. I made myself a template where I have Pro-Q 4 on every single track (around 300 tracks lol). And it's very fast when all of them are activated but unchanged. The simple bands are also quite fast. It starts to get a bit slower when you turn on the dynamic functions, and ESPECIALLY when you turn on the spectral functions. If you also turn on the Linear Phase and make it High quality or better, it can really make your computer struggle.
if you don't mind me asking, what sort of music do you make w/ 300 tracks? I'm assuming some kind of EDM? or is this more for TV/Movie sound production? I've made songs w/ 64 tracks, and maybe the first 40 or so were actual instruments. The rest were doubled vocals and sound fx, lead in, lead out, etc.
@@pewburrito I'm making metal, but I add a ton of orchestral and electronic elements. I pretty much approach metal as if it was a cinematic soundtrack in a way. The 300 tracks are just in my template, I usually don't use all of them. I keep them in my template so I can quickly use it if I need it!
I have to credit my perchase of the fabfilter total bundle to you, although I didn't use an affiliate link (this was pre ff + pb and I also got a student discount). Seeing you talk about them in the past made me so excited, and it was such an improvement to my workflow. Thanks!
"According to some comments it was the worst video ever made, according to other comments it was the best video ever made" Ah, so it was a video on UA-cam.
As many as there are already, always great to see another 500 companies' pultec software emulations vs the hardware. Would be extra cool if you could get an original vintage unit to add to the mix vs the Stam & software! Happy new year!
P.S., on the manual reading vs going in blind, I actually find it super helpful to see the first impression without reading the manual! If there's a thing that's annoying or a missing feature, I'd love to figure out that it's not an issue upon reading the manual for myself, but going in totally blind is a great gauge on how intuitive a plugin or piece of gear is by nature. Don't think your approach should change!
I understand your excitement - it means you have a true passion for what you do - In my humble opinion - this is the best plugin testing channel I know - here plugin testing is more in-depth - not superficial. Forget the haters - keep it up, it's awesome!!!
I would love to see the video on spectral compression! I recently purchased fabfilter and have been using smooth operator for over a year. I know mixing engineers who use soothe 2 on almost every track. Would love to see your opinions on how to use it correctly / moderately.
Happy New Year Wyste! Yes, please make both plugin comparison videos! I don't think the Omnipressor plugin is going to hold up to the hardware. Only because how much is going on inside. The Omnipressor plugin is very good tho! However, I feel like the difference between the Pultec clone and software will be MUCH closer. Very curious to see how they turn out. Ya, I surprised Pro Q4 didn't have transient/sustain mode as well! However, I would still use Split EQ for it because while other companies have given the option they don't have all the other parameters to tweak like Split EQ does. So FF would have to make sure to have those same options as well for me to get rid of Split EQ. Those extra options make ALL the difference most of the time (Seperation, decay, and smooth). The other thing I would like to know is what "sonic" changes were made because on the FF website it says (or at least it did, it's possible they changed it) that the also updated the sound quality but I've seen several null tests that disprove this. Pro Q3 and 4 perfectly null with each other. So I would like to hear an explanation from FF about what they meant when they said that and why it was said. I belive it was the top listed feature in the updates on the product page! Or at least on of the top ones.
Yes I would love to see the videos you suggested. I've already watched a comparison between hardware and software Omnipressor and the difference was pretty big in my opinion, but I still want to see you tackle it because I care about what you say and also the video I watched wasn't too detailed. Tube EQs, same deal.
I'd be interested in both the videos you mentioned, the Pultec & Omnipressor one. Did you see the Eventide video a few years back with the original engineer talking about the omnipressor and someone says something like "of course you wouldn't be able to make something like that now for a reasonable price" and the engineer looks thoughtful and says "well maybe you could". Don't know if it was a set up but it was a few years before the remake appeared.
You can please some of the people some of the time, but not all of the people all of the time. Just trust your own gut and go with it, and also accept that you won't always get it right. I enjoy your videos.
Best wishes for 2025 Wytse! Funny, since I keep watching your video's for the (positive) energy, so please keep being yourself :p Bought the upgrade for pro q4, just now. And figured, why not buy SplitEQ while it's on (holiday) sale..('till last week) Upgraded monitor speakers coming monday; so also big plans for 2025! *Excitement*
Another use-case for spectral compression is working with sample libraries and modeled instruments. I had a solo violin lib that was great for its many articulations but I wasn't ever happy with its basic tone, which was infected with some obnoxious inharmonic resonances. For the first time, thanks to ProQ-4's spectral filter I am able to use it without grimmacing.
I love how people think you setting up a recording setup, pressing record and then capturing the scene you want means it's fake... I wanna see what those people think of how movies are produced...
I just sent mine back. Ran into the same problem . Great sound but it’s the tube. They burn out super fast. Replaced it multiple times. The unit gets tooooo hot. I don’t think it will work long term. Sweetwater was great about making it right.
I have never used the Omnipressor hardware but have used the plugin for a long time and love it. It sounds amazing and I think it is very accurate relative to the hardware. And a good way to learn how just how the Omnipressor works in either hardware or plugin form.
Unfortunately Wytse yes all of your affiliate links Will have been compromised by anyone viewer who has installed honey at any point. I'm afraid I used to be one of them 😔
No need in transient split fuction in Q4. Just use dynamic band with proper attack-release. Just boost or cut with quick attack and release. Its kinda the same))) Sry for my english. And there a lot of multiband transienе shapers, even free, like Pancz.
Definetely read the manual. You read the manual for us and we trust your opinion. If we supposed to read the manual ourselves we have no reason to come to your channel, besides maybe of "he is cute"-reason, but not working for me. aahahah. usually ppl call "annoying" some kinds of deep research into hardware abilities. they want u just to say "we turn that knob and everything magically sounds great". no. wait. no knobs. turning knobs is annoying. u just put it on chain and here it is. done. yeah. we all want that to be so ez... just a dream XD

definitely make a spectral compression video

Wait, can’t you run the dynamic eq to do the same thing “split” eq can do?
Pretty sure eventide split eq is patented.. and cannot be used on other companies eq's.. I could be wrong though?
