Exactly one year ago I've also been in Jaffna. Very friendly people, good (spicy) food and surprisingly many ice-parlors. (I tried it, it is good, No problems after eating.) The city reminds me a lot of Sri Lanka 30 years ago, when I've been there for the first time. Luckily the city is recovering, to make it more interesting for tourists. BTW: My guest-house, close to the station, was much better. When I arrived from Anuraddapura i was a bit ill, and I was lucky to have a clean and good place to recover. And 100 $ for the tree house is a rip off. You can get a decent room for a tenner, and a good room for about 30 $.
The reason the shower smells of rotten egg is due to the extremely high sulfur content in the water. Theoretically it’s “safe(ish)” to shower in. The sulfur isn’t the problem.

Min 14 You are talking about that smelly shower, let me tell You, in most of the cases that happens, when the waterbarrier n the drain evaporated, so the air from the sewage system is blowing into your room directly.. Because the water wasnt turned on for too long. In hot countries that happens quite fast, so next time just keep the water running and open the windows. If you come back an hour later, all is fine in most cases. Greetings from Germany
The closing tree house looks fun, better in a hot climate than cold, thanks for the reminder never to book. Hope you always run the water in showers before going near - to clear any stagnant water in the pipes ... this is one way to avoid legionnaire's disease.

Ben, here are some tips regarding the bus rides in Sri Lanka: - First rows are indeed reserved for monks, but you can sit there, you just need to give this seat if some monk gets in the bus - All of the buses don't have a fixed schedule as bus can stop at any place for a passenger request, so there is no way they can maintain a schedule. So at the bus terminals you just get in and wait for more people to come and when it's about half full they start going. This is also why you cannot predict how long the ride will take. 100 KM can be as long as 3-4 hours depending on how many stops the bus will take. - You don't pay at the station, you just get in and wait for a guy that collects the money to come some time during the trip. They can also always give you good tips on your transfer to the next city
