- Lip-syncing exposure and media backlash, 1989-1991
Beth McCarthy-Miller, then an executive with MTV, says the duo's English language skills, when they came in for their first interview with the channel, stirred doubts among those present as to whether they had sung on their records.[18] The first public sign that the group was lip-syncing came on 21 July 1989, during a live performance on MTV at the Lake Compounce theme park in Bristol, Connecticut. As they performed, a hard drive issue caused the recording of the song "Girl You Know It's True" to jam and skip, repeatedly playing the partial line "Girl, you know it's..." through the speakers. "I knew right then and there, it was the beginning of the end for Milli Vanilli," recalled Pilatus of the incident. "When my voice got stuck in the computer, and it just kept repeating and repeating, I panicked. I didn't know what to do. I just ran off the stage."
Downtown Julie Brown ran after Pilatus and convinced him to finish the set. "With a bit of pushing and screaming, and a couple of F-words I think as well, I got them back out there," Brown explained on VH1's Behind the Music. Despite the mishap, the concert audience seemed neither to care, nor even to notice, and the concert continued as if nothing unusual had happened.
In a March 1990 issue of Time magazine, Pilatus was quoted proclaiming himself to be "the new Elvis", reasoning that by the duo's success they were more talented musically than Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney and Mick Jagger. This was denied by Fab Morvan, as recently as 2017, saying that Pilatus never used those words and that the quote was taken out of context, likely due to Pilatus still not having a full grasp of the English language.
Unlike the international release of All or Nothing, the inserts for the American version of the album explicitly attributed the vocals to Morvan and Pilatus. This prompted singer Charles Shaw to reveal in December 1989 that he was one of the three actual vocalists on the album and that Pilatus and Morvan were impostors. Farian reportedly paid Shaw $150,000 to retract his statements, though this did not stem the tide of public criticism.
On the 21 April 1990 episode of In Living Color, Keenan Ivory Wayans and Damon Wayans parodied Milli Vanilli in a sketch, mocking the duo's accents, fashion sense, and dance moves. This led to further jokes on the duo, such as David Letterman's top-10 list describing 10 jobs they could do other than music.
Because of growing public questions as to who sang in the group, as well as Morvan and Pilatus' demand to Farian that they be allowed to sing on the next album, on 14 November 1990, Farian announced that he had fired them and confessed they did not sing on the records.
Confronted by Los Angeles Times reporter Chuck Philips, Pilatus confirmed the deception. "It’s True: Milli Vanilli Didn’t Sing" read the newspaper's headline. "I feel like a mosquito being squeezed," Pilatus said. "The last two years of our lives have been a total nightmare. We've had to lie to everybody. We are true singers, but that maniac Frank Farian would never allow us to express ourselves."
The next week, the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences revoked Milli Vanilli's 1990 Grammy for Best New Artist. Pilatus and Morvan gave a press conference for more than 100 journalists in Los Angeles where they stated their willingness to return their Grammy Award. The duo said they had "made a deal with the devil," and they sang and rapped for the room in order to prove that, although they hadn't sung on their records, they could, in fact, sing.
After these details emerged, lawsuits were filed under various U.S. consumer fraud protection laws against Arista Records, Pilatus and Morvan. One such filing occurred on 22 November 1990, in Ohio, where lawyers filed a class-action lawsuit asking for refunds on behalf of a local woman in Cuyahoga County who had bought Girl You Know It's True. When the suit was filed, it was estimated at least 1,000 Ohio residents had bought the album. On 12 August 1991, a proposed settlement of a refund lawsuit in Chicago, Illinois, was rejected. This settlement would have refunded buyers of Milli Vanilli CDs, cassettes, records and singles. However, the refunds would only be given as credits for future Arista releases.
On 28 August, a new settlement was approved; it refunded those who attended concerts as well as those who bought Milli Vanilli recordings. An estimated 10 million buyers were eligible to claim a refund, and they could keep the refunded recordings. The refund deadline passed on 8 March 1992.
Adding to the controversy, in December 1990 singer-songwriter David Clayton-Thomas sued Milli Vanilli for copyright infringement, alleging that the title song of All or Nothing used the melody from his 1968 composition "Spinning Wheel", a hit for his group Blood, Sweat & Tears.

Why’d they demonize you if all you do is repost official news reports with no commentary ?
Fab's story is consistent AF! Frank, you messed up these boys' lives!
Even years after this press conference his story has remained consistent.
I always felt sorry for these guys ...they were manipulated heavily by Frank Farian!!
Exactly!!!!
I'm usually not much on sympathy for stuff like this, but I am EMBARRASSED for these guys and what was done to them.
Once their first hit aired they were SCREWED. How could they ever go back? They had no representation? Wtf was that about????
This press conference is a total shit show too. It wasn't set up by a friend of theirs I bet. There were press there just to accuse and yell at them also. It's Bullshit.
I cannot stand Frank. A life was lost because of him. RIP Rob.
@@ericanicolebartonexactly. So sad. Frank Farion even had the nerve to show his face at Rob's funeral to give his condolences.
@@moniquegross2106 I saw that. He's ruthless and will pay the price one day for what he did.
You can see how sincere rob and fab were. The media are such jerks
I know right 😢 I hate this happened to them. I wish they had a redemption story 😔
Verídico
There's no Milli Vanilli without Fab and Rob! I still love them!
Seriously man who cares
@@ChuckTay23 you do hence why you're here commenting.
I would agree with you but I can't ... it'll be disrespectful to the Rocco sisters, Brad Howell, and Jon Davies (RIP). Them together with Rob and Fab made Milli Vanilli.
Me too!
@@kelechiasika9429 but no one wanted to see them
For english being Rob Pilatus second language, he spoke in their defense very well. This interview showed how some people really don’t have a heart & celebrities are human beings before being famous. Their story is just heartbreaking 😢 RIP Rob. God has given Fab so much strength & clarity 🙏🏽 I’m glad that he’s doing very well today.
Their label Arista Record American representative should be there not only from the Germany record part. But none from America questioned them. Its hard to see Rob & Fab that barely spoke English have to do the defense and Clive Davis Arista Record just escaped until now.
these poor guys got thrown under the bus by their producer
And left out to dry, Frank had no damn care in the world,Rob and Fab 🎩🎤they are not peices of trash that you can throw away.these 2 guys have feelings and a💞and a soul just like the next person.why would Farian 😠 do this to them.they have dreams just like the next person.♥️💜
Well only because they didn't want to continue with the lie
He is a cold greedy German. He has been doing it for years. He made alot more money from Boney M. And got away with it.
I wish Rob could see these comments. Loved him and Fab. I could care less that they did not actually sing the songs. They were great performers and I loved watching them!
Well said! Agree totally
Same here
Clive Davis.."say no more".. the devil's right hand man...
It’s so crazy that this Milli Vanilli “scandal” demonized them. They were these fly exotic black men with great physique & stage presence.
The singing coach was speaking facts.
They got the best to work for them. Seth Riggs was also Michael Jackson's vocal coach!
They were not that bad. Lots of artist sound totally different live nowadays. Sadly, no one give them a second chance.
this still happens in the music industry.
It always has.
Just tweeked way better now.....✌️
It’s encouraged now
BRITTANY SPEARS FOR A FACT!
Even in today's way before MTV first came out.
Thank you so much for posting. I have never seen this whole conference before. Absolutely fascinating.
I am sorry to say this, but Rob and Fab will always be Milli Vanilli. Do not undermine their hard work. It may not be their vocals, but its definitely their hard work that popularized Girl You Know its True, Blame it on the Rain, Girl I'm gonna miss you. Elvis became a superstar not because of his vocals but because of his image. His choreography, charisma, fashion sense, and hairstyle. All of these sold his music.
Also add to these, the Duo already recorded an album before they became Milli Vanilli. So yes, they definitely could perform. The only problem was that at the time, they barely spoke any American English, and they had thick European accents. What any talent scout worth his salt should have done was to invest in speech and voice coaching for the raw talent.
Their looks and great stage presence, sold his music
I remember looking at them backflipping while singing on stage.. 🤣
lol
They be like girl you know flip
The Music industry is the evil place🥺
It's all ABOUT MONEY. If you are weak and go into it naive. You will get chewed up.
“Girl you know it’s true”, “blame it on the rain”, “all or nothing”, “Girl I’m gonna miss you” These guys had hits!
And they were all very good songs even though they did not sing on the record.😊
I am so proud of Rob and Fab! These 2 brave guys came out to the world and spoke the HONEST TRUTH about how and why they were scammed/jacked by some corrupt music producers... Even despite all of the threats and lawsuits they have received. You really gotta give 'em a great amount of respect and credit just for being so brave and honest like that! These men can not only sing and dance EXTREMELY WELL, but they truly represent just how COOL and SEXY late 80s/early 90s musicians should be like. You can no longer see anybody like them on the streets anymore. The way they dressed, the way they talked, and their gentlemen-like, polite European mannerisms (even the way they moved) are just on a whole other entire different level compared to today's modern-day FAILURES and DISASTERS. I know it is important to first learn how to love yourself, before learning how to love others; but FUCK today's people and FUCK their style of music in general!
I'm with you on everything u said.100percent.
That’s the thing that baffled me the most. Those 2 blokes could actually sing!! Sing very well!! So Farian didn’t need to do all that crap. He could have had them singing and everyone would have had a long career. No he wouldn’t do that though because he wanted all the money for himself and the record company. If there’s something I hate as much as bad manners and rudeness it’s greed. Pure, unadulterated greed.
Omg! That's exactly how I feel.
Nah.. they had no choice..
I'm going to think that the secret would have been kept on had the record never skipped...
Damn I don't know how anyone would of deal with that the fans was harsh
Thanks for sharing this interview, very interesting loved these two guys rip Rob. They were beutiful inside and out, still listen to milli vanilli 2022.
What Milli Vanilli did was and is nothing special in the music industry.
But they weren't obedient anymore. So they threw them under the bus and destroyed them completely.
RIP Robert!
Exactly.
It's just sad cuz in terms of fashion sense and sexiness, modern guys have got NOTHING on these 2 ultra-cool dudes...
Rob is a genuine guy, they were played by greedy people. Music industry is cruel😢😢😢
He might have been a genuine guy, but his voice was still horrible in comparison to the studio vocalist 😅
Let's just keep it real ? I really wish their producers would have been honest from the beginning "rob & fab" will be the face of the Group and the others will be the actual vocalist .
I just want to add to comments. The first one is that press conference is most like a spanish corrida, and the second one is that maybe Fab sings better than Rob, but Rob had everything for be an artist, you can't stop staring at him from the moment he showed up on stage, he had charisma.
Rob and his beautiful eyes, the moves, the whole package...indeed he had charisma. Loved to watch him♡
The media and the music business reacted the way they did because they were scared. Rob & Fab had gone rogue, that was the worst nightmare for someone like Clive Davis. Do you really think he wouldn't call in every favor imaginable to make sure when the shit hits the fan, that it lands on Rob & Fab? The industry was scared, because they all knew something like this could have happened to any of them. Nothing changed after Milli Vanilli except the confidentiality agreements probably. The way those guys were treated is shameful, and they were the real victims in the whole thing.
Rest In Peace rob.
I love Milli Vanilli
This is the worst story. Two talented, absolutely gorgeous, young men with a dream met a snake. Frank used, abused, made millions off of them then threw them under the bus. They signed a contract written in German. Fab doesn't speak English. Both barely spoke English. While signing that contract neither had legal representation. After they signed the contract then Frank the snake told them they would not be allowed to sing. This cost a precious life (Rob). Frank should have been held accountable. Instead he walked away rich. I am glad to see Fab move on with his life. RIP Rob. I listened to the music of Milli Vanilli back in the day and I still listen to it in 2023. Will always love them.❤
That's True🙏🏼Thanks for your warm Words. MILLI VANILLI for ever🔥🕺🏾🎶❣Movie: 21. December 2023🔥❣🙏🏼🎶👈🏻

R.I.P. Rob🙏🏼❤🔥
Typical creep .
Rob never could quite get rid of his German thick accent.
At the time of his death he was making good progress in doing so.
If he had lived and continued working with voice coaching and linguist he would have been great.
Fab made better progress in that area.
Robs death was so unfortunate.
Pobre Rob, el fue el que llevó a carga toda la presión, en todas las entrevistas él fue el que habló, Fab de muy pocas palabras, creo que por esa misma presión acabó como terminó en ese hotel!!!! Extraño mucho a MILLI VANILLI… Ojalá poder regresar el tiempo y volver a escucharlos..
El productor debería estar preso !! 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
FALSOS....

BASURA..
Do you belive Rob killed himself? I don t. I think Frank s fingers are involved.
@@hadasaesthera3061 I agree. Rob was murdered. I think he knew too much!
This is the first time I see the press conference in its entirety. With all due respect to the vocal coach, I'm not so sure Rob & Fab could have really sung those songs. As far as I'm concerned, Fab sounds good these days, but back then he had an accent when he sang. That's the thing. You can have a great vocal sound and hit the right notes, but if you have an accent, it doesn't really sound good to make an rnb/hip hop album that should appeal to an American audience. His english sounded better on the Rob & Fab album though. For my taste, Rob's vocal sound didn't really sound good. He could have sung backings, which he eventually did, but otherwise he wouldn't have been a good lead singer.
It was so unfair how they were treated. Yes, Rob & Fab made mistakes, but there were a lot of people behind the scenes who also cashed in, but were able to walk away. It's ludicrous to think that these two guys orchestrated the whole thing. Everyone involved with Milli Vanilli knew what they were getting into.
I agree with everything you said. Their performance on the Arsenio Hall Show proves your point. Fab was a much better lead vocalist and had a much more flexible accent than Rob. The only song Rob sang lead well on was the unreleased "Don't Give Up The Fight". But Fab overall was the better singer because he had the right voice for their kind of music (the Rob & Fab album, not Milli Vanilli) as well as a better accent. It had improved by 1992-3.
Yeah, there is no comparison between their voices and the actual singers behind the songs. Frank Farian was a smart man. Not a good or honest man, but a smart one.
@@daughterofolaf, Frank Farian is a good musician and a marketing genius. And when he used the great looking dancers who eventually would perform Boney M's songs, it wasn't a secret that not all members of the band actually sang. Back then the fans didn't care, and Boney M. eventually acquired a few very talented singers, and Boney M. had a string of great hits. But the two guys who publicly represented Milli Vanilli, were badly railroaded by Farian because they initially didn't know that they would never sing and just move their lips. However, I think that they weren't great singers. That's why they were never successful with their own stuff. If they had turned out to be great singers, Farian would've probably allowed them to sing, since that would've been a lot easier for all people who were involved in the "Milli-Vanilli" project.
@@sabineb.5616 Being fair, one of these albums only had 2,000, but it's due to the printing issues that lead to only 2,000 sold. Rob and Fab were already signed on and someone was trying to work it out to make sure they could get more CDs sold.
These guys were so transparent on how the the record company works but most were not listening. Prince at least gave a bigger attention to the system.
They weren't listening because Who Owns The News? Follow the money. This was a public witch-burning to punish their impudence.
This sheit was legendary. It was the most hilarious event in the history of music.😂 "Girl you know it's true" was a hit because of Rob & Fab/Milli Vanilli. They were two pure little lambs led to slaughter by the evil music industry. RIP Rob.🙏🏽

Reading a lot of the comments I just want to say there is a LOT of difference between lip synching to a Recording of a song YOU recorded. To Lip synching and claiming credit for someone else's recording. Lip synching isn't a good thing, but Lip synching to something you didn't even record is totally different.
