Scientology E-meter Debunked.

  • As a teenager I became involved with Scientology thinking it was going to raise my IQ, help me overcome my problems, and eventually turn me into some kind of super human. The thing which use to impress me the most in Scientology was their E-meter, which I once believed had the ability to probe deeply into the human psyche, and help people discover their subconscious mental blocks. After working for Scientology as a staff member, I was able to see some of the super humans up close, and what I observed were were many troubled people that thought they were on a path to advanced spirituality, but from my prospective it appeared they were loosing touch with reality.

On the surface you are 100% correct. But there are also hidden uses for the E meter only the top tier members know about.
I liken Scientology to the Freemasons. There are the porch masons who are well meaning but clueless. The main body of masons who are mostly well meaning who know a bit more but are clueless about what the top tier is even all about and what they do. Maybe its for the best but I just think that any organization that tries to take over our government should be transparent and democratic.

I wonder who is brainwashed here? Someone told you that scientology brainwashes, torutres and blackmails people, and you've accepted that to be true. I studied scientology many years ago, and was never blackmailed, or tortured. I'll hold back on the 'brainwashing' from the point of view that all of society is brainwashed anyway. All scientology does, is un-brainwash them. Hence the reason they are considered dangerous.

Well said. I saw scientologists once recruiting in Italy, with a large meter in a wooden case, like used to be used for demonstrations in school physics laboratories. My reaction was "But it's just a galvanometer !" And that is all it is.

    • @david203
      @david203 3 роки тому +2

A galvanometer measures small electric currents. An ohmmeter measures electric resistance. Two different measurements. They are related by Ohm's Law. Skin resistance use to be called Galvanic Skin Response (GSR), which was an error, as the skin doesn't generate measurable electric currents other than what might leak out to the surface from larger nerves, representing at most muscle tone and function.

When I audit people, I use a different device: I have the preclear person insert a brass key into an electrical outlet. If the preclear person is physically capable of walking out of the counseling session, then he/she is 'cleared." For this service, only a contribution is requested - generally $500 for the first counseling session.

A licensed electrician? Not an electronics engineer then? That's a shame because you won't really understand the circuitry involved. The person in this video doesn't know much more than you either, and if he really has to criticise the e-meter, he could at least get an understanding of it first.
It's not an ohm meter, it's a specially designed gsr meter (look it up). The fact that you can take a crude reading of a persons skin resistance on an ohm meter simply means your meter is working. A gsr meter is able to display tiny changes in that resistance, and when a person is caused to focus on a subject while hooked up to one, changes will be detected any time a topic afects that person. The skill of using any meter is in understanding it. The person in this video clearly doesn't.

It's based on the simple wheatstone bridge circuit. I was an ET in the Navy. I was in Scientology a long time ago, and yes, it's basically an Ohm meter with a sensitivity adjustment knob ( called the "tone arm" in scientology-speak ).

You didn't expose a con, you conned people into believing you knew what you were talking about. If you're going to criticise scientology, then it would be realy helpful to demonstrate a full understanding first. What you're saying is that in YOUR opinion, this is what an e-meter is and does, but then you go on to say things that do not relate to why a scientologist uses an e-meter, or how they use it, and you come up with YOUR idea of what it actually is, with YOUR ideas of what it can't do. If YOUR thoughts on it are right, then how come a gsr meter (which is more accurateky what an e-meter IS) is used in the medical field to help with client counselling? The only con here is you.

It is wrong when he says that a polygraph measures, “thought”. Polygraphs DO NOT MEASURE BRAIN WAVES like this UA-cam poster has stated. (An EEG measures brain waves).
A polygraph ONLY measures wether or not the subject, MIGHT be lying to the examiner. Studies were done over years that measured the physiological changes in a person’s body when they lie and when they tell the truth for baseline comparisons. But MANY things can mimic these same changes - as if someone is lying during a polygraph. If a person has just gone through a trauma, they are sick, under undue stress, are under the influence of drugs, if they naturally incessantly sweat as a normal condition or if the subject of the polygraph is using counter measures to foil the exam, or if their exhibited baseline when they tell the truth is almost indistinguishable from when they lie, or the experience of the examiner. These are only SOME of the problems with even polygraphs. And my all time favorite people that can continually foil polygraphs - sociopaths that can stay cool as a cucumber when they lie and exhibit polygraph readings just like they do when they are telling the truth.

An e-meter is not strictly meant as a lie detector. I know a Scientologist who has been auditing all his life, and knows his electronics. He made a device with electrodes on the head that does measure brainwaves. But while that device gave all kinds of interesting information, he couldn't use that information in auditing, so he went back to using a traditional e-meter again.

Were you involved in the actual "church" of Scientology or just reading books?
I like the points you have made here. I think the cost is the primary issue I have with e-meters. That being said there are "Free Zone" scientologists which don't agree with the corporate David Miscavige/Tom Cruise version of Scientology and they release e-meter schematics online and offer ones for purchase that are significantly cheaper (and in my opinion better looking).
I think it is also quite impractical. What if a Scientologist loses their hands in an accident, or gets very bad burns? Wouldn't that change the skin response in some way? It seems that the cans are a standard size and material, but wouldn't different sizes or the cans at different distances cause some kind of capacitance, effecting the reading?
That being said i think that they believe all the thetan/thoughts having "mass" stuff quite literally which is pretty dangerous. I believe they have already, for legal reasons, needed to state that the e-meter is a religious artifact because at one time they claimed it had demonstrable medical benefits. I think it is alright if they are aware that it is fake and are suspending their disbelief for an auditing session. For example, in Christianity the idea that the Eucharist is literally turning into the body of Christ was created before the enlightenment era notion of "absolute" (ie scientific) truth. I think Scientologists have a right to believe whatever they want for their religious practices, but not to say that thoughts having mass, etc is somehow scientifically proven by the e-meter.

There was an article in the Clearwater Sun (shut down by the Clearwater police on orders of their employer, the church of scientologists for running articles criticizing Scientology) in the early 80's about a Vietnam vet who who had lost both arms in combat. He had been invited in by his daughter who was a member. She had been told that she had to either recruit her Dad or disconnect from him. So she brought him in and they turned him away since there was no way to audit him. She then was ordered to disconnect from her Dad who they claimed rejected Scientology by refusing to have hands. She left the church and then told her story to the Sun. After the article was published she and her father had to go into hiding as they were hounded by the church's goon squad.

The " E-meter " active mode of operation is what's called a Weston bridge , galvanometer , BUT with a hi gain op amp circuit , so they send .005 milavolts balance the gain so you get a Null ( zero ) then very slight changes in conductivity , will swing the needle , the trick is , the circuit has what known as nonlinear gain , making it self oscillate , due to the built in instability in the gain circuit . so any minor changes are greatly exaggerated , ( the needle moves ) it is a hyper sensitive galvanometer , and designed to be very unstable . after it is carefully balanced , for that persons electrical conductivity , I have a schematic of all 11 versions , but they all utilize a hi gain op amp ( not shielded ) , and all the big iron cores , ( inductors ) are used to prevent stray currents inside the device form oscillating ( self triggering . religious technology , what a load of shit .

So put on it, I went through the test and was amazed how they knew exactly what I failed to that particular morning!
So this guy may have a wrong idea of how it ACTUALLY works!
2 people are trained as highly skilled operators, who know EXACTLY how to read the e-meter. Me,or any untrained person studying the policies has no idea, even if we read the manual!
They as skilled operators know how to read the meter and what it's is saying! Is it pure luck or by chance that they guessed exactly as Ray suggested "the problem might be...?" what Ray assumed, because he suggested it as the possible cause of my lack of focus?
Yes... maybe... maybe not... as they were operators relying on exactly what the e-meter was going to tell them to verify my failure , as evident!
It was said to be like the standard e-meter. but better as you can fool the police version, but the e-meter it's impossible!
As a staff member under a 5-year contract I got tested free, as got all courses free! I left when a Staff member told a student she smoked weed which is a no-no in Ron's books/policies...and the stupid student told on our staff officer,to , the course teacher, who asked her if she was high, and she told her the no-no policy as a member of 'Staff-in-training"! So the student said "nothing wrong with weed!" and at a meeting was told Staff leader was kicked out and would have to pay (15 years of free courses back, each ranging from $50-$100 to 3000 or more) - So I thought best to out before I get kicked out and landed a million dollar debt! I got hit with a $NZ1000$ or more bill but eventually paid some off and it was finally made null after 2 payments and I was reinstated as a "friend of Scientology" not a "recorded enemy" !

Ask the right questions, listen carefully to the answers (the "hits" and "misses") and watch the body language and it's amazing how much information someone can volunteer without realizing they're doing it. The e-meter is just a prob, a placebo, to make you think they have a real "scientific" method for doing this instead of an age old scam.

Scientology is founded on the premise that for the price of fairly nice sized luxury yacht, you can achieve spiritual salvation. It begs the question that if nature offers spiritual salvation as our natural heritage, which is the most logical prospect, why must it cost money? How could be possible that out of millions of planets with life on them, the only one that has an opportunity for spiritual salvation is this planet, but only if you happen to be rich. I don't think nature planned for spiritual salvation of sentient beings, no matter which planet the reside on, in this fashion.

Yeah but the thing is is I actually tried it and I had them turn the meter towards me and while holding the cans, based on how much processing I put into a thought, the meters arrow would move more slowly, and to the fullest extent of my capable ability to think, the meter even stops when I have reached such a thought threshold. I think auditing would work but for most people because it forces you to put yourself in meditation and have a trusted instructor to help you cycle through negative experiences. And they have a way at working underneath the surface of problems to get to the deepest parts. But it’s all based on meditation and how suggestible you are.
I’m not very suggestible so I was very frustrating for them to deal with. I figured out how to manipulate the cans very fast. But it had nothing to do with how they were squeezed. It really did measure thought capacity or thought intensity of some kind.

It really didn't. There's nothing in those devices that can possibly do that. They have been examined part by part and they're just slightly more sophisticated ohmmeters as suggested in the video. Like it or not, everyone is open to suggestion at some level and an expert "auditor" is going to be able to fool you in the same way that an expert medium can make even skeptical people second-guess themselves. You didn't fall for their scam, perhaps but they still managed to convince you something unusual was happening, and that was all suggestion. (That's not a criticism of you -- I'm sure plenty of skeptics have had the same experience -- it's just a testament to how suggestible we all can be in the hands of an experienced manipulator.)

While it appears to be true that the E Meter just measures skin resistance, like a standard ohmmeter, this video's claims that it is a scam are not backed up with actual facts, just generalizations and opinions. The video even admits that the E Meter is "more sensitive" than an ohmmeter (it clearly has more amplification to isolate or zoom in on a small range of resistance). There is little mention of the variability either of the E Meter itself or of the validity of skin resistance as a physiological marker of anything interesting. The crucial question remains: are tiny changes in skin resistance actually reflective of emotional or psychological states, or are they reflective mostly of artifact, that is, of other sources of variability?

I am not for or against scientology. But all you have shown in this video is that you do not think it works, and that you are comparing it to an Ohm meter.
If this war a real debunking video, you would have a staff member and a non staff member each doing a demonstration, so we could see what you mean with full instructions.
I was once by a member stopped on the street and took the test for 5 minutes on the meter. And to me it actually seems a bit smart. What I realized was that, it just measures consideration. Or in other words, stuff that is stuck on your mind. And they seem to be able to read it because of this Ohm resistance, to guide you through something doing some scientology thingy. So yes in a way it measures thoughts. And how I understood it from someone from that group on the street, is that you take courses, and when everything is solved, you do not have any considerations that is registers on the meter.
Whether it then is used for good or bad, is a completely different thing.
I am saying this, because I have tested several thousands of devices for companies in all kinds of industries and I am a private audiophile testing gear. And as an also ex 3. line supporter, I recognize that people in general do not test things properly. They most of the time have a preconceived idea of something, that slowly guides them to a desired/likely result with what knowledge is present.
So in order to test something, you have to perform a long list of stuff usually that you do not want to do or find necessary. Then you going through this, have to remove all ideas, for the data to present itself, doing 1000's of tests.
By the way I have also tested lie detectors. And they don't fully work, because it requires some kind of remorse/emotion to be present on the test subject to fully register. So people like Manson and a few others, would not seem like they were lying. So a lie detector can be beaten. How that is done, is also a completely different thing.

Scientology says that thoughts have some weight just because that is a simple way to explain the materiality of thoughts. Thoughts may indeed have or have not form and weight in an astral realm as many mystic and religious traditions claim, and as I firmly believe they do, but that's beside the point. The point is that you can indeed use this extremely sensitive and responsive device to have clues about what stresses you the most, what is traumatic for you. Some things are more on the surface, some other more deep buried in the subconscious but I disagree with you: this device works and can be used as a psychoanalytic tool. It is actually an extremely mighty tool if you know how to harness its power. Many people make fun of the mythology side of Scientology and of its connection with UFOs and extraterrestrial intelligence but that is clearly due to their extreme ignorance of Religion and of the Higher Intelligences at play in the Cosmos and of the myriad of timeless experiences of the immortal being we call Spirit and that makes us immortal beings with a great potential for progressing on the human levels of spirituality.

The only misguiding here is by the producer of this video. I've searched the internet for years for genuine criticism of scientology, but all I find is people who don't understand it, pretending they do, then criticising their understanding of it.
An e-meter is only similar to an ohm meter in that they both have a meter dial. An ammeter has different circuitry, as does a volt meter, yet all three look the same.
Secondly, an e-meter is not a lie detector as this article leads you to believe. It's a galvanic skin response meter, and as such it's designed to detect the smallest of changes in skin resistance. If you care to do a google search for gsr meter, you'll find that their are many commercially made units for use in the medical field. If you check any of the data on those sites, you'll find that it is accepted knowledge that a person has no conscious control over those small changes in skin resistance that occur when a subject is questioned. You'll also find that gsr meters prove to be invaluable in assessing a persons condition, basically because they DO help to find areas of a persons life that are troubling them.
The logic that's being missed is that if a person knew what was troubling them, they would be able to deal with it. Many people can show sgns of stress for example, without even realising they are stressed.
As for the comment about being asked a question over and over again, as if the auditor thought the client was being dishonest, have you even read DIanetics? How could the producer of this video claim to have been a scientologist for any length of time, without understanding the real reason a person is asked the same question again and again?
The whole point of auditing is NOT to detect lies, but to detect areas of stress, and the only time a session can be regarded as successful, is when that stress has been detected and flattened, so it no longer affects the subject. If you're being asked the same question again and again, it's to see if it still reads on the meter.
One day, I will find genuine criticism of scientology, but this is not it. All this is, is a demonstration of the producers own misunderstadings.
ps: That comment about the meter detecting thought is also nonsensical. You need firm contact with the probes in order to get a good reading, so laying them on the back of the hands simply would not work. What would happen if you measured the voltage or current of a circuit without assuring firm contact with that circuit? You'd get an inaccurate reading. This video is a criticism of scientology from a person with insufficient knowledge of what he is criticising.

Okay Cat Man. Since you are a defender of Scientology please tell us about your OT power, and who you were in a past reincarnation. Tell us about your exceptionally high IQ thanks to Scientology, Then perhaps you can do an actual demonstration of your OT power for the pubic.
My main motivation in making this video came from seeing the products of Scientology produced super humans up close when I worked on staff, and discovering how deluded many of them were.
I'm sure my video on the emeter could have been a bit more detailed, but I think the bottom line here is that Scientology claims that they can produce super humans with the emeter and an auditor is nonsense.
I think most of us can do far better my studying the wisdom of Jesus, and doing our best to live by those principles rather than wasting thousands of dollars in Scientology trying to become super humans.

Well, I never stayed in Scientology long enough for superhuman powers, so sorry to disappoint, but you really don' need to be in it long to know more than you've demonstrated in this video. To be honest, I do welcome intelligent, or at least knowledgeable criticism, but your video is simply an account of what you believe the e-meter is and what it does, rather than an honest explanation of it. It's rather like me saying that Catholics really believe the priest gives them Christs blood at communion.
Suppose I said that that scene in the exorcist where the girls head spins around is what catholics really believe, what would you think about my knowledge about what I'm saying? You'd laugh, wouldn't you? It's the same. You're portraying somethng in a different light and expectig to be believed, soaking up all the comments you got from those who also don't know anything about it, is this to make you feel good? One day I will see a genuine criticism that I can't argue with, but how can I agree with something that simply isn't true?

I don't think your analogy to what I said is a reasonable comparison to someone claiming to know what Catholics believe. Nor do I believe one needs an emeter to find the root of their problems, but here's another video you might find more to your liking. ua-cam.com/video/DqFRAy_pLIw/v-deo.html

I used the analogy to show how something can be misrepresented. It's kind of like saying that my friends daughter turned 18, joined a cult where she lives only with women, donned dark robes and now refuses to speak to anyone. She married a man who died more than 2000 years ago, and performs a daily ritual where she drinks his blood and eats his flesh. She is now known as sister Mary.
That other video is a little better, but again it's based on the interpretation of the interviewee. If you look at basic e-meter introductions, in the cos, they make it clear that it's based on a wheatstone bridge, a common circuit in electronics. The man being interviewed states what HE thought the meter did, but where is this mentioned in any scientology literature?
I've built a few similar meters myself, using different techniques and components, and as mentioned in the video and qualified by gsr meters, the e-meter does have some validity. The electronics engineer who took one apart also points out that there's not much more he can know about it without knowing how it's supposed to be used in scientology.
It's not a 'predicting' machine, nor is it a holy device that speaks to your spirit, it's simply a meter that measures changes in skin resistance when a subject is connected to it and questioned. What is important is how an auditor uses it. For example, a polygraph (lie detector) does nothing on it's own and the operator must be skilled in his approach to questioning a subject. If you have read 'book one' Dianetics, then you would fully understand the usefulness of such a meter assuming that 'book one' is valid. The meter serves it's purpose by saving many hours, or even years of wasted time.
The purpose of the operator is what should be called into question, not the device itself. If scientology is real, then it's a very useful device. If scientology is a con, then it needs to be exposed. But attempting to expose it with false information, does no one any favours.

I understand you don't think made a very accurate description of the emeter, but I didn't think it was all that bad.
Last year I purchased a Mark 5 emeter at a local sale, so I may do a follow up on my first video.
Some of m+y engrams from 6 trillion years ago were re stimulated by talking about Scientology, so I need to be careful. LOL

I will accept your debunk when you have a real emeter in your hands
