Scientology E-meter Debunked.
Переглядів 67 тис.10 років тому
As a teenager I became involved with Scientology thinking it was going to raise my IQ, help me overcome my problems, and eventually turn me into some kind of super human. The thing which use to impress me the most in Scientology was their E-meter, which I once believed had the ability to probe deeply into the human psyche, and help people discover their subconscious mental blocks. After working...

    I am skeptical of this device. BUT…. We don’t understand science enough to challenge this hypothesis…. Humans do emit electromagnetic waves which MAY be picked up by the meter. Science always changes. We don’t know what’s in the circuit…. So anything is possible. But so far I have not come across any research which studies the measurements of these mental thoughts. That’s why I remain skeptical…..

    You have debunked nothing. You only demonstrated that you don't really know what you are talking about. In fact the emeter is supposed to measure resistance, true. Some thoughts will generate energy changes in your electromagnetic field even to the point that your entire body language changes. Don't you think that some of the resistence generated thusly wouldn't pick up on a dial? LOL

      No. That's makes no sense. The e-meter is no more dangerous than the mobile phone you keep in your pocket all day long. I don't know how often they use an e-meter but it can't be more than a few times a month for a short period of time. Again, you're going to get more EM radiation from your computer monitor or TV screen than that.

    I dont know how schizo into metaphysics you are (schizo shit incoming) but Hubbard is right about there being a relation between the "spiritual" layer of reality and the world we perceive with our bodies, and it could possibly be measured in some way by tracking purposeful, concentrated disturbances like observing the wake of a ship at sea. That said using an ohm meter and also thinking you can reliably detect lies if you could even measure the displacement is absolutely fucking retarded. And yeah you grip tighter or persperate now your test is inaccurate even if it had any worth in perfect conditions.

  • @OrganicBass_
    @OrganicBass_ 2 роки тому

    Yeah but the thing is is I actually tried it and I had them turn the meter towards me and while holding the cans, based on how much processing I put into a thought, the meters arrow would move more slowly, and to the fullest extent of my capable ability to think, the meter even stops when I have reached such a thought threshold. I think auditing would work but for most people because it forces you to put yourself in meditation and have a trusted instructor to help you cycle through negative experiences. And they have a way at working underneath the surface of problems to get to the deepest parts. But it’s all based on meditation and how suggestible you are. I’m not very suggestible so I was very frustrating for them to deal with. I figured out how to manipulate the cans very fast. But it had nothing to do with how they were squeezed. It really did measure thought capacity or thought intensity of some kind.

    • @zaphenath6756
      @zaphenath6756 Рік тому

      no it didn't. no relation to mental activity whatsoever. it's measuring how conductive/non-conductive your hands are. period. focusing like you did may have caused your pores to sweat a little more or less, changing what you saw on the meter. nothing about thoughts at all

    • @EnglishMike
      @EnglishMike 11 місяців тому

      _"It really did measure thought capacity or thought intensity of some kind."_ It really didn't. There's nothing in those devices that can possibly do that. They have been examined part by part and they're just slightly more sophisticated ohmmeters as suggested in the video. Like it or not, everyone is open to suggestion at some level and an expert "auditor" is going to be able to fool you in the same way that an expert medium can make even skeptical people second-guess themselves. You didn't fall for their scam, perhaps but they still managed to convince you something unusual was happening, and that was all suggestion. (That's not a criticism of you -- I'm sure plenty of skeptics have had the same experience -- it's just a testament to how suggestible we all can be in the hands of an experienced manipulator.)

    Scientology is founded on the premise that for the price of fairly nice sized luxury yacht, you can achieve spiritual salvation. It begs the question that if nature offers spiritual salvation as our natural heritage, which is the most logical prospect, why must it cost money? How could be possible that out of millions of planets with life on them, the only one that has an opportunity for spiritual salvation is this planet, but only if you happen to be rich. I don't think nature planned for spiritual salvation of sentient beings, no matter which planet the reside on, in this fashion.

      On the surface you are 100% correct. But there are also hidden uses for the E meter only the top tier members know about. I liken Scientology to the Freemasons. There are the porch masons who are well meaning but clueless. The main body of masons who are mostly well meaning who know a bit more but are clueless about what the top tier is even all about and what they do. Maybe its for the best but I just think that any organization that tries to take over our government should be transparent and democratic.

    I was in Scientology as an Auditor years ago....for about a year also! And went to the "org" one day, and wasn't really interested in doing any study that day I guess.. A friend in there,Ray noticed, so suggested I be put on the e-meter.... It's all part of the policy,etc...If they see signs of an engram etc... So put on it, I went through the test and was amazed how they knew exactly what I failed to that particular morning! So this guy may have a wrong idea of how it ACTUALLY works! 2 people are trained as highly skilled operators,who know EXACTLY how to read the e-meter. Me,or any untrained person studying the policies has no idea,even if we read the manual! They as skilled operators know how to read the meter and what it's is saying! Is it pure luck or by chance that they guessed exactly as Ray suggested "the problem might be...?" what Ray assumed, because he suggested it as the possible cause of my lack of focus? Yes... maybe... maybe not... as they were operators relying on exactly what the e-meter was going to tell them to verify my failure , as evident! It was said to be like the standard e-meter. but better as you can fool the police version, but the e-meter it's impossible! As a staff member under a 5-year contract I got tested free, as got all courses free! I left when a Staff member told a student she smoked weed which is a no-no in Ron's books/policies...and the stupid student told on our staff officer,to , the course teacher,who asked her if she was high,and she told her the no-no policy as a member of 'Staff-in-training"! So the student said "nothing wrong with weed!" and at a meeting was told Staff leader was kicked out and would have to pay (15 years of free courses back, each ranging from $50-$100 to 3000 or more) - So I thought best to out before I get kicked out and landed a million dollar debt! I got hit with a $NZ1000$ or more bill but eventually paid some off and it was finally made null after 2 payments and I was reinstated as a "friend of Scientology" not a "recorded enemy" !

      They were reading you, not the device. This is nothing more than a mixture of cold and warm reading, how all "good" psychics and mediums do it. Ask the right questions, listen carefully to the answers (the "hits" and "misses") and watch the body language and it's amazing how much information someone can volunteer without realizing they're doing it. The e-meter is just a prob, a placebo, to make you think they have a real "scientific" method for doing this instead of an age old scam.

    While it appears to be true that the E Meter just measures skin resistance, like a standard ohmmeter, this video's claims that it is a scam are not backed up with actual facts, just generalizations and opinions. The video even admits that the E Meter is "more sensitive" than an ohmmeter (it clearly has more amplification to isolate or zoom in on a small range of resistance). There is little mention of the variability either of the E Meter itself or of the validity of skin resistance as a physiological marker of anything interesting. The crucial question remains: are tiny changes in skin resistance actually reflective of emotional or psychological states, or are they reflective mostly of artifact, that is, of other sources of variability?

    • @EnglishMike

      It's a scam because Scientology lies about how the e-meter works, and charges thousands of dollars for a device that costs, at most, a couple of hundred bucks to make, and probably far less if they didn't dress it up in expensive box with fancy knobs and dials. Scientology is the scam, the e-meter is just a tool to help part gullible people from their money.

But without doubt you can clearly see emotional response on an emeter. it is more sensitive than your multimeter.... but yes it is the same principal. it was known about in the 1930's. An Emeter is not only great fun but also very useful for counselling.... no kidding! you can see areas of upset and blocked emotion .... even though the person does not immediatly recognise them themselves... you can narrow down to particula incidents and go over them and the person does have relief. just is.... Ive built a couple of them a few years ago... and had orignal Emeters.... they are really great!

    I am not for or against scientology. But all you have shown in this video is that you do not think it works, and that you are comparing it to an Ohm meter. If this war a real debunking video, you would have a staff member and a non staff member each doing a demonstration, so we could see what you mean with full instructions. I was once by a member stopped on the street and took the test for 5 minutes on the meter. And to me it actually seems a bit smart. What I realized was that, it just measures consideration. Or in other words, stuff that is stuck on your mind. And they seem to be able to read it because of this Ohm resistance, to guide you through something doing some scientology thingy. So yes in a way it measures thoughts. And how I understood it from someone from that group on the street, is that you take courses, and when everything is solved, you do not have any considerations that is registers on the meter. Whether it then is used for good or bad, is a completely different thing. I am saying this, because I have tested several thousands of devices for companies in all kinds of industries and I am a private audiophile testing gear. And as an also ex 3. line supporter, I recognize that people in general do not test things properly. They most of the time have a preconceived idea of something, that slowly guides them to a desired/likely result with what knowledge is present. So in order to test something, you have to perform a long list of stuff usually that you do not want to do or find necessary. Then you going through this, have to remove all ideas, for the data to present itself, doing 1000's of tests. By the way I have also tested lie detectors. And they don't fully work, because it requires some kind of remorse/emotion to be present on the test subject to fully register. So people like Manson and a few others, would not seem like they were lying. So a lie detector can be beaten. How that is done, is also a completely different thing.
