Where I live temperatures can exceed 35C/95F. The key to staying comfortable is becoming acclimated, a process that takes a week or more during which you need to take it easy as you get accustomed to exercising in the heat. Your body will begin sweat a lot more and you'll be surprisingly comfortable while riding, although when you stop it'll feel like you've been dropped in an oven. You lose a lot of fluids, so I sometimes carry up to 2 liters of water. It's dangerous to drink that much plain water, so I use a commercial electrolyte powder; I also carry salt pills just in case. Eating also helps keep electrolyte levels up. My general rule of thumb is that as long as you can keep yourself feeling good on the bike, you're safe. If you feel uncomfortable riding you need to back off. As cyclists we tend to push through discomfort, but if you do that with heat you're asking for heat exhaustion. You may suddenly feel the heat inexplicably disappear; that's a sign of heat stroke, which is a medical emergency.
A buff or gaiter can be soaked with water to cool off your neck, cover your mouth/nose on dusty gravel roads so you don't eat dust and can keep the sun off your neck. Also.. sunscreen? arm covers?
yep....exactly what I needed....here in Iceland...where we call summer whenever the temps rise slightly over the 8degree celsius mark...then the short sleeved jerseys and shorts come out of the closet and we forego the arm and leg warmers. Summer is here...until its gone next week....oh the fleeting temperment of the icelandic cycling seasons...
I did it again. It's the same every year, I never learn, every time I come home sunburnt on my first summer ride . Don't be like me, always remember to wear suncreen on your exposed skin.
Some of the best accessory's to have in those in-between temperatures are wind vests, thin arm warmers, and thin knee warmers. They all can be taken off and carried in your jersey pockets.
I know when I see you two in a video it’s going to be fun and entertaining 🤣 Favorite line “not my problem” - Manon to Hank while he tries to strip off his winter cycling pants
Did the 2021 Festive 500 where every day was over 40C, and the only day to get through that was starting before dawn, watching the sunrise with a coffee, and being done and indoors again before 9am at which point it was just in the low 30s. Selecting a time of day when the sun is lower on the horizon (both ends of the day) has a lower UV index, and use the middle of the day to see something new so ride there in the morning, and ride back in the afternoon. There are also good long sleeve summer jerseys that have a UPF rating that'll stop the sunburn (e.g., Bellweather Sol-Air).
Watching Manon and Hank talk about warm weather while in England makes this Aussie laugh so hard. Should be titled "how to dress over the only 4 warm days a year"
I just kept wondering, if this is summer, does the UK even have a summer??? Why are they talking about overshoes, base layers, gilets? It makes sense though that they didn't mention sunblock or long sleeves, it explains why the English are known worldwide for turning briefly pink and then red when exposed to sunlight.
@@picasticks there are tons of articles appearing about the "heat", and what to do about it, when the temperature goes over 20 °C. For a few hours in a day, if you're sitting in the sun. It's ridiculous. If you have 25 °C during the summer months in Hungary, it's considered to be a cool down. Summer temperature is 30-40 °C. I'm always laughing at them when they talk about how hot 20 °C is.
I have the Giro Aerohead hank was wearing, and its actually quite well ventilated. It also blocks far more of the sun, keeping you cooler (and not sunburning your face and scalp)
I was surprised that there was no mention of the additional heat a rider absorbs when wearing an all black kit. Years back at the TDF Team Cervelo which had primarily black kit, switched out to primarily white kit to reduce heat build up.
and if you ride in semi-desert areas like there are in the center of Spain or the south of Ukraine (where I am from) you`d even want to have a thin lightweight neck gaiter to prevent severe sunburns.
In the UK, "Hot" is a relative term....Where I live, Hot means 29 to 32 C. Warm means 20 to 28 C. Cool means 13 to 19 C, and cold means 5 to 12 C. Very cold means -4 to 4 C (but I don't do that anymore)
I dont think yall know what hot is! In Texas its all about sunscreen, but I like a good sports sunscreen around spf30 so u still sweat and it goes on easily. I would say you have the kit correct, although I forego a baselayer if its over 90F, its so humid in east Texas nothing evaporates anyway...
In Kenya the weather can be unpredictable at times. Cold in the mornings and very hot from 10am . Base is always a must for me based on the weather. Thanks
And now a video on how to protect yourself from the sun. I prefer to have as much of the body covered up as possible and just take it easy. Sunscreen is nice, but on long rides it's not really effective imho and sweat tends to lower the protection even more.
On jersey colour: There is a scientific concept called Albedo, which is all about how much heat different colours can absorb. It is on a scale out of 1. The closer to 1, the more the colour can reflect sunlight and vice-versa. Black has been show to have an Albedo of close to zero, while white on the other hand, has an Albedo of about 0.9. The brighter the colour, the higher the Albedo, so 10/10 I'd go for a brighter jersey in the heat. Also better for road safety.
And THIS this is WHY I ride way below what I know I can do on hot summer days. Way below. I've fallen out once before and it was not fun -- had very little to do with the kit. Good advice, though. Very good advice.
Summer is my worst enemy for cycling. For example I went to the Gran Fondo Nove Colli last weekend, from 6am to 11am the temperature was great so the first 100km I did manage my tempo and body temperature, the hell came around 12pm when the temperatures reached around 34-36c, had to slown down or I might faint due to the high temperatures (and humidity too). My hydration was on point and thank god I found some fountains during the race to take quick showers, sadly I lost a lot of time but better that than dying somewhere.
These people should come to Houston, Texas to ride. Shorts 11 out of 12 months, sleeveless jerseys May through September, full finger gloves occasionally in December and January.
The black kit looks sleek, but not a good color choice for hot weather and doesn’t exactly aid visibility either. Red actually absorbs the least heat from the sun of any color except white. So says science, anyway.
Summertime hot is as relative as wintertime cold. By the time June rolls around, my early morning rides will start at 90F/32C, so even a mesh base layer is going to be too much. The key is hydration. All day every day, not just on your ride.
Here in SoCal we can start out a ride and it is in the mid 40 deg. F. One hour later it is climbing into the 70s and by mid ride it could be over 90. How about a follow-up video on how to take off and stow the extra clothing. Manon and Hank would provide entertaining humor on that one.
Watching this even though I live in Canada so I never have to worry about it being too warm. However if I ever end up in a more civilized area this might come in handy

You're missing essential advice here, maybe the sun isn't yet that scorching in the UK but for those that live in regions where the sun can do more harm making sure your clothing is UPF50+ lets you avoid getting sunburnt. Also sunscreen doesn't always allow you to cool down as efficiently because it's blocking sweat, so I actually like wearing arm warmers that are made for summer conditions instead. It will also prevent all sorts of insects that can get stuck in the vents of your helmet from biting you, and avoid sweat from getting in your eyes. Oh and wear sunscreen even if you have nice tan lines. Also you want a light wind vest that you can fold in your backpocket for the descents if you go to the mountain, temperature drops rapidly when you're descending and you can get sick quickly especially if you're wet from going uphill for a long time.
LOL! Chicken in a Bag! I usually look like a freshly packed sausage! Gotta drop that Covid 20... for the people that didn't land anyone on the moon, 9kg.
Wool is exactly what you want in warm weather. It is way more comfy than any other fabric, and as a bonus it doesn't smell. Why do everyone think that wool = warm?
It's all good, unless it gets like 32-35°C. At that temperature you're hot even in the thinnest clothes. Unfortunately, this temperature is normal in summer in my region.
They are still wearing 2 top layers in summer 😂. The UK really is a thing. I cycle with an open shirt and very short shorts in the summer and still get really hot here in Spain.
Lots and lots of water. I need to add a water filter to my saddle bag as there are very few places I can get access to water on my country side rides. Been a few times I’ve been desperate enough to knock on a few doors asking for water. Didn’t feel I could the last couple years with Covid.
You are both wearing black, which is the very worst color choice possible, since it absorbs heat. No one wears black in the desert. Fashion has a "high" temperature price! :)
I'm team Hank. I'll change gloves and remove arm warmers in motion. I really thought he coulda pulled that off. Wish Manon had given him a lil ally yoop.
What are your top tips for staying cool in hot weather?

Also you want a light wind vest that you can fold in your backpocket for the descents if you go to the mountain, temperature drops rapidly when you're descending and you can get sick quickly especially if you're wet from going uphill for a long time.
In Florida, the base layer is the only layer...and that is normally too much.🥵
Can all aero helmets do that?
should have kept filming until hank had to fall into the hedge taking his longs off on the bike! top videos, very entertaining guys 🤣

Don't want to have a Jai Hindley at the 2020 Giro moment!
Why do everyone think that wool = warm?
pro tip white clothes and helmet to reflect the uv light

As a Clydesdale MAMIL who can't tan, they usually tell me, "Zip it up, to keep the crowd from throwing up!"
Why not having a small wet cap under your helmet
It's all good, unless it gets like 32-35°C. At that temperature you're hot even in the thinnest clothes. Unfortunately, this temperature is normal in summer in my region.
They are still wearing 2 top layers in summer 😂. The UK really is a thing. I cycle with an open shirt and very short shorts in the summer and still get really hot here in Spain.
How to dress for cycling in hot weather... black attire it is, then.😄
Tips on how to stay cool in hot days - meanwhile they drop a black color based kit 😂
Where can I get the Aero kit?
I’d like to know where Hank left his winter kit, that’s a lot of money on the ground
He could have at least drawn a treasure map to help find it

Beer, plenty of beer.
I always wear long sleeves to protect my arms from the pitiless sunshine . . . and save money on sunblock. 🙂
Lots and lots of water. I need to add a water filter to my saddle bag as there are very few places I can get access to water on my country side rides. Been a few times I’ve been desperate enough to knock on a few doors asking for water. Didn’t feel I could the last couple years with Covid.
Very important to stay hydrated and wear sunscreen too!
You are both wearing black, which is the very worst color choice possible, since it absorbs heat. No one wears black in the desert.
Fashion has a "high" temperature price! :)
If anyone were to Actually were all of that in the summer... ....should they really be on a bike?
I'm team Hank. I'll change gloves and remove arm warmers in motion. I really thought he coulda pulled that off. Wish Manon had given him a lil ally yoop.
We can't encourage him too much
