The following video serves as an introduction to the central practice of Scientology -- auditing.
Discovered, developed and codified by L. Ron Hubbard, the procedures of auditing represent a vast body of technology.
In Scientology churches around the world, Scientologists learn the skills of auditing and use them to achieve spiritual enlightenment and freedom.
For anyone who would like to find out what Scientologists believe and practice, the best source of information are L. Ron Hubbard's books Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health and Scientology: A New Slant on Life.
A full description of the religion, its many Churches and related social betterment programs can be found in the encyclopedic reference book What Is Scientology?
However, for anyone who has simply wondered what the Scientology religion is about, the fundamentals of our beliefs are easily described. Hence, this series of videos are the basic Principles of Scientology, and thus the pillars upon which it rests.

So after reading The Fundamentals of Thought, it seems pretty clear that the Auditor role was developed by Hubbard as a sort of modern exorcist. The video here doesn't even really try to hide this: troubling thoughts, past experiences, spiritual blindness, etc. were all targeted by early religion.
The term "Valence" in Scientology basically aligns with the traditional idea of demon, spirit, etc., which has attached itself to the personality. (Using very simple logic, the "intents" of an external stimulus are loaded, usually subconsciously, into the subject's mind, and the ego inverts the time on it to claim precedence over the idea, whereby those intents become one's own, distorting their behavior, etc.) The traditional way to remove these demons/intents/Valences was to identify them so the ego can acknowledge they are foreign, and then work at them from within to pry them loose, which basically readjusts the entire stack. The more you readjust the stack, the more that memories are set in the right order (for example, traditional psychotherapy teaches the subject to mourn the abused child they once were and move on, which helps them remember correctly), the further back you can remember old memories, discuss them, categorize, etc. So there's definitely something to this.
However, you simply can't remember every event that screwed you up. At some point you're going to butt up against something that happened when you were 2, before you could even have real memory, but during a time when you were still being influenced by your parents, caretakers etc., and all this was still in the process of creating your personality. That's a pretty fuzzy time period. And yet Scientology seems to claim that this is where your "base" personality is, when really it's like you're rubbing off an old scab and exposing the raw flesh beneath which, unfortunately, is highly susceptible to new thoughts and ideas. This is where you're going to have the abuses come in.

Interesting, but since this is private third party, what qualifications and experience do these auditors undertake?
Are these counseling techniques recognised and approved by the British Department of Health? Or any other major widely recognised institutions?

can one use an e-meter to help clear out negative blocks on your own (without an auditor)? I have bought dianetics, handbook to preclears, and self analysis and am doing all the excercises in the 2 latter books. thought adding an e-meter to my therapy would expedite the healing process. but would still like to continue the healing process on my own.

@wasatchm, an E-Meter is used with an auditor who is trained in delivering exact counseling techniques. But the exercises you are doing in Self Analysis are a great way to begin on your own.

Like I said, I used to love receiving Scientology auditing. It gave me a sense of purpose and made me feel so driven and moral and capable. I’ve had a troubled past and I’m not too proud of it. To this day, I haven’t repaired all the damage and people get on my case about it. I guess they don’t think I’m aware of the problems and shortcomings. With Scientology auditing, I was able to take a hard look at my past and my current state and come to a lot of honest conclusions and make a lot of positive decisions. The processes really helped rehabilitate something in me. It really made me a different person. I don’t know how to describe it any better than that, but in so doing, I was taking the first steps to handle my difficulties. I have a long road ahead of me, but I don’t think my condition, ability, and motivation would be the same without auditing. I handled my troubled past in sessions at the Church of Scientology and rehabilitated a sense of responsibility about the whole situation. I’m not through, but that started the road out, and I’m grateful for that and I just want people to know and understand what was done to start pulling me out of the muck.

I’m not unaware of the problems, I’m hyper aware and I received Scientology auditing to help deal with those issues and my personal issues. I’m a better person for it

I used to love receiving auditing and I spent about two years learning the theory and practice of using the e meter to become a Scientology Instructor, it’s a shame I didn’t stick with the career after devoting so much time to it
