Hey Wytse, one point I disagree with is your focus solely on resale value when judging the difference between hardware and software. I believe the value of a purchase lies in its utility. Software that effectively improves workflow, optimizes results, and increases productivity and income can be far more valuable than the resale value of a piece of hardware gear. This perspective shifts our focus from "how much it costs to get" to "how much income it can generate. That said I agree we you that the real question remains "do you need it?"
The way you shout at the beginning of each of your videos is very special, I imagine those who listen to you on headphones, thinking they hear a sweet mastered Jazz sound... Excellent recommendations!
It's so true, when i started music i installed every crack copy of every plugin that ever came out, now i have a couple of legitimate eq's , compressors etc and some great vst instruments for "real" music. It focuses your mind and work flow
Hi Wytse! Great video, as always! What drive models do you use on console 1? Im on the fence and trying to figure out if its worth the financial hit. Thanks.
Your videos look good enough already. Also slicker vids don't necessarily equal better vids. Ditch the extra video gear and save up for the Alpha instead! ❤
Console 1 really takes up a large portion of tooling for your workflow, which doesn't surprise me as they've really hit the mark in functionality (Including support for UAD plugins) and hardware control; basically taking the spot on top of your DAW to control every aspect of mixing. A bit pricey for the hobbyist though. The Elysia Alpha has won my heart last year, epic compressor for complete control of focus and stereo image. Ofcourse the VST for me, the real thing would be wasted on me for that amount of money. Your multiband compression philosophy based on the 5 bands, does it divide the spectrum as sub, bass, midrange, presence and brilliance? I usually struggle with deciding where to split between the latter two. Would love to know how you approached the definition of the bands in a way that it makes sense to you. Funny to see you reach for a sub generator for the kicks; Somehow I wouldn't expect that. Nothing wrong with that, just surprised. :)
When I feel like a MB compressor is needed, it is mostly because there are elements in my mix that produce an imbalance. So when i put an MB compressor on, I look at the spectrum analyzer where those elements sit roughly and then set the crossover in between. Then I move the crossover around for a bit and listen.
Great video 🙏🏼 I have about 1000 plugins (Mixing, Mastering, FX, Guitar Stuff, MIDI Instruments, etc.) and I definitely need to cut it in half, AT LEAST
@charlychalton7743 not really, it all started with wanting to have every possible VSTi, in case I needed a tambourine, Hurdy Gurdy or Kazoo. my mixing snd mastering plugins look reasonable but those other ones, man
Second-hand software is a thing, at least from what I see from Chinese internet. But that is still mostly happening mostly ONLY when reselling owned-hardware, such as the software coming with the midi controller. I think the reason why reselling software is not popular is because license transfer is not that easy: technically and also confidence wise. Technically, nowadays companies bind licenses to your personal account with lots of your personal information, and somtimes it's not clear whether chaging login email is possible or not. A solution like iLok is both conveninent & annoying at the same time (some software like Slate requires the USB dongle to activate). But iLok USB dongle can solve the confidence issue in trading. But I wish it's a more open solution, that is, we can use any (cheaper) USB memory stick to make a iLok license stick rather than using the official hardware.
add: when in M/S mode, you also might want to disable the "link" button. That'll open up a new world for you. Anyway, if you're ever in the neighborhood of Mol, Belgium, shoot me a DM over Instagram and feel free to come by to hear it yourself.
My current plugin folder contains about 100 plugins in total. i think i have like 200 (incl stock plugins) installed but many of them i replaced with better ones over time. I only buy new ones if they can do something really importang that i cannot replicate with the ones i have (which gets more difficult with each additional one) or if one new plugin can eleminate 2 or more existent ones (like the kirchhoff eq), so i can keep my folder small and clean. Over the span of a year i think i have a turnover of ~15 plugins, which i have then time to learn properly.
I use U&AD and console 1 and these are mostly what I use. I have tried lots of other plugins but can mostly get by with a few utility plugins and some free and cheap Izotope plugins. 🤗
I also find the sonible smart:limiter a little bit more clear then the fabfilter Pro-L. The only issue I have with the sonible stuff is, I'm on linux and do a lot of experimenting an reinstallations. And sonible needs a new activation slot for each reinstallation on linux, because it thinks it is a new PC or so :) And with sonible you habe just 5 activation slots, and there is no way to reactivate an old "machine" that doesn't exist anymore. I want to add, that the people at sonibel helped me out, when I realized there are only 5 slots. But I rather don't experiment no more, with one of their plugins installed :) So for now I would give fabfilter the win.
I wonder why you're using Pro-Q3 inside C1 instead of Modern Eq which is mapped better IMO and it's easier to get the desired sound quicker from my experience. Pro-Q3 feels too sensitive inside C1, you barely touch it and it goes 3dB up or down
when you said that the delay has "as many problems as I do mentally"...OHMYGOODNESS!!! Wow did I ever loose it in fits of laughter.. out loud by myself...alone here in my studio... I had to actually "rewind" and listen again (while laughing hysterically) just to see if I'd heard that right! Oh...and I also headed STRAIGHT over to Eric Valentines video and posted the comment at 5:50 about console one integration...pretty cool nod to the him and the UnFairchild there!
Plugins do get sold in some communities. It's not done much, because it's a hustle and doesn't make much money. Please don't frame hardware as an economic investment like gold or stock. It costs a lot more money to run than a plugin, you need to keep it working (maintenance costs that rise a lot when some parts aren't produced anymore) and while some gain value, most don't. Please, talk about audio benefits. Yes, we all have too many plugins, no I didn't buy any plugin during black week, yes I agree one shouldn't buy so much, but no, hardware isn't smarter to aquire than plugins.
Well, I am going to go from intel to apple silicon Mac in December, and due to Waves stupid upgrade plan, my current line-up of waves plugins become unusable… so the point was very valid
@@bernburg1999 it’s sometimes valid. You can sell plugins 2nd hand, but you can also get screwed by jumping into bed with the wrong developer. The same way physical hardware can also break or require maintenance, there are variables
@@matdan2 I get your point. An out-of-service piece of hardware however keeps value, unlike software. Wytse’s point is still valid, unlike Michel’s statement above in my opinion.
Man, i dont know how many videos in row are oresentation of some products. Does not even matter in the end if somebody pay you for this, for me this channel is game over since i see some products presentations and between another youtube ads… game over

Man, i love you!
1. you are dutch.
2. you are honest
3. You don’t drag your videos out unnecessarily
Amen!
I bought Silencer based on your recommendation and am VERY happy! Thanks so much.
13:23 OH YES PLEASE!!! The ultimate HOW TO use Pro-MB
13:26 definately make a video about Pro MB split to 5 bands on the master bus! We would all appreciate this!
I second this!
+1
The way you shout at the beginning of each of your videos is very special, I imagine those who listen to you on headphones, thinking they hear a sweet mastered Jazz sound...
Excellent recommendations!
Knobcloud is a second hand plugin market place lol
Facebook is full of second hand plugin markets, and they are maintained and trusted...
Currently debating whether or not it’s safe to type Knobcloud into Google…
Only knobs on knobcloud
I came to say the same, I got Kirchoff EQ for ~$45 on there
And there’s tons of groups in fb
There are in fact tens of second hand plugins trade and sale all over social media and other places.
Console 1 MKIII is just a masterpiece...loving mine to bits...also the Fader 1...
Selling the Tegeler stuff now...
The plugs are fine...
I saw the Omnipressor on your rack! Can't wait for the review!
Thank you for that! It really motivates me to shrink down and focus more on few good plugins!
It's so true, when i started music i installed every crack copy of every plugin that ever came out, now i have a couple of legitimate eq's , compressors etc and some great vst instruments for "real" music. It focuses your mind and work flow

Can you please link to wherever we can listen to your actual productions?

Some of the best recommendations i've seen lately
Great video 🙏🏼

What’s that? You every bundle from every major plugin maker?
@charlychalton7743 not really, it all started with wanting to have every possible VSTi, in case I needed a tambourine, Hurdy Gurdy or Kazoo. my mixing snd mastering plugins look reasonable but those other ones, man
Plug-in hoarding is a serious condition!

You can have 2 separate Pro-Q eq's if you want because of the 2 eq sections...
Owner of the Alpha compressor here: put it on top of your list. While the Brainworx plugin does sound great, the hardware BLOWS it away!
add: when in M/S mode, you also might want to disable the "link" button. That'll open up a new world for you. Anyway, if you're ever in the neighborhood of Mol, Belgium, shoot me a DM over Instagram and feel free to come by to hear it yourself.

@White Sea Studio If you were't clipping with hardware what would you clip with ?
You definitely can resell plugin licenses, depending on the company. Some make it harder than it needs to be though.
Thanks!
With SSL 360 Link you could use the Unfairchild NOW.
I use U&AD and console 1 and these are mostly what I use. I have tried lots of other plugins but can mostly get by with a few utility plugins and some free and cheap Izotope plugins. 🤗

So don't you use the stereo spectral graphic thing anymore??!!
great video !!
Do a video on Sonic Academy’s ‘Kick 3’
Kotelnikov, Molotok, apulsoft ashaper, fabfilter suite, airwindows consolidated.
I always go back to the alpha compressor on the master buss
Knobcloud but it's true that the value of your plugins don't weigh much once you resale it
Pro MB video, please!
There are groups on Facebook reselling plugs 😅
wow, the sponsorship list is really looong!

Auto gain is the thing... The next thing will be even the option to have auto gain in "db" or "lufs"... 😎
So tiring, all these mighty revelations 😮😮😮
Comment for da algorithm

Sorry man, I love you but we can not stop hoarding. Tried but NOT possible.
I miss my Waves plug-ins 😢
