We Built an A-frame Cabin! - FULL TOUR of Our Tiny Off Grid Cabin
Join me on a tour of our off-grid tiny A frame cabin. My family and I built this cabin ourselves from the ground up.

For this cabin build we didn't hire a single contractor or need a single piece of heavy equipment. The cabin is 20' x 28" and is constructed of 15 - 20'x20'x20' equal lateral triangles. It is entirely off grid. Solar supplies the power, a well supplies the water, wood provides the heat, and nature keeps it cool. We use minimal propane for a cook stove. Although we do not live here full time at this point, we enjoy spending as much time we can here and look forward to the day that we can live here full time.
The following book is a wealth of information for anyone starting out or thinking about going off grid. It gives you the basics of building this cabin as well as other important information to begin your off-grid journey.

1 Year with the Eco-Worthy Dual Axis Solar Tracking System

I have owned the Eco-Worthy Dual Axis Solar Tracking System for over a year now. It has been a great system and has performed well, especially for the price point. I have had only one issue in the year I have had it. The North/South actuator stopped working. Eco-Worthy promptly sent me a replacement. I re-installed the actuator with the motor up. Here is the link to the fix. ua-cam.com/video/Ta...

I have owned the The Eco-Worthy Dual Axis Solar Tracking post for almost a year now. It is a great product for the price and has worked great for me with one exception. Over the winter, the North/South actuator went bad. I contacted Eco-Worthy and they had a replacement on my porch in three days. This has brought my attention to a flaw in the instructions. Do yourself a favor and mount the Actu...

How are you powering the actuators? I see some people set up a separate battery and panel to power them - have you run cables from your battery pack?
최고속도가 궁금합니다
Is it possible to extend the rails to carry 4 large panels?
Thank you for nice tour of your A-frame, I really enjoyed it, some nice solutions that remind me of my experience from spending a lot of time on the boat, bit different aesthetics but similar philosophy. Can you please tell me little bit of water system, capacity, way of collecting it, etc. Greetings from Croatia
I am glad you enjoyed it. I will be making a video about the water system, but the basics are that a solar pump fills a tank, the tank supplies the pressure pump, and the pressure pump supplies the cabin. Thank you for watching!
Where is your shower or bathtub
Great question. We currently have an outdoor shower with a shower house planned for 2025. Thank you for watching!
Love the house. I have a small cabin of my own but we have super low water pressure (about 5 psi). Your pressure pump didn’t sound very loud like others I’ve heard in person. What brand and model did you go with and where/how is it installed?
Thank you! Here is a link to the pump I use - amzn.to/3BaEiox It is great and runs the toilet and sinks no problem. I installed it under the house. I plan to do a water system tour video and you will see the entire set up. Thank you for watching.
Thank you for the video. Very informative. How loud is the tracker? It seems like it’s kind of loud but the video could be magnifying the sound. What are your thoughts?
The video does amplify the sound. The sound is noticeable when it operates but it only makes small adjustments every now and then. It does not bother me.
Great videos and A Frame… no idea that an off grid place would have propane stove burners. Question: No Star-Link?
No Star-link yet. I have no phone or internet service at the cabin and I like it that way for now. It is nice to completely disconnect. My stove runs off 2 40lb rolling propane tanks. Thank you for watching!
This video is inspiring me to learn more about building a frames. Great style and beautiful layout. Awesome job
Thank you. That is very kind. Comments like this make the effort worth it.
What a beautiful little cabin, thanks for the tour!
Thank you so much!
this is my dream vacation cabin. wow.
Thank you. That is a wonderful compliment.
awesome work
Super cool. Great work!!
Thank you for watching!
It has worked great for my situation and I have been happy with it. I have had no rust issues at all. It may not be the best fit for everyone but I have not regretted buying it. I had a difficult time finding a good fixed mount option for less cost than the tracker. Thank you for your input.
My wife and boys and I are looking to do the same thing. Thank you for this informational and inspirational video. Getting back to God and land is a beautiful thing. I was wondering, what size/wattage are the solar panels and do you have a link to the batteries you chose? Thank you again 🙏
I have 2 - 410 watt solar panels and have 2 - 200ah AGM batteries (5+years old). I went with AGM because they do better in cold but heated lithium batteries are coming down in price. Here is the link to the ones I used- amzn.to/497oNu7 Thank you and good luck!
This is awesome
You did an awesome job!
hey Jim, great video and cabin! did you have to submit plans and get permits for this?
Thank you. I am glad you enjoyed the tour! It will most likely be different for you than it was for me to get aporovals. I am not qualified to give advice on permits or plans. I recommend that you consult with your local building departments before building or even purchasing land to see what will be required.
Too much white needs a splash of color
Very nice built. If you have the time, please add the videos with construction.
Thank you. I am working on the build video now. It should be up in a couple weeks.
Very nice cabin and it looks well built with lots of attention to detail. When you say "up here" how far north are you? I live in Minnesota and heating is an issue. Along those lines, how deep are your footings? Just wondering if frost is an issue for you as well. thanks.
My footings are 3-4 feet deep down to bed rock. Frost line is about 32". I get 4-6 feet of snow. In the few years since we built it, i have not had a problem with frost heaving or settling. Great question. Thank you for watching!
Did you start at 4 battery bars? If so,i thought that bike had 5 battery bars.. also were there alot of hills ?
Good catch. The bike was new to me and looking through the camera I thought 4 bars was full. You are right, it has 5 bars. So I was down a bar that point. Yes, there were several hills. Lots of up and down. Thank you for watching.
@solojimoutdoors I love your videos,I will subscribe and recommend to my friends.. thank you so much.🙂
Nice
How deep did you dig your foundation piers?
Down to the bed rock. 3-4 feet deep at my place.
that's cool. Very nice cabin
Loved the tour video you did. Thank you 🙏🏻
Thank you. I am glad you enjoyed it.
damn right! id stay there in a heartbeat
That's killer. Well done duder!!!
Thank you so much
Beautiful
Thank you!
I have searched high and low on UA-cam for an A frame cabin build With good detail and one that I’m looking to build myself ! Well this is it for me ! Love the A frame you and your family have built . Thanks for sharing this on UA-cam .
What size of lumber did you use for the 20x20x20 triangle?
Thank you. I am glad you like it! It's comments like this that make it worth the effort. Much appreciated.
I used 2x8's for the trusses and they sandwich between 2-2x6's that form the floor joists. If you don't have the Book listed in the description, get it. It will show you the basics. Well worth it for a build like this.
Well done. This is exactly what I'm thinking of putting together. It's the perfect size for the wife and me. What is the pitch of your roof? I'm guessing at 60 degrees?
Yes, I believe it is 60 degrees. 20x20x20 equilateral triangle. It is a perfect size for 2. My wife and I plan on retiring in this little cabin.

Cool cabin man. Looks great !
Thank you so much!
We looked at 22 acres in NE Washington a few months ago. Looked into the water situation with the neighbor, the only one within 5 miles with a well. His hole was 400 feet deep and only produced half a gallon per minute. Beautiful piece of land but we had to pass because of that. The quote we got for a hole that deep was $28k.
Thank you for sharing. I hope your journey to find the right land is blessed.
Outdoor showers are the best. When I was looking for my land, I was living out of a friend's storage shed behind her house. I built an outdoor shower out of cedar and used a point-of-use 10 gallon water heater while I was there. The cool nights of northern Washington were clear and bright with stars. It got a little sketchy with the raccoons and the occasional bear, but I loved it. Nothing like watching shooting starts while you're rising off.
I agree! Outdoor showers are the best. Thank you for sharing and watching. One of my next videos will show you my Outdoor Shower setup.
Would you sell the building plans ? Id love to build one also at this size.
We didn't really have plans. Check out the Book I listed in the video description. That is all we really needed. Thank you for watching.
Great job
Thanks!
Very nice. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you!
That's great 👍.. I've been planning to build a small A-frame back in the woods behind the new house i built by myself.
Do it. You will love it. It was pretty straightforward to build
Very nice
Thanks so much!
Beautiful A-Frame! You beat its dark character with your fine glasswork!
Thank you! That is very kind. I am glad you like it.
Will Starlink work for you out there?
Yes, Starlink will work, but for now, I choose not to have internet access. For me, it is part of what I love about the cabin. No distractions.
Some of my best memories are in a cottage with a metal roof in the rain!! Out house, hand pump and fish in the lake!! MAGICAL!
Sounds wonderful. Joy in simplicity!
This is a perfect A-Frame! Congratulations!!
Thank you for the wonderful compliment. We think its perfect😀
Man that was truly amazing. Maybe one day I can have something like this.
That is very kind. It has been our dream for years and we made it happen. You can too.
Is it legal to live in this year round? And I thought I heard you say that is the national forest so how is it legal to build here? Do they sell land to individuals?
Great question 🙂 My property borders National Forset. It's about 200' out my door.
I want one.😊
Thank you for the compliment.
Do you not want to wrap the bottom of home when cold weather comes in?
Most likely, we will later. We insulated the floor and sheathed the bottom. It does pretty well. Thank you for watching.
If you had bought the front glass, what would the ball park cost be? It really creates a beautiful space
Thank you. I would guess around 10k if you could get them to come install it. My place is very remote. If you used wood framing instead of aluminum storefront, it would cost a lot less, and you could order glass to fit it.
What PSI/Type of bagged concrete did you use? Any rebar?
High Strength Concrete and yes I used rebar.
We ended your video and looking forward to seeing the construction video… here is our shed conversation we did and I used my original music… Nice work! James m.ua-cam.com/video/cc_qu2DQHiA/v-deo.html&pp=ygUkYXJ0bGlmZWN5Y2xlIGNoYXBlbCBob3VzZSByZW5vdmF0aW9u
