    I really like Jordan. He's a good guy & has helped me a lot over the last year with certain mixing situations from his channel as I'm learning. He's a metal/rock producer that started this company. Even though this has some usues on single tracks here & there, I haven't given it a second thought because of the price. And, I also have plenty of other distortion/saturation plugins. Like the Black Box, Black Box MS, Abbey Road by Waves.

    Level matching is not for saturation... It's more for compression. The whole point of these plugins is to ADD harmonic content.........

  • @achillesmusicoz
    @achillesmusicoz 3 роки тому +4

    So true what you said about loudness and A/B'ing. It seems so obvious but it's not talked about enough in the audio world. So many manufacturers seem to know that the average person doesn't really take this into account and even sometimes set the default/init state of their plugins to simply be a couple of dB louder. It should be illegal. Izotope seem to be the exception to that rule, and most of their plugins have auto-gain matching options.

    I am a fan of Jordan, who runs Black Salt Audio. He's a fantastic engineer, teacher, and motivator. I am enrolled in his mixing course and I don't think it is necessarily expensive. It's a great value. I also actually really like these plugins. But that was all prefacing to what I'm about to say: It's kind of nuts how expensive this plug-in is. The pricing was a bad move. I think the whole 'perceived value' psychology went a bit overboard with this one. I hope he considers lowering the price. I want this thing, but I'm not paying that much for it. And I am definitely the type to buy a plug-in I really like. But the Escalator is not worth this price IMO.

    • @GreatBurningNullifier
      @GreatBurningNullifier 3 роки тому

      As someone who has taken various courses from him, I feel like those leave a little to be desired too, and are a bit pricey, especially compared to other courses like the ones on creative live, don't get me wrong, I'm not a hater, but I think he's way off with his pricing in general, and he uses a lot of bs psychological marketing techniques like closing access to his courses making you feel like you're missing out so you end up pulling the trigger and buying the courses, which are not cheap at all, specially if you live outside of the north American or European territory.

    Gain matching with plugins is crucial if you want to really know if your moves are actually making the mix better. It's so easy to be fooled by volume. Do you have to match volume exactly? Possibly not, but it better be damn close. Not gain-staging your plugins is the main reason why you can't get a loud mix because you've eaten up all your headroom in your system.

    Does this perception plugin can also do a double blind test? Like shuffling PRE and POST cards and not telling you which is witch until you choose to reveal them. Should be amazing to avoiding confirmation bias.
    Also all this saturation stile plugins not necessarily maliciously add loudness, it increasing naturally just because we now have "more sound" and they are just to lazy to build a compensator (and it makes plugin more expensive to develop, more power hungry and increases latency and makes it less marketable if it is always on). Of course they should have the option, same as with oversampling.

I don’t buy the notion that creating an automatic loudness match is programmatically difficult. I do buy the idea that many developers look to get around 1 dB of loudness gain in their algorithms.

You mentioned you were looking into how eq's are programmed but what about oversampling and I/O levels? They should be in anything calling its self a "professional" audio product imho. I love the thoughts on loudness- and not levelcompensation for plugins. I think in mixing situations you are absolutely right (in mastering I actually like to hear how much loudness I'm getting - since the balance is established and I can hear if something throws off the balance (which sucks - when it happens)). However the problem is: nothing can really put perceived loudness into a number. They tried with LUFS.. but we all know this didn't actually work, because there are plenty of mixes at the same LUFS and some of them are perceived SIGNIFICANTLY louder than others. And I think that's the reason why the "outputknob" is THE way to to go. A/B and adjust the output-knob until you are certain that the loudness is not impacted - that's the only way to really judge it. Because saturation, clipping, distortion etc all makes stuff louder without raising the level as much as the loudness. But that's a good topic and I agree with most thoughts. Just adding mine.
    PS: If it is one day possible to ACTUALLY have an AI levelmatch perceived loudness of plugins, I would love if all plugins had that. And then I'd also want them to add a little number that tells me how much it's turning down the volume in order to loudnessmatch it. Because level/peaks are important too. For instance if I mix into a compressor (on the mix-bus) and the peaks change in level, it is quite possible that I have to turn up the input on the mixbuscompressor in order for it to engage the way I want it to engage.

    A fellow youtube studio guy.......I follow him sometimes. He's got some good content, and this is his first venture into the plugin market. This isn't bad, but it's nothing new really, and I've got several other plugs that already do this, and more. $100??, too much imho :-/

    • @matt_nyc_audioengineer
      @matt_nyc_audioengineer 3 роки тому

      He's not a good person dude. It's plain as day if you pay attention to the stuff he does. Even in his videos. He's supposed to be teaching people man. He does, but he makes you pay for it! Noone else does that! Sure some of them also sell courses but the info that he gives for free is poor at best lol.

    • @7stringprogmetalguy616
      @7stringprogmetalguy616 3 роки тому

      Yeah, the guy in question has some good content but at least half of what he does is a cash grab. I don’t necessarily blame him - we all gotta make a living and doing it with music is harder than most things. This plugin is a joke though. He made a video a while back offering to hire someone to work on commission to make these and that should have been where it started and ended.

      @@7stringprogmetalguy616 I don't know him personally, so I'm careful to not trash a stranger online. I've picked up some good tips from his content, and put them directly into my learning and work. As far as him marketing himself, I don't pay much attention to that honestly. There's a handful of youtube studio people who charge for their courses, or "extended content" offerings. I haven't put out a dime for any of that, but I don't have a problem with them doing it. As far as his venture into creating plugins....this was nothing notable , imho. It sounds like basic saturation "coding"?, and not worth $100.
      I'm able to wade through all these content creators, and pick out what I find useful.
      Wytse(sp?) is one of the most honest knowledgeable youtube content creators. His take on this new plug was fair and to the point, and I see no issue with that. Nothing more to say about it really.

    PLEASE, PLUGIN MAKERS, DO AUTOMATIC LOUDNESS COMPENSATION. PLEASE. Having to do the whole bypass plugin/turn plugin back on to see how it compares/fiddle with plugin gain/bypass plugin/etc. thing gets really annoying. Not even FabFilter does it (unless I haven't found it?) and I would really like to instantly know whether I'm actually improving things with compression/limiting/saturation or just turning it into a load of overly loud dog shit and my brain just thinks it's better because of volume.

    It seems kind of pricey for something just has one knob. Why doesn’t it have the “Simple!” Button with a picture of former president George Bush Junior on it, like what ASIO4ALL used to have? A complicated to set up audio tool, but at least the developer had a sense of humor with this “Simple” button. Something tells me that what this one knob plugin is doing, probably already exists as stock plugin in the average .
