I have searched high and low on UA-cam for an A frame cabin build With good detail and one that I’m looking to build myself ! Well this is it for me ! Love the A frame you and your family have built . Thanks for sharing this on UA-cam .
I used 2x8's for the trusses and they sandwich between 2-2x6's that form the floor joists. If you don't have the Book listed in the description, get it. It will show you the basics. Well worth it for a build like this.
Hi Jim, greetings from Sydney, Australia! 🇦🇺 What a beautiful cabin you have built! By far the best A frame cabin I have ever seen. I love the glass front and the tiny combustion stove.
Man this is beautiful! You and your family did a great job. I dont know if someone already asked this in the comments, but; how did you go about digging the well? Once again, absolutley incredible job! I hope you all enjoy it for years to come. All the best!
Thank you! We Built the cabin ourselves and I actually tried to dig a well myself but ended up hiring a driller for the well. Check out that process here ua-cam.com/video/XqBr-hdRAnc/v-deo.htmlsi=LTJDyxy3aKVy6bm9
Scotland? That sounds amazing. I've always wanted to visit there. It is where my wife's ancestors are from. Best of luck to you. My build video is coming soon, and I hope it will be helpful to you. Thank you for watching.
Outdoor showers are the best. When I was looking for my land, I was living out of a friend's storage shed behind her house. I built an outdoor shower out of cedar and used a point-of-use 10 gallon water heater while I was there. The cool nights of northern Washington were clear and bright with stars. It got a little sketchy with the raccoons and the occasional bear, but I loved it. Nothing like watching shooting starts while you're rising off.
Beautiful ❤ great job! This would be so nice to have for anyone who loves cabin life! I especially like the wood beams. Happy memories to you and your family.
I like this build. Simple, sustainable, and low maintenance. I'm guessing the absent shower was a maintenance decision. Still, a great use of resources and interior space.
Probably the nicest A-frame I’ve seen so far. It’s way off the ground. ABSOLUTELY love the pillars. How’s the crawl space? The glass is GREAT. The deck is better than fine. Wonder, would you have liked more overhang on the front and back for weather protection? Thank you for sharing…from an old vet, retired in the foothills of east Tennessee Smokies.
Thank you for the kind compliments. The crawl space is open, but the floor is insulated. I plan on skirting it at some point when we live there full time. There are times that I wish I would have made the overhang deeper but mainly only heavy snow years. Thank you sir for your service to our country. God bless.
Friggin love it awesome job would like to do something like this on some property in New Hampshire. Really enjoyed the video have a good day and stay safe Jimmy from North Attleboro Mass.
Yep! I was raised with 7 and only one bathroom. We do have the outhouse still and me and my boys use it quite often. So I guess we technically have 2 bathrooms🙂. Great question. Thank you for watching.
A lovely build there. I'm interested in your pillar foundation system, which I'll copy to rebuild the bases of my sheet steel barn; some of the roundwood framing has rotted at ground level, so these are perfect supports for them. BTW, keep an eye on your Seaflow pump's pressure switch. I've had two of them and both switches burnt out within a year, as they're AC switches being used in a DC application. Seaflow seem to ignore pleas to put DC switching in. You can always use a manual switch when it fails, as the pump's still good enough.
Great advice. Thank you. The pillars were pretty straightforward. I used sonotubes from Home Depot, 4 pieces of rebar, and a bracket, also from Home Depot. Best of luck to you. Let me know if I can help. My email is in the video description.
I wish I had more info for you. I have a few pictures and that's about it. I was not even thinking about doing UA-cam at the time we built it. My email is in the description and if you email me, i can send you a few pictures if that would help. Thank you for watching.
Hey man it's a great build, I used to have that book, it was the time life educational book hardback cabins and cottages, I forgot who gave it to me maybe my father, and I think I lost it along with some other other items that I had in storage and couldn't pay the bill due to this awful economy and high cost of living in South Florida. But I love the build and the glass front is epic!!! I would live permanently in something this size even with a sweetheart, and probably have a functional pole barn of sorts on the property to put car in and a little agricultural type workshop... As I have a background in horticulture and success in growing delicious fresh food.... I would probably come up with a different location for power center / batteries something easier to access. I like drilling the well idea, pay the money and have a manual bison hand pump so it doesn't matter you always have water if you just pump it and the pressure normally is really good, plus a backup for the fire situation if it pops up. That deck is a superb idea, to bring the A-frame experience right out the door off the ground and not be in the dirt 👍
Sounds perfect. I wish I had your ability to grow food. It is something I am trying to learn. As for the barn, it's a great idea. Currently, I have a 20' shipping container that acts as my shop/additional storage area. It is fine for now, but when I retire and I am living there full time, a pole barn would be great to have and a fairly easy build. Thank you for your input. Best of luck to you!
@@solojimoutdoors that view of the Forrest is something, everyone is always talking about water views or Mountain View’s - views of trees are underrated 😂
I would like to know more about the pressure pump system? I am in the process of an off grid home myself. Two of my biggest hurdles trying to do this in house is the amount of solar array and system itself. Also having instant water from the well to run the shower, toilet, sink and exterior spigot.
I will be doing a video on this in the spring, but the basics are. Solar Well Pump pumps to a holding tank>water line runs to cabin> water line is connected to a pressure pump> pressure pump runs cabin. This is the pump i use. amzn.to/4fwEOM1 I hope this helps! Good luck.
Very nice cabin and it looks well built with lots of attention to detail. When you say "up here" how far north are you? I live in Minnesota and heating is an issue. Along those lines, how deep are your footings? Just wondering if frost is an issue for you as well. thanks.
My footings are 3-4 feet deep down to bed rock. Frost line is about 32". I get 4-6 feet of snow. In the few years since we built it, i have not had a problem with frost heaving or settling. Great question. Thank you for watching!
Thank you. I would guess around 10k if you could get them to come install it. My place is very remote. If you used wood framing instead of aluminum storefront, it would cost a lot less, and you could order glass to fit it.
Oldcastle🙂 Very similar to Kawneer. A glazier is a great thing to be. A building isn't a building till we are done. I built this from cutoffs and a pair of doors that were misordered.
Thank you for nice tour of your A-frame, I really enjoyed it, some nice solutions that remind me of my experience from spending a lot of time on the boat, bit different aesthetics but similar philosophy. Can you please tell me little bit of water system, capacity, way of collecting it, etc. Greetings from Croatia
I am glad you enjoyed it. I will be making a video about the water system, but the basics are that a solar pump fills a tank, the tank supplies the pressure pump, and the pressure pump supplies the cabin. Thank you for watching!

Sounds like a very fun experience for the whole family. You did a top notch job. A place to be proud of for sure, well done 👍

What size of lumber did you use for the 20x20x20 triangle?
Thank you. I am glad you like it! It's comments like this that make it worth the effort. Much appreciated.

That is a wonderful compliment. Thank you.
Some of my best memories are in a cottage with a metal roof in the rain!! Out house, hand pump and fish in the lake!! MAGICAL!
Sounds wonderful. Joy in simplicity!
I have always loved A-frames and yours is a beauty man. Nice job!
Very kind. Thank you.
Beautiful build. I really appreciate all of the storage you manage to incorporate into the structure
Thank you. We tried to make use of all available space.
First thing i saw was the window system. I did that for 40 years. Very nice work. Got a high school buddy did something similar. You love what you do.
Thank you. I have been in the business for 25 years. I do love what I do. Thank you for the compliment.
So nice! Amazing to be able to build this slice of heaven as a family.
Cool house
Nice well designed cabin. I am planning a geodesic one.
A geodesic cabin would be awesome. Best of luck to you!
Wow man this is nice. Perfect size. All it needs now is a little barrel sauna or wood fired hottub and you're mint.
Awe, yes, a sauna. That sounds pretty great right now. It is definitely on my build list!
Terrific Job! Gorgeous. Enjoy and thank you for sharing.
Thank you!
Great work man! Deceptively spacious and beautifully finished.
Thank you. For the size, it is as roomy as it can be.
Lovely home. Nice and bright and all mod cons.

Building a comfy cabin with the family. Great job that will be lifetime of memories .
Thank you! It has been a place of wonderful memories. It is my favorite place to be.
Awesome use of the commercial curtain wall, it made the project and will stand up to time and weather!
Thank you!
So cool! Thanks for sharing!
Well thought out.
I'm proud of you and your family, excellent concept and execution. It's just beautiful, reminds me of how sailboats are laid out.
Thank you so much.
Kool Kabin!
This is a perfect A-Frame! Congratulations!!
Thank you for the wonderful compliment. We think its perfect😀
Thank you. Nice work
What a beautiful little cabin, thanks for the tour!
Thank you so much!
Man that was truly amazing. Maybe one day I can have something like this.
That is very kind. It has been our dream for years and we made it happen. You can too.
What a lovely lovely A frame build. Thanks for sharing. Got lots of good ideas for storage etc for a future similar sized build in Scotland.

Thank you. I love how the beams turned out as well. My wife did an amazing job picking the colors. It is a beautiful place to be.
Very nice home, sir. Thanks for the video.
You're welcome! Thanks for watching.
Very cool build
Lovely!
Thank you
Cool you have a bidet attachment.
Life changer 🙂 not to mention less TP in the septic and fewer showers needed.
I thought he was gonna say the fireplace also pulls out into a bed😂. Very nice cabin id make it home .
I love it🙂 Thank you for watching.
nice place, man!
Thank you!
This video is inspiring me to learn more about building a frames. Great style and beautiful layout. Awesome job
Thank you. That is very kind. Comments like this make the effort worth it.
I like your idea in the comments about a shower house / spa. "I'm not going to take a shower I'm going to the spa".
Yes! That is my plan. A retreat at my retreat.
I like this build. Simple, sustainable, and low maintenance. I'm guessing the absent shower was a maintenance decision. Still, a great use of resources and interior space.
We have an outdoor shower for now with a shower house coming in 2025! Thank you for the wonderful compliments.
@solojimoutdoors might be best to keep it that way. In the event of a freeze.

Beautiful A-Frame! You beat its dark character with your fine glasswork!
Thank you! That is very kind. I am glad you like it.
Nice! I like the recessed storage thats a good way to save space, i have the cabins and cottages book too, i just need somewhere to build!
Thank you. Best of luck to you finding that special property.
This is beautiful!! Well done!
Thank you so much!
Man i appreciate this! God bless you and the family. Great work!

Very nice job. Congratulations to you and your family!

That's great 👍.. I've been planning to build a small A-frame back in the woods behind the new house i built by myself.
Do it. You will love it. It was pretty straightforward to build
I love the deck
Thank you. The deck extends the living space well. It was definitely worth doing.
Well done sir! Thanks for sharing
Great Job! That's a beautiful cabin.
Thank you!
That's a beauty. Good on you
Good job. Beautiful. Just one thing...5 people one bathroom?
Yep! I was raised with 7 and only one bathroom. We do have the outhouse still and me and my boys use it quite often. So I guess we technically have 2 bathrooms🙂. Great question. Thank you for watching.

@solojimoutdoors Thankyou. I live in the UK but the tubes are unavailable, I'll make moulds from poly drums or such.
@spindelnett6315 I love it. Make do with what you have. True off grid spirit.
Nice!! I'm building a couple aframes myself right now. I'd like to see how you installed your wood stove.
