- This shows the knot I use to tie my leader to mono or braid. Its a simple and effective method. Useful for all sea fishing rigs, whether fishing from a boat or the shore.
Very useful and reassuring. I need a knot I can do at the mark, in the wind and in the dark!
This is straight forward and reassuring to know you are happy with this.
If good enough for you it’s certainly good enough for me!
I am always nervous tying shockleader to my main line but after watching your video it looks a lot easier than I first thought. Cheers John 👍👍👍
I agree with Scott I am always nervous when it comes to various knots , but this is spot on , cheers John 😁
Agree uni to uni very strong, used that knot last year, this year been using the gt knot for my ling and Pollack braid to mono leaders , so far finding it very strong and simple to do on a moving boat, both are good knots tbh.
Another brillilant video, this is like being in school and enjoying it :)
Good video, content, personality, mate.
Is there a nack to stopping braid tangling I use a cheap 8x braid from decathlon and at wits end with it the stuff just tangles and seems to snag when I flick it out for a far cast when feathering or spinning from the rocks! Not sure if I’m casting too hard or my uni knot is catching the end eye on the rod...no idea tried a few different ways but seems to always happen. Any ideas pal?
Hi there. Great clip and very informative. Would you use the same knot if using a fixed spool reel?
Do you still get good bite detection with mono onto braided line
Have you ever used tapered leaders, if so would you suggest a 6 turn knot on both sides?
Will the uni to uni knot work for skate fishing here in Oban
I’ve just tied this for the first time (uni to uni). I’ve pulled each end as hard as I can but still a bit anxious on its strength. Would you think it would be okay to put a thin layer of superglue to strengthen more or is that a no go
mattelder93 - This is the knot I tie when I’m out on the rocks or boat and I trust it. If I have the time I tie an FG or an Alberto when wrecking. Use superglue if you want. I don’t like it. But some folks do.
can you help please New to braid and am wanting to know when fishing braid for general purpose fishing say upside or down tide what length of a leader should I use to be safe wrecks reefs Should it be fluoro or mono NOT using lures Bottom fishing only type deal Being a diver and new to braid I know how sharp them barnacles are and kind of like idea of leader
How often should you change your leader..
You correctly state that this knot is probably not the strongest. The pr knot is a 100% knot, 30 wraps down, 60 wraps back , cut the trace 4mm from the braid.Make a mushroom. Wind 8 to 10 alternating half hitches up to the mushroom, a dozen alternating half hitches beyond, then finish with a rizzuto knot. I am knot making this up
And if not what knot should I use?
If it’s good enough for you, then it’s certainly good enough for me.
Thanks
Hi mate, just after some advice on what size line to use if fishing from a pier for flounder/mackerel small fish like that. Cheers.
- Spoke to you via PM didn't I?
If I have 30lbs main line and want to put on tapered shock leader that come in 16-65lbs and 13 meters long, should I put the entire 13 meter leader on or cut it down, and if I cut it down how much and what end. I would be casting a 7oz weight for long distance casting from the beach. Sorry I am all new to beach casting, many thanks.
Hi mate. Once your main line is through your rod eyes. Get your tapered line out. On all tapered lines you start with the thin line (hence tapered line) tie this to your line for me I use the albright knot 🪢 but the choice is yours. Then start winding the leader on once you start to get to the thicker line just give it 4 or 5 turns so enough goes around the spool that should be enough. Then cut off the thick part of the leader. Then attach your rig & weight. That should be sufficient. You can & some people do put all the leader on but to me thats far too much. Because all in all its what it says (shock leader) it basically acts as a spring when you cast out. Safety measure really stops your rig from cracking off. Hope this helps & tight lines 👍👍👍
@@jonathoncoates9170 why would you tie the thin end of a tapered leader to your main line? Shouldn't it be the other way round?
How long do you make a shock leader
1.5 times the length of the rod
I use a 8 turn grinner knot with the braid onto 60 - 80lb mono with 3 over hand hitch knots..... Then burn the end of the mono, then pull the grinner knot down tight. And the knot just glides through the fod guides and it's the strongest I've ever used the braid has never slipped over the blob end of the mono.
Why do you need a leader?
The idea is that this tough section of your line takes all the strain of casting and the various knocks and abrasions the line inevitably suffers.
If you had really thick line throughout, it would be heavy to cast and you couldn't fit so much on your reel. If you had thin stuff throughout, you'd risk it breaking when casting heavy weights, and it would suffer from abrasion too much.
