I finally saw "The Substance" this afternoon in Holland, in a packed theater weeks after release -- a great sign in a non-English majority market.
Especially when The Substance cost around a tenth of what Joker 2 cost to make.
Went to go see Substance sat night,Sold Out,Plenty of freaking seats for Joker 2.Pass , I went home and watched Shogun.
That is odd as Joker earned $40 mil on the weekend and The Substance earned $1.3 mil after being taken out of 1100 theaters(down to 600 theaters) this week. All those people in those packed theaters for The Substance must have got in free.
Joker was a great solo movie, no need for a sequel.
"You mut let villains be villains." Yes, sir! Well said. Thank you, James for this box office breakdown.
This was a deliberate self sabotage lol
psychologist: what's the joke
joker: you wouldn't get it
Not sure what Todd Phillips was thinking but at least that thread of DC is over
All he needed was Joker taking over Arkham, watch him gain a gang and take on Croc, Riddler, Scarecrow as he proves he's the most feared villain.
Go against Harvey in court AND WIN, showcasing his control over the system
I dismiss this movie when I first heard it was gonna be a musical, and I was correct
The musical sequences weren't even the worst thing. They didn't really help though lol
We could have got Mad Love adaptation or a copycat Joker (which William DeFoe wanted) or seeing Joker become a criminal mastermind but no we got misery p0rn 2.0
Studios should require producers to have a 3 movie game plan before they make a movie. That way if the movie is a hit they know what direction they are going to go.
This film could easily have concluded with Joker becoming the prince of crime and meeting Batman. Really SO simple. It could show how Joker started resenting Batman/Bruce Wayne. Instead we got Todd Phillips showing off his skills.
Yeah, but Joker smokes a cigarette several times in the movie right. That ought to count for something.
The only parts I really liked lol
Sometimes it really does come down to quality. If the product has nothing, nobody will partake
Jason wasn't beaten to death with a crowbar.
Joker beat Jason, left the building, Jason untied his mom and was making his way out when the building exploded. The explosion killed Jason, not the crowbar.
I don't even mind the ultimate end being him giving up on the Joker persona, but he didn't even try to be him. It could have been great if he killed some guards, etc and at the end was overwhelmed and turned away from it all.
Your last point is so real , a lot of these creators don't seem to love or even like what they are making
This was part of the Real Joker's plan all along. Jokes on us...
Totally agree. Joker + Batman = success!
What destroys a comic book character is when they deleted from the comic book and they put their own interest in it forgetting about the fan base so when it becomes a flop they scratch their heads.
hmm just listening to you about Joker, I envisioned the movie only having musical numbers when Joker was being extremely violent. The cue of the music starting would create anticipation. Maybe a shadowy black figure taking Joker back into custody at end of the movie, not showing Batman, but giving the idea. Could have been really cool. but I think would need a Tarantino type director to pull that off. Todd Phillips was all about Arthur Fleck. Oh scrap the batman idea, Bruce was still too young.
Have you seen the trailer for "Companion "w/ Jack Quaid? That looks extremely interesting. I love a good toxic relationship movie 😂😂
I think this is an Arthur Fleck story. It’s more about a man who had a psychotic break with the politics about how politicians put the importance of mental health on the back burner with cutbacks on services. There’s no Batman. No Rogues gallery. No “connecting universe.” It’s just a character study. And I’m ok with that. I think most people who didn’t like it, thought it was a DC story.
It shouldn't have had the joker label, they just placed the joker person on. Joker as a DC character so we should be a DC movie. They should have just been Arthur 2
Looking forward to your Terrifier 3 review 🤘
Also be sure to check out Hundreds of Beavers if you haven’t.
On a more positive note. Did you watch the UFC card last nite?
I got just 5 words. "Joker and Musical Don't Mix" 😂 cant have a Joker Musical movie that shit wont work you wont get the comic book fans sold on that idea alone.
I enjoyed it. Appreciated it was simply Joker 1 on steroids. I understand it was affected by the writers strike, but as a counter to the first, I like it was at least attempting to change. Unlike Alien Romulus.
James Gunn's Superman movie is already DOA for me due to the cast, specifically Superman and Lois Lane.
Is this some type of 4th wall art piece where Todd is saying that he is the true Joker by letting it burn?
My hall had 3 people
A couple making out and me alone😢
Folie á trois.
WB did this to themselves being greedy. Todd Philips gassed out when writing this sequel when he said before that he only intended to make only one Joker movie shared by Joaquin Phoenix
I saw joker 2 on Saturday. There were less than 10 people in the theatre.
Nice, I am going for a 2nd time this weekend
Great work as always James💚🇬🇧🌱
No one wanted to see a movie where the criminal joker sings about being in love and is whipped and used by a girl
2019 had 9 billion dollar films. Disney alone had 7. The 2 non-Disney billion dollar films were Joker and Spiderman No Way Home (half-Disney).
This movie didn't need a sequel BUT it still could have been a really good profitable film. I feel Todd Phillips sabotaged his own film to piss of fans and/or the studio. If you despise the joker or the fans that much he could have just turned it down. He's too righteous to make another proper Joker movie but not righteous enough to turn down the money.
Love your reviews been a while thank you for the feedback ❤
Everything you said was spot on.
Audience: "What was the point of this movie?"
Todd Phillips: "You wouldn't get it." 🚬
Only hope is the international box office because it opens to 81 million. So 121 million worldwide
I’m shocked that Joker got a D on CinemaScore while Megaflopolis got a D+.
Too many music numbers and like you said not a real villian. Sad. I am going to miss this joker.
Batman coming in for the last ten minutes thru the perspective of some kind of Arthur fever dream sounds so cool to me. In an altogether different sequel of course.
Little kid Batman? That had to be who it was... Unless it's Batman fighting a old man. Joker that wasn't even him. Old man Arthur
Great show,I love David cronenberg
100% agree. I liked Joker 1 enough but when it ended I was more interested in what happens next with him as an underworld shotcaller, not a rehash of the first film.
I have a question. Is any film made after the year 2000 worth watching? If so, why?
Almost look at it as an attempted retcon of Arthur Flek from Arthur to Joker and then somehow back into Arthur again. What the hell are they doing? Arthur is already GONE or only a slither remains under the makeup. It's this pernicious infantile mentality that anything outside the box must be classified somehow and repackaged into a comfort zone that can be explained away. Exactly the same thing is happening in ROP with Sauron. It's a very immature world view.
The movie will break even.
Gaga has her fans. They will show up for her
I would have loved to see the look on Zaslav's face when he watched this.
I am glad that “Joker 2” is a catastrophe. Hell yes.
Hollywood doesn't know what people want?. How after so many years of total fucking garbage?. I'd love to see some serious sci-fi.
You are garbage
I am going to see it again this weekend
Here’s hoping that Joaquin don’t have any “great” ideas for Eddington that he manages to sell to Ari Aster
They literally had him singing more than her! Just that is a fail.
Why does he keep saying its unusual to see critics and audience in lock-step. Its more normal than abnormal. The Joker has a 68% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes which is not exactly resoundingly negative. It's not even as negative as The Lion King (2019) which has a 52% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. These are rare occurrences but make sense because these are popular IPs.
That’s a shame because I thought this would finally be a role that gaga could shine given that Harley Quinn is a little bit kooky and gaga herself is a little bit kooky however, it sounds like they just dropped the ball tremendously.
At least we got a great album called Harlequin!!!🎉❤
Terrifier 3 next week baby! Something tells me it'll be the better clown movie.
I’m interested to see how I feel about Joker 2 . I thought the first Joker was OK . I didn’t like it as much as everybody else. I still haven’t seen any of the Terrifier movies . I have to check it out.
You can’t turn the Joker into simple Jack and expect the audience to like it.
You have to let the Joker do Joker things.
You mean simple Arthur, don't ruin joker's real name like that(jack btw)
Yeh I disagree about doing a solo villain. I think Joker was the perfect way to do it. I also think there is nothing wrong with the fans wanting a power fantasy... if you slap the name of Joker on something it is not insane for the audience to think that is what they are going to get. IMHO this whole thing is classic false advertising and I think we are going to start having to demand money back and or file lawsuits.
i wonder if there will be repercussions for the wb people in charge who pushed for this release someone will probably get fired didn't this happen with the justice league snyder cut someone gave him 70 million to finish his cut because of a loud but ultimately small group thinking it would drive subcriptions to max and it didn't happen and he got fired. they just made james gunn's job harder forget climbing the mountain that is DC's reputation after years of failure he's going to have to try to pick it up and move it. Hbo's the penguin is doing a good job of giving us villains you can sympathize with without losing the villainous stuff he's not a good person and the show is successful becuase of it
This is James Gunn’s fault. He’s the big bad boss now. He has the final say to everything. He didn’t read the script and say wait, this is bad?
You made that up regarding the snyder cut.
Stop hating
11:49 yea in all my years of going to movie theaters, I’ve never seen an audience so disappointed and defeated in spirit, it’s almost evil what this movie did to people lol, people were not in a good mood , it was kind of unsettling
Strange days.
I’ve never been into musicals and I definitely wouldn’t see a comic villain musical. Could you imagine dark Knight two musical?
😂😂😂
The final blow of the old Warner Bros regime before DC Studio kicks the comic book gence needs
Filmmakers are being too self-indulgent. They’re forgetting that their primary job is to entertain.
Choke on my nuts wideo gamer
Execs: if we can make $1B with $50M, then we can also make $1B with $200M
I don't agree that he needs Batman per se for this movie (the first movie proved that) but I do admit that they shouldn't have him regressing him back to being more sad "Arthur fleck" and not embracing his Joker persona more so for the movie. By the way you forgot to mention the comic Batman # 251 by Denny O Neil and Neal Adams, the actual comic that brought Joker back to being a homicidal maniac!
I don't think it's deserved. Joker 2 wasn't that bad and had a smart twist at the end. Spoiler Alert; he's not our Joker.
Twist, he's never been our joker... He's always been Arthur but the ending implies that he is an original character that the real joker steals the idea from and imitates... Kind of arrogant if you ask me. Which came first comic book joker or Arthur, apparently Arthur.(Edited due to Google speak not liking my voice)
It isnt really rare that critics and audiences agree, youtubers just dont care when critics agree with audiences. Agreement is the most common outcome.
Last thing I wanted to see was another Joker movie. The first one was fine, hugely derivative. Need new stories and less comic stuff.
From what I’m hearing, it wasn’t the title that sunk this movie. Ooof.
If they introduced batman in this joker it'd had to be in the future and jokster would have been in the old folks home. Jokster vrs bat person (it wasn't the real joker he never was so it couldn't be the real Batman anyway) : Arkham retirement shenanigans
Joker is a MKULTRA project. Arthur wasn't up for the task so they k11ed him off. (Clean up) Lee was assigned to bring out the joker... Musical cues are triggers... Lee as handler. The b0mbing of the court was the last attempt to bring out "the joker"... Arthur rejects that role. Arthur was a candidate to become "the joker" from birth (via mother) he was groomed to become the agent of chaos... Wayne enterprise joker project. (Order out of chaos)
The irony in your take is that the Joker 2019 teen proved that you can do a solo villain movie without the hero
Yeah. His logic is extremely flawed
Yeah but there were so many Bruce Wayne references and we saw Bruce as a kid and Alfred and that whole buildup with Bruce's Father with the joker thinking hes Bruce's brother that's massive.
It was a one off, people still think it's a joker movie but i don't remember Arthur in the comics. It was an Arthur movie with joker slapped on it. He never was joker but it was different and people were desperate for a good comic dc movie after the last joker flop.
I wish you wrote the screenplay
I feel like the lack of Batman is the least of this film’s problems.
why would you tell a pivotal detail about the movie and then afterward say "Spoiler alert"?
You must have missed the massive spoiler warnings beforehand
They screwed this up INTENTIONALLY. By choice. This movie was an easy lay up $500 million. Just do the thing AGAIN.
Avengers Endgame was more profitable than Joker! perhaps you meant in terms of profit-to-budget ratio?
should've been a standalone film if they had any respect for art
Wish Phillips would have done something else instead, maybe a f'ed up GG Allin biopic, going full circle to the beginning of his career.
Joker 2 is far better than most comic book movies. People say they want something different but many of these same people love low hanging fruit like Deadpool and Wolverine. They just want CGI, big booms and childish humor.
Joke is on them, clowns. This movie will become a classic masterpiece
I just want the real characters, Arthur was never the real joker anyway, he was always in an imposter and an implies that he's the original character, but he is AN original character. He was joker. That's all anybody wants is the real deal
I didn’t care for the first movie to be honest . But the movie was was beloved mainly by the audience made a lot of money a sequel which I didn’t think was necessary it was inevitable , why they felt the need to triple the budget I will never know , i thought it would do well based on the strength on the original but I never thought it would get any where near the 1 billion original I figured anywhere between 500-600m ww then I heard rumors about the budget .
Not gonna lie watched this online , that first act I thought was good I was like what is everyone hand rigging about then the rest of the film just kind of collapses on itself it’s not the worst movie I’ve ever seen and I think the critical reception has been overly harsh but I can completely understand why especially if you loved the first movie .
The budget killed this movie if if they brought it in at a 100m that would have been reasonable , there is no excuse for what is essentially a character driven courtroom drama to be that expensive .
@@haydengarinduchesne9269 I will agree with you on the budget. No movie really needs a budget this big especially an R rated movie.
@@MasonGrant0704 insane the budget on this one . Look I didn’t love the original but I didn’t hate it surely the way forward was to have him fully embrace his joker persona ? That would have kept audiences on board at the very least , this new one again it’s kind of a train wreck after that first act but in a strange way I kind of admire it .
I think in order to get the sequel off the ground a lot of concessions were made by the studio , creative freedom bumper paychecks , larger budget that seems to have backfired 200m ish budget , let’s say another 100m for advertising looks like they are going to need around 600m just to break even at least in theatrical revenue.
I
Hi James! Scoring lower than Madame web and Morbius?? Yikes!😱
Folie 'a DUHHH 😂😂
***poltergeist sequel???? Where'd that come from?
Wait you admitted that you went on feeding frenzy with others to try, and destroy “Prime-Lord of the rigs”,, you shouldn’t be a critic at all. Admitting it became somewhat of game to destroy, because you personally disliked it “sound’s like biases”… Shytty critic, and that’s part of the problem dealing with the public, folks trying to tank because they feel like it.
Orcs : we need to stop sauron
Elfs : no, we need to stop sauron
Orcs : this is an impasse
Elf : then we shall fight for it
Epic writing, a masterpiece
Having seen this on Friday with a pretty packed audience, I'm not sure what film the majority of critics saw that garnered this film such a thrashing. I sat there in the theater thinking 'Okay, where is the movie I'm supposed to dislike?' Of course everyone's entitled to their own opinion- I don't think Eternals is as bad as some make it out to be (certainly better than Thor: Love and Thunder), and my favorite DCEU film is Man of Steel. Both have rotten scores. Everything that worked in that first film, whether it's the acting, directing, and score, all resonate here, and I appreciate that Phillips again took some risks, even though, apparently, those decisions didn't land with everyone. I hope the film at least proves profitable. Could be a struggle to get there, but for now, I enjoyed this. To the extent of the first film? No. But I'd give it maybe an 8 out of 10.
You saying that Man of Steel is the best DCEU film and that The Eternals is a decent film tells us everything we need to know about your taste in film. Nothing wrong with liking what you like but don't expect the majority of film goers to agree.
@@craxyman9025 Good thing I didn't ask the majority of moviegoers, yourself included, to agree with my taste in film.
@@omaridaniels8427 Ok...but you said that you don't understand why we feel like we do and that you say in the theater thinking why people disliked it 🤔. It's because we enjoy quality films.
@@craxyman9025 Ok...but me saying I don't understand doesn't mean I'm expecting them to agree, as I said earlier. Obviously me thinking Joker 2 is quality doesn't mean I expect others to feel the same. Not sure what kind of conclusion you were expecting when you throw out something like 'tells us everything we need to know about your taste in film.' As if you're the arbiter on good or bad taste in movies.
Check your facts. The profits for the joker was split and did not go entirely to Warner brothers. They made a mistake with this one by increasing the budget so there really isn’t any profit for either of these movies for warners. They are idiots.
I think you’re forgetting that this got nothing to do with Batman……. I genuinely feel that this is why you guys end up disappointed. Yall expected too much!
Now I do believe that the original plan was to have like a study about the character…. I don’t think they care to play into the superhero movie field…. Joker shouldn’t had a sequel.
Shouldn't have talking on the joke of me if they didn't want it to be a comic book film.(They pasted his character onto an o.c )
This movie deserves every ounce of hate that it’s getting
Everything burns!
Come on man. That Terrifier trash is just as manipulative and devoid of anything substantive as the corporate crap you’re complaining about 😂
Bruce was 12 in joker. Pretty sure fleck can kick his ass
that 12 year old might have been able to beat up Arthur....now joker maybe not,but Arthur sure. Heck give it a few years and he'd break a hip trying to fight batman.
The musical aspect isn't what i have a problem with. The story they tried to tell is the disappointment to me
Musical+ Superhero= Failure.
I liked Joker 2. Need to see it again. The shattering of a broken man is very difficult to watch. In the days since I’ve seen it I’ve processed enough to see the bigger picture, and how haunting our society truly can be.
I just watched it and it was awesome
A comment that takes the film at face value, thank you! And now I shall check out your channel.
Just saw it again. Truly blown away how it all connects. So sad, bold, and thought provoking. I think people’s opinions may change after some time has passed.
Lol. Bruce Wayne was a child in the last movie. Lol. He couldn’t have done anything.
As a fan of the first one I will never watch another Todd Philips film smh so disappointed.
Couldn’t have happened to a crappier movie; Hollywood continues to bore the hell out of me.
A crappier movie bombed much harder very recently, but can’t blame anyone for forgetting Borderlands
NOBODY ASK FOR OR WANTED A JOKER (2019) SEQUEL. TODD PHILLIPS EVEN SAID BACK IN 2019 THIS IS A STAND ALONE MOVIE NOT PART OF A TRILOGY. I'M GLAD IT TANKED I TOLD MY COUSIN AND COWORKERS A SEQUEL TO JOKER IS A HUGH MISTAKE. TODD PHILLIPS EVEN SAID JOKER WAS A ONE OFF MOVIE.
You just had to type that in all caps?
Most people with no mental illness won't understand the movie...so not suprised by the results.
People want Wolverine/Superman part 26. Show them art and they have diarrhea
I think it might be received better if it was a real joker movie even if it was artsy. The first one was an imposter joker to begin with but it was artsy and received well so your point is invalid. If it's artsy trash it's still trash, doesn't matter how well the cinematography is. It's like a toilet seat plastered on a wall. That can be seen as art too, doesn't make it good.@@maxmaxed2887
