    Sunscreen ☀️ ✋
    An interview with a dermatologist about the what, where and why of sunscreen for cycling (and how to spot melanoma). 🦀
    Headbands like Halo and Gutr that divert sweat from the eyes. 😓= 😵
    Arm coolers, good UV protection but do they cool? (And around your neck?)
    Socks, ankle cut, polypropylene, merino...?
    Think you have the making of a whole summer cycling kit series.

    When I ride, I find just a lightweight short jersey is fine in most temperatures, with no base layer. I must just be one of those people that gets hotter.

    If you live in an area that is around 30-33 deg C with 90-95% humidity all-year-round, don't wear a baselayer. You will overheat badly. No material wicks well when you have that kind of humidity. Even hard shell jackets are useless. Don't carry one when you encounter tropical downpours. Again, with that kind of humidity, there is no vapour pressure to "breathe". You are already drenched in your sweat, which is no different from being drenched from the rain. Consider the humidity as a factor.

      Blowing out!?! Are you sure you're not pulling my leg mrsparkyaprilia? Contact lenses do not blow out. They're stuck pretty well to your eyeball. Maybe the old hard ones from 20 years ago came out easier but modern lenses are fine for cycling plenty

    7.10, It's unlikely that you'll go from 23/24deg to 10......😲,
    This happens very easily in the lakes, doesn't it Ollie! 😃.
    Few years ago set off from town with Blue sky and 23c. 1 hr later, the worst rain and wind where you couldn't ride.... That was up Red Pike though....... 🙄😲

    I don't get the point of summer base layers. Without one, when I get hot, my body sweats, and the wind quickly cools me down by evaporation. When I get to the cooler conditions, my skin dries and I'm comparatively warmer. If I have a base layer, it wicks the sweat and prevents it from cooling the body right away, and when I get in a cooler place it stays damp, prolonging the cooling when it's no longer desired. For me the summer base layer is just some extra warmth when I'm picking the short sleeve jersey over a fleeced long-sleeve one in marginal conditions.

    Base layers are useless, especially in short sleeve weather, they're nothing more than a new marketing gimmick to make people spend more money on cycling kit.

    • @derekbiggerstaff
      @derekbiggerstaff 6 років тому

      They're not useless in an "off". I crashed at speed once and slid along the road on my back. The back of my shirt simply disintegrated exposing the entire rear of my HH base layer, which stood up to the friction with surprisingly little damage. I don't think my skin would have.

      Oh well, fair enough, since it's been about 8 years since the last time I've fallen off my bike I didn't think about that being an issue. Plus in case of a fall I'd be far more concerned about broken (collar)bones and head trauma than road rashes.
